THANK YOU FOR GIVING TO THE LORD

Greetings! For those that do not know me, I am Jessica Hickman Chairperson of the CE committee. The stewardship committee has asked me to speak to you for a moment this morning. And no…not to ask for money! It is to say thank you!

The fall pledge campaign is “Thank you for giving to the Lord”, using 2 Corinthians 9:11-12 which says…“Yes, God will give you much so that you can give away much, and when we take your gifts to those who need them they will break out into thanksgiving and praise God for your help. HAVE YOU LOOKED AT THE CHURCH WEBSITE LATELY??

www.churchofthecov.org You will see that the Sunday sermons are posted for your viewing pleasure! What a great way (if you have a lap-top computer or an iPad) to share with our shut-ins if you are visiting them! You can also keep up if you travel or just have to miss church one Sunday. It is truly a wonderful ministry!

We are looking for some interested members who would be willing to be the videographer one Sunday a month. You can video any of the three services. It takes about 35 minutes as only the sermon portion of the service is re-corded. That includes some set up time. A team of 4 would be perfect so each person would only be responsible for one Sunday a month.

If you would be willing to help with this exciting new ministry please contact Jerry Davison, phone 724.222.4265 or email [email protected]. Thank you for your consideration, it is greatly appreciated!

FROM PASTOR EMILY

Dear COTC Friends:

It is hard to believe that 3 years have passed since I came to the COTC! I came here feeling called by God to this place, but also feeling nervous as whether or not I would succeed in ministry. I am pleased to say that I feel I have succeeded, not due to my own talents, but due to the talents of the many dedicated members of the COTC and God’s help.

From the adult speaker series in which I brought community lead-ers in to discuss violence, homelessness, education and addiction, to the increase in mission efforts and participation, to the many worship services I have led, it has been a wonderful time of min-istry with you. I have visited so many of you in your homes and hospitals and you have shared many life stories with me. I have baptized your babies and helped you exchange vows of marriage. I have traveled all the way to Haiti with some of you and to the LeMoyne Center with others. I have laughed with you and cried with you and I am profoundly grateful for it all. I have loved being your pastor. Thank you for accepting me and loving me in return.

If I am to leave one thought with you all, please remember this: being Christian is not really about policies and procedures or meetings and minutes, it is about Jesus. It is about loving and following him. Let him into your heart and he will change you. He loves the world and he loves each and every one of you. And so do I.

May God bless you, always, Pastor Emily

FAIR TRADE COFFEE

NEW PRODUCTS TO BE AVAILABLE THIS FALL

Fair Trade Products are a mission project of Presbyterian Women. Fair Trade products aid small farmers around the world to make as much money as possible from their small farms by forming co-ops so as not to have to sell their products to big conglomerates and thus loosing much of the money they should realize from their products. Not only do the co-ops allow the farmers to make more money but they also allow them to work together to grow better products. Small farmer co-ops are the heart of Fair Trade. Farmers earn a fair price for their crops, build their own businesses, and restore and preserve our planet. Each and every one of you connects with these farmers and their achievements with every Fair Trade product you buy.

Many of you have asked for the individual coffee single serve cups. They are now available from Equal Exchange our supplier of Fair Trade Products and we will make them available to you starting on the 4th Sunday of September, our usual coffee sale Sunday. They will be available in boxes of 12 single serve cups for $9.00 per box. We will have 2 flavors; Organic Breakfast Blend (This blend is a sweet and balanced blend of medium and French roasts.) and an Organic French Roast (The same French Roast that has been available ground in the bags.) These single serve cups are recyclable with a recyclable aluminum foil top, the empty cups should be rinsed and are (#5 recyclable plastic), the coffee grounds are compostable and the box is recyclable cardboard.

Some of you have also asked for a higher percentage of Cacao chocolate bars. An extra Dark Panama Chocolate with 80% Cacao is now available and we will have it available in October, if not in September. It costs us more to have the chocolate shipped in the warm months as they cold pack it to ship it.

Equal Exchange is an independent, cooperatively owned organization with over 100 worker owners, each with an equal stake and an equal vote in the business. To learn more about equal exchange go to - equalexchange.coop/products.

PW at The Church of the Covenant began making the Fair Trade Products available to you in September of 2010. We make a small profit on our sales and the profit is made available for mission trips and projects. So far we have given $555 to the Menaul Trips, $100 to the Operation Christmas Child Boxes, $450 to the Haiti Trips for a total of $1,105. Also Equal Exchange donates a portion of every pound of coffee, tea and chocolate that Presbyterian PC (USA) congregations purchase back to the Presbyterian PC

(USA) hunger program.

