HEADTEACHER’S NEWS
Sadly we say farewell to Mrs Kerr at Christmas as she
relocates to Suffolk with her husband. She has provid-
ed loyal and unstinting service to the school and her
commitment to our pupils is relentless. I have been
fortunate indeed to have been able to count on the
support of such a professional and capable deputy. Mrs
Kerr joined the school in January 2006 and was initially
in charge of mathematics at the time when our applica-
tion for designation as a specialist Maths and Compu-
ting school was successful. Maths and ICT have been two of our most successful
departments over the last decade and Mrs Kerr deserves much of the credit for
this.
Mrs Cousens retires at Christmas after well over
a decade of loyal service; she joined the English
department in September 1999. She remains a
very dedicated and passionate advocate for Eng-
lish, both language and literature. Over the years
the English department has produced some fine
results and many students have progressed to A-
level English courses at College and in sixth
forms. Mrs Carole Dean has already taken up her
post as the incoming Head of English.
Mrs Daulby is particularly well known to our Year 10 and
Year 11 students, as the school‟s examinations of-
ficer. With modular examinations in the ascendancy this
has become a very busy job indeed. She is also relocat-
ing to the east, in her case to Norfolk as a result of a
family move.
Mrs Dormer has a new post and leaves at Christmas. I
should like to thank her for all her hard work and commit-
ment as attendance officer since January 2010, although
her service to the school actually extends all the way back
to 2004 when she joined initially as a classroom assistant.
I extend my warmest wishes to the four colleagues who are departing and wish
them every success in the future.

Ski special Bring on the Cold!
Whilst we all shiver from the cold or shelter from the rain, members of the Stonehenge Ski
Club have a warm glow of anticipation inside. All this nasty weather blows over to Europe and
rises up the Alps to fall as snow—just where we need it!
Conditions in our new resort for 2013, Axamer Lizum, are already good enough and there are
still around “50 sleeps” to go before the we hit the slopes. With continued chilly weather in
Austria we are promised perfect conditions for another exciting excursion, bring it on!
Congratulations! We are very fortunate that there is a huge amount of enthusiasm amongst staff for our ski
trips and hence the trips are always well supported. This enables the ski team to support the
students with a wealth of experience both on and off the slopes. However it is not only expe-
rience that counts; all the staff who go attend specific practical training on the „Dry Slopes‟, training with child protection issues and also complete a one day course organised by the na-
tional governing body for skiing, „Snow Sport England‟, covering all the essentials for schools
skiing abroad.
This year the ranks are joined by Miss E. Lawler and Mrs R. Blyth who have successfully gained
their SCO certificate; congratulations!

All skiers … … should be busy throughout the Christmas holiday getting themselves strong and fit. Only about 50
days until we go! Run … cycle … swim … „wall sit‟ … aerobics … exercise … run … cycle
… swim … „wall sit‟ … go to the gym … run … play sport … … … do something most days …
stretching is just as important … do something most days! Practice getting up! S t r e t c h …
get yourselves ready skiers.
Ski TV Ski Sunday” is starting again on BBC soon, and these days there are other stations such as Eurosport 2
that show lots of winter sports; mostly at the weekend but some weekdays too. These programs are
designed for ski enthusiasts and although they often feature slalom and downhill racing, there are usu-
ally interesting „slots‟ about the resorts, new technology, up to date news and weather etc. Not only is
it informative, but it is a chance to sample the atmosphere and the wonderful scenery of the moun-
tains.
Dry Slope Report
The skiing season has already
got off to a great start with
two Dry Slope skiing sessions in
November and December. The
ski centre in Christchurch has
really developed over the last
few years and at last skiers
were able to enjoy the new sur-
face. More of a „bristle mat‟
than the old „dendrex netting‟, resulting in a more snow like surface, more responsive and better for
learning. Despite below freezing temperatures, the skiers took to it like ducks to water. Skiers had a
chance to re-find their „ski legs‟ and make progress whilst the beginners learned very quickly and will
have no problems on the „real stuff‟!
**Calling all Y9s and Y10s** Initial plans have just been made for a ski trip in Spring 2014!
A provisional booking has been made to ski in Schladming, Austria during the February half term hols
in 2014. The trip will be launched during February 2013, costing around £900. So, Y9 and Y10 keep
your fingers crossed; if you want to work towards going next year, there is only about three months to
do lots of jobs around the house and to impress your teachers with your „maturity‟! Letters will be given
out on request to those students with a good behaviour record.

