Dear Parents/Caregivers Firstly, I would like to acknowledge and thank you all for your understanding around changing the date of Sports Day. Whilst we love to have as many helpers and spectators on the day, the safety and well-being of the students is a consideration we cannot ignore. I recognise that many families made arrangements to attend and then were unable due to the change. I am reminded of a sports day a couple of years ago when the oval was very wet and we had injuries at the high jump and a young lady slipped in the sprints and required medical assistance in the form of an ambulance to the Mount Gambier Hospital. Thank you once again. Overall, it was a very successful day on Monday with Powell claiming victory over O’Leary , Shelton and Keegan. The staff were very happy with the conduct of the students and praised their efforts. As we head towards the end of the term students are busy completing summative tasks and staff are collecting final data and evidence for reports. It is with sadness we farewell Kirrily McPherson. Kirrily has been a most valuable school support officer, assisting children with learning and we wish her well in her new endeavours. It is also with sadness that we will be saying farewell to a couple of other long time Mulga Street staff members. Rose Povey will be retiring and Jude Coleman has won a position teaching Japanese at another site. Both Rose and Jude have been at Mulga Street a very long time and will be sorely missed. We wish them all the best for the future. In the Advertiser today I read a very interesting article around screen time and sleep. The recommendation from Australian and Canadian researchers is no screen time at all for children under two and up to one hour for toddlers and pre-schoolers or risk impacting your child’s cognitive (intellectual), physical, and social development. The article goes on to talk about sharing screen time with your child for learning about the world around them. Some alternatives and great activities to assist with your child’s development are board games with a die or dice, playing outside (water play, mud play, building cubbies, bike riding, playground) card games, puzzles, playdough, creative play, reading and story-telling. Have a great weekend everyone. Mardi McClintock Tamarin Condon

SUSTAINABILITY A Waste Watch Warrior returns... Our present Waste Watch Warrior Student Leaders – Landon Lefever (Year 7), Brooke Moulden and Logan
Telford (Year 6) were very fortunate to spend time with a past WWW, Caitlin Smith recently. Caitlin began her journey of leadership 7 years ago at MSPS, continued it into Mount Gambier High and then, Newcastle in NSW. “Being in a leadership role at such an early age (Year 5) gave me the confidence to realise that I wanted to be a voice of change. Being part of the WWW team kick-started this for me. Because of my role, I captained O’Leary, was a peer support at Mt. High, a house captain and continued my passion for the environment with Mr Roach who was head of the recycling team. I also took part in Youth Forum (Young Environment Leaders Program as it is called now). I will attend The University of Newcastle in 2018 and my course is Environmental Science and Management, which is a 3 year study, leading into jobs such as marine biology”, Caitlin explained. Landon, Brooke and Logan had many questions for Caitlin and she in turn, was keen to know how MSPS was connecting quality environment based learning to the world in which we live. Caitlin’s time, conversation and sharing of experiences left our 3 Waste Watch Warriors inspired and with some thoughts to consider for their future beyond MSPS.

WHITE RIBBON DAY EVENT
Friday, 24th of November
This year White Ribbon Day falls on Saturday 25th of November, therefore as a school we will celebrate White Ribbon on Friday 24th November (tomorrow). Students will be able to wear white to school, take part in a short assembly shouting no to violence against women and share in a free sausage sizzle (1 sausage per child so lunch is still required for your child). I have also organised face painting which will simply be a small white ribbon painted on your child’s face or arm. If you DO NOT want your child’s face painted for whatever reason please have your child return the letter I sent home last week. Thanks, have a great day. James Egan - Wellbeing Leader

ECHOS OF PINK FLOYD On Friday 17th November “Echoes of Pink Floyd” performed at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre here in Mt Gambier. The band is a tribute to “Pink Floyd” and on the night sung many of the songs made famous by the original band. As a part of the performance, they approached Mulga Street and Compton Primary Schools’ combined choirs to assist by providing them with a group to sing Pink Floyd’s smash hit “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2”. The group ranging from Year 5-7 were excited by this experience, took charge of their choreography to support their performance and were able to participate in a “sound check” with a real performing band and see what happens before the concert begins. Parents were supported by the offering of a free ticket to watch the show, were able to see their child perform and thoroughly enjoyed this saying “it was great, the kids were amazing”. Congratulations to all students who participated, stepped out of their comfort zone and were true “Rock Stars” on the night.
Mardi and I could not have been prouder – what a wonderful way for our school to showcase our skills within The Arts! Tamarin Condon - Choir Trainer
