Year 7 Camp: Well, Year 7 have returned home happy but tired from their first
camp at Bosco College. All reports indicate that it was a resounding success with
all students engaged and really enjoying themselves. The weather was fair and the
activities challenging. It was a great opportunity for all students to get to know each
other and staff better. The purpose of the camp is making the students feel part
of the Bosco community and to get a real sense of the College being ‘a Home that
welcomes’! Thanks to the following staff for their time and energy: Mrs Morris, Ms
Mantaj, Mrs Cutcliffe, Mrs Callahan, Miss Isgit, Mrs Ledgerwood, Miss Gagen, Miss
Miskle, Mrs Guthrie, Mr Lesch, Mr Brown, Mr Butcher, Mr Katalinic, Mrs Loader and
Fr Peter. Special thanks go to Mrs Millward and Mrs Abbott for the organisation
and leadership of the camp.
Year 7 Family BBQ: A reminder that the annual Year 7 BBQ is on Wednesday 27
March (5:00pm-6:30pm). Hamburgers, veggie burgers and sausage sandwiches
will be provided; please bring your own soft drink (no alcohol permitted). This
is an opportunity for parents of our new Year 7 students to meet staff and other
parents. You also get the opportunity to watch a media presentation about the
camp that your child attended this week. I urge all parents to come and meet
with us. Weather permitting, it is always a nice way to catch up in an informal
way. I look forward to meeting the new parents to the College.
Reminder to Parents: Would all families please urgently return both the Parent Authority Consent Form and
Publication Media Consent Form to the College Office which were emailed to all parents on Wednesday 6 March.

NEWSLETTER22 MARCH 2019 | VOLUME 43 NO. 8 TERM 1 - WEEK 7 - 2019
The Feast of the AnnunciationThis Monday, 25 March, we celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord. This is one of the most important feasts on the Church calendar. It
celebrates the actual incarnation of Jesus –The Word made flesh in the womb of His mother, Mary. The Church’s celebration of the Annunciation is believed
to date to the early 5th century, possibly originating at about the time of the Council of Ephesus (c 431). The Annunciation has always been celebrated on
25 March, exactly nine months before his birth on Christmas Day.

Description of the Artwork - Title: Hands of Mercy
Collective Year 10 painting
This collective Year 10 painting focuses on the
individual interpretation of what mercy is, when
mercy may be needed and how an act of mercy
can be expressed. In order to connect the panels,
students chose a hand gesture that is often
associated with mercy and acts of kindness as their
subject matter. Whilst all panels depict the same
gesture, students depicted their own connections
and associations with mercy.

the school diary.
The main areas that will be covered are:
Managing homework and assignments effectively
by efficient time management.
Learning to be more organised for school and at home.
Working and studying effectively in high school.

PARENT EVENINGGUEST SPEAKER - PAUL DILLONTHURSDAY 4 APRIL, 7PM VALDOCCO CENTRE (COLLEGE HALL)
TOPIC: ‘Risk taking’: Why do teens do the things they do? What can parents do to keep them as safe as possible?
Adolescence is a risky time. As a teen matures and becomes more independent, they experience dramatic hormonal changes, increasing social and peer pressure and have greater access to alcohol and other drugs. This presentation will briefly examine the history of ‘teenagers’, rebellion and the different ‘temptations’ that have existed over time. Using the latest research on the developing brain, it will also discuss why adolescence is a period of ‘risk-taking’ and the reasons why young people make the decisions they do during this time. Sleepovers, parties and gatherings provide teens with valuable opportunities to develop important socializing skills but are not ‘risk-free’.
The presentation will also provide some practical strategies and tips for parents considering allowing their teen to attend such an event to help ensure they are as safe as possible.
All parents from both St John Bosco College and St John Bosco Primary School are welcome to this invaluable Parent Evening.

