From the Editor

I always rejoice in the personal achievements of the Rotarians, both professional and personal ones. They show the strength of each of our Clubs, as well as that of the whole of our Rotary community. We should not forget that Rotary is a global organization that brings together successful individuals. Our knowledge, skills, experiences, contacts, influence are very important in recognizing our organization as a respected and significant one in society. Therefore, the individual professional successes of our members are the strength of the whole organization. The end of the year is always an occasion to summarize achievements, in the District, in clubs and in ourselves. It is very important that we are satisfied on all these levels. It is important that we feel fulfilled in all aspects of our own lives, as well as Rotarian ones, of course. This is the 6th issue of our Newsletter in this format, and when we scroll through all the previous issues, we can see all segments of activism in our Rotary. Many events have not been included in the Newsletter for the past six months, but they are on our site and on Facebook. It is difficult to fit all the diverse activities (both small and large), all of our social gatherings and anniversaries of which we are proud, all large (and smaller) projects, within a limited number of pages. However, it is important that the diversity of actions and our extensive social engagement in helping the local community are at least recorded to a large extent. Thus we can have a constant reminder of our achievements as Rotarians, club officials, presidents, and members of the District Team. I hope that by looking backwards, each one of you will awaken your enthusiasm for an even more successful next year. Happy Holidays to all!

ADG Nikola Božić, editor

A Word From the Governor My dears, We have had a very dynamic period. I met and got to know many of you better during my governor visits or at your club meetings and festivities. I think that now we are closer, because we have strengthened our Rotary chain of friendships. A lot has been done in this period. I will mention the names of the clubs that impressed me with their activity: Subotica, Palić, Kula, Sombor, Belgrade, Belgrade-Skadarlija, Belgrade-Metropolitan, Belgrade-Čukarica, Novi Sad, Novi Sad Alma Mons, Sremska Mitrovica, Ruma, E-Club, Smederevo, Požarevac Viminacijum, as well as the clubs Rotaract Belgrade, Niš-Medijana, Niš-KV, Prokuplje and Niš. It should be mentioned here that at the beginning of December we attended the charter awarding ceremony at the new Rotary Club Belgrade-King Peter I. It was a great opportunity to pay tribute to IPDG Velibor Zolak as Governor, for him to speak and deliver the charter to the club. We are welcoming the new club and new Rotarians to our great Rotary family, we wish them successful work and lots of club projects. This event seemed to be the initial step for new people becoming interested in the idea of forming several new Rotary clubs in a number of cities in Serbia. This means that our organization works well, that it is becoming visible and gaining appreciation on the social scene, and that more and more people are interested in joining us. At the end of this newsletter, I would like to wish you pleasant holidays, lots of happiness, health and success in the New Year of 2018. I wish for you to spend the holidays with your dearest loved ones, to enjoy new positive energy so that we can continue MAKING A DIFFERENCE. Yours in Rotary,

DG Bane Ranđelović

District: International cooperation During his visit to Skopje, Governor Bane Ranđelović met with Igor Andreevsky, coordinator of the Rotary Clubs of Macedonia (District 1912) and ADG Maja Čanačević. Congratulations to our neighbors for a successfully organized Rotary Ball and the signing of a significant partnership agreement with UNICEF. These clubs being previously in the same District and now n neighboring ones, we have within them excellent examples of inter-club cooperation: Vranje-Kumanovo, Nis Konstantin Veliki-Kočane Vinica, Sremska Mitrovica-Kavadarci, etc. This is a good basis for further joint work and shared projects. Governor Bane Ranđelović used the visit to RC Skopje Center to attend their regular meeting.

DG Danijel Petrović (D1912 Slovenia and Macedonia) was on a private visit to Serbia and on that occasion he met with our DG Bane Ranđelović. The two Governors took the opportunity to talk openly and with great optimism about inter-district relations, the ever more intense cooperation of clubs from our districts, as well as the future of Rotary in our Balkan countries and wider, enjoying the company of their beautiful spouses Irena and Valentina. Strengthening co-operation between D1912 and D2483 will be a priority in the coming period, regardless of the districts or zones. The meeting was organized in Ćuprija, and we are thanking the hosts from RC Ćuprija-Morava on the impeccable organization of this meeting.

Dear Governor, dear female and male Rotarians D 2483, There are billions of reasons for our two districts to connect and cooperate. Not only because a billion Euros indicates a huge cooperation, but also because there is so much friendship, cooperation, visits, twinning, projects and socializing between our districts. One of the indicators of the meaning and size of cooperation is as many as 9 member ICC committees in District 1912 formed to cooperate with D2483. The potential for cooperation is practically unlimited, bearing in mind that both districts are composed of 4 countries, which are geographically and culturally different but highly harmonized and unified when it comes to Rotarianism and a promotion of prosperity and charity. This rotary year is only halfway over, and yet so much has been done! I am looking forward to the second part as well as the future, which will upgrade friendship and cooperation to an even higher and higher level. Bearing in mind the holiday days that are approaching, don’t forget about yourself, your family, your closest friends. Let’s take time to rest, socialize and celebrate, so that in 2018 we can enjoy energy and contentment. To all a Merry Christmas and Happy New 2018 and don’t forget: ENJOY ROTARY! Danijel Petrovič DG 2017/18 D-1912

