Jumping on the IT band-wagon early, Ms Lowe became the PD/H/PE computer wizard, helping introduce OASIS, MOODLE, digital photography, video and many more applications to her colleagues. She was responsible for many successful PD/H/PE computer displays. She will always be remembered for losing the school keys in the last two weeks of service. Ms Lowe’s panic was abated when the keys were finally found. Ms Lowe will be uniquely remembered as failing to accept Noosa High School (considered a prime teaching school) as her first appointment of which Eden Marine High School is extremely grateful. Principal’s Report Week 6 Term 3 2012The frenzy of activity has continued over the last few weeks giving the school environment a real sense of energy.

The major highlight has been the Sapphire Coast Learning Community (SCLC) Performing Arts Festival during Education Week. This was the fourth annual performance of this event running over two nights in celebrating public education and the performing arts. The capacity audience on both nights were treated to amazing performances from students. The students from Eden Marine High were fantastic doing themselves, their families and their school proud. Many staff and helpers need to be recognised for their hard work and contribution but a particular mention needs to go to Sam and Robyn Martin for their effort and expertise in supporting our students.

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, I attended the Illawara and South East Region (ISER) annual awards presentation at Jerrabomberra on Friday August 3rd where I was proud to accept an award on behalf of Eden Marine High School for “Excellence in Aboriginal Education”. It was great to see Eden Public School receive a similar award and also to have number of our partner schools receiving a variety of awards. This recognition once again reinforces the quality of education being delivered in our local schools.

On Saturday, September 4th, I was part of a large group of people who attended the 150th celebration at Towamba Public School. It was great to talk to previous students who are now at Eden Marine, current students and members of the school community. It was a terrific day and a marvellous event. A big congratulation to the Principal of Towamba Public School, Kathryn Davis, and the organising committee for all their hard work in staging this event.

Through the hard work of Industrial Arts teacher, Jason Smith, the school has recently updated its website which is now hosted by the Department of Education and Communities (DEC). This new site is very user friendly and much easier to administer, allowing content to be added on a more regular basis. Keep a close eye on the site for school events and activities. Feedback relating to the site is also always appreciated.

The school will be re-emphasising our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience to students over the coming weeks. This will be done explicitly in the classroom but also in the context of every day school life. Some examples include responsibility to attend school, arrive on time to classes, present in school uniform and demonstrate responsibility in learning and behaviour. Respect for oneself, others and the school environment can make a clear, definite and positive impact on school culture. Resilience in seeking to understand others, appreciate and accept different viewpoints and developing the capacity learn from mistakes is critical for personal growth and development. Once again, you thoughts and feedback in the way we undertake this process is sought and greatly appreciated.

Finally, the school is reviewing aspects of school uniform. Discussions around school uniform always create interest and discussion at all levels. The frame of reference for this review is not necessarily to consider wholesale changes but to consider the strengths and areas of improvement with the current uniform and consider opportunities for the future. Some work has already been done about the possibility of a “uniform shop” operating from the school in the delivery of an accessible, high quality, cost effective uniform to the students. Developing a clear definition of what our uniform is in its various forms is also critical. Although not necessarily linked to student learning outcomes, a quality uniform worn by all students does contribute to a positive school culture and a sense of “belonging”. The P&C supports the school in exploring this review further. It is hoped that an opportunity will be created later this term in the form of a community forum to present the progress of this review and consult with the school community.Ian MooreheadPrincipal

SEMESTER 1 - AWARDS PRESENTATIONSemester I Presentation Day was held in mid-July highlighting not only Eden Marine High School’s academic excellence but showcasing the amazing musical talent of Year 12. Parents, staff and students were in awe of the aucostic performance by Kane Gardaya and Alex Sargent who played “Tamacun” by Rodrigo Y Gabriela - worth of a standing ovation. The presentation ended as beautiful as it started with Kayla Pratt singing “Never Let Me Go” by Florence and the Machine. Her heartfelt voice was beautifully accompanied by Ellie Stewart’s rare talent on the piano. Based on the quality seen on presentation day, the music students, who will be performing their major works on the 12th September, should excel with flying colours.

Marine Masterchef 2012As part of the marine studies syllabus, sourcing, documentating, and preparing a seafood meal is an assessable component.

