After the Summer Holidays everyone was happy to see each other. The students settled back really back into their routines. The weather is still good so we are making the most of it spending time outside, in the garden, going for nice walks, in the playground. Activities like rebounders and music are two of the favourite activities to our students but we cannot forget bikes, where they really enjoy themselves. When we are indoors we tend to do all kinds of art and crafts, letting their imagination flow. Singing and signing is something that they all love to do specially before bed. The students that do extended day and overnight always join in and have a great time. They all get on very well with each other. We are looking forward to doing more and more fun activities. Welcome back everyone.

We are really making the most of the last of the lovely weather we are experiencing at the moment. As you are aware we have extensive grounds which have a variety of flora and fauna; this has allowed us to look at the changing seasons and observe the world around us as it changes from Summer to Autumn and then into Winter. There has been lots of conker collecting, apples and blackberry harvesting and we have started looking at ways to cook and preserve these items. So don’t be at all surprised if your daughters ask you to cook some apples and put seasoning on them!!

The students have taken part in House Meetings and have made contributions towards ideas for activities such as Dance Club, which is now being held once a week on a Wednesday evening. They have also agreed to take on responsibilities for a few house hold chores such as collecting laundry, food preparation, menu planning and have also asked to have a movie night where each student has an opportunity to choose the movie. Our house bathroom areas have nearly all been refurbished and are so different to the old ones. They are all separate and the girls have been able to allocate which area they prefer and store all their toiletries in their own cupboards and drawers.

There have been some house changes this academic year, with Albert, Jamie, Max and William moving up to Sherwood house and Victor starting at Parkwood and joining the students on Sherwood house. Part of Sherwood house continues to be the independent unit with the students doing their own laundry and cooking. They continue, with staff support, to plan their own menus and then write the shopping list and shop for these on a weekly basis. Now the students have settled into their routines on house we will start working with them again on their individual targets as well as working with them to achieve some more Open College Network units. George started at a dance school at the end of last year, taking part in their end of year show, he has returned again this year and goes to his dance class every Tuesday evening in Swanley.

After School Activities

After School Activities – with the nights drawing in Archery will restart after the half term on Tuesdays with a trained Archery coach coming in to support our students to hit the target. Email [email protected] if you want to know more about any of the activities on offer or to sign up.

This term, Chestnut are focusing on household shopping as our topic for OCN. We have been focusing on the different types of shops that are available and what can be bought in them. on our recent community learning trip we spent time categorising the different shops we saw. Several members of Chestnut are active members of steel band and have been really working hard to sharpen their skills in this area for upcoming performances. Some members of the class are also in rehearsals for the upcoming drama production, for which they attended a workshop. It has been a busy and enjoyable start to the term.

Welcome to Alder class. We have been very busy settling in with a few changes along the way. We are exploring light and dark as the theme for this term, with the use of the sensory room and our favourite book Night Light. We are hoping Olivia the class owl will be visiting some of the students homes to learn about night time routines. We enjoy a fortnightly swim where we splash about a lot! We also go into the community once a fortnight to visit places that we choose of interest. So far we have been to several parks including Five Arches where we enjoyed feeding the ducks. We are very physical during the week with lots of OT input with the use of sensory diets and sensory circuit. Imogen also works with us on food exploring which is a big hit for us all as we get to explore and try different foods including cereals, pasta and snacks using our different senses. We look forward to lots of exploring of different light sources and with firework night and Christmas upon us we will have plenty to explore………..

Maple class have welcomed a new student into the class this term and also some new TAs. We are pleased to say that everyone has settled in well. Maple are continuing to enjoy swimming and making trips out into the community.

We have been introduced to Forest School by Ngan and we are enjoying being outside and taking part in new activities. The camp fire is lovely and Maple are welcoming the opportunity to have lunch around the fire.

