Saint Pope Pius X, Great Protector of Traditional Catholicism

In a time of total turmoil in the Catholic Church all over the world, we traditional Catholics remind the Church that our faith is built onimmutable truths founded on:

1) The Bible.

2) The Deposit of Faith left by Jesus to the Apostles.

3) Ancient liturgical traditions that have been passed on from one generation to another.

4) All Ecumenical Councils, (not just Vatican II).

5) The writings of the Doctors of the Church and saints.

6) All the pope’s encyclicals.

Pope St. Pius X or Giuseppe Sarto is one of those great defenders of the purity of faith that we traditionalist especially look to. We doso because he was the one to point out, and tried to eradicate, the terrible heresy of Modernism from the Catholic Church hierarchy.

“Indeed, the true friends of the people are neither revolutionaries, nor innovators: they are traditionalist.” Pope St. Pius X

The Pope’s motto was to “Restore or Re-establish all things in Christ”, “instaurare omnia in Christo”. Ephesians 1:10. And this isprecisely what we traditional Catholics are trying to do today, reform, restore, renew and resist modernism and change to doctrine.

Pope Pius X had been a spiritual director and rector of a seminary, so he knew how important the proper formation of priest is. Aspope, he called to the attention of the bishops the “spirit of independence” in younger clergy that he called a “menace” to ecclesiasticaldiscipline. To counteract this he strongly stated that all their studies be based on St. Thomas Aquinas.

“the principles of philosophy laid down by St. Thomas Aquinas are to be religiously and inviolably observed, because they are themeans of acquiring such a knowledge of creation as is most congruent with the Faith (Contra Gentiles, II, 2, 3); of refuting all theerrors of all the ages, and of enabling man to distinguish clearly what things are to be attributed to God and to God alone (ibid., iii; andSum. Theol., 1, xii, 4: and liv, 1).”

“The reason is that the capital theses in the philosophy of St. Thomas are not to be placed in the category of opinions capable of beingdebated one way or another, but are to be considered as the foundations upon which the whole science of natural and divine things is

3

based; if such principles are once removed or in any way impaired, it must necessarily follow that students of the sacred sciences willultimately fail to perceive so much as the meaning of the words in which the dogmas of divine revelation are proposed by themagistracy of the Church.”

“St. Thomas perfected and augmented still further by the almost angelic quality of his intellect all this superb patrimony of wisdomwhich he inherited from his predecessors and applied it to prepare, illustrate and protect sacred doctrine in the minds of men (InLibrum Boethii de Trinitate, quaest, ii, 3).”

“That We should act without delay in this matter is made imperative especially by the fact that the partisans of error are to besought not only among the Church’s open enemies; but, what is to be most dreaded and deplored, in her very bosom, and are themore mischievous the less they keep in the open. We allude, Venerable Brethren, to many who belong to the Catholic laity, and, whatis much more sad, to the ranks of the priesthood itself, who, animated by a false zeal for the Church, lacking the solid safeguards ofphilosophy and theology, nay more, thoroughly imbued with the poisonous doctrines taught by the enemies of the Church, andlost to all sense of modesty, put themselves forward as reformers of the Church; and, forming more boldly into line of attack, assail all that is most sacred in the work of Christ, not sparing even the Person of the Divine Redeemer, whom, with sacrilegiousaudacity, they degrade to the condition of a simple and ordinary mall.”

He saw the Holy Eucharist as the center of our faith. He encouraged all Catholics to frequently receive Holy Communion and allowedchildren to receive as soon as they were of the age of discretion.

“The devotion to the Eucharist is the most noble because it has God as its object; it is the most profitable for salvation, because it givesus the Author of Grace: it is the sweetest, because the Lord is Sweetness Itself.”

Because of the heresies being spread, he dedicated much of his effort to catechetical instruction, not only for children, but also foradults, giving detailed rules, especially in relation to suitable schools for the religious instruction of students of the public schools anduniversities.

Above all things, (as also concerns us traditional Catholics), St.Pope Pius X was extremely concerned about maintaining the purity ofthe Catholic faith. He pointed to the dangers of certain new theological methods based upon Agnosticism and Immanentism, thatthen divest the doctrine of the faith of its teachings of objective, absolute, and immutable truth. These methods also had “subversivecriticism of Holy Scripture and the origins of Christianity”.