A panel with the topic “Youth and Rotary” was held in Novi Sad on Wednesday, December 6. This is the first in a series of events in which our District launches a wide discussion on the greater involvement of young people in our movement. The panelists were DG Bane Ranđelović, DGE Vladimir Matić, DGN Ljiljana Lainović and DRR Srđan Barac, led by ADG Nikola Božić, Charter President Rotary E-Club D2483. The basic conclusions are that the modern Rotary movement should be more open to young successful people outside of Rotary, and that mechanisms should be found for a greater transfer of Rotaractors into Rotary. In addition, it has been noted that there are many activities for young people organized by Rotary International which should be used more in our area so as to be even more visible to young people who are developing into true leaders.

District: Official visits On November 22, 2017, Governor Bane Ranđelović, during his visit to Montenegro and the Rotary Club Podgorica, met with the Minister of Education of Montenegro Dr. Damir Šehović. Apart from the governors, the Rotary Movement delegation also consisted of the president of RC Podgorica, Milena Durutović, District coach Neno Kavarić and ADG Nikola Božić. Under discussion were this year’s Rotary movement’s activities and goals at the level of the District, and especially in Montenegro and Serbia. It was emphasized that this year the Rotary Movement would be intensively engaged in education, schools and students, which was very favorable assessed by the Minister. Further cooperation, fostering good relations between the official bodies of Montenegro and the Rotary organization, as well as the possible hosting and lecturing of Minister Šehović in RC Podgorica, was further agreed upon. The Governor expressed great gratitude to Neno Kavarić for organizing this meeting.

On the occasion of the official visit to RC Kragujevac, DG Bane Ranđelović, along with his ADG Marko Vujnović, District Secretary Bata Uraković, District Committee Chairman Zorica Jestrović and the President of RC Kragujevac, Aleksandar Petronijević and Secretary Stefan Aleksić, was in an official visit to the Mayor of Kragujevac, Mr. Radomir Nikolić. They discussed the significant jubilee, the 20 years of RC Kragujevac’s work and humanitarian efforts, the current partnership with the local self-government in Kragujevac, and, perhaps, even more importantly, the goals of the Rotary organization for this year and the possible forms of further joint work of the Rotarians and the local self-government of Kragujevac. The Governor expressed gratitude to ADG Mark Vujnović for organizing this meeting.

There was an open and constructive discussion with the Mayor of Zrenjanin, Mr. Čedomir Janjić, about education, ecology, but also the overall cooperation of the local self-government and the Rotary organization. This briefly describes the constructive and positive dialogue between Governor Bane Ranđelović, president of RC Zrenjanin Dejan Dunđerski, District coach for Vojvodina Danilo Ljevnajić, DRR Srđan Barac and members of the management of RC Zrenjanin and D2483, on the one hand, and Mayor Janjić with his associates, on the other hand. The meeting went well, especially due to the members of Rotaract Club Zrenjanin, who are also members of the Mayor’s local team. The meeting was organized during the official Governor DG Bane Ranđelović’s visit to RC Zrenjanin, in the course of a donation was presented to the local elementary school. RC E-klub: The youth of the future

The first bitcoin donation Rotary E-Club launched donations for their “Young Future” project in bitcoin currency during the celebration of the second anniversary of the charter award. On that occasion, about 21 mbTC (or $300) was collected, with the value increasing multifold in the meantime. The E-club’s traditional events include expert discussions and dialogues, and this year a panel discussion “Youth and Rotary” was organized. The E-Club’s desire is to organize its events throughout our District in order to become familiar with as many clubs and Rotarians as possible within the local community. Member desire to get involved as much as possible in the projects of other clubs, and that E-club projects are directed to places where there is no Rotary. The E-club was this time downloaded in Novi Sad. The event brought together 100 guests and 30 Rotary, Rotaract and Interact clubs.

RC Beograd Čukarica: Fund raising

Supporting Education Rotary Club Belgrade Čukarica organized a ceremony and a large fundraising event on the occasion of the charter’s 10th anniversary. With an auction of dresses held by RTC Belgrade-Čukarica members as well as a sale of paintings created by the art colony, 7,600 Euros were collected, which will be used for implementing the “100 for 100” global grant and student scholarships. In addition, after several months of effort, negotiations and activities both at the district level and internationally, especially by DGE Vladimir Matić and DG Bane Ranđelović, presented at the ceremony were the final club decisions regarding participation in a large global grant, as well as the entire financial construction that has exceeded all initial expectations, reaching an incredible $140,000. With this figure, RC Belgrade-Čukarica will start applying for a global grant, with which in the course of 2018, some 30 to 35 schools in our District should receive computer rooms.

