The Year of the Monkey began on 8 February 2016. According to Chinese astrology, people born in the Year of the Monkey are smart, quick-witted and adventurous. Folklores from around the world often show the monkey’s quick-thinking ability.

Venture into the world of the monkeys to learn why not all primates are created alike. Are these creatures clever or mischievous? In More Than Monkeys exhibition, visitors find out how monkeys and apes live, their diet, their families and way of life. The monkeys’ built allow them to move with ease in the trees. They search for their favourite foods and by staying off the ground, they keep away from dangerous predators. Find out the difference between Old World and New World monkeys, why Howler monkeys make very loud calls and how some Macaques keep warm during winter.

Have some fun and test your skill by stringing up colourful monkey cut-outs, or hunt for items associated with monkeys and apes in the word search game.

The Liechtenstein National Museum has donated a special postbox to Singapore Philatelic Museum. This postbox is one of the only three in their archive collection.

The postbox was used in Liechtenstein 20 years ago. It was one of 11 postboxes used in the country. Such postboxes have been replaced by Swiss postboxes.

Our museum thanks Prof Dr Rainer Vollkommer, Director of Liechtenstein National Museum for adding this interesting postbox to our collection.

This 151 year-old postal item is a unique extra large piece of wrapper, measuring 38cm W x 53cm H. The wrapper was used to send a package from Singapore to Paris via the Suez Canal in 1865. There are 388 early Straits Settlements stamps (1856 - 1864) on the wrapper. The total postage adds up to 134 rupees, 10 annas and 8 pies, which was equivalent to six months’ salary of a skilled worker in Singapore at that time. Based on the value of the stamps on the wrapper, the estimated weight of the package was more than 4kg. The wrapper is probably the highest paid postal item in existence. It is said to be one of its kind! Mr Tan Ah Ee, a renowned philatelist in Singapore and overseas, donated the postal wrapper to Singapore Philatelic Museum in November 2015. Mr Tan has won numerous awards for his collections in international philatelic exhibitions. This donation is an important addition to the Singapore Philatelic Museum’s Straits Settlements Collection. Our museum thanks Mr Tan Ah Ee for this valuable donation.