His encyclical “Pascendi”, in which he expounds and condemns the system of Modernism, is what we traditional Catholics are mostlyconcerned with. It points out the danger of Modernism “in relation to philosophy, apologetics, exegesis, history, liturgy, and discipline, and shows the contradiction between that innovation and the ancient faith; and, finally, it establishes rules by which tocombat efficiently the pernicious doctrines in question.” Catholic Encyclopedia 1913.

So he established a Committee of Vigilance with ecclesiastical sanctions against all clergy teaching modernism. He also censoredbooks that propagated modernism. All clergy had to take an oath, binding themselves to reject modernism. You can see the OathAgainst Modernism here.

He recognized that the study of the Bible was both, the most important and the most dangerous study in theology. Sohe formed the Biblical Institute, under the direction of the Jesuits (when they were still trustworthy).

He was born poor and died poor. So he also had great care for the poor. He also looked for solutions to the social problems of histime. Many Catholic associations of his times were leaning towards Socialism and promoting a spirit of insubordination toecclesiastical authority. So he banned them and formed new ones that made it possible for a balanced Catholic social action thatprospered. But he always stated that there was no stable social order that was not based on the authority of Christ the King and Himgoverning over governments.

Let each one of us traditional Catholics take time to pray and study what this great saint wrote. Let us also share this information withothers. I never really understood Modernism, the root of the crisis in the Church today, until another traditionalist pointed it out to meand had me read the encyclical “Pascendi“. Print it up, pass it out. We are not crazy, the church today is. St. Pope Pius X is a saintand great teacher. May we work and die for the “re-establishment of all (that is pure Catholicism) in Christ”.

It is said that our dear St. Pope Pius X died of a broken heart when all his beloved seminarians, from all over the world, had to leaveRome and go to fight each other in the beginning of World War I. St. Pope Pius X, pray for us.

Saint Pope Pius XMotto "renew all things in Christ

St. Pius X (1903-14)

An 11 year period where Luisa “The Divine Mirror” completed the very important book“The Hours of the Passion”, which was soon followed by WWI.

In the year of 1903, Luisa completed the 1st volume of her life, up to the point on February 28, 1899, when she was given theobedience to write.

“Several witnesses relate that one day Father Annibale came to the house of Luisa more content than ever, and said that he hadbrought this book to the Holy Father, Saint Pious X, who had received him several times in private audience. Father Annibale was

reading him one of the Hours (that of the Crucifixion), when the Pope interrupted, saying:

"Not this way, Father, but kneeling one must read.It is Jesus Christ that is speaking.

" Finally, Father Annibale, as Censor of the writings, obtained the Imprimatur from His Excellency the Archbishop of Trani for thevolumes written by Luisa (at that time there were already nineteen).

Book of Heaven - October 13, A.D. 1906Detachment. Necessity of these writings, which are a Divine Mirror. As I was in my usual state, my good Jesus made Himself seen for a little while, and He told me: "My daughter, in order to knowwhether a soul is stripped of everything, it is enough to see this: if holy or even indifferent desires arise within her and she is ready tosacrifice them to the Divine Volition with holy peace, it means that she is stripped; but if she becomes disturbed and upset, it meansthat she is keeping something for herself."

Hearing the word "desire", I said: ‘My highest Good, my desire is that I would rather not write any more. How it weighs on me – if itwasn’t for fear of going out of your Will and of displeasing You, I would not do it.’ And He, breaking my words off, added: "You donot want it, and I want it. That which I say to you, and which you write out of obedience, for now, serves as a mirror for you and forthose who take part in directing you; but the time will come when it will serve as a mirror for others. So, that which you write, spokenby Me, can be called ‘Divine Mirror’. And you would want to take this Divine Mirror away from my creatures? Watch it, seriously,my daughter, and do not want to restrict this Mirror of Grace by not writing everything." On hearing this, I remained confused andhumiliated, with a great repugnance to write these last words of His, but obedience absolutely imposed it on me, and only to obey, Iwrote. Deo Gratias.

