 Palm Sunday- April 5- 2020

It marks the beginning of Holy Week and always falls on the Sunday before Easter Sunday. Other names for this day include Passion Sunday, Fig Sunday, Willow Sunday, branch Sunday, or Blossom Sunday. Many churches hold special Palm Sunday services that involve distributing palms to the congregation, Branches of olive, box elder, spruce or other trees are used in places where palms are not available. They are later hung up in houses for good luck, buried to preserve crops, or used to decorate graves. The custom of decorating graves with blessed palms still exists in some parts of Germany. Ashes from these palms are used for Ash Wednesday. Many churches in Greece celebrate Palm Sunday in a solemn manner. they call it kyriake, heorte ton baion, heorte baiorte baiophoros, or Lazarus Sunday, because they have the feast of Lazarus' resurrection prior to Palm Sunday. Many Greek Orthodox churches celebrate Pam Sunday at a later date than the date that many western churches have for the day. This is because many Greek Orthodox churches still use the Julian calendar, which predates the Gregorian calendar used in many countries. BACKGROUND----- Palm Sunday is the start of Holy Week, which is the week

before Easter, commemorating events in the last days of Jesus Christ's life. According to Christian belief, Jesus rode into Jerusalem where people gave him a hero's welcome during the Jewish Passover celebration. They heard about his miracles and regarded him as the leader who would deliver them from the Roman Empire's domination. They carried palms branches, which is a traditional symbol of victory and spread them throughout the street before him. Many western churches have observed palm blessings and distributions to the congregation on Palm Sunday since the middle ages. Early references to Pam Sunday observations including a procession and blessing of the palms go as far back as the fourth and eighth centuries. Many modern Christian churches including the Catholic and eastern churches as well as the Lutheran, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches celebrate Palm Sunday as part of Holy Week. SYMBOLS--- The palm branch is traditionally a symbol of joy and victory over the flesh and the word in Christianity. It is also associated in memory of Christian martyrs. Willow is commonly used instead of palm branches in some European countries. They are sometime placed in the fields to ensure that there will be good crops.   Pauline and I wish all our brothers and their family HAPPY EASTER---

Chaplain’s Message

Dear Knight Brothers

On March 25, the Church celebrated the feast of The Annunciation of the Lord. As I reflected on the Gospel story, I was struck by the encouraging words of the angel to Mary : “Do Not Be Afraid.” Yes, Mary was afraid when the angel told her that she would bear a Son, that she would be the mother Of God.

During these days, fear and anxiety is gripping the whole world.  When we face any danger, our natural tendency is to be afraid. We can be afraid of being affected by the Coronavirus. We can be afraid of our loved ones being in quarantine. We can be afraid of our own limitations, our powerlessness in the face of the pandemic. Like Mary, we need to overcome our fear by embracing God’s will with faith and love. As our confidence in God increases, our fear decreases. As our love increases, our fear disappears. Am I surrendering my fear by giving myself in faith?

Keep safe.

In Christ,

Fr. Paul

Brothers All;

I Pray that all are well. We all know how serious this COVID Pandemic has become. For an update both the 4th degree convention and the 3rd degree convention have both been cancelled. All meetings of any kind have been cancelled. State is looking into setting up an online webinar conference for the end of April. Please remember to limit your outings and keep your 6 foot distance.

Please see the 2 prayers below:

Here is a Suggestion from Supreme Knight Brother Carl Anderson

Leave no Knight – or neighbor – behind. If members of your council – or community – are elderly or have underlying medical conditions, please ensure that they have enough food. If you or others in your council have food to spare, offer to drop something

off on their doorstep or to shop online for them.

Pray. During this period

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe,Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son,as you did at the wedding in Cana.Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted,we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to bepatient and kind.Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and toour hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

Mary to aid the sick and all who are suffering due to the coronavirus pandemic. In making his appeal, Archbishop Lori cited the prayer

and the leadership of Pope Francis, who recently

invoked Mary’s help under the special title of “Health

of the Sick.” The Knights of Columbus has published

the prayer said by Pope Francis and Archbishop Lori

online, calling on members and Catholics to say the

prayer over nine days as a novena beginning

Sunday.

It especially prays “for those who have fallen ill, for

those who are vulnerable and for those who have

died.”

It adds: “Intercede also for those charged with

protecting the health and safety of others and for

those who are tending to the sick and seeking a

cure.”

A PRAYER FOR PROTECTION IN TIME OF PANDEMIC

O Mary, you always brighten our pathas a sign of salvation and of hope.We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while remaining steadfast in faith.O loving Mother, you know what we need, and we are confident you will provide for us as at Cana in Galilee.Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine Physician, for those who have fallen ill,for those who are vulnerable, and for those who have died. Intercede also for those charged with protecting the health and safety of others and for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure.Help us, O Mother of Divine Love,to conform to the will of the Fatherand to do as we are told by Jesus,

who took upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows,so as to lead us, through the Cross,to the glory of the Resurrection. Amen.

Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God.In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Did you know?

The following information was taken from the Government of Canada web site

Preventing coronavirus

Canadians should continue to think ahead about the actions that they can take to stay healthy and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Canada, including:

being prepared  in case you or a family member become ill

following the latest travel advice from federal and provincial public health leaders:

o avoiding all non-essential travel , including cruise ships

o quarantine (self-isolating) and monitoring for symptoms (cough, fever or difficulty breathing) for 14 days if you have travelled outside of Canada

reducing contact with others by following the guidance for quarantine (self-isolating) or isolating

practising physical (social) distancing and proper hygiene

wearing masks , if necessary

 Physical (social) distancing

Together, we can slow the spread of COVID-19 by making a conscious effort to keep a physical distance between each other. Physical (social) distancing is proven to be one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of illness during an outbreak.

This means making changes in your everyday routines to minimize close contact with others, including:

avoiding crowded places and non-essential gatherings

avoiding common greetings, such as handshakes

limiting contact with people at higher risk like older adults and those in poor health

keeping a distance of at least 2 arms-length (approximately 2 metres) from others

Hygiene

Proper hygiene can help reduce the risk of infection or spreading infection to others:

wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the washroom and when preparing food

o use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available

when coughing or sneezing:o cough or sneeze into a tissue or the

bend of your arm, not your hando dispose of any tissues you have used

as soon as possible in a lined waste basket and wash your hands afterwards

avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands

Vulnerable populations

There is an increased risk of more severe outcomes for Canadians:

aged 65 and over with compromised immune systems with underlying medical conditions

People that fall into these categories should reconsider attending gatherings. This includes large gatherings and even smaller events in crowded or enclosed settings.

If you have symptoms (cough, fever or difficulty breathing), do not attend a mass gathering, event or places where people gather. You could put someone whose health is vulnerable at risk.
