From the Principal
Student Excursions
Recently we have had a number of excursions out of the
school where our students have represented Cressy with
pride while engaging in a range of learning experiences.
Congratulations to students and thank you to staff and
volunteers who have organised and participated in
activities.
Longford and Perth Visits
In recent weeks we have had the pleasure of visits to our
farm from Perth and Longford schools. Students
witnessed shearing, created plant pots, planted seeds,
participated in sheep handing and had a barbecue. Thank
you to Mr Mark Lockwood for coordinating the visits,
primary schools for bringing students and Cressy students
who assisted on the days. The days would not have been
possible without the involvement of Mr Terry Connell, Mr
Kerry Beaumont, Mr Gerard Goss, Mr Nick Goss, Mr
David Blair, Mrs Lindy Wilson, Mrs Angela Jenkins, Mrs
Dearne Baker and Mr Bob Carroll. I thank them for their
efforts. Our appreciation also goes to TP Jones who
provided bags for students to transport their plant pots
and wool home.
Tasmanian Champion Daniel Best
My congratulations go to Daniel Best who recently won
the 67kg Tasmanian Boxing League championship.
Congratulations to Daniel and best of luck to him when
he represents the state in Victoria in coming weeks.

Road Safety
On Wednesday 25 October Year 10 students attended the
RYDA Road Safety Education Program at Symmons Plains.
Students had six sessions throughout the day, including
learning about car maintenance and safety features,
investigating the likely cause of a fatal teen car crash and
hearing from a car crash victim. Students said the experience
was very beneficial and it was important to be exposed to the
possible harsh consequences of driving.

Down on the farm
The final term of the year has started with a bang. There are chickens hatching and shows to be won.
Congratulations to both the Chook Squad and the Sheep Handling team who have shown Cressy DHS at its best at the
Longford Show. Chook squad had eleven birds entered, the most this year. They won best bird in the Japanese Bantam class.
Nice work. The White Sussex roosters, Alfred and Turkey, and Mrs Barnevelder, along with a Japanese bantam pullet also
won individual classes. I was impressed at the enthusiasm of these students and their ability to work independently and
responsibly. Great parent support as well, and I thank you all for your effort and support. The students have received such
accolades from the Poultry Society and fellow poultry exhibitors that they received a request to show at Deloraine Show. An
offer that students are keen to take up. A big thankyou to Chloe Fellows, Mistie Robson, Maddison Bryant, Claire
Worthington, Georgia Shaw, William Atley and Shailey Jones.
The Sheep Handling team also had a fantastic day. A very big thankyou to Leah and Luke Shaw who started the day very early
to transport the sheep to the show ground. I was very thankful for their support throughout the day and keeping me on
track. Thanks to AJ who arrived early to help load, unload and feed, with Tyson, before most of the team arrived. Brad also
rocked in early to help with feeding.
Again the team received many comments on how well presented they were and I am really proud of how many entered the
Junior Handlers competition, where their skill of presenting and showing sheep was judged. Congratulations to Brad Graham,
Abby Dwyer and Ella Mason for reaching the finals. These students impressed the judge with their appearance (thanks Lindy
for the ironing), smiling, enjoying what they were doing and keeping an eye on the judge. A very big congratulation to Ella
Mason who took out the junior section, and received a special mention on how well she managed her sheep whilst always
keeping her eye on the judge.
This year saw a new class for exhibiting a progeny pair. We were a late entry with a lamb pair and an under 1.5yrs entry. Well
done to our handlers who responded to the last minute call. I was very proud (and Nick will be pleased) when we took
home the prize for Supreme Interbreed Sires Progeny. Both the ewe and ram shown where required to be by the same ram.
This acknowledges the hard work done by Nick Goss and Terry Connell with the school breeding program.
The success of the school breeding of Suffolk sheep was also acknowledged when a three year old ewe, with a bonza lamb at
foot, took out the prestigious Supreme Interbreed ewe in show.
Mention must also be made of past students Jessie-Lea Everest and Angelica Brazendale who kindly gave up their time to
steward for the day. I received very positive feedback about their performance and proactive actions throughout the day.
Well done girls and thankyou for your support.
Showing isn’t just about the glory of winning a ribbon. It was nice to have some parents tell me about how their child has
grown in confidence around stock and the general public, whilst developing their skills handling livestock. Some students have
had tough sheep to handle, there have been tears, not just mine. Students have learned to work with a variety of students and
should be acknowledged for their perseverance, determination and resilience.
Well done team.
On the farm, thanks goes to all those who have helped out since Nick’s injury. He has been greatly missed, and everyone’s
support has been appreciated. Several classes were involved in planting potatoes before the school holidays. We have
returned to fantastic growth of weeds, but also some very healthy looking potato plants. The weeds have been cut and
sprayed and there will be some work to ensure we have a good harvest later on.
It is exciting to see Mrs Summers’ class utilising a couple of garden beds to plant some vegetables, and rumour has it there is
even an incubator in her room with fertile eggs. Egg-citement all round.
Mr Lockwood’s Building and Construction class are concluding the building of a first class pig pen and yard. It has been tested
by some ewes on munching duty and deemed a suitable shelter.
A special thankyou to Kaytee Martin and her dad for feeding the school animals over the holiday break. Your help has been
greatly appreciated.
Project Based Agricultural Experience - Project
Pitch Event
Three students from the 9/10 Ag class bravely went where no one has gone before with the first Project Pitch Event for the Project Based Ag Experience.
This state wide competition gave students the opportunity to research or carry
out an experiment in an area of agricultural interest over a couple of terms.
On Wednesday 18 October, the students travelled to UTAS to share their projects and learning in a relaxed,
conversation style expo with judges coming from the DoE, Woman in Ag and TAPG.
Kaytee Martin’s project, Grass vs Grain, looked at feedlot production of beef compared to grass feed animals. Sera
Mason and Chloe Fellows carried out an experiment feeding two different commercially available chook feeds and
looked at the differences in egg production. Both groups encountered problems and difficulties but still learnt a
great deal in their areas. They are to be congratulated on their perseverance and the quality of their presentations.
They represented Cressy DHS very well amongst some very tough competition on the day.
Lilydale VET Ag
On the 20th October Jo Muddle spoke to the 9/10 Ag class about enrolling
in the VET Ag or Horticulture course at Lilydale through Newstead
College. She outlined the course structure and different units involved.
Lilydale grow grapes and cattle on their farm, and have recently had a new
classroom built on site.