Highlights:Pius X said that the motto of his pontificate would be "instaurare omnia in Christo"He advised all (Decr. S. Congr. S. Congr. Rit., 7 Dec., 1906).By the Decree "Quam Singulari" (15 Aug., 1910), he recommended that the first Communion of children should not be deferred toolong after they had reached the age of discretion. He published, 22 November, 1903, a Motu Proprio on sacred music in churches, and at the same time ordered the authentic GregorianChant to be used everywhere. On 8 Sept., 1907, there appeared the famous Encyclical "Pascendi", which expounds and condemns the system of Modernism. In few years Pius X has secured great, practical, and lasting results in the interest of Catholic doctrine and discipline, and that in theface of great difficulties of all kinds.

September 8th , A.D. 2016 – Nativity of the Blessed Virgin MaryCalendar for the Traditional Roman Rite

The Catholic Church celebrates today the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary on its traditional fixed date of September 8, nine monthsafter the December 8 celebration of her Immaculate Conception as the child of Saints Joachim and Anne.

The circumstances of the Virgin Mary's infancy and early life are not directly recorded in the Bible, but other documents and traditionsdescribing the circumstances of her birth are cited by some of the earliest Christian writers from the first centuries of the Church.

These accounts, although not considered authoritative in the same manner as the Bible, outline some of the Church's traditional beliefsabout the birth of Mary.

The “Protoevangelium of James,” which was probably put into its final written form in the early second century, describes Mary'sfather Joachim as a wealthy member of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Joachim was deeply grieved, along with his wife Anne, bytheir childlessness. “He called to mind Abraham,” the early Christian writing says, “that in the last day God gave him a son Isaac.”

Joachim and Anne began to devote themselves extensively and rigorously to prayer and fasting, initially wondering whether theirinability to conceive a child might signify God's displeasure with them.

As it turned out, however, the couple were to be blessed even more abundantly than Abraham and Sarah, as an angel revealed to Annewhen he appeared to her and prophesied that all generations would honor their future child: “The Lord has heard your prayer, and youshall conceive, and shall bring forth, and your seed shall be spoken of in all the world.”

After Mary's birth, according to the Protoevangelium of James, Anne “made a sanctuary” in the infant girl's room, and “allowednothing common or unclean” on account of the special holiness of the child. The same writing records that when she was one year old,her father “made a great feast, and invited the priests, and the scribes, and the elders, and all the people of Israel.”

“And Joachim brought the child to the priests,” the account continues, “and they blessed her, saying: 'O God of our fathers, bless thischild, and give her an everlasting name to be named in all generations' . . . And he brought her to the chief priests, and they blessedher, saying: 'O God most high, look upon this child, and bless her with the utmost blessing, which shall be for ever.'”

The protoevangelium goes on to describe how Mary's parents, along with the temple priests, subsequently decided that she would beoffered to God as a consecrated Virgin for the rest of her life, and enter a chaste marriage with the carpenter Joseph.

Saint Augustine described the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary as an event of cosmic and historic significance, and an appropriateprelude to the birth of Jesus Christ. “She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley,” he said.

The fourth-century bishop, whose theology profoundly shaped the Western Church's understanding of sin and human nature, affirmedthat “through her birth, the nature inherited from our first parents is changed."

Day TenThe Queen of Heaven in the Kingdom of the Divine Will.

The Dawn that rises to put to Flight the Night of the Human Will: Her Glorious Birth

The soul to the Queen of Heaven:Here I am, O holy Mama, near your cradle, to be spectator of your prodigious birth. The heavens are stupefied, the Sun isfixed upon You with its light, the earth exults with joy and feels honored to be inhabited by its little newborn Queen, andthe Angels compete among themselves to be around your cradle, to honor You and to be ready for your every wish.Everyone honors You and wants to celebrate your birth. I too unite myself with all, and prostrate before your cradle -where I see, as though enraptured, your mother Anne and your father Joachim – I want to tell You my first word; I want toentrust to You my first secret. I want to empty my heart into yours, and say to You: "My Mama, You who are the dawn, herald of the Divine Fiat upon the earth, O please, put to flight the gloomy night of the human will within my soul and inthe whole world! Ah, yes, may your birth be our hope which, like a new dawn of grace, regenerates us in the Kingdom ofthe Divine Will!"

