A Rabbit-Tale By

Pastor Mark Haas

3

There will be some significant changes coming into my life in a few weeks: to my checkbook

and to my family!

The first relates to paying taxes! On September 15, my third quarterly estimated tax payment

for 2013 is due to the federal government. For “Ministers of Religion,” we file and pay taxes

from a W-2 just like almost everyone else, except that for Social Security tax purposes, we are

considered self-employed, which is an advantage, especially with a housing allowance deduc-

tion; however, it also means we need to pay estimated quarterly taxes. After all of my deduc-

tions each year, I rarely pay US Treasury taxes, but I do pay the current rate for Social Security

taxes, which means my checkbook balance is never an accurate accounting of how much

spendable cash is available. I was day dreaming the other day about what new furniture to put

in the living room once I get around to having the carpets cleaned, when it dawned on me that

the disposable cash I thought I had was my “savings” for the quarterly tax payment! Oh, well,

the carpets still aren’t cleaned yet, thanks to my procrastination, so there’s no rush on furni-

ture!

The second relates to my extended family in Southern California. You may recall the last sev-

eral years I’ve gone south between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays to visit first my

brothers and mother in Temecula, and then Dee’s sister’s family in Buena Park for New Year’s

Eve. Well, though mom may be in a new assisted living arrangement and my brothers and their

wives still in their Temecula homes, the second stop on the visit most likely will be in…Las

Vegas! Sue and Dan are both now retired and on September 19 will be moving into their new

home, purchased a couple of years ago, when prices were really bottoming out in the Vegas

market. Their oldest child and her husband have lived there for several years, also teachers,

and the Nevada tax rates and closeness to children has been a strong draw. But, that also means

at least one extra day of driving should we decide to go that far! It also means a bit longer time

away from Placerville! As the next few months unfold, there may be some decisions made that

will deviate my previous plans from being as simple as they’ve relatively been the last four

years.

There are the usual September activities for me, too. The first week of the month will have me

back in Livermore for three days of District related meetings due to my role on the Board of

Directors. Then we have our annual Circuit Retreat at Meyers, near Lake Tahoe, though I may

only go for a Monday morning rather than portions of three days. I’m still looking forward to

the fourth week of the month when I’m scheduled for my annual vacation at Irish Beach on the

Mendocino County coast. (I must have hit a positive chord with last month’s article…I don’t

recall having as much feedback as this past month has drawn! Thanks!) And when I return in

early October, I turn around and head for Fresno for three days of District Pastoral Conference

and catching up especially with Pastor Les Self who will be joining us from an Interim assign-

ment in Hilo, Hawaii. By mid-October the traveling will stop until Christmas week, so all in

all, a busy early fall as we prepare for the Thanksgiving/Advent/Christmas cycle.

On the Internet this morning was an article about quotes that we think are correct, but only

close and not exactly what we thought they were. It used, for its primary example, dialog

from the Star Wars film, “The Empire Strikes Back,” where we think we know that Darth

Vader says, “Luke, I am your father.” Sounds good to me! However, the actual dialog does

not have Darth address his son as Luke. He actually is replying to a question, when he says,

“No. I am your father.” That seems to lose some fatherly tenderness! But it also brings up a

phrase that to me is also pertinent: “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Which is the gist of this month’s comments! “The more things change” (like checkbook dis-

posable cash and residences), “the more they stay the same” (meaning there will always be

taxes to be paid; and, people are mobile and we’ll visit them nonetheless!).

From the moment of our conception in our mother’s womb until the moment of our physical

death, every day is different, even though it may seem just like yesterday. Look in the mir-

ror: examine those age spots, count the hairs on your head, try to run 50 feet without stop-

ping at age 10, 25, 50, and 75 and tell me you’re just as fast! Where did that dark brown

mane go, anyway? There are lots of means to identify change! Yet, from the day of our spiri-

tual conception through the gracious gift of faith, the one thing that has never changed is our

Father’s never-ending love for us in Christ Jesus, our Lord, Redeemer, Savior, and Friend!

As I am preparing for this week’s worship I am reading Hebrews 13 which is the source of

the September 1 Epistle lesson, where the author states, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday

and today and forever.” If ever we need stability, comfort and hope, that is a sure saying,

“the same!” So, the “more things change” around us, the more Jesus stays “the same.” And

that sameness is found in His dying on the cross to forgive us our sins, kind of love! It’s

found in the words of the Father to keep His promises of preservation, for which it is our

duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. It’s found in confession that I cannot by my

own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ or come to him, but the Holy Spirit has called

me by the Gospel, enlightened and sanctified me. “The more things change, the more they

stay the same” with God! It’s why we start many of our worship services with the respon-

sive, “God is good! All the time!” It’s why we share the “Shalom,” … Peace be with you …

in each service…our never-changing Lord is our confidence in this ever-changing world. He

is our Rock and Redeemer!

Have a great month. Do not be afraid…please recall Paul in Philippians: I can do all things

through Him who strengthens me…and be assured of Jesus comfort: I am with you always,

to the end of the age!

Yours in Christ’s service,

Pastor Mark Haas, Soli Deo Gloria

Just a Reminder for Altar Guild: Remove the candles into the wooden holder and fill each candle with the liquid wax. Light each candle to make sure they are all burning at

the same height. Please do not cut wicks to adjust flame, simply push down or pull up gently. Return the candles to the holders and

make sure they are secure and straight.

Fill two(2) communion trays, four (4) on the Sundays when communion is held in both services. Fill all center cups in each tray with the white grape juice. This amount is subject to change when we grow in membership!!

Keep the filled trays in the refrigerator.

Straighten and fill in the cards as needed and make sure all the pencils are sharp in each pew.

Fill the coffee and water pots. The directions are on the closet door.

