From our Principal Mrs Janelle Heffernan
Dear Families,
For God, the impossible becomes possible; the tiny mustard seed needs nutrition and light to grow into a huge tree! Does not the same apply to us? For we too, need nourishment. But not only does our body need nourishment, our spiritual life does as well. What have we done recently to nourish our own faith? And that of our family and friends?
Recently we welcomed Spring and as we leave Winter behind we tend to feel re-energised and reinvigorated ready to tackle anything! As we become aware of the signs of the new life of Spring bursting around us, we are reminded of the love, life and energy that are the gifts we receive with each new day. Let us embrace each day as an expression of God’s love for us.
What has happened before in our lives is all passed.
What we had been and what we have done belong to yesterday.
What we are and what we can be - with God’s help - is our TODAY.
One day at a time - this is enough.
Do not look back and grieve over the past for it is gone;
And do not be troubled by the future, for it is yet to come.
Live in the present and make it so beautiful, it will be worth remembering.
It is God who enables us to smile in spite of tears;
To carry on when you feel like giving in;
To pray when you are at a loss for words;
To love even though your heart has been broken time and time again;
To sit calmly when you feel like throwing your hands up in frustration;
To be understanding when nothing seems to make sense;
To listen when you’d rather not hear;
To share your feelings with others because sharing is necessary to ease the load.
Anything is possible because God makes it so.
Life is a series of beginnings which bring us closer to the realisation of our dreams
Father,
Let every day be a dream we can touch,
Let every day be a love we can feel,
Let every day be a reason to live.
Let each of us see Spring as a time of renewal and hope in our lives.
Poetry and Public Speaking
Congratulations to students who performed in the Poetry and Public Speaking competition on Monday. The adjudicators commented positively on the confidence and poise of each of these students as they presented their practiced piece. The adjudicators were overwhelmed by the professional and skilled way the students spoke, and commented on the clarity of their voices, their expression and maturity displayed by each of them. I would like to thank each of them for accepting the
challenge to perform in front of their peers - well done! I would also like to say a huge thank you to Mr Sheridan for his enthusiasm, commitment and foresight in allowing our students the opportunity to expand their literary experiences through this performance! Thank you also to Mrs Allen and Mrs Meineke for being our adjudicators.
Our winners:- Poetry Stage 1 - Ella Collings, Stage 2 - Elijah Hogan, Stage 3 - Charlotte McEwan Brokensha .
Public Speaking Stage 2 - Maude Webster, Stage 3 - Darcy Heffernan, will compete in the Regional Finals in Casino next Tuesday.
Lismore Race Day Gazetted Holiday - Thursday 19th September
School will operate as normal on Lismore Race Day. However, be aware that there will be NO CANTEEN due to this holiday. Please ensure that your child has sufficient food for the day. Buses will operate as normal on the Race Day Thursday. Thank you for your support in this matter.
School Uniform
As it is coming to the end of Term 3, the students’ pride and presentation in the wearing of their School Uniform is waning. It is a timely reminder for:
1) Hairstyles – Girls should have all long hair tied back and boys are to have a conventional hairstyle.
2) Black school shoes and joggers. No coloured soles, stripes or shoelaces.
3) White sports socks (5cm above the ankle).
4) School hats must be worn.
We appreciate your support in this area.
Professional Development Day
Just a reminder that we have a Professional Development Day (PUPIL FREE DAY) on Friday, 27th September. Active Kids will be operating on this day if you wish to take advantage of this service. Go to the Active Kids tab on our School Website for information on how to enrol and make a booking. We thank you for supporting us in our Professional Development opportunities.
From our Assistant Principal - Mission Mr Danny Hatchman
As you know, you child attended the Accendere Retreat for Year 4 students. This was an opportunity for students from surrounding schools to come together for fun, music and games with a focus upon Scripture and its meaning in their lives. Accendere means to switch on and to produce and spark the flame of faith.
The Yr 4 students certainly had an enjoyable day, capably led by the Youth Ministry Officers and teachers from their schools and now...
...the children would like to invite you to the school Hall where they can share their learning!
From our Leader of Pedagogy Mrs Samantha Lynch Kindergarten - KBE - GEOGRAPHY
Kindergarten students are learning about Special Places in Geography. They have been discussing special places such as their bedroom, the Church and their classroom. On Wednesday KBE were in the playground drawing maps from a bird’s eye view of their special playground space.
