Newsletter of The Church of the Holy Trinity
March 2019
Reaching up to God; Reaching out with Christ’s love to the world.
Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds and hearts of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
During the next year and a half, you will hear this prayer in every service at
the Prayers of the People. We are entering a time of transition and our prayers
are just ridiculously and seriously important, to be completely frank about that.
Prayers are what open our hearts and minds to God’s word in our lives. Prayers
are what make space for God to enter us and change our world and even our
personal day to day reality. Prayers help us to see change as a blessing, not a
curse, and to welcome God’s grace in a new form into our lives. Prayers focus
us, ground us, enliven us and remind us that we are always God’s beloved and
chosen ones.
Many people scoff at change, saying things such as “I like things just the way
they are.” Or my favorite “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” We picture change as
dragging someone who has dug in their heels, reluctant and even resistant. We
even say quite plainly we just don’t like change. Yet we know change is where
blessings are most readily apparent, change brings us into new life and new
hope. If we hadn’t opened our hearts to another, we wouldn’t know that love.
If we hadn’t said yes to a particular job, we wouldn’t be happily involved in a
career or way of life. If we hadn’t been caught in a difficult situation, be it
personal, medical or communal, we would never be where we are now.
Blessings can only come when we let ourselves be open to change, and then
hold on tight, you’re in for a ride that will take you to marvelous places. As
Dr. Seuss said “Oh the places you’ll go!”
So I urge you all to open your hearts and to pray daily for this church and for
the work of your vestry and the not-yet-formed search committee. Let God
rule our hearts and minds in this important work, and let us go forth knowing
that God is working in us and for our good and that we are blessed in all of
this. Peace and prayers, Rev. Susanna

A Special Presentation by Nancy Stara On Sunday, March 10th at 9:15 Nancy Stara will lead our adult forum exploring
the beautiful stained glass windows of Holy Trinity. Done by a local artist (at
the time), Professor David Seyler, the windows incorporate our faith story in an
explosion of brilliantly colored glass through design and through symbol. Join us in the sanctuary for this
presentation. For this adult forum we ask that coffee and donuts be left in the parish hall or foyer.

Special Lent Supper Series: Won’t You Be My Neighbor? The Story and Faith of Fred Rogers Starts Wednesday, March 13th @ 6pm Parish Hall
(Following the Lent Midweek Eucharist)
One of the hot issues these days is who is our neighbor. Oh sure, we can look at
maps, or the houses next door, but who is our neighbor? The story of the Good
Samaritan is focused on just this question. Fred Rogers used this idea to open up the
world to lots of people, especially children. An ordained Presbyterian minister,
Rogers found his true call with the children of the world, and he pursued that for the duration of his life. His
show and his witness changed the worlds of many, many children and continues to reverberate in our world.
This Lent we will have a special program focusing on Fred Rogers and his spiritual wisdom. We will begin our
journey by watching the wonderful movie of his life, Won’t You Be My Neighbor, over two sessions. (It’s just
over 90 minutes long.) Kleenex will be provided! The following sessions we will explore some of his
spirituality using the book, The Spiritual Faith of Mr. Rogers by Amy Hollingsworth. Because of the time slot,
it would be terrific if we could have a simple dinner together as we explore Mr. Roger’s neighborhood. A
dinner sign-up sheet will be available in the foyer after the Last Sunday of Epiphany. Rev. Susanna will cover
the first one!
Lent Adult Forum:
The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss
Starts Sunday March 17th
9:15 am in the Parish Hall
During the season of Lent, the adult education time will
be spent with the classic children’s book author, Dr.
Seuss. Each week we will explore a book, reading it first
(or at least part of it) and finding the message of hope and love and spirituality. Yertle the Turtle, The Sneetches
and even Horton the Who will make appearances in our list of main characters. The book will be announced the
week before so if you want to read it on your own, you will have time to do so.

Change is coming! An Update from your Vestry and Wardens
On Tuesday, February 26th your Vestry met with the Bishop and Canon Easton to begin the search process for
our new Rector. It was stressed to us that our search will be rooted in prayer and communication. We will be
providing you updates as the process continues and please know each member of this congregation will have a
part of this search. An 18 month timeline of the search was presented, which includes a time for planning, a time
for searching, and a time for choosing. Your continued prayers for the Vestry and Search Committee and for the
whole parish are requested and appreciated. Sue Everett, Senior Warden
Cursillo: A short course in God’s Love LENT is here and our busy lives include some new activities-new thoughts-
new prayers. This is a wonderful time for each of us. God speaks to each
one in many special ways and through many people and places.
New information for the planning of Cursillo #27 is that this activity will be held in 2020-Thursday, May 28-
Sunday May 31, 2020. That seems distant-but you know the saying “how time flies”. What a wonderful opportunity
for you to PLAN AHEAD in your Christian journey. Maybe you wish to include a family member, a friend or
someone from your circle of supporting persons to share this experience with you. Please prayerfully share this
time to find out more about Cursillo. Talk to your priest or persons who have attended a Cursillo-become a
Cursillistas.
Praise for the Beauty of Living The body is like a piano
and happiness is like music. --Beecher
You must stop sometimes, and listen, for somewhere in the magic of you
a music bursts forth, nameless, like music of warbler, canary,
cooing of dove, music common as that of a dandelion swaying
in wind, praise ringing out for the sheer beauty of living, a heavenly flower inside you,
abloom. And listen, you must, for as long as it lasts.