On Tuesday 26 March, students in Years 7 and 9 will participate in a short online practice Naplan test. The results of this test will not be recorded or collected, however the test will offer students and staff the opportunity to practise how to access and answer questions for the Naplan online tests in May.
Year 9 students will undertake the practice test during Period 3 and Year 7 during period 4 in the Valdocco Centre (College Hall). The test will consist of practice questions based on reading, numeracy and language conventions. Mr Kennedy and the College Internet Support Officers have checked with most students over the last few days to ensure the locked down browser, required to access the test, is installed on each student's computer. Mr Kennedy has sent an email with these instructions on 10 March to Years 7 and 9 parents and students.
Students should ensure they bring:
• their laptop - fully charged with the locked down browser installed
• their charging cable, as a back up in case of battery failure
• a working set of wired headphones or ear buds
• a book to read if they finish early

CONSIDERING STUDYING
MEDICINE OR DENTISTRY?
Some universities in Australia (including the
University of NSW and University of Western Sydney)
require students considering courses in medicine and
dentistry to complete the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) as part of their admissions process.
The test helps universities to select applicants with
the most appropriate abilities and professional
behaviours required for new doctors and dentists
to be successful in their clinical careers. It is used in
collaboration with other admissions processes such
as interviews and academic qualifications.
The UCAT ANZ is a computer-based test
delivered in Pearson VUE test centres
throughout Australia, New Zealand and at some
overseas locations.
Please note that some pathways to medicine /
dentistry / clinical sciences will not require the UCAT.
For some applicants a different test may be required.
For details candidates should refer to the websites of
the universities to which they intend to apply.
The UCAT ANZ test is available to any candidate
whose educational level at the time of sitting the test
is their final year of secondary schooling, or higher.
Registrations for UCAT are now open and close 17 May 2019.
For more information on UCAT and participating
universities visit:

Year 11 Geography Excursion - Garie Beach
On Wednesday 20 March the Year 11 geography classes experienced an excursion to Garie Beach in order to develop a more in depth understanding of the topic we are currently studying: coasts and the impacts that affect the coasts. At the beginning of the day all Year 11 Geography students gathered to board a bus and head to Garie Beach within the National Park.
Upon arrival we were given time to prepare ourselves for what would be an interesting experience. A brief introduction to the learning experiences of the day was provided by our two park rangers Sue and Martin before we began exploring the coastal environment. A short walk was taken to the rock platform, picking up any plastic along the way. Once reaching the platform we were given time to analyse and discover the organisms that inhabited the rock pools. We were then separated into two mixed groups to determine the abiotic features both behind and in front of the sand dune features. Additionally, the separate groups examined and tried catching microorganisms while the remaining group inspected the landforms in the distance, and the differentiating species of the
region. Both groups were granted the opportunity to participate in all activities establishing an understanding of the coastal environment and the interactions of the four spheres.
We then returned to the primary meeting point, to eat lunch and regather our energy, before continuing theory work regarding the natural processes of waves and their impact, and the effects of human activity on the Garie Beach area.
This concluded our insightful and enjoyable excursion to Garie Beach, and definitely broadened our understanding of the coastal environment. We would like to thank Sue and Martin for guiding us throughout the day, and give special thanks to Mrs Babic and Mr Salabay for leading us and aiding in our learning on an exciting day.

YEAR 9 ISTEM: WORKING COLLABORATIVELY TO SOLVE PROBLEMSiSTEM is a Stage 5 elective subject that aims to
integrate the practical skills and knowledge of
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
to solve real-world problems. The subject
encourages students to work collaboratively to
develop creative solutions to these problems using a
structured process of research and experimentation.
Students in Year 9 iSTEM have been developing
these collaboration skills by working in groups to
design and construct a scaled model of a bridge that
could span vehicle and pedestrian access
across Loftus station to alleviate traffic at
Sutherland station. The process of finding a solution
to this problem involved developing structured
experiments and recording findings, working with
balsa wood to construct a model and performing
calculations based on scale.
The class will be looking forward to extending their
collaboration and problem-solving skills as they
embark on developing a cardboard robotic arm
with movements based on the science of hydraulics.
They will be experimenting with using laser cutting
technologies during this process.

The homophones that teachers and students are focusing on in weeks 7 and 8 are where, we’re and wear.
Where is used to ask a question that is related to location or giving directions to a location.
Where are you going? I know where you live.
We’re is a contraction of we are.
We’re (we are) flying to New York tomorrow.
Wear refers to clothing, accessories or equipment on or carried on your body.
You need to wear a tie to the wedding.
OR refers to something being excessively used.
Tyres eventually wear out.
(NOTE: Where is often incorrectly written as were. Were is a verb and the past tense of are,
e.g. We were happy.)
