Transcript of Newsletter of The Bonsai Society of Upstate New York ...Zuisho Japanese White Pine that ......
ur featured speaker for the September
meeting will be a long time friend of our
society, Julian Adams. He will be giving an in
depth presentation on Pine bonsai, one of his
favorites. We will be raffling off an air-layered
Zuisho Japanese White Pine that Julian is bringing.
Julian is the sole proprietor and primary staff of Adams' Bonsai. He has been
active in bonsai since receiving a Christmas gift bonsai in 1970. Beyond improving
his own bonsai skills, Julian's primary interest is to spread the word about this
great art form he enjoys so much. Adams' Bonsai was
formed in 1984 in Lynchburg, VA to facilitate this interest.
Julian has had the opportunity to assist such artists as
Hiroyoshi Yamaji, Walter Pall, Jim Doyle, Peter Adams,
Bill Valavanis, Doris Froning, and Jack Wikle in
workshops. He has traveled to Japan multiple times, and
to Korea once to study bonsai. You can regularly see him
teaching at bonsai clubs and events throughout North
America.
Julian writes extensively about bonsai via articles for English language bonsai
publications and the Central Virginia Bonsai Society newsletter. He also offers
bonsai plants, wire, and supplies for sale at his website: http://www.adamsbonsai.com
Members can look over Julian's web site and contact him ahead of time if they
would like him to bring something special for them.
Come and learn from Julian at our first meeting of the new 2011-2012 season.

he August meeting which featured a Summer Bring Your Own Tree workshop was a bit different this year.
Members arrived at the lodge only to find that another group was having a meeting inside. All was not lost.
Members moved a few large picnic tables together for people to work on, and the workshop was held outside in the
setting sunlight. Thank goodness for nice weather. About 30 members attended and are to be applauded for the large
number of trees they brought. Those who were there came away with lots of new ideas and pointers from some of our
more experienced members. They helped with whatever questions and/or problems members had with their trees.
Some members who did not bring trees stayed to watch and offered their ideas and suggestions. The trees that were
brought in definitely got a lot of help before they were taken home to be worked on further.
1. Members with Junipers get advice from Harvey.
2. Theresa gets some help from Mark on how to
trim her Jade plant.
3. Dave works on his cascade Juniper.
4. Joe, Rick, and Bob work on Joe’s Japanese Maple. Check out Joe’s homemade work stand,
nice job.
5. Nick watches Joe work on his tree while Mark
trims a tree Iris brought.
6. Bill gives Ron some ideas as to what to do with
his Willow as Joe and Will look on.
7. Mark and Bill offer tips on trees as members
look on.

How to borrow a book
Choose from the items listed in the
website under the tab Library.
E-mail your request to: [email protected]
Be sure to include the name and catalog number of the book as well as your name,
telephone number, and the meeting date on which you would like to pick up the book.
Books ordered online will be distributed at the meeting requested.
Society Policies and Procedures
This information is printed in the Billboard once each year, however, it will be available for
your reference in the BSUNY website www.bonsaisocietyofupstateny.org
Library Policy:
Members are responsible for insuring that the books they
check out are checked in by the librarian when they are
returned.
All books are due at the meeting subsequent to the one at
which the book was checked out
There will be a $2.00 per month for each overdue book
and anyone with a book overdue or who has not paid the
overdue fine will not be eligible to check out any other
books or tapes.
If a book is not returned by the third meeting after being
checked out, the person who checked the book out will
be billed for the replacement cost.
All books are due at the June meeting and no books are
to be taken out over the summer.
Fines collected will go into a library fund to pay library
expenses and buy new books and tapes. A book is
overdue immediately after the meeting at which it is due.
This is because the rest of the members will not have
access to that book until the next meeting.
Recording Club Events:
There will be no audio or video taping of any club
sponsored events. The club itself reserves the right to
record some special events with permission of those
participating.
Paid workshops:
Reservations for paid workshops are confirmed when
payment is received. Workshop fees are not refundable,
but members who have paid but cannot attend may sell
their reservation to other members. (The society usually
has a waiting list).
Guests Welcome:
Members of other bonsai clubs, guests of members and
other interested people who are not members of BSUNY
are welcome to attend our meetings and enjoy our
programs from time to time. When we have out of town
speakers, non-members are asked to pay a fee to help
defray the expenses of the program. Anyone who wishes
to attend the meetings on a regular basis should become
a regular dues paying member.
Members sales at Meetings:
Members may bring pre-bonsai plants, pots and other
supplies for sale at club meetings. No trained bonsai
please. You must set yourself up at a table and arrange to
have yourself or someone handy to deal with customers.
The club asks for 10% of the sales.
