Dr. Muhammad Sadiq Khattak has set

an exceptional academic record at

international level by doing two Ph.D

degrees, two MS and a post-doctorate

from reputed universities of the world

with distinctions within a period of five

years.

Throughout his academic record, he

obtained highest scores and clinched

gold medals in all categories. On completion of his B.Sc.

Engineering in session 2005-06, he joined UET as Lec-

turer. In 2007, he left for France to do MS and Ph.D in

Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lorraine. He

completed his MS in just nine months and got admission in

the same university for Ph.D on, “Energy and Mechanics

of Materials” in 2008. During the same year, he won a

scholarship for MS and Ph.D in the Georgia Institute of

Technology (GIT) in the United States.

After taking his teachers and supervisor at the University

of Lorraine into confidence to continue his Ph.D there

simultaneously with his MS and subsequent Ph.D at the

GIT, he left for the United States where too he completed

his second MS in less than a year and got admission in

Ph.D.

The 29-year old Dr. Khattak completed his Ph.D on “nano-

technology” at the GIT. Completion of Ph.D in less than

three years with distinction in a short span of time is a

record itself. Khattak managed to continue his Ph.D

research work from the University of Lorraine while pursu-

ing Ph.D. at GIT, USA.

After completing his first Ph.D at GIT USA, he returned to

France to submit and defend his second Ph.D in just six

months to set another record. Without wasting time, his

next venture was to pursue post-doctoral fellowship which

he did it in six months. Dr. Khattak returned to Pakistan in

August 2012 and re-joined his Alma Mater as an Assistant

Professor.

Department of Commerce Office of the General Counsel arranged a ten-day

study tour to the United States in collaboration with Higher Education Com-

mission (HEC) for representatives and officials from selective Pakistani uni-

versities and key private sector, who are establishing a university-based

innovation and entrepreneurship ecosytem through installation of technol-

ogy transfer offices (TTOs) and technology incubators (TIs) on university

campuses. CLDP is aimed to provide technical assistance in the commer-

cial law arena to the governments and private sectors of transitional coun-

tries in support of their economic development goals. The program was

aimed to expose the participants to best practices in establishing and oper-

ating Technology Transfer Offices and Technology Incubators.

UET Peshawar has recently established its Office of Research Innovation &

Commercialization (ORIC) and its Manager, Research & Developement, Ayesha Rauf represented the University in the delegation.

The members held meetings in Washington, DC with CLDP and the United States Patent and Trademark Office and visited universi-

ties having similar set ups. The program covered areas of IP protection and management strategy, technlogy valuation, technology

commercialization, technology licensing, technology-based entrepreneurship, services to industry and negotiation skills for technol-

ogy commercialization.

UET Peshawar topped the list of leading academic institutions involved in

research and was selected to be amongst the top five out of the 50 teams

that participated in the “Taking the Next Steps - Commercialization and

Going International Program”. This program was arranged by the National

ICT R&D Fund and conducted by Cambridge Advisors Network. As part of

this program the UET team is to visit the United States to present their pro-

ject on smart ways of electricity theft detection and isolation to address the

resultant loss of substantial revenue. The presentations in the US will be to

investors, potential customers and partners in four US cities. The product

was designed and developed at the "Centre of Intelligent Systems and Net-

works Research (CISNR)" by a team that includes Dr. Gul Muhammad

Khan, Miss. Shehla Kiran, Dr. Sahibzada Ali Mahmud and team of

researchers.

The theme of the program was to expose researchers to skills and knowledge that will help them to commercialize their research. Ini-

tially 50 teams funded by the National ICT R&D Fund that included teams from NUST, IBA, LUMS, COMSATS, UET Lahore, UET

Peshawar, IMS Peshawar, NED Karachi and other major universities of the country were invited to participate. UET Peshawar was

among the 20 teams, selected in the first round. In second round, the teams were trained on “High Value Sales Management Training

– Global Sales Strategies for Ambitious Pakistani ICT Entrepreneurs and Managers”. Again through a short-listing process, a total of

five teams were selected from second round-one from industry and four from the academia, with UET Peshawar ranked as the top

amongst the top four research institutions.

EEC Conducts Seismic Capacity Test on Full Scale Building Model Before and After RetrofittingEarthquake Engineering Center (EEC), at Civil Engineering Depart-ment, performed the first-ever test conducted in Pakistan on a full scale concrete block masonry building, to determine its seismic capacity and risk assessment before and after retrofitting as con-crete blocks are cheaper than bricks and can be made from the local material easily anywhere in Pakistan.

The test was performed by Dr. Khan Shahzada, lecturer Department of Civil Engineering in the research project titled, “Seismic Capacity Assessment Before & After Retrofitting of Infrastructure (Unreinforced Concrete Block Masonry Building)” sponsored by HEC Islamabad through UET Peshawar. After October 8, 2005 Kash-mir earthquake, the use of concrete block in masonry building has been increased tremendously and its seismic capacity assessment is must to be determined experimentally on scientific basis.

Dr. Khan Shahzada, said that testing on a full scale concrete block masonry building was done for the first time in Pakistan, and test of similar nature on brick masonry buildings only have been conducted in Italy in 1995, USA in 2004 and UET Peshawar in 2010. The experi-mental data yield that the lateral/seismic capacity of unreinforced concrete block masonry buildings can be enhanced twice after retro-fitting by using ferrocement overlay. Shahzada said, it would bring socio-economic benefits for the country as most of the building could be retrofitted with minimum cost instead of rebuilding them. Dr.Bora Gencturk, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmen-tal Engineering, University of Houston extended their help and guid-ance as consultant in this project.

A one-week vocational training for in service officials (sub engineers) was held in two phases by the IEEE Foundation (KPK Chapter) under the

auspices of Continuing Engineering Education Center (CEEC) UET, Peshawar. The officials of C&W, Irrigation and Public Health Engineering

Departments, of KPK attended this training with the aim to upgrade their knowledge and skills regarding flood management and eradication of

losses caused by floods. This was part of a series of capacity building and skill

development trainings under the humanitarian assistance of IEEE Foundation

for the flood affected areas of KPK.

A certificate distribution ceremony of training was held on October 9, 2012 at

CEEC with vice chancellor, as chief guest. In total, sixty three participants were

awarded completion certificates. In his concluding remarks, the vice chancellor

appreciated IEEE Foundation for their humanitarian assistance and contribution

of CEEC, adding the Center under supervision of Engr. S. Asif Ali Shah, Director

CEEC is moving in right direction. He said engineers are the backbone of econ-

omy and their professional growth is the need of the day to get at par with interna-

tional standards. Therefore, CEEC is playing an effective role with highly quali-

fied resources and state-of-the-art facilities. The ceremony was attended by Prof.

Dr. Azzam-ul-Asar, Chair IEEE KPK Chapter, Engr. Alamzeb, Chief Engineer

(North) Irrigation Department, and resource persons of the training course.
