November

A Rabbit-Tale By

Pastor Mark Haas

3

This time of year, thirty years ago this fall, in 1983, I was in the midst of completing my first quarter of studies at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The only course in which I was enrolled was New Testament Greek, an intensive study to get enter-ing seminarians up to speed for translation and entrance requirements for seminary classes. I wound up with an “A” in the class; however, over time, I’ve forgotten much of what I learned, yet some of which comes back to me when I’m preparing for a sermon or Bible study. This is not important information, but it sets a context for what I had grown fond of the previous eleven Novembers as a Lutheran elementary school principal! Each of those previous falls took us CNH District educators to the Asilomar State Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, next to Monterey, for a Thanksgiving week conference, Sunday evening through Wednesday noon. It was always a great time for us, especially the last several times I attended!

In my recollection, a typical trip to Asilomar would actually begin the day before we left: it was “Big Game” Saturday and we would watch Stanford play Cal on television! Sometimes we would even participate in alumni parties, though none of us had attended either school. The closest I was to being an alumnus was my principal days at Bethlehem, Berkeley and doing research in the Ed-Psych library on the Cal campus for my first Master’s Degree. And as for Stanford, the husband in one of the member families in Berkeley was a Stanford Medical School grad who hosted alumni parties! Anyway, that’s how the week started!

Before we began adopting children, I would take Dee to her parents’ home in Modesto and drive myself to Pacific Grove and then back to Modesto or Fresno, the latter when Dee’s sister married and Thanksgiving dinner would be there! Once Melanie and Gregory were underfoot, Dee remained in Hayward as I had taken the principal position at Good Shep-herd. In those several years, the teaching staff would travel together in a van on Sunday af-ternoon, have room arrangements in a housing facility at Asilomar called “The Lodge,” hang out for the week with friends, attend most of the sessions, party each evening (educators can be a raucous bunch!) and return to Hayward on Wednesday afternoon, and then go to wherever Thanksgiving dinner would be served, typically in Modesto for me! I probably shouldn’t reveal much of what happened during the Conference when we were not in sessions, “to protect the innocent” Joe Friday would say to introduce TV’s “Dragnet,” but needless to say we had a great time, good collegial bonding, and exciting weeks that my former staffs still recall with pleasure when it’s brought up today, whether we visit in per-son or on the telephone or other means of communication. However, those days are long gone. Though educators gather annually, it’s not at Asilomar anymore, and the motel ac-commodations they utilize are more likely more “professionally” respected, but they change location every year and those of us who are still around always talk about “remember when…” we short-sheeted that speakers bed, or the raccoon’s were begging for food, or we built the empty beer can pyramid from floor to ceiling!

4

For me, Thanksgiving Day dinner in those days usually paled to the excitement of the previ-ous few days. At dinner I was the only one who had experienced Asilomar, except for one year Dee attended with me prior to kids, so it wasn’t a conversation piece for the entire family. We typically had monstrous feasts that took several days and left-over concoctions to lean out the refrigerator, and we always had a great time together, but it was “different.” And come Monday morning following Thanksgiving, back on campus with staff meetings and kids run-ning to classes, the conference’s afterglow would already be dimming, yet the experiences would be talked about and “exaggerated” in our memories for days, weeks, and until today!

November does bring us into a more dramatic change of weather as the fall temperature change takes over the tree leaves for color and winds blow them down. The holiday season begins to take a more determined effort to focus us on celebrations right through New Year’s Day. No doubt you have many memories of the holidays, both good and bad, that you talk about as you gather with family and friends. Maybe it’s when Uncle So-and-So fell sound asleep, face-first into the mash potato bowl, after eating all that delicious turkey. Or when grandma dropped the pumpkin pie on the kitchen floor as she was taking it from the oven, and the words she screamed were a language we didn’t understand! Or, when the prodigal son is overly late again for dinner or doesn’t even show up to the chagrin of all, but especially to mom. Or, you forgot a crucial ingredient for your specialty dish and it’s too late in the prepa-ration to head for the market!

What are your favorite November and Fall memories? Or maybe, memories you would like to forget but cannot get them out of your mind? We tend to focus on the good memories we’ve had, sometimes embellishing them to make them more palatable or easy to re-tell. It’s truly a gift to lie to rest your less than good thoughts so you can accentuate the positives over the negatives. When we can do that, we become a tad like God and His memory, cited in Jeremiah and quoted in Hebrews, that in His new Covenant with us, written not on stone but on our hearts, He forgives our sin and will remember our sin no more. What a promise for our lov-ing, heavenly Father, who gave His only Son to die for us so that we might be forgiven of all sin and graciously given the gift of eternal life! If you could do one thing for you and your family this November, whether at the Thanksgiving Day dinner table or at another occasion, a thing that has lasting consequences, it would be to remind everyone at the table what God, our Father, has done for us in Christ Jesus, and celebrate that memory, of salvation, more than any other you can recall!

