someone.” I am so grateful for those who have helped me, Susan Morris who inspiredandencouragedmeonmyjourneytocertification,Ernie Nunes who has been a constant support as I learn how to be an editor, and Linda Berry who modelled the compassionate leadership I strive to emulate as a nurse manager. These are only a few of the many individuals who have helped me throughout my career. Some have intentionally set out to help and mold me, others have led by example, and all are appreciated.

Nobody makes it through life without the help of mentors, teachers, leaders, and coaches. Our debt to them is paid by helping another, by opening our hearts and minds to others beginning their journeys. Perhaps you do this by accepting a new nurse, precepting and encouraging them astheylearnandgrow.Maybeyouwillsupportacolleaguepursuingadegreeorcertification.Maybe you don’t know how you can help.

ASPAN Region 1 Director’s Update—A New Year: Anticipation and Reflection

By Regina Hoefner-Notz MS, RN, CPAN, CPN ASPAN Region 1 Director

It’s hard to believe, another National Conference has come and gone. So much preparation, learning, and of course, socializing. It was wonderful to see so many Region 1 members enjoying this amazing experience.

For those of you lucky enough to attend, I hope you took home new knowledge and great memories. Share your new information with peers

and encourage others to do the same. If you weren’t able to attend, I hope you will consider Indianapolis in 2017.

There are many things I love about conferences. The most important formeistheopportunitytobe“filledup”again.Ourdaysarelongandwe are a caring profession. We care for patients, families, older nurses, younger nurses, student nurses, and peers. Then, we go home and care for partners, children, parents, and friends. It’s easy to see our buckets continuallybeingemptiedwithlittletimeforrefilling.

Conferencefillsme.ItremindsmewhyIloveperianesthesianursing.Be reflective, think of the one major reason you entered our sacred profession. If it’s taking a few minutes to pinpoint this reason, you need yourbucketrefilled.

We had so many opportunities to do this at conference. Our Immediate Past President, Armi Holcombinspiredustofindpassioninour practice. Our new President, Katrina Bickerstaff, encouraged us to reach across all generations to discover the gifts we all have to share. Our newly revised strategic plan extends out to grow our professional organization, but it will require everyone’s participation to share this vision and actualize its message. Beyond all the amazing lectures on physiology, best practices and new processes, we were inspired to be better nurses, take better care of ourselves, and to recognize the super herowithin.Ifeelfilled.

Join us in Indianapolis next year. Go online this summer to apply for a scholarship to support making this a reality. But in the meantime, join in, share your gifts and reach your potential in PANAC and your local chapter. We need everyone.

CPAN, Why Bother?By Denise Oxford, RN, BSN, CPAN

This is the question many of us, either silently or openly, ask ourselves and others. For me, I needed to know why I wanted to take this journey. Vanity? Hey, it looks kind of cool having extra letters after your name, but vanity alone was not enough to motivate me. Pride? Nah, too much like vanity and just not enough. Curiosity? Hmmm… getting closer. I did want to know if I could accomplish this goal. Camaraderie? Yes, I think being apartofsomethingsignificantappealedtome.Ibelieveitfinallycamedown to security tempered with a bit of risk. I wanted to feel secure and confidentthatIwasprovidingthebestcarethatIcouldtomypatients.

Nopieceofpaper, nomatterhowfancy, canprovidethatconfidence. The only route to gain the knowledge needed is hard work and much study. A disciplined, organized approach is what worked for me. I also had thegreat advantageof adedicatedcoach/cheerleader.Also,beinga team player by participating in a study group kept me accountable. I know some nurses reached this goal on their own and I tip my hat to thembecausethisseemsmuchmoredifficulttome.

As it turns out, the end really does justify the means and vice versa. I not onlyobtainedacertification, butmostimportantly, that requisite knowledge I craved. At the end of the exam, after anexcruciatingfiveminutes,IsawthatI had passed. I cried. Of course not sad tears, and not really even joyful. I felt immense relief and gratitude. I tested onthefirstdateavailable, whichwasApril 4, on April 11, I was privileged to attendtheCertifiedNursesLuncheonat the ASPAN National Conference in Philadelphia, and it was delightful! To be counted among these expert nurses was both humbling and immensely gratifying. Yep, this was a worthwhile endeavor, indeed.