RC Podgorica: Support for the blind and visually impaired

Give me the opportunity to study

On a November 24 donor dinner on the occasion of the “Give me the opportunity to study” project organized by RC Podgorica, money was collected for the purchase of a Braille writing machine for the needs of the visually impaired in the JU Resource Center for Children and Youth Podgorica. Besides the Rotarians, family and friends, the action was supported by Elektroprivreda CG which donated funds for the purchase of another mobile Braille writing machine. The drive itself began with the plan of connecting a public educational institution with state and private entities, as well as possible donors, and resulted in funds collected beyond all expectations. The drive itself is a continuation of the long-term cooperation of RC Podgorica and the Resource Center Podgorica, and it is based on the previous donation from September, in the form of aides and accessories for equipping a speech therapy cabinet.

RC Beograd Čukarica: Global Grant

„100 for 100“: The First Half To date, 54 schools have been covered by the “100 for 100” project with total donations of over 55,000 Euros, which means that we may complete the 100 projects and 100 schools project by the end of the year and make the schools beneficiaries of our Rotary projects. The most important part of the “100 for 100” project is a global grant which has the goal to equip computer rooms in 30 schools in Serbia and Montenegro. Also, cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia is planned. So far, about $139,000 has been collected and an application will be submitted shortly. The equipment will be delivered to schools in the cities where Rotary clubs participated financially. A score of 5 out of 5 for this semester.

RC Subotica: Supporting youth

Scholarships for students and pupils RC Subotica awarded scholarships to 14 university students and pupils who, according to a special committee, had achieved the best scholastic results. Of the total 94 entries received, seven high school pupils and the same number of students were selected, those who showed the best results and, in accordance with the defined scoring system, achieved the best placement. The scoring system included success in education, social status, and results in sports and other extracurricular activities. SMB Construction and AMETEK helped in the realization of our drives. This is another exceptional and worthwhile Rotary Club drive, which is fully in line with this year’s District education goals and will help the Rotary Movement make new young friends, and perhaps future Rotaractors, and then Rotarians.

Novi Sad: Equipping schools

Two clubs helping schools

RC Novi Sad and RC Novi Sad-Alma Mons in separate computer equipment drives helped two schools in its city – the Primary School Dušan Radović and the Primary School Nikola Tesla. The support is part of the District “100 projects for 100 schools” program.

Some of them will enter a sports hall or the first time and feel the joy of playing and socializing with their peers. The donation is worth EUR 3,000, and the funds were collected by RC Belgrade together with all Rotarians from Serbia and Montenegro.

District: The aims of the RI President

Every Rotarian to plant a tree

With respect to the aims of RI President Ian Riseley, one of which is the desire to plant as many rotary trees as possible in this Rotarian year, our District 2483 has actively joined the global drive. Many clubs have planted more trees than they have members, and some of them have also entered their planted trees onto our District’s digital map. The initiative is called the “Rotary Tree Map” and it is our wish that, when the map is completed, it will be presented to President Ian Riseley and perhaps also used by Rotary for a global project. In addition to the exact location for each tree, information on the type, the cause for planting, who planted it, an appropriate tree name can also be given. To get a simple data entry form, you need to contact the clubs at [email protected]. At this moment, the digital map of planted trees contains 258 trees planted by 13 clubs. If your club has not yet registered but has planted trees, please contact us.

RC Zemun: Support for schools

RC Zemun carried out a drive of equipping a computer room in the elementary school Radivoj Popović in Zemun for hearing-impaired children, developmental dysfunction, autism, and speech disorders. The drive is continuing because the goal is to equip another classroom in this school according to its needs.

RC Beograd Metropolitan: IT for young people In order to acquaint young people with IT, RC Belgrade Metropolitan has begun a series of free video game programming courses for children aged 7-14. Future lecturers from RtC Niš Center and RC Novi Sad Danube joined the first course, with the idea to organize matching courses in their towns at the beginning of 2018. We hope that we will have the opportunity to train volunteer teachers from other cities and enable as many pupils as possible to attend free courses throughout Serbia and Montenegro.

RC Beograd Skadarlija: Multiple drives

In the previous period, RC Belgrade Skadarlija has carried out several successful humanitarian drives, such as the following: • 20 children with 5 companions were sent to Hotel Satelit in Zlatibor (value of drive: around 5,000 Euro). • Our member Ivana Topalović MD is offering monthly free check-ups with recommended therapy for children from the Children’s Shelter in Voždovac. • We organized a performance in the Children’s Cultural Center and gave out 280 gift parcels to children from the Novi Beograd and Zvezdara Children’s hospices, from CIM and “Give Me Your Hand” associations. This is a part of the ongoing “You Too Are Santa Claus” drive, and our aim is to deliver a minimum of 650 gift parcels. The value of the parcels delivered until now is about 2,500 Euro. Let us remind you of the jubilee 10th anniversary of the charter, which will be celebrated when there are funds to the amount of 700 Euro for the Autism Serbia NGO. Villa Jelena has hosted 250 guests, the current governor, and another 6 PDG, DGN, DGEs. At the ceremony, we also enjoyed the music of the young harpist Zoja Đorđević. Also, a fraternization ceremony was organized with RC Rijeka (Croatia).