Can you do it? Recall your favorite memories, but couch them in the greatest memory…saved by grace, though faith for Jesus’ sake!

Yours in Christ’s service,

Pastor Mark Haas, Soli Deo Gloria

Note to the Ushers:

Please be sure to count and log attendance and communion in the notebook provided in the cabinet. It is vital for our records. Communion cards are collected and put in the office after the service.

Please be sure to empty offering trays and return them to the altar. Put contents into a zipper bag located in the counters cup-board and put bag into safe after each service.

If you are ushering at the 9:00 service, you need to start the coffee. Please DO NOT dog open the doors. There is no need for that anymore. The doors will remain open when you unlock them and the panic bars work without being dogged.

If you are ushering at the 10:30 service, you need to clean up the coffee cart and put it away, remove all white sheets from the attendance pads and put them in the office. Check ALL doors in the church and Sunday school area to be sure they are locked and the lights are all off.

November!? I cannot believe that November is already here and October has passed! The past few months have just flown by, it seems like September just started yesterday. I can tell fall is in full swing now; most of the trees have changed, the days are getting shorter, and colder. I don’t think I will ever ad-just to cold weather no matter what state I’m in!

I have been very busy this past month with music, Confirmation, youth, Sunday School, the Advent family event, and planning for the upcoming month.

Hand bells have been a real joy for me since I get to see so many great people work as a team to bring a song to life. By His Grace continues to be a joy as well, and we are constantly working to make worship the best it can be. Jubilate sang for the first time in church last month and we cannot wait to sing again in November!

Confirmation is something I look forward to every week! I am amazed by some of the an-swers the students give and how God is working in their lives and hearts. We are approaching the end of the 10 Commandments and will start the Apostles Creed soon. I am still meeting with the youth every other Sunday and it is always a good night with great food and fellow-ship. It is great watching youth connect with different members of the congregation!!

Sunday School has been going well, I have been able to connect with kids that I don’t get to connect with through youth group. We are still in need of some aides/teachers for the school year. It is a great experience and easy to do! The curriculum is easy to teach and you don’t have to help/teach every week. Advent is quickly approaching and so is my first family event! We will be doing the Road to Christmas on December 4th from 5:30-7:30. There will be a pot luck dinner followed by ac-tivities such as a craft, a story and caroling. A signup sheet for the pot luck and for the event is available in the narthex area. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to talk to me!

The end of November will be a crazy but enjoyable time for me. Debbie, my supervisor from school, will be in town for a visit to see how I am doing on the 26th. We will meet, with Pas-tor, and talk about my ministry here so far. Then the day after that I go back home to Chicago for Thanksgiving to spend time with missed family and friends! I’m sure this month will fly by like the last few, and I’m sure it will for everyone else as well! I hope you are able to spend time with family as I am and take time to thank God for all He has given us! ☺

Blessings on the coming month, Katy

CONTINUING/COMING IN NOVEMBER 2013…

We conduct our worship services at 9 AM (Contemporary) and 10:30 AM (Traditional). Adult Bible Classes on Sunday are of-fered at 8 AM and 9:15 AM. Sunday School for nursery/preschool age children through age 12 meets at 9:15 AM! Children will leave the sanctuary during the early service, following the

Lamb’s Sermon, for classes in the Fellowship Hall and Sunday School wing.

REVITALIZATION

We continue to receive donations to the “Revitalization Fund” established to raise monies to offset the expenses of calling a DCE/Family Life Minister-Intern. You may recall that our stewardship program (2011) involves these items…Financial Growth by Three Means: (1) Commitment to tithing, (2) Increased contributions annually, and (3) Specific pledges to the Revitaliza-tion Fund.

MUSICIANS/SINGERS

“By His Grace,” our contemporary service worship leaders, is seeking out more instrumentalists and singers to accent their ministry. In the meantime, Bill on guitar and Denise on keyboard and sometimes Doug on bass as instrumentalists are the core along with Clydene, Jenny, Marcia and Bill as vocalists! Our DCE Intern, Katy, has joined the group and will sing as often as possible. Do you know someone, maybe you, who could join along? Let Bill Rosenberry or pastor know.