YEAR 9 SUMMARY
Rewards Assembly
The Christmas Rewards Assembly will be on 19th December, only 5 days from Christmas. I am really
looking forward to presenting prizes and certificates to the top achievers in Year 9.
Year 9 PSHE
Mr Monk, the School‟s PSHE expert and Anna Tattersall, the School Nurse, organised a special day of Year 9
PSHE on 14th December. Boys and girls will be split into separate groups. This is an opportunity for some in-depth
and specialised discussion around the subjects of contraception, feelings for people you are attracted to, and
other sensitive issues affecting Year 9 students in today‟s world.
Collapsed Timetable Day
Year 9 will be going into Salisbury City on Monday 17th December to take part in an interactive quiz. They will fol-
low clues and learn more about the City‟s famous buildings and history. I am certain this will be a fun and enlight-
ening day for staff and students, and just hope the weather stays dry!
Set Moves
There will be some set moves after Christmas to reflect the perseverance of those students who have produced
maximum effort. Unfortunately other students have not performed so well in their assessment and have been
moved into a less challenging class.
However, set moves occur three times a year, so for those students who have been moved down, this should be
seen as an opportunity to work harder, impress staff, and possibly get moved back up.
Students who have received the most points in December so far are:

Year 8 spent the day rotating round different festive activities. They created „Snowy scene‟ Christmas cards,
textile baubles, reindeer and animal stand-ups in resistant material. They sang Christmas carols in German and
took part in a German quiz. They even had time for some festive drama!
A great day was had by all!

Health and Social Care – Virtual Babies Project
In 2012 Year 10 and 11 girls studying Health and Social Care were given the fabulous opportunity to take home
very valuable and lifelike “virtual” babies for the weekend.
The babies could be programmed in 15 different ways, so the
girls had different programmes
The students had to feed the babies, change their nappies,
soothe them, rock them and generally look after them through-
out the weekend.
There was at least one incident of a baby being dropped, and
several girls did not support the head sufficiently, but to my
knowledge none of the babies were thrown, and they were all
returned to school in excellent condition!
Many of the girls came back with their babies on Monday morning saying variations of “I haven‟t slept all weekend.
I‟m never going to have children…!”
Many of them got extremely attached to their babies and missed them afterwards.
We all learnt something from the project and are very grateful to Joanne Triffit of the Mother‟s Union and So-
phia Moody of Salisbury Diocesan Church for helping support the project.
To all the members of staff in mothers union
Thank you ever so much for letting me try out the virtual baby
project, it was very educating and exiting to know that for a
weekend I was going to be a mother. I was having to stand up
and take control of this virtual baby and it made realise that
I‟m too young to have a baby, a real baby would take up your
childhood if you choose to have one at my age. I really enjoyed
this experience and I would happily do it again, the only thing I
did struggle on is the head support because you need to keep
it up right.
This experience has led me to get a job in babysitting because
I know how to support and look after a baby, I am very great
full for this task.

COLLAPSED TIMETABLE DAY
Year 9 students were in Salisbury on Monday 17th December
searching out the answers to the quiz organised by Mrs
Eveling.
There were lots of positive comments about how well stu-
dents behaved and in particular from people in the Cathedral
and the Tourist Information Centre.
Students arriving or leaving school by car ….
Parents, please do not drive onto the school grounds to bring or pick
up your child from school. The school grounds are extremely busy
with over 700 people arriving or leaving at the beginning and end of
each school day. It is a health and safety risk for your children if we
have additional vehicles driving onto the site.

Year 8 have played their matches and
are currently in 4th position. Jess Hall
has shown particular dedication.

appreciated.