Congratulations to my study buddies, Susan Metz, CAPA, Virginia Turner, CPAN, CAPA, Patti Lyons, CPAN, and Micki Jones, CPAN.

Time for a new challenge… CAPA! Will you join me?

Director’s CornerPASS Phone Interview Project: The Road to Success- Frontline Nurses

Team Together to Drive Success.St Joseph's Hospital: Heather Gilbert, MSN, RN, CNOR; Kathy Dureault, MSN, RN, CPAN

Summary By Kathy Dureault, MSN, RN, CPAN

Af ter a s t a f f r e d u c t i o n a n d a new EMR, the Pre-Admission for Surgical Services department (PASS) experienced a drop in completion of p r e - a d m i s s i o n patient interviews from 80% to an all-time low of 20%. L eader sh ip and frontline staff came together agreeing on a goal to regain the 80% level, and maintain or improve quality and safety.

With limited resources and long way to go to reach our goal, it was decided all changes had to focus on improvement items with team driven results. We would invest our efforts only on things in our circle of control. Opportunities identified included staffing, internal collaboration, andinternal processes.Gapanalysisidentifiedseveralthings:

1. Additional staff were needed to support the new EMR.2. Nurses were only trained to interview either inpatients or

outpatientscreatinginefficiencies.3. Roles, responsibilities and expectations of Pre-Op and PASS were

unclear due to the new EMR .Next the team implemented improvements to reach our goal.

1. The PASS Manager’s proposal for additional staff was approved. Frontline RNs were trained and participated in interviewing, candidate selection & onboarding.

2. In addition, all current RNs were cross trained to interview BOTH inpatients and outpatients.

3. By bringing together staff from PASS, Outpatient Pre-Op and InpatientPre-Op, responsibilities, definitionsandexpectationswere agreed upon and new communication tools built.

Although the team was moving in the right direction, the interviews plateaued short of 80%. The engaged team took another critical look, findingwaste in the interview process. Layers and layers of patientinstructions had been added over time resulting in an additional 20 minutes added to the interview. The interviews were now 45 minutes long and patients had poor retention of important information.

With our guiding principles of quality and safety, we rebuilt from the ground up. The new interview process has no waste or redundancies and includes only value-added instructions and HCAHPS verbiage. The result was a redesigned patient education script of 5 minutes, a decrease in interview time from 45 minutes to 30 minutes, and interview capture to OVER 80% for the past 8 of 9 months.

This project captured the importance of frontline staff engagement and process ownership to ensure success.

BRN Speaks Out on Social Media

By Ernestine Nunes, RN

In their 2015 BRN Winter Report, the California Board of Registered Nurses warned nurses of potential HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) violations related to use of Social Media stating, “Disclosing Patient information on Internet Social Media is a Violation of the NPA (Nurse Practice Act).” Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and internet media are part of our culture. The American Nurses Association (ANA) website offers tips and principles for nurses to avoid violating patient privacy. Not showing patient’s face is not the only identifying criteria. Views insideanoperatingroom, apatient’sroom, identifiabletime, place,or patient information may put nurses at risk. Employers, public, families and friends, all have access to these seemingly mundane tweets and posts that once out there can jeopardize public trust, individual license and livelihood.In1994,aNewYorkEmergencyRoomnursewasfiredforpostinga picture of an empty cluttered trauma room with the hash tag, “Man vs. Train”after a man treated from a subway accident was transferred.HIPAA regulations are enforced in healthcare with costly penalties; fornursesitcanalsomeanpossibleBRNdisciplinaryaction, finestoa maximum of $2,500, civil or criminal penalties, law suits, and loss of employment. For more information, the BRN Report suggested the National Council of State Boards of Nursing publication, White Paper: A Nurse’s Guide to the Use of Social Media atwww.ncsbn.org.
