Shipping is undergoing a major transformation moving from largely isolated vessel assets, with limited communi-cation to the shore, to one of high-speed interconnectivity and big data enabling the so-called “smart ship”.

Smart shipping are the new watchwords in the maritime industry as the real power of the internet fully reaches vessels sailing the world’s oceans and connecting them with the shoreside to reap efficiencies, lower costs and improve management.

One of the companies very much involved in the smart shipping revolution is satellite communications firmInmarsat. The first quarter of this year sees it rolling out its much anticipated Global Xpress service with much higher bandwidth at more affordable rates offering a huge range of potential developments in terms of the smart ship.

Speaking to Seatrade Maritime News recently at the open-ing of its new Asia – Pacific headquarters in Singapore Inmarsat ceo Rupert Pearce said they are seeing a major shift as the shipping industry realises the benefits of con-nectivity. “The big transformation in our maritime business

Welcome to the‘smart shipping’ revolution

is coming about because of the move from an uncon-nected ship, or a ship where communications were seen as a cost, to be used sparingly, to what we are calling the digital or smart ship era where people are realising the investment in connectivity is an enabler,” Pearce explains.

“It’s an enabler to a tremendous turn on investment towards a much more efficient enterprise. This means efficiency through automation, through offboarding and through digital enablement through telematics consulting that can optimise the way a ship is run and managed.”

Greater connectivity is set to result in an accelerated development of applications to make the management of ships more efficient. “Historically the maritime industry has been very low on applications and use of ICT,” notes Ronald Spithout president of Inmarsat Maritime.

Ships are also now being built with the technology on-board that produces huge amounts of data on vessel per-formance, which can then be input into these applications to make operations more efficient. Spithout notes that the Maersk Triple-E containerships come fitted with 3,500 sensors. “There’s whole new world opening for managers of the vessels if you can manage that data.”

These cost savings can be very significant and Pearce cites examples in the oil services industry where con-sultants have shown that the “digital oil field” pumps oil 30% more efficiently than the “unconnected oil field”. “The internet of everything and the machine to machine environment is transforming the business of running complex machines, especially large numbers of complex machines,” he states.

So will all this lead to the autonomous or remotecontrolled ship in the long term? Inmarsat is involvedas a technology partner in an autonomous ship project with Rolls Royce. Whether this project will lead to an au-tonomous or semi-autonomous ship remains to be seen.

However, Spithout says what is important to Inmarsat is the application development it will spur, many of which make their way to the global merchant fleet as they will make ships greener and easier to operate, regardless of the overall outcome of the project.

The topic on smart shipping and the dynamic role oftechnology in shaping the future of the maritime andoffshore industry will be one of the topics discussedat Sea Asia 2017. Heading into its 6th edition, the highly acclaimed and interactive Sea Asia conference putsit at the forefront of regional maritime events, whereinternational thought-leaders will address the latest topics, debate on key trends, and discuss opportunities andchallenges facing the maritime and offshore businesses from a commercial perspective.

Sea Asia 2017 will be held on 25 - 27 April at the Marina Bay Sands®, Singapore and is co-organised by Seatrade and the Singapore Maritime Foundation. Sea Asia, the premier maritime and offshore conference and exhibition in Asia seeks to serve as a focal point for the globaland local maritime communities to network, explorenew business and showcase their maritime innovations, equipment and services.

As the year moves closer to 2017, a major milestone awaits Singapore’s bunkering industry, bringing with it enhanced operational efficiency for global ships refueling at the Asian port.

From 1 January 2017, the Maritime and Port Authorityof Singapore (MPA) will enforce the mandatory useof the mass flow meter (MFM) technology for bunker custody transfer from a MFM-equipped bunker tankerto a receiving vessel.

Industry players, from fuel suppliers to ship operators, have applauded the bold move by Singapore, as the use of MFM has been proven to not just raise bunker measurement accuracy and transparency to a new level, but also to significantly improve efficiency by shortening each bunker delivery time by as much as three hours.

The technological progress for Singapore will help to reinforce its position as the world’s biggest bunkering port through improvements in operational efficiency and productivity, and the adoption of MFM in bunker deliveries also lend confidence to global shipowners on the quantity of fuel they receive.

In February 2016, Singapore launched the world’s first Technical Reference standard for bunker mass flow meter, referred to as TR48:2015, which covers a set of core requirements for metering system qualification, installation, testing procedures and documentation for bunker custody transfer using the MFM.

Check out the Sea Asia 2017 list of exhibitors nearerto the event date for contacts of MFM suppliers.Jason Electronics (Pte) Ltd is one of the Sea Asia 2017exhibitors which carry MFM products.