Gym Nights for

W&J Students

The Church of the Covenant will be hosting six gym nights for college stu-dents this fall from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on the following dates (all Mondays):

September 21, October 5 & 19, November 2 & 16, December 7

They will have volleyball, basketball and other activities available to them. If you would like to come and hang out with some college students, feel free to do so at any of those times.

PACK THE PICK UP

IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!

Each of the last three years Pack the Pickup has increased its "haul" of food for the Greater Washington County Food Bank. Last year we collected 2 1/2 tons of food. This year we will be launching this effort sev-eral weeks earlier....on Saturday, November 21 so we can help for the entire holiday season. You'll be hearing more about how you can be involved in the weeks to come. Stay tuned!

The following gently used books were donated anonymously.

The Library Committee thanks the donors.

The Summons by John Grisham. An aging judge summons his two adult sons to his home to discuss the details of his estate. One son is a law professor and the other is the black sheep of the family. Unfortunately, the meeting does not take place as the judge dies. He leaves behind a shocking secret known only to the lawyer son.

The Lady in the Attic by Tara Randel. This is the first book in a series entitled “Annie’s Attic Mysteries”. A widow named Annie Dawson receives a phone call from an attorney who tells Annie that she has inherited her grandmother’s home and all its contents. Annie journeys from her home in TX to her grandmother’s home in ME. As she drives, Annie wonders if this move might be the beginning of a new chapter in her life.

A Place Among the Nations: Israel and the World by Benja-min Netanyahu. In this book, Netanyahu traces the origins, history, and politics of Israel’s relationship with the Arab world and the West. He also lays out his own ideas for peace in the Middle East. The following two books are by the same author.

Ghost Girl: The True Story of a Child in Peril and the Teacher Who Saved Her by Torey L. Hayden. The author is a teacher of emotionally disturbed children. One of her students is Jadie, a child so withdrawn that she refuses to speak at school. Over time, Miss Hayden works to unlock the mystery of Jadie’s pain in an attempt to rediscover the child who has been lost to a world far more sinister than anyone could suspect. By shar-ing this story, the author shows the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit.

Twilight Children: Three Voices No One Heard Until a Thera-pist Listened by Torey Hayden. Eventually, Torey Hayden left the classroom to work in the children’s psychiatric ward of a large city hospital. Here she faced three of her most chal-lenging cases. One child was a 7 year old girl named Cassan-dra who had been kidnapped by her father and found 3 states away, starving, dirty and picking through garbage cans. Another child was 4 year old Drake, a preschooler who would only speak to his mother. The author was totally unprepared for the shocking truth about Drake’s condition. The third person was an 82 year old woman named Gerda who had

suffered a stroke and was now fearful and unwilling to engage in conversation. After working with these three cases, Torey Hayden’s faith in the human spirit was reaffirmed. Healing Through the Power of Prayer: What the Bible Says about Healing by Timothy J. Dailey, Ph.D. This interesting and readable book is divided into the following sections: Part 1 – A History of Healing; Part 2 – Why Do Bad Things Happen?; Part 3 – How to Pray for Healing; Part 4 – When Healing Doesn’t Come; and Part 5 – The Big Picture. It would be a good read for any Christian who believes in prayer.

The Jefferson Bible: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth Extracted Textually from the Gospels in Greek, Latin, French and English by Thomas Jefferson. The book opens with a chapter entitled “History of the Jefferson Bible” which explains how Jefferson had put this book together. Ba-sically, he assembled excerpts from the four gospels of the New Testament and rearranged them to tell a chronological and edited story of Jesus’s life, parables, and moral teaching. He eliminated the passages that seemed ‘contrary to reason’. It is recommended that any reader examine the aforemen-tioned chapter before examining the book. He finished the lengthy project in 1820.

Let God Surprise You: Trust God with Your Dreams by Heather Whitestone McCallum. The author is a former Miss America who became deaf at 18 months. Her story as well as those of many others demonstrates the amazing way God’s grace works in human lives. There are 14 chapters and some of the titles are Surprised by Sin, Surprised by New Faith and Surprised by Adversity. It’s an uplifting read.

When God Winks at You: How God Speaks Directly to You Through the Power of Coincidence by Squire Rushnell. The question is asked “Does God really hear our prayers?” Every time you receive what some call a coincidence or an answered prayer, it’s a direct and personal message of reassurance from God to you. The author uses the term ‘godwinks’ to describe these miraculous messages. The book is filled with stories about people who have experienced these godwinks after praying to God about something.

Peter Marshall: New and Inspiring Messages. Peter Marshall was a Presbyterian minister who gained recognition when he served as the Chaplain of the U.S. Senate after WWII. This small book contains 4 of his sermons that haven’t been printed before. “To this preacher, all human history was but the tale of God’s tender wooing of the self-willed, stubborn hearts of men and women – a drama that culminated in the Cross”.