Year 1 - Music
1CB students were creating compositions in Music last week. They explained that their compositions had to comprise of the either the notes ABC or CDE. The aim of the composition was to portray a story to their audience. After creating their compositions they were presenting them through the use of a
variety of instruments.
Year 2 - 2HR - SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
2HR students had been designing possum homes in Science and Technology as Mrs Rogusz had a problem. There was a cheeky possum living in her roof and she wanted it out! She was hoping that her class could design and make the ultimate possum home so that it would choose their design over her roof. They needed to justify their choice of materials and design and give feedback to one another to
improve their creations. I wonder if it was successful?
Year 3 - 3MT - LIBRARY
3MT students were caught in action reading their favourite books in the Library this week. I asked them what they enjoyed about the Library. Here are some of their responses. ‘Books train my brain’
‘The Library is a learning place’
‘The Library is a quiet place to think’
‘It has comfortable seats’
‘Mrs Morrissey is the best Library teacher ever. Everything is in order, she helps us find the books we like and she is so kind’.
Year 4 - ENGLISH - SUCCESS CRITERIA
In English, Year 4 students have been reading, ‘How to Bee’ by Bren Macdibble. This text explores a lot of themes which the students have been learning to express an opinion about, supported by information and evidence to persuade their audience. The students across Year 4 have developed Success Criteria for their unit of work so that each student is able to articulate what they are able to do and set goals for future learning. This criteria is also being used for students to give feedback to one another on their learning.
Year 5 - ENGLISH - POETRY
Year 5 students have been exploring Poetry this term. 5MS has created a number of different poems about things that interest them. They brainstormed a variety of rhyming words about their theme and then explored writing poetry with every second line in rhyme. The results were fantastic and they have displayed the final products in the walkways outside their
classroom. 5JS students also attended the Eisteddford for Poetry Recital, and won first place. Year 6 - MATHS
Year 6 students have been working on Fractions. The problem solving, reflection and focus that these students have had in solving their Rich Mathematical Tasks has been amazing! Let’s see how you go with one of their Rich Tasks…
The Best Chocolate Cookies Ever!
Mr Hatchman has asked Year 6 to bake Chocolate Chip Cookies to be used for raising money for Caritas. The recipe below makes 20 small choc chip cookies. Mr Hatchman feels as though we need at least 5 times this amount to get us started. In order to begin making the cookies, Mr Hatchman needs your help to calculate exactly how much of each ingredient is required.
INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, melted
1/3 cup (66 g) granulated sugar
2/4 cup (104g) packed light brown sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon (5ml) vanilla extract
3/6 teaspoon baking soda
5/10 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups (186g) all-purpose flour
1 3/6 cups (255g) chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk)
Enabling Prompts:
If I have to make 5 times the amount of cookies, how can I work out what 5 times the amount of butter is?
How can I work out what 5 times the amount of sugar is?
Extending Prompts:
Realising that 100 cookies will not be enough, Mr Hatchman has asked us to bake cookies for the whole school. If there are 600 children at our school, how much of each ingredient will Mr Hatchman need to buy in order for us to make a cookie for each child?
If Mr Hatchman has allocted $500 for fundraising supplies, how much money will the cookies take out of his budget? What fraction of the $500 is this? (For the 5 times the amount and the amount to make cookies for 600 children). (You will need to use a device to find the costs of the items).
From our Leader of Sport Mr Brendan Tickle Boots of Destiny
Boots of Destiny is a new charity which has been established to give unwanted
Football equipment a proud new owner (kids in Uganda). More information about the
charity can be found at www.facebook.com/bootsofdestiny/
St Carthage’s, along slide Boots of Destiny is asking for your support. With the
Football season coming to a close, now is the perfect time to donate. We are asking
that you go through your cupboard and donate any old boots, shin pads or Football
clothing. Donating their old equipment provides kids with the chance to see that the game of Football spreads
much wider than their local club and competition. The Richmond Zone has started the ball rolling by donating
3 sets of Football jerseys. A donation bin is located in the Front Office. We would be extremely grateful for your support!
Cricket
Sydney Sixers all-rounder, Ben Dwarshuis, and NSW Blues player, Chad Sammut, were in Lismore last week as part of the Cricket NSW Country Blitz. The students in Years 5 and 6 had the privilege of engaging in a question and answer session, as well as batting, fielding and bowling activities. The Cricket season is just around the corner. For more information about how your child can be involved in Cricket please contact Marist Brothers Cricket Club at [email protected] or https://www.facebook.com/mbccLismore/
NSWPSSA Rugby Union Carnival
In Week 6, Riley Flood attended the NSWPSSA Rugby Union Carnival in Western Sydney.