LENT RESOURCES
FOR YOUR PERSONAL DEVOTIONS
Lent Madness 2019 The Saintly Smackdown is back!
Just when you thought Lent couldn’t possibly become even more penitential, have we got an online hair shirt for
you! For the tenth year running, people of faith are filling out saintly brackets and gearing up for the 2019 “saintly
smackdown.”
With its unique blend of competition, learning, and humor, Lent Madness allows participants to be inspired by
the ways in which God has worked through the lives of saintly souls across generations and cultures. Throughout
Lent, thirty-two saints will do battle to win the coveted Golden Halo. Based loosely on the NCAA basketball
tournament of a similar name, this online devotion pits saints against one another in a bracket as voters choose
their favorites throughout this penitential season.
Here’s how to participate: on the weekdays of Lent, information is posted at www.lentmadness.org about two
different saints. Each pairing remains open for 24 hours as participants read about and then vote to determine
which saint moves on to the next round. Sixteen saints make it to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance
to the Round of the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is
awarded the coveted Golden Halo.
The first round consists of basic biographical information about each of the 32 saints. Things get a bit more
interesting in the subsequent rounds as we offer quotes and quirks, explore legends, and even move into the area
of saintly kitsch. This year, Lent Madness features an intriguing slate of saints ancient and modern, Biblical and
ecclesiastical. 2019 heavyweights include Ignatius of Loyola, Nicodemus, Margaret of Cortona, John
Chrysostom, and Nicholas of Myra (aka St. Nick). The competition kicks off on “Ash Thursday,” March 7, with
an epic battle between Biblical saints Mary and Martha.
Ten “celebrity bloggers” from across the country have been tapped to write for the project: the Rev. Amber
Belldene of San Francisco, CA; the Rev. Laurie Brock of Lexington, KY; the Rev. Megan Castellan of Ithaca,
BY; Anna Fitch Courie of Honolulu, HI; Dr. David Creech of Morehead, MN; the Rev. David Hansen of
Woodlands, TX; Emily Miller of Chicago, IL; Carol Howard Merritt of Chattanooga, TN; The Rev. Marcus
Halley of Minneapolis, MN; and the Rev. David Sibley of Walla Walla, WA. Information about each of the
celebrity bloggers and the rest of the team is available on the Lent Madness website.
If you’re looking for a Lenten discipline that is fun, educational, occasionally goofy, and always joyful, join the
Lent Madness journey. Lent needn’t be all doom and gloom. After all, what could be more joyful than a season
specifically set aside to get closer to Jesus Christ?

Brother, give us a word From the monks at the Society of John the Evangelist
Monasticism began when a few faithful men and women went into the desert to seek God and live a life of
prayer. These Desert Fathers and Mothers, as they became known, were spiritual beacons whom other sought
out for their wisdom in the ways of God. The seeker would approach and ask, "Father (Mother), give me a
word."
The Brothers have adapted this ancient tradition for today, offering online a daily "word" to all who seek a
deeper knowledge of God, a means of handing on what we ourselves have received. You might use each day's
word as a focus for your prayer. Say the word to the rhythm of your breath and invite the Holy Spirit to speak to
you through that word. You might also use the day's saying as a focus for meditative reading or lectio divina,
reading slowly and allowing your mind to drift as the words inspire you to further prayer and reflection.
We hope you'll join us every day for a word, which we pray will help you to deepen your life with God.
https://www.ssje.org/word/ or just search for ssje.
d365 has devotions for every single day and will have a
special set of devotions for the season of Lent called the
Journey to the Cross. There are 5 different stops in the daily
meditations and all are accompanied by lovely music (turn
your volume on). Although put together for and by
students, the depth and quality of the meditations is
invaluable for all who follow Christ. You can also get this
as a mobile app (Google Play or the App Store) for free.

the LPS Emergency Pantry during the school year. The Pantry is located at Hawthorne,

collecting them for Clinton Elementary School and receive money for each label and top collected. Many thanks