Only one student within the Marine Studies class studies Food Technology as a senior subject. This however, did not deter from the students showcasing both skill and aptitude within the kitchen to create masterchef worthy dishes - three hats up!

Not only did the writer of this article get to see the amazing dishes the modest talented chefs created, but also had the pleasure of tasting Michael Aucote’s and Matthew Winnel’s Fish Curry, which was possibly the best dish they had ever tasted!

Mr Blair and his students would like to thank Matthew’s father, Mr Russell Winnel, who is a skipper on a local trawler. Mr Winnel has contributed over $400 worth of fish which has helped to cover the costs of ingredients for the students. With his support Mr Blair and the students thoroughly enjoyed a decadent buffet seafood lunch at school.

Well the Olympics are over but the “real” athletes at Eden Marine High School are busy preparing for the State Championships which will be held in Sydney from 6th-8th September.

The venue is the Athlete Centre, Olympic Park in Homebush. At the moment we will be represented by six individuals in their respective events and the girls relay teams in the 13’s, 14’s and 16’s. This is obviously a fantastic opportunity for the team and they are suitably excited about their chance to compete against the best that N.S.W. offers.

We wish them the best and hope their sportsmanship represents the hour they have earnt.Bob Arthur, Acting Sports Organiser

Boosting the ‘Spirit’ in SportIn a bid to bring back some of the ‘Olde House Spirit’, sport has been run differently this term. Year 7 and 8 students have been organised into groups according to their house. Staff have been allocated to a house group and are responsible for roll marking, escorting students to venues, supervision and assisting with refereeing.

Competition is a ‘round robin’ draw of four sports - soccer, touch football, pateka and netball.

Houses have two teams each and compete in seven rounds. At the end of the tournament prizes are awarded to the house with the highest point score, Most Valued Player (MVP) and achievement awards.

The teams are as follows: King Vipers, King Cobras, Imlay Iguanas, Imlay Impalas, Flinders Force, Flinders Falcons, Boyd Bullfronts, Boyd Barracudas.

Please boost patriotism with your children and make it an enjoyable experience for all. Thank you.Jane Horsnby - Sport Organiser for Year 7/8

Making Science Sexy for National Science WeekThe Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre (SCMDC) teamed up with a number of partners for a week of fun, trivia and sexy science during National Science Week last week.

With the support of the Australian National University (ANU), SCMDC welcomed guest speaker Sheree Marris back to the region for a series of presentations to local high schools amid a number of initiatives to showcase how science can be fun.

Bega High School, Lumen Christi Catholic College and Eden Marine High School students heard of the many and varied career opportunities available to anyone who studies marine sciences at university.

Ms Marris, a former Young Australian of the Year Environmental Award winner, had the students completely engaged with stories of diving with great white sharks, international travel and amazing adventures – all based on her own life as a marine scientist and environmental communicator.

A packed house attended the Discovery Centre’s Marine Mania Trivia Night on the Wednesday night at the Merimbula Wharf Restaurant and Aquarium and a similar number enjoyed a hilarious presentation by Sheree Marris on Friday night based on her book KamaSEAtra – Secrets of Sex in the Sea.

National Science Week was sewn up on Saturday with an Open Day at the Discovery Centre featuring displays by ANU, National Parks and Merimbula Aquarium. The day involved a wide range of science activities, from tsunami demonstrations to insect displays and more. The inclement weather did not stop a crowd of people calling in, with the children enjoying making slime, decorating shells and fish feeding, amongst other activities.

SCMDC Marine Education Officer Jillian Riethmuller was thrilled with the entire week, saying “making science fun is part of my background so working with colleagues and partners to showcase this event was fantastic. We were rapt with the interest from students and community members alike and will definitely conduct similar activities next year.”

Rock the Schools Big HitIf you were on Barclay Street last Tuesday you would have been quite aware there was ‘Rock’ in town. The school hall’s roof nearly lifted with the sounds of Sydney band ‘Feeding Edgar’ for the Rock the Schools program.

Students gathered at the hall for the ‘free’ lunch time concert and some even had the privilege of finding out what happens behind the scenes through five music workshops held during the day.

Year 9 students Shannon Scragg and Kalia Rogers pictured with Feeding Edgar (Pete, Jamie, Nick & Mickey) at the end of a busy day.
