SENIOR GIRLS SOCCER PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS…Again! For the second consecutive year the squad captured the Provincial Championship with a 2-1 OT win over Fleetwood Park. The team went undefeated (20-0-2) scoring 94 goals and only allowing 7! A fabulous season from a very talented, wonderful group of young women. Best wishes to our grads Kiara Buono, Julia Kostecki & Jadyn Vance. We will miss you.

GENOCIDE 12 MEMORIAL PROJECT A new course at Centennial, Genocide Studies 12, offers students glimpses into tragic genocides in Armenia, Nazi-occupied Europe, Cambodia, the Former Yugoslavia, Rwanda and Darfur. As a reflective final project, students created their own genocide memorials to remember the targets of these genocides. Students included their own learning, artistic skill, and sometimes family connections to make these projects. On presentation day, administration and teachers visited the classroom to discuss students’ work with them.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

It’s hard to believe that another school year is coming to an end. The end of the year is commemorated by several acknowledgements of achievements. We have honoured students with our Excellence in Education Banquet, Awards Ceremony, Athletics Banquet, and Aboriginal Honouring Ceremony. This month will of course recognize the completion of 13 years of education for our grade twelve students. As parents, you have much for which to be proud. Your children have worked hard to come this far and although they may have had their hiccups along the way, they have successfully come to the end of a long, committed journey. On June 18th, we celebrated this achievement with their Commencement Ceremony at the Orpheum Theatre. My hope for our graduates is that they continue to pursue their passions, take time to cherish their relationships with others, and live their life with purpose and pride. Parents of this year’s grads, I want you to know that for the first time in the 22 years that I have been in education, not a single grad prank occurred. Instead, students came together with a BBQ on the last day and then spent their remaining time together in the foyer listing to music from High School Musical as they said their goodbyes and shed some tears. We wish the Graduates of 2019 the very best in these new endeavours. They are a wonderful group of students.

As the year comes to a close, we will unfortunately be saying farewell to a few staff members who have been a part of the Centennial community. While good-byes are difficult for us, they sometimes signal new beginnings and opportunities for those leaving. Ms. Zimmer, one of our Vice Principals is moving to Gleneagle Secondary. Her dedication to Centennial has been second to none, often working into the very late hours of each evening. We wish her the very best in her new school. We are also saying goodbye to Ms. Westermark and Ms. Rein who are both retiring. They have a long history with Centennial and will be dearly missed by many, many students they have taught over the years. We wish them the very best on this next journey into retirement. We are also saying goodbye to Ms. Manojlovic, Ms. Gray, Ms. Han, Mr. Malakoff, Ms. Grandy, Ms. Munroe, Ms. Pirvu, and Mr. Stangl. We wish them all very well and are very grateful that we had them as part of our Centennial community.

On a final note as we near the end of the school year, I’d like to personally thank you for trusting us to educate your children. We know that you have sent your child to Centennial believing that we can help them achieve their goals. We take our role as educators very seriously and know the impact that a teacher can have on a child’s life. We also know that everything you do as parents is so critical to the well-being of your children and that it is truly a collective effort in supporting the development of our youth. The talents your children possess inspire me on a daily basis and it is their excitement, enthusiasm, and willingness to take risks that make me realize there is no problem too big or challenge insurmountable. Great things cannot happen without great people and this school certainly has no shortage of talent. On behalf of our staff, we wish you and your children an enjoyable, relaxing, and well-deserved summer.