SHARE FOR THANKSGIVING

Our representatives with the El Dorado County Food Bank are Phil and Doris Corson. They can use your help…physically work with them…and for donations, provide

canned goods as often as possible! They especially need peanut butter, jelly, soup and tuna. For Thanksgiving Eve Worship on

Wednesday, November 27, let’s fill the altar area with canned goods…pick up extras when you visit Costco or Sam’s Club! Let’s sup-port our community’s needy food closet…some more! Thanks!

LITTLE BACK PACKS

The donations of nutritional snacks and drinks are very much appreciated by students at Schnell School! This ministry re-sumed in October with 15 backpacks being filled! Thank you! Your generosity has been outstanding! Watch and listen for fill dates! Thank you very much!

Kathy Cass, Lay Prayer Minister

Dear Friend in Christ – we all have at one time or another heard the message that God permits trials because He knows a greater good will come from it. I had a small stroke at the beginning of September which affected my balance and speech, and my husband, Jim ended up in the hospital with dangerously low blood pressure and a stubborn infection. As of this writing, I am progressing well in my recovery. This was a warning from God before something worst happened. I have an absolute aversion to doctors and my solution was not to go for several years. Meanwhile my blood pressure and blood sugar were raging out of control. They are in normal ranges now but only with help of powerful drugs. I was very blessed by our God.

Another good to come out of this was to reemphasize how important the prayers of others are. To pray for others, especially those on our prayer list, is one the most important tasks Jesus calls us to. We may not know their need but He does. And His will is we participate in the process by opening doors so He may act. I like that idea – I am opening a door! That’s an important activity!

And another idea that came out of it, we need to be in prayer for the care givers. Both the family members and friends that step up to the plate but also the health care professionals – the doctors, nurses, therapists, lab techs, the CAT scan techs, the MRI techs, the nurses aides, those work in nursing homes and have the thankless job of cleaning up those who cannot care for themselves, janitors, maintenance personnel, etc. Most of them got into healthcare because they care about people but it is one of the most demanding professions there is. Even if they don’t realize their need for God they really need His care to keep doing a good job. I can’t thank enough all who helped Jim and me.

So, be faithful in your prayers for others, in opening doors for God to work in their lives. If not for His sake, for the selfish reason that you one day will need to be on the receiving end of others prayers.

“Hear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. In the day of my trouble I will call to You, for You will answer me, For You are great and do marvelous deeds, You

alone are God.” Psalm 86:1,7,10

It's flu season! Flu viruses typically start circulating in October, and be-cause the vaccine takes about 2 weeks to develop full effectiveness, you should be getting your flu shot now, if you haven't already.

Experts don't expect a season worse than last year's; in fact, the vaccine this year is made up of the same formula as last year's, with two strains of the A virus and one strain of the B vi-rus.

This year, they are also offering a stronger vaccine, consisting of two strains of both the A and B virus and a new vaccine made from much less egg base to help those with an egg al-lergy. Vaccines are made after chicken eggs are injected with the viruses and the immuniza-tion formula is harvested from the chicken embryo. (There is no live virus in the vaccine, so, contrary to what some may think, you cannot get the flu from the vaccine.) In the future, sci-entists will be able to grow vaccines in cell cultures instead of eggs.

It's important to remember that vaccines don't provide guaranteed protection! But if you practice good hygiene measures, you can reduce your risk of getting the flu or colds this sea-son. You should wash your hands thoroughly and often and cough into a tissue or your el-bow. Most grocery stores offer antiseptic wipes to clean the cart handles—use them!!

First Lutheran's “Visiting Angels”

Each month, a group of our church ladies visits several of our church members, who are living at one of the Gold Country sites and are unable to get to church anymore. These “angels” visit, share hugs and God's love, and leave a special snack with a message.

Those visited do love the company, attention, and “updates” on what's happening in their church community. But they don't always get to see each other. So in October, we gathered in the Gold Coun-

try dining facility around a large table to enjoy a delicious lunch and conversation together. Everyone had a great time! We hope to repeat this in the future and include those who were unable to attend in October.

After lunch, several of our shut-in members in the skilled nursing and assisted living facility were also visited. Sharing in this way is personal and special and gives them a way to ex-press concerns or share things about their lives that are probably little known to those out-side of their families. And it lets them know that they are not forgotten or unloved in the progression of their days that all seem the same.

Please pray for all those in their waning years and for this ministry as it expands to meet the

needs of so many, especially those who may not know of God's love and His promises for all.

Announcements

Dear First Lutheran Community,

Thank you very much for the scholarship money; it is and always has been very helpful in continuing my education. I recently became a junior at San Diego State and started taking my upper division Business/Marketing classes. Based on my academic achievements, SDSU nominated me for membership in Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors organization. I'm still employed at 24 Hour Fitness and recently earned a promotion to Mem-bership Counselor.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers.