During Term 4 the Year 7/8 SRC will be supporting our school to
deliver the Day for Daniel program.
The Day for Daniel is a National Day of Action to raise awareness of
child safety, protection and harm prevention. The program is about
educating children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety
and protection initiatives. 'Wear Red and Educate' is the theme for the day.
The objectives of Day for Daniel are:
To educate children regarding their personal safety and empower them to 'Recognise, React and Report' when they feel something is not right.
To raise awareness about child safety and protection, and to promote a safer community for children.
To educate and equip individuals and communities with knowledge and skills to understand child safety and protection requirements and empower them to take action.
To honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe.
Day for Daniel is also an opportunity for Australians to make a statement that crimes against children are not
acceptable in Australia. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation held the first Day for Daniel in November 2005.
Events have been held around the nation on October 28th.
The Year 7/8 Student representatives will be supporting classroom teachers to deliver the program during the first
part of Term 4. Which will culminate in a whole project to signify the work achieved during this time.
Parents and students can download the HELP ME APP directly onto their android or iPhone devices.

on the Tuesday the 17th of October.
At the QVM, students travelled through space
exploring the mysteries of the cosmos during an
informative show inside the planetarium and
afterwards interacted with the Phenomena Factory
exercising a variety of physics concepts. The group
were delighted as they walked a short distance in the
sunshine to the Art Gallery, where they were taken
back in time discovering the history and culture of
Indigenous Tasmanians.
Students have also been learning about multicellular
systems as part of the Science curriculum. They have
been studying the anatomy of the heart from a
theoretical perspective, as well as, a practical
dissection.
In Mathematics, students are very engaged in the
finance unit where they are learning about earning an
income, tax, superannuation and simple interest.