All the staff and students have now settled into our new classroom and are now at the stage where the summer holidays are a distant memory and Autumn is now upon us. The students are really working hard on all tasks that have been set. Our two main projects are based upon Household Shopping in the local community and Recycling. This will involve working with money, going to the local shops (walking and public transport), identifying essential household items and working out what can and cannot be recycled. As the students are now part of the 6th Form they will also have the opportunity to experience a more vocational curriculum. This will include Gardening, Cooking, Hair and Beauty and Construction. Obviously these will be adapted to suit the abilities of our students but will also present new challenges. For example, they have had a nail painting session which also improved their fine motor skills and co-ordination. The results were very impressive and Louise (TA) was still wearing hers (done by one of the students) a week later! We also welcomed Annette to our team. She is an experienced TA who has worked in other similar schools. She has fitted in very well and all students have warmed to her. Finally, we do have a really busy timetable and it will continue to evolve. PE will be every Friday afternoon and I am hoping that after Christmas this will involve greater use of community based facilities. Our two oldest students also attend Bromley Mencap Lodge every Monday where the vocational education is intensified. This could even extend to short periods of work experience in the Summer term. Any questions on the above please contact Derek Swan at school.

We have had a very busy time in class, getting to know each other and exploring our new classroom and outside area. We have enjoyed many activities including working on our topic storytelling where we have been reading ‘The Enormous Crocodile’. The students have been working really hard on learning the story, creating wanted posters for the crocodile and designing a different meal for him. We have also been working on a display to show all the work we have been doing about The Enormous Crocodile. Every other week we go shopping to buy the ingredients for our cooking lessons where we have made fruit skewers and scones. In class we have been working very hard on our phonic sounds, telling the time and individual numeracy targets. We have many more fun activities planned for this term and will be looking at the next stories ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘The Stickman’.

We have had a very busy start to the year in Birch class, learning lots of new skills and having lessons with a range of teachers. As well as doing literacy, numeracy, OCN and independence with Nicole, students are doing catering with Dawn, gardening and pampering with Karen and construction with David! Harvey is attending The Lodge college on a Monday and Enitan and Taiwo are attending Tonbridge college on a Thursday. We've also managed to do our class assembly already - all about our birthdays and what happened on them in history - and they all performed beautifully. Here are some of the comments from Birch class about our year so far: Nathan - We did hand massage with Karen. I did a massage on Will in the class. We have been learning about worms. We pulled them out of the holes and made a wormery. Charlie - I have been learning about fire extinguishers. I had a hand massage with Enitan. Enitan - We have been learning about worms. We went to Poundland to buy honey. I cooked pancakes; first I put flour in the bowl and milk and egg. Zoe - Birthday. I built a worm house. I chose egg and cress sandwiches for cooking with Dawn. Taiwo - I went to college on Thursday. We made pancakes with Dawn. Will - I went to Steel Band with Nathan. We went to Poundland and saw books and earrings. We did measuring and reading - we measured my muscles, arm and finger. Max - We went to McDonalds. We measured our chests. We went shopping in Poundland. Harvey - we walked to the shop. We had a drink. At college I pushed the wheelbarrow. As you can see, the worms were very popular! We are working on the OCN unit Household Shopping this term and will be practising our shopping skills on a regular basis, both in supermarkets and local shops.

Our new double room and its central location next to a kitchen and toilets is very convenient, and has helped the class to get used to their new group, staff and ways of working. Our main focus so far has been the basics of reading, writing and number, using phonics where it works and also the hugely fun technique of story mapping. This involves acting out stories, or anything we write, with gestures and drawings that students can easily memorize, providing a stepping stone to better sentences. Students are finding it easy to succeed in this approach, and so confidence is building around knowing what to write without so much support. We have begun swimming and trips out, which fit in well with our OCN unit of shopping. We also went to the library and joined so students borrowed some books to read at storytime. We have also followed recipes to make bread and carrot cake, cooking being another favorite activity

We are very happy to be back to school after the summer holidays. We will have a very exciting term in Elm class. Elm class will continue to very busy with lots different therapies, sensory activities and our weekly Tacpac sessions. We have been working on spelling our names, counting up to 10 and mark making. We are enjoying our swimming sessions and our community visit; we will be working on exchanging money for a drink. This term we are working really hard on communication skills. We are enjoying going to weekly music and dance sessions where we are having lots of fun and we will continue to join elements of performing arts leading up to the Christmas performance.

