Farewell Year 12: Next week marks the final days of formal schooling for our Year 12 students. After 13 years it is at its end. Graduation and final farewell events are organised. With COVID considerations, unfortunately, parents will not be able to be present at these events. However, live streaming and zoom links will be provided. The Graduation Mass is on Tuesday 22 September (two sessions) in the evening, while the Farewell Assembly is on Wednesday 23 September. An email has been sent to all Year 12 families regarding the timetable for the Year 12 End of Year celebrations 2020. We wish all of our Year 12 students the very best in their HSC and trust that they savour their last days here at Bosco!
Year 11 Exams: The Preliminary Course exams are well under way this week. Staff have indicated that our Year 11 students have been preparing well for them. The exam period continues through to next week. We wish them the very best as they embark on these important exams.
Principal Awards: Congratulations to this week's students who have received a Principal Award which recognises student effort and achievement. Due to the current situation we are unable to hold a College Assembly. Please see page 3 for an acknowledgement for the recipients.
Feast of the CrossThis week on 14 September the church celebrated the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. This feast was observed in Rome before the end of the 7th century. It commemorates the recovery of the Holy Cross, which had been placed on Mt Calvary, by St Helena and preserved in Jerusalem, but then had fallen into the hands of the King of the Persians. The precious relic was recovered and returned to Jerusalem by Emperor Heraclius in 629. It is said that Heraclius carried the Cross back to Jerusalem on his shoulders. He was clothed with costly garments and with ornaments of precious stones. But at the entrance to Mt Calvary a strange incident occurred. Try as hard as he would, he could not go forward. Zacharias, the Bishop of Jerusalem, then said to the astonished monarch: "Consider, O Emperor, that with these triumphal ornaments you are far from resembling Jesus carrying His Cross." The Emperor then put on a penitential garb and continued the journey. This reminds us of the potent symbol of the Cross to Christians. It is the heart of our Christian belief that through Christ’s death salvation is afforded to those who humbly believe.

It is a NSW Government requirement that all absences from school are explained by the student's parents/carers. The easiest way to do this is to log onto the Compass Parent Portal to explain any lateness or absence with an Attendance Note. Instructions on how to do this are listed here:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

7 TERM 3 - WEEK 9 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life
Year 7 students have been learning about forces and ways to prevent injury from forces in our everyday life. So this week they put their knowledge to the test by designing and developing a protective shield for an egg, to simulate how a helmet protects us from head injuries. Their challenge was to ensure their egg did not crack after falling from the TAS block, using two material types from a list including bubble wrap, polystyrene balls, cardboard, newspaper and/or wool. Some students came up with parcels that looked like an alien spacecraft, and others used parachutes to slow down the fall. Regardless of whether their design was effective or not, I think most students would agree it was a most eggcellent prac!

EXERCISES TO HELP STRENGTHEN PEN GRIP
Literacy and Numeracy | Mrs Peta Batty
It is important for students to be able to write comfortably for a considerable length of time. If you want to build skill, dexterity, and strength, try these simple at-home exercises:
• Use a spray bottle
• Use child-safe scissors to cut construction paper or fabric
• Pick up small objects with tongs or clothespins
• Paint on vertical or horizontal surfaces
• Tear paper into small pieces to make mosaics
• Play with modelling clay.
VET - Construction | Mr Mark Peterson
Thank you to Year 11 Construction continuing the building of the pathway to the oval.
The students worked really well as a group! They're starting to show skills that are required out on a construction site. Excellent motivation was shown as they asked what jobs could be done while waiting, listened to instructions, volunteered themselves to do tasks when I asked if somebody could do it, and concentrated on the project until it was completed.
The job turned out to be fantastic! You made the day/task easy!
Thanks to Mr Katalinic for his help making it a 'smooth' process.

TAS Textiles and Technology | Mrs Nita Panagio
This term Year 9 Textiles students have been designing and constructing their skirts. Students have learnt about using a pattern, cutting out fabric, creating seams and using the overlocker. Students had to select a fashion designer who they were inspired by and conduct a study on them.
Students were happy to return to face to face learning and have created wonderful skirt products. Below are some photos of students engaged in learning.
‘This semester, I learned the techniques and skills to produce a well-constructed skirt. I understood the design brief by incorporating a creative hemline. My creative hemline was a ruffle shorter at the front and longer at the back of the garment with a gradual interconnecting side. Many components of my skirt's design worked great including the hemline, and the addition of the gold trim along the seam line. I enjoyed the unit along with all the challenges and look forward to expanding my skills to improve my work in the future.’ Sienna Marino

During the holidays, the spandrel (triangular space)
underneath the main TAS stairway was enclosed for
storage purposes. This is a fantastic addition to the
building which will be used to store student projects
and timber.
The TAS Department would like to further enhance
the facade of the storage area. Therefore, a
competition has been organised to design an
artwork for the walls. The artwork must relate to
technology, design, innovation and the values of St
John Bosco. These components of the artwork can
be split across the two walls. The artwork should
complement the adjoining buildings. The winning
design/s will be converted into a digital canvas and
printed onto a vinyl wrap for the walls.