All these functions can be done on Friday or Saturday.

On Sunday set out communion prior to service and clean up and put it away after the service.

Katy’s Corner

It is hard to believe that summer is over and school is in full swing already! I am sad

summer is over, but I am looking forward to fall, it is my favorite season. Fall back

home meant wearing sweaters, and sometimes our winter coats, corn mazes, hay rides,

apple picking and Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks. At Concordia Chicago it meant

jumping in the leaf piles, working on the fall show for theatre and making new friends

with the people on your floor. I am happy that I do not have to go to 8 am classes any-

more, work on homework every night, or have to worry about noisy floor mates or fire

alarms waking me up at 3 in the morning. This is was even worse if I had one of my 8

am classes that morning. I do however miss the excitement of starting school and seeing

friends you haven’t seen in awhile. I wish I could have bottled up the excitement and en-

thusiasm from the beginning of the school year and save it for the end of the school

year!

There is, however, plenty of exciting things going on at FLC! Youth group has officially

started up and I couldn't be more blessed to work with such a wonderful group of kids.

We have talked about worship and looked at popular music from today from a Christian

stand point. There have been some great conversations, but we've really had a great time

getting to know each other! Confirmation is also starting up for 7th graders. Please keep

this group in your prayers as these students dive deeper into their faith and what it all

means.

I have also been blessed this past month to get to know a few of you better! This might

have been over a dinner or spending time together at a Bible Study or meeting. I some-

times wish it was acceptable to always have a name tag on so I could remember every-

one’s name! I apologize for how bad I am with names; I am slowly learning and study-

ing my directory.

I am looking forward to continue to sing with BHG and working with everyone on that

great team! I am excited about Sunday School starting again this month and getting to

know the kids better in the congregation. I am blessed with the opportunity to work with

both age groups and share God’s awesome love with them!

Whew, there is a lot to be excited about and blessed with! God is truly good!

-Katy ☺

CONTINUING/COMING IN SEPTEMBER 2013…

We conduct our worship services at 9 AM (Contemporary)

and 10:30 AM (Traditional). Adult Bible Classes on Sunday

are offered at 8 AM and 9:15 AM. Sunday School for nursery/

preschool age children through age 12 RESUMES September

8! Children will leave the sanctuary during the early service,

following the Lamb’s Sermon, for classes in the Fellowship

Hall and Sunday School wing.

REVITALIZATION

We continue to receive donations to the “Revitalization Fund” established to

raise monies to offset the expenses of calling a DCE/Family Life Minister-

Intern. You may recall that our stewardship program (2011) involves these

items…Financial Growth by Three Means: (1) Commitment to tithing, (2)

Increased contributions annually, and (3) Specific pledges to the Revitaliza-

tion Fund.

MUSICIANS/SINGERS

“By His Grace,” our contemporary service worship leaders

are seeking out more instrumentalists and singers to accent

their ministry. In the meantime, Bill on guitar and Denise

on keyboard as instrumentalists are the core along with

Clydene, Jenny and Bill as vocalists! Our DCE Intern,

Katy, has joined the group and will sing as often as possi-

ble. Do you know someone, maybe you, who could join

along? Let Bill Rosenberry or pastor know.

LITTLE BACK PACKS

The donations of nutritional snacks and drinks are very much

appreciated by students at Schnell School! This ministry will

resume during the fall school months! Your generosity has

been outstanding! Watch and listen for start dates! Thank you

very much!

Sacramento Valley Chapter Lutherans for Life - Current Events

Exciting events and challenging times (growing pains) are taking place within our

local chapter of Lutherans for Life Chapter. The excitement is in having new

members and new officers. At our July 13th meeting, Richard Hintz was elected

president. Other officers are: Vice President - Lois Brauer; Secretary - Joanne

Hintz; and Treasurer - James Brauer. At our August 4th meeting, we had 20 peo-

ple present (some have became members).

On August 21st, we held our second fund raiser with Chevys at four different lo-

cations. At this time, we don't know the results but we will let you know the total

amount of the proceeds (hopefully in our next news article). Thanks all of you

who came out for a fun evening and delicious dinner showing your support for

Lutherans for Life. In addition, we thank the staff and management of Chevys for

being so helpful in setting up the event, etc.

In October, we will have our third annual sexuality event for both parents and

teens. If you as parents, guardians, or grandparents haven't checked this out be-

fore, I encourage you to do so. Karen Kropf, the speaker from Positively Waiting,

has a completely different way of discussing "SEX' with teens. She first meets

with the adults and shares with them what she is going to tell the teens. It's not the

typical "stuff" they hear in the public schools but Karen shares personal experi-

ences and consequences. After parents hear what Karen is going to share, they are

eager to have their teens and friends hear her message. So we have several days

between her presentation to the parents and speaking to the teens where the adults

can encourage their teens to attend the event but also talk to other parents about

sending their teens. I have a grandson who balked last year when I wanted him to

attend--he had heard all about it at school but he went to the event. Recently when

I told him we were having Karen speak again this year, he became excited and his

first thought was to invite his girl friend; and then others he could invite. Parents

and teens who attended the past two events were both encouraged and excited af-

terwards. Please today, put these dates on your calendars: October 16, 6 - 8 p.m.

for the parents' session and October 20, 2 - 4 p.m. a session JUST FOR TEENS.

These will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 5901 Lonetree Blvd., Rock-

lin. We will have information about Karen and the event(s) on our website

www.lfl-sac.org. On-line registration is encouraged.

Our Chapter continues to ask for your prayers--that God will guide and direct us

where and how He wants us to use this ministry to touch lives affected with so

many life concerns. We pray that with His guidance we can be a beacon of love,

hope, help, and encouragement to our congregations and communities.

Serving Him with love,

Lois Brauer, Vice President