I have enjoyed our walks in the woods because, it is good for your legs and makes me feel happy, I also like steel band (Ann) I like riding bikes because it is fun and it keeps you fit and healthy. (Luisa) I like doing maths on the computer especially time and money games. (Leo) I have loved playing in the woods by Forest School. We have played 40 40 it was good fun.( Owen) I have enjoyed going running with Stuart and Ivy it is great fun and good exercise. (Karoo) I like playing maths games with money because I really like learning new skills. (Skye) I like Mrs Mc Gill because she is funny and she makes me laugh a lot when I am sad. (Kayden) I like going on the trampoline as I can jump really high. I like steel band and trying new things. (Ivy) This is just some of the comments made by the New Banyan class. We are following the topic of traditional stories and the class have written their own version, very interesting interpretations. We are also working on time lines and life skills concerning money.

Welcome to the new term and the new Bamboo class. The students are settling in to their new classroom environment and getting to know each other; some friendships are beginning to form already! The staff in Bamboo class supporting the students are: Miss Parker, Peace, Amy and Robyn. This term’s topic is ‘Traditional Tales’. We will be focusing on a different story every couple of weeks so we can fully immerse ourselves in the story; we will be completing a number of activities related to the student’s individual targets. We have started with Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett; we have taken Sonny the Meerkat on our own adventure and started to create our own stories! We have a new Speech and Language Therapist (SALT), Imogen. She will work with the students in small groups and on their individual targets. We also have the support of Emma (SALT assistant), who will be supporting the class staff during our social skills sessions; all the students know Emma and enjoy working with her! Some of the students from Bamboo class are going to be performing at the ‘Shakespeare for Schools’ this term. They have started rehearsals and we are very excited to see them perform at the Orchard Theatre on the 29th October. Every single student in Bamboo is accessing some form of additional music lesson throughout the week; they are all really enjoying these sessions. The SALT team have started a Signing choir and a few of the Bamboo students are involved in this too! We are looking forward to a fun filled term ahead!

The Gatehouse Class enters its second year. At the end of last academic year we said goodbye to 6 students with 10 continuing into a second year. They have been joined by 7 new students taking the class to 17. As with last year the class is split into 3 teams and rotate round our vocational areas of Catering, Construction, Hair and Beauty and Horticulture. All have settled into the new year with enthusiasm and gusto. This year the Gatehouse class have been joined by Acorn and Birch classes to form The 6th Form. It is our intention to run the 6th Form differently, with them having their own assembly, more responsibility around school and more ‘options’ opportunities. This will also involve a wider range of OCN units that, in particular, Gatehouse students can study. This means we can tailor qualifications to individual students’ needs and interests ready for life after Parkwood Hall. Work has continued on finishing The Gatehouse (training room, kitchen and the store/changing room) and then the grounds. The salon is being used for teaching purposes. It is hoped that over the coming months we can really start using The Gatehouse and start inviting groups of people in to experience our Tearoom. Our new students are in the process of redecorating the main corridor outside ‘The Hub’, which was decorated by last years’ students, tying it into The Gatehouse design and giving them ownership of the project. We then intend to use this area as a ‘Gallery’ showcasing some of the art based projects we are going to run. The first being based around Andy Warhol. It promises to be a creative and productive year with lots of hard, rewarding work by ALL and we look forward to you all seeing the students efforts.

We are all settling in to our new class and getting to know each other! Our theme this term is ‘Tell a Story’ and we are using The Bad-tempered Ladybird which gives the students the opportunity to sequence, tell the time, learn about different animals and they will eventually tell the story in their own words. We will hopefully encourage the students to make up their own story to tell us too. We have enjoyed working outdoors in the small forest school and our first activity was to make bird feeders using pine cones, lard and bird seed. Messy, but great fun!

While the weather is still quite good, we are spending as much time outdoors as possible and soon, we will be weeding and preparing raised planters for some winter plants. After half term, the Christmas activities will swing into motion and the next time we write, it will be all glitter and gold!! Linda, Vince, Gwen, Louise, Tina and Juliet

This has been a very successful start to our term, and all students have settled into their new class. This term our topic is dark and light, and we have already used this for art, and other creative lessons. Students are working hard in completing their work and enjoying fun activities to facilitate their learning. The students have recently been introduced to Attention Autism and they are thoroughly enjoying this sessions. Overall, a very good start to the academic year, and we look forward to seeing the progress students make in Juniper class throughout the academic year.

