DIGGING DEEPER

Throughout the summer months at worship we

will be preaching on the Old Testament texts, the

semi-continuous readings assigned for the day.

The readings begin on Holy Trinity Sunday, June

11 with Genesis 1 & 2, a story of creation and

God identity. For the next few months we’ll read

through Genesis, ending the book on August 20th

with the ending of the story of Joseph and his brothers in Egypt. This will be an

opportunity for us to dig deeper into the stories of the first book of the Bible.

To accompany the preaching on Sundays, starting June 25 through August 27, we

will have a ‘Digging Deeper’ class for adults right after the 10 o’clock worship. We’

ll spend an hour discussing, reading, learning about the book of Genesis, even

some of the stories we won’t hear on a Sunday morning.

Deacon Cindy and Pastor Ginny will be teaching these classes. Join us!

the worship life here at New Hope. In the process, we have discovered some of

our core values. One of the core values was to make sure children have a wel-

SUMMER PLANS FOR THE WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY

The Wednesday morning Bible study group meets all year round at 10:00 AM. Eve-

ryone is invited to attend, even if you can’t be there regularly. This summer the

group will be reading and discussing selections from contemporary literature in the

collection Listening for God, volume 2, ed. by Paula J. Carlson. [This book is

available from Amazon.com for about $5, if you’d like to get a used copy.] Here’s

the schedule (we’re reading chapters out of order to accommodate the facilitators’

plans). It would be best if you could read the chapter before we discuss it in class.

Faith Formation a.k.a. Christian Education

As those on the task force were considering several options regarding welcoming young children to worship, we

realized no one in the group had young children! So, we invited families with young children to two meetings to

get their ideas about making worship a welcoming place for children.

Between the meetings and emails we received from those who couldn’t attend the meetings, over 10 families re-

sponded. Several great ideas surfaced from those meetings and, one in particular was presented to the church

council.

Beginning with the Fifth Sunday worship in July (July 30),

we’ll move our worship space to the Fellowship Hall for sev-

eral weeks. During those weeks, we’ll set aside a “pray

ground” for young children. This designated area will have

child-friendly chairs and tables, books, coloring books, etc.

(quiet toys), and age-appropriate worship materials for the

children to use. There’ll also be an area around the pray

ground for parents to sit. The nursery and the colorful chil-

dren’s activity bags will be available too.

We look forward to designing and supplying our space here

at New Hope. If you’d like to be a part of that, please con-

YOUTH GIFTS for SHUT-INS

The high school youth of the con-

gregation have created special gift

boxes for the shut-ins of the con-

gregation. These boxes will be giv-

en to the shut-ins when the pastor

makes her visits. During the sum-

mer months the youth will also be

invited to make the visits as well.

The gift boxes bright colors are a

sign of the love and care of the

youth being extended to those who

can’t physically join us for worship,

but who are definitely part of our

family at New Hope. Thank you,

youth and adults who helped create

them!

Conversation in Come-UNITY

Conversation in Come-UNITY was originally created by Steven Lewis and me as a ‘place-holder’ to maintain mo-

mentum for the May Kickball game between Law Enforcement and the community, as we planned and imagined

the details for the game. We began gathering early in the fall of last year. However, through time the bi-monthly

gatherings have become opportunities for deep, meaningful conversation between members of the community

crossing the color and culture divide. One of our goals is to strengthen community through cross cultural relation-

ships.

Relationships are key to who we are as human beings. In a recent article from the online magazine Patheos, How

Modern Science Proves A Critical Aspect of the Genesis Creation Narrative, https://goo.gl/ZxaBrB, the author

points out “The truth we know, both from the Bible and from modern science, is that God was correct in the very

beginning– it’s not good to be alone. It’s not good to be socially isolated or detached from meaningful relation-

ships.” In our gatherings we not only see the value of creating relationships, but intentionally seeking to share our

stories across the color and culture divide. Our communities are fractured by a number of divisions, particularly

the ubiquitous division of color and culture. Sometimes our conversations can make us uncomfortable, but we

have developed trust and have created a safe space for all to share. Our conversations are beautiful and creative.

Those who have been gathering have asked to continue our meetings even though the Kickball game is over (and

a success!). So we have decided during the summer months (June-August) we will meet only once a month –

July 20 and August 24, both Thursdays, from 7:30-9pm at the Turn House/Hobbits Glen Golf Course. If you have

New Hope Celebrates

the 500th Anniversary

of the Reformation Many events are in the planning process. Reformation Sunday and

Confirmation is October 29, which is a 5th Sunday celebration this year.

This gives us a lot of opportunity for special events.