After training on Monday, Riley was named Captain of the Polding Team. This is an accolade
which Riley should be very proud of. The carnival was an experience that will last a lifetime.
Being named captain is a true reflection of Riley’s leadership qualities, sportsmanship and
determination. Congratulations Riley on your outstanding achievements on the field.
Richmond Zone Gala Days
The Richmond Zone Football, Netball and Multi Sports Gala Days were held on Friday 30th August.
Designed around inclusivity, fun and participation, the gala days are a fantastic opportunity for the
students to experience sport, interact with their peers and staff and develop a love of physical activity.
Football
Two teams attended the Football Gala Day; St Carthage’s Gold (Years 5 & 6 students) and St
Carthage’s Blue (Year 6 students). The students were commended throughout the day on their sportsmanship and
determination. Congratulations to St Carthage’s Gold who progressed through the pool stage of the competition and beat Holy
Family 2-0 in the final. Thank you to Ben Eaton for coaching St Carthage’s Blue and Mr Matthews for training both teams and
coaching St Carthage’s Gold on the Day. We wish St Carthage’s Gold the best of luck at the Diocesan Football Gala Day on
Wednesday 25th September.
Netball
Students from Years 5 and 6 attended the Netball Gala Day. The girls competed in 6 games throughout
the day. It was a day full of fun, friendship and laughter. Thank you Mrs McRae for coaching the students.
Multi Sports
Over 90 St Carthage’s students attended the Multi Sports Gala Day at Hepburn Park. The students were provided with the
opportunity to participate in a range of sports; AFL, NRL, Big Ball Soccer, Cricket, Tennis, Table Tennis and Hockey. Thank you
Mrs Windsor, Mrs Collings, Mrs Maginnity and Mrs McFadden for accompanying the students.
Touch Football Gala Day
12 teams of students from Year 3 and 4 travelled to Hepburn park to compete in the
NSW Touch Association Gala Day. The theme underpinning the gala day was
participation and fun; there is a place on the field for everyone. There certainly was a
place on the field for everyone, students, parents and teachers. It was a new, but very
enjoyable experience for many of our students. I would like to extend my appreciation to
the parents and teachers who kindly volunteered to coach teams and accompany the
students. The supportive and inclusive environment that you fostered ensured that all of
our students could enjoy themselves and develop a range of new skills. It was a true
reflection of the wonderful school community that we have at St Carthage’s Primary School.
Sporting Schools Program
The Sporting Schools Program for Term 3 has concluded. Year 2 participated in Cricket, Year 1 in Basketball and
Kindergarten in Rugby League. From all reports, the students loved every minute of it. The energetic external coaches
ensured that all students were engaged in a fun program.
Lismore Eisteddfod
On Friday 30th August, 5JS participated in the Poetry Recital sec-
tion of the Lismore Eisteddfod. This is a Primary Schools’ competi-
tion and is open to all schools in Lismore district and was held in the
Lismore Workers’ Club Auditorium. This section required the class to
present two contrasting items which the class has been preparing
since the beginning of the term.
The two poems we presented were Mulga Bills Bicycle, by Banjo Paterson and Homework Oh Homework, by Jack Prelutsky. The Adjudicator’s comments were very complementary stating that the “projection was outstanding and your energy was wonderful. You preformed as one voice. A great body of work. Well done.” These type of remarks are exactly what you want to hear and I would like to thank our parents who came along and supported 5JS and to see them being awarded the trophy and a very high mark of 89 points.
Skoolbag APP
We strongly recommend that you download the SKOOLBAG app for St Carthage’s. This app will keep you
up to date with cancellations, Newsletters, events, reminders or changes of arrangements at school. This is
another form of communication at St Carthage’s School. Please follow the prompts below.
Calling for volunteers—
we need your help!
Our students really enjoy participating in the Common-
wealth Bank School Banking program running we
need your help.
The program requires a volunteer School Banking
Co-Ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution
of School banking rewards. This only takes a small
amount of your time one day a week and the Com-
monwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the
program. Your help with the program will greatly
benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and
also help with general resources for students.
Currently, School Banking is Wednesday.
If you are interested in volunteering for this great
program, please contact the School Office.