We have had a really lovely start to the school year, the students have all really enjoyed the Forest School sessions on a Tuesday morning, especially the cooking on the fire. It gives them a really good opportunity to do creative learning in the outdoor environment.

Our topic for this term is looking at traditional stories, we have been able to include lots of areas of learning including time, measuring and sentence structure. As a tool for communication and emergent writing we have begun to use ‘talk for writing’ to support the students. I am pleased to say that it has had an amazing effect on the students ability to explore, retain and convey what they have to say. I look forward to meeting you again at the upcoming joint review meetings and the

Christmas fair which I am sure will come around a lot quicker than we all expect. Andrew, Becky, Ellie & Josh.

Occupational Therapy Hello everyone. It’s the beginning of another school year and the autumn is setting in nicely now. The Occupational Therapy department is now pleased to have Chike with us, a 3rd year Occupational Therapy Student from Canterbury Christ Church University. Chike is not only learning about the whole school approach delivered by the OT team, but he is also working with some classes and students. Our ‘Parkwood Makers’ groups have started in some classes. Students are enjoying developing their fine motor skills through craft. We are working on developing in-hand manipulation skills. Successful participation in childhood occupation relies on dextrous hand use. In-hand manipulation is the term used to describe the ability to move a small object around within a single hand. It is an essential component of the development of fine motor control. The fingers and thumb are used to best position the object for the activity. For example, positioning a pencil for writing, adjusting the paper when cutting with scissors; doing up buttons; tying shoe laces and using a knife and fork. In-hand manipulation is one of the most complex fine motor skills. Children who have difficulty with in-hand manipulation may be slow or unable to complete some everyday activities. As every year, Occupational Therapy Week is approaching and we would like to celebrate it with you! Occupational Therapy Week is a yearly celebration of the occupational therapy profession. It is an opportunity for occupational therapists to be loud and proud; and also encourage other people who have benefited from occupational therapy to tell the difference it has made in their lives. Come along on Friday the 9th November from 9.30-11.30 am. Please, contact us for more information. The OT team

Willow class 2017-18 enjoyed the final half term of the year and it was sad to say goodbye after teaching the students for the past 2-3 years. However they are all getting on well in their new classes and it is great to see them being more independent around school. Willow 2018-19 have started off at full speed! We have already made good progress towards our first OCN unit ‘Household Shopping’ and will be going out to purchase items later in the term. We will also visit some furniture stores as we are imagining what it is like to move into our own home. We enjoy being active and so far have used the bikes, trampoline and had our first session at White Oak. Football is a definite favourite and we have a session with Stuart to improve our football skills. Many of the students will also be part of the football team attending tournaments this year.

Steel Band The steel band have been practising hard and it has been great showing new students how to play the pans and what the routines are for the percussion. Oliver This summer’s show of Oliver was a great success with polished performances from the students and great support from our technical team. The DVD should be available soon to purchase. Dance We are pleased to welcome Paul back with us for Step into Dance sessions this year. Makaton Choir A small group of students with the help of the SALT team have started a Makaton Choir. This project will go towards some of the students leadership section of their Arts Award. We are singing some well known popular songs and learning the signs for them. Accreditation We were really pleased that all the students that were entered for Bronze or Silver Arts Award im-pressed the moderator and passed, and that we had our older students achieving OCN modules in Exploring Performance, Exploring Dance and Exploring Music. Shakespeare School Festival Our rehearsals are well under way for A Midsummer Nights Dream, which we will perform at the Orchard Theatre on October 29th. We have had our cast workshop at the Orchard Theatre and worked hard on projecting our voices.