All during the fall season we have ideas for Reformation themed

events:

Gods Work Our Hands Weekend Sept. 8-10 gives us an opportunity

to do an event with other congregations.

We are planning to have special showings of several Luther themed movies.

Bishop Elizabeth Eaton is preaching in Washington, DC in October.

A small group book study is planned using Great Emergence by Phyllis Tickle, who says the church changes

every 500 years. How is it changing now? This book will be used in the Adult Sunday School 10am class is the

fall, as well as at other times.

The Wednesday 10 am Bible study group will begin studying Luther the Reformer, The Story of the Man and

His Career by James Kittelson in the fall.

What are the 95 Theses and how is the Holy Spirit calling us now to develop our theses for change?

Barry Hommerbocker and Linda Yergey are able to present a mini slide show, in several different formats, of

their recent Reformation Tour of Germany.

USING THE AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) AT NEW HOPE

Someone has collapsed! Maybe they’re having a heart attack. We called 911. We need

the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Where is it located at New Hope?

It is located in a case above the water fountain in the narthex (entranceway).

I’ve never been trained to use an AED. What can I do?

Open the case and turn it on. The voice prompts will give you step by step directions

telling you what to do.

I’m not sure if the person had a heart attack. I don’t want to shock someone when

they don’t need it.

The AED reads the person’s heart rhythm and only tells you to push the button to

give a shock if the heart rhythm shows it is needed.

When you have an opportunity, take a CPR/AED course. Howard County Fire and Rescue offers free courses every

month. If an AED is used in under 2 minutes, the chance of survival is 90%.

The Reformation Spreads in Europe

Martin Luther is, deservedly, receiving most of the attention as we mark the beginning of

the Reformation in Saxony. But with remarkable speed, those teachings spread to other

countries in Europe. How did that occur? Largely through the work of some courageous

leaders. Let’s look at how the Reformation came to a few countries whose descendants

have helped shape the ELCA.

In Sweden, two brothers, Olavus and Laurentius Petri, spearheaded the Reformation. Both

had studied theology with Luther in Wittenberg. They returned to Sweden around the same

time King Gustav I Vasa was creating an independent nation. He made Olavus pastor of

the city church in Stockholm, where he translated the New Testament into Swedish, creat-

ed a catechism, published an order of worship, and provided a Swedish hymnal. Mean-

while his younger brother, Laurentius, was made the first Lutheran archbishop of Sweden;

he and Olavus jointly produced a complete Bible in Swedish.

In Denmark, too, the Reformation came early. As in Sweden, it was led by a young man who had studied under

Luther in Wittenberg—Hans Tausen. The ruler at the time, Frederick I, was formally opposed to Reformation ide-

as, but he protected Tausen and tolerated Lutheran writings. The next king, Christian III, stripped the Roman

Catholic Church of its wealth, and Luther’s pastor, Johannes Bugenhagen, made a journey from Wittenberg to

crown the king and help organize the Danish church.

Norway was, at the time, ruled by Denmark, and initially the spread of the Reformation there was slower. Christian

III tried to encourage its growth there, but at first there wasn’t much popular support; it was more of a top-down

reformation. Nevertheless, pastors such as Jorgen Eriksson, who would become bishop of Stavanger, preached

Lutheran teachings, and the Reformation gradually took hold.

Mikael Agricola was yet another student of Luther, and it was he who led the Reformation in Finland. At that time,

Finland was ruled by Sweden. The first Lutheran bishop of Turku (and thus of Finland), Martinus Skytte, left most

Roman Catholic orders in place. Agricola’s ministry as the next bishop, though, mirrored

much of Luther’s: he translated the New Testament into Finnish, and in the process cre-

ated the Finnish literary language. He prepared a prayer book in Finnish, created a ver-

nacular order of communion, and collected Finnish hymns. He was also the first married

bishop of Turku.

Moving southeast from Wittenberg, Slovakia is another area where the Reformation took

hold. Two visionary people must receive much of the credit. Jan Hus lived about a cen-

tury before Luther and ministered in neighboring Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), but

his reforming teachings influenced Slovak Christians, as they did Martin Luther himself.

So the way was prepared for the Reformation from Wittenberg. And in the early seven-

teenth century, another graduate of the University of Wittenberg, Jirˇı¯ (or Juraj) Trˇ

anovský, helped cement the Reformation in Slovakia by translating many hymns and

collecting them into a hymnal called Cithara Sanctorum (“Lyre of the Saints”).

Lutherans from these lands and many others came to America, establishing first separate enclaves, but gradually

merging with other Lutherans into church bodies, including our current Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