Nurse Welcome to another year at Parkwood, and now the nights are drawing in and it is definitely a bit chilly when I get up in the mornings the lovely summer we had is fading in to a distant memory. Even when there is a chill in the air wrapping up and getting outside for some exercise is still good for you. Any exercise will do, a brisk walk in the park, swimming, riding your bike, jumping on the trampoline in the garden. Just get out there and release those happy hormones and keep a smile on your face. Being active also helps to boost our immune systems, good for our vitamin D levels. As the season of coughs and sneezes and the flu start to raise their ugly head again, I have a request. If you think your child is unwell and has a temperature please do not send them in to school, as the flu virus can spread very quickly to both students and staff alike. If you have not already been contacted by your G.P. about your child and the flu vaccination I would speak to them. The West Kent immunisation team have already been in contact with me and are coming in on Thursday 15th November to immunise the students in years 1-5, and you will be contacted if your child falls in to this age range. If your child is older it is free to anyone they consider vulnerable both young and old and your G.P. should be arranging sessions during the next few months. Immunisation against the flu virus will help stop it spreading so it is worth considering speaking to your G.P. You may also pay for the vaccine and chemists and supermarkets do offer this service. The norovirus is also bound to put in appearance during the winter months so please remember that if your child is sick they have to away from school for 24hrs after the sickness has stopped and if they have diarrhoea this needs to be extended to 48hours. By keeping to this rule we will hopefully prevent this virus from spreading. Encouraging good hand hygiene by washing your hands with soap and water after visiting the toilet and before eating is also a really good way of preventing the bugs spreading. I am really looking forward to continuing with the P.S.H.E. lessons and also the Heart Start programme which teaches young people basic first aid. We have had great success last year with this and the students seem to really enjoy the lessons. If your child is having any health issues, remember I am here, and you can always give me a ring during the school day. I would also appreciate it if could let me know of any changes that have occurred from any hospital appointments your child may have, (a copy of the hospital follow up letter would be very helpful). This is so I have up to date information regarding any medication or other changes that have occurred. Finally a gentle reminder that any medication sent in to school must be in the original box with the pharmacy label clearly visible, and please do not send in medication with another persons name on it, as I am not able to administer this medication .This could result in delaying the treatment your child requires.

Sports afternoon was once again a great success with students demonstrating various physical skills and working together as a team to complete the activities. Thank you to all who came to support. This term sees the start of the South London Special League football and the Panathlon football heats. Students will also take part in regular physical activity here at school and at White Oak Leisure Centre.

SALT Hello from Maggie, Emma, Jenny, Imogen, Melody, and Tina. We are very pleased welcome our new Speech and Language Therapist, Imogen Ford, who joined us in June. You will have received your young people’s new targets from us at the end of the summer term. Currently we are busy working in the new classes with the students in groups and individually, supporting them with their targets. We will also be running training sessions within each of the classes before Christmas to allow us to target training around the specific needs of the students in that classroom. Emma is really busy working her magic, producing lots of exciting visual resources for classes. We have started a Makaton Choir with some of the students in an enrichment session. This is supporting one of our older student’s Arts award project, and she is helping to organise it with her peers. We hope to roll this out more widely later in the school year. Myself and Leah Dawson hope to organise another parent Makaton training session before Christmas. Please put a note in your young person’s contact book to let us know if you would be interested. We will send a text when we have a date organised. As always if you wish to speak to any member of the team please feel free to contact us at the school.

As most of you will know, Clare Hollick has been appointed as Deputy Student Liaison & Inclusion Manager, and she will be setting up and running some specific workshops for parents. We have decided to trial these for a couple of terms to see whether we need these and the Parents' Forums so have not set any dates for Parents' Forums at this stage. Parents can still ask to meet with Chris Prisk and Chris Allan for a surgery and if anyone has a view regarding the Parents' Forums and their continuation, please let Chris Prisk or Chris Allan know.

If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason or you need to collect them early for medical appointments, please make sure you let the school know, either in advance by using their contact book or by phoning the school office. Please also let the school know, as well as transport, if your child will need to go home on school transport rather than staying for community activities. Thank you

Gentle reminder…….

When sending money into school, please remember: Put money into an envelope marked clearly with the student’s name Write on each envelope what the money is for, e.g. class, house, trip, etc Please send money for different purposes/activities in separate envelopes Only send cash for class or house pocket money (this money belongs to the stu-

dent—not the school!)

Cheques can be sent for trips, etc (if stated on the letter). Please make cheques payable to Parkwood Hall

Your assistance with this is very much appreciated.