Lesson of the Newborn Queen:Child of my Heart, my birth was prodigious; no other birth can be said to be similar to mine. I enclosed in Myself theheaven, the Sun of the Divine Will, and also the earth of my humanity – a blessed and holy earth, which enclosed the mostbeautiful flowerings. And even though I was just newly born, I enclosed the prodigy of the greatest prodigies: the DivineWill reigning in Me, which enclosed within Me a heaven more beautiful, a Sun more refulgent than those of Creation, ofwhich I was also Queen, as well as a sea of graces without boundaries, which constantly murmured: "Love, love to myCreator…" My birth was the true dawn that puts to flight the night of the human will; and as I kept growing, I formed thedaybreak and called for the brightest daylight, to make the Sun of the Eternal Word rise over the earth.

My child, come to my cradle to listen to your little Mama. As soon as I was born, I opened my eyes to see this low world,to go in search of all my children so as to enclose them within my Heart, give them my maternal love and, regeneratingthem to the new life of love and of grace, give them the step which would let them enter into the Kingdom of the DivineFiat, which I possessed. I wanted to act as Queen and Mother, enclosing everyone in my Heart, to bring everyone tosafety, and to give them the great gift of the Divine Kingdom. In my Heart I had a place for everyone, because for onewho possesses the Divine Will there are no constraints - only infinite expanses. I looked also at you, my child - no oneescaped Me. And since on that day everyone celebrated my birth, it was also feast for Me. But upon opening my eyes tothe light, I had the sorrow of seeing the creatures in the thick night of the human will.

Oh, what an abyss of darkness envelops the creature who lets herself be dominated by her will! It is the true night, but anight with no stars – with, at most, a few fleeting lightnings – lightnings easily followed by thunders which, in roaring, thicken the darkness even more, and unload the storm over the poor creature – storms of fear, of weakness, of danger, offalling into evil. My poor Heart was pierced in seeing my children in this horrible storm, in which the night of the humanwill had overwhelmed them.

Now listen to your little Mama: I am still in the cradle, I am little - look at the tears I shed for you! Every time you doyour will, it is a night that you form for yourself; and if you knew how much this night harms you, you would cry withMe! It makes you lose the light of the day of the Holy Will; it turns you upside down; it paralyzes you to good; it breakstrue love in you, and you remain like a poor ill one, who lacks the necessary things to be healed. Ah, my child, dear child, listen to Me: never do your will; give Me your word that you will make your little Mama content.

The soul:Little holy Mama, I feel trembling in hearing of the ugly night of my will. Therefore I am here, at your cradle, to ask ofYou the grace that, by your prodigious birth, You make me be reborn in the Divine Will. I will be always near You,Celestial little Baby; I will unite my prayers and my tears to yours, to impetrate for myself and for all, the Kingdom of theDivine Will upon earth.

Little Sacrifice:Today, to honor Me, you will come three times to visit Me in my cradle, saying to Me each time: "Celestial little Baby, make me be reborn together with You in the Life of the Divine Will." My little Mama, make the dawn of the Divine Willrise within my soul.

September 21st, A.D. 2016 – Saint Matthew Apostle and EvangelistCalendar for the Traditional Roman Rite

St Matthew HistoryThe feast day for St. Matthew celebrates the life of Jesus' disciple who wrote the Gospel of Matthew, one of the fourgospels in the New Testament that tells stories of Jesus Christ.

St. Matthew, one of Jesus' 12 apostles, was born in Galilee, the son of Alpheus (Mark 2:14). His original name was Leviuntil Jesus changed it to Matthew. He is primarily mentioned in the Gospels in lists of the disciples, except in the Gospelof Matthew, which tells the story of his conversion (Matthew 9:9).

St Matthew Facts

Matthew was a tax collector, also called a publican. This profession was among the most reviled in Judea. Taxcollectors worked for Rome, and not only did Jews pay Roman taxes to them, the collectors received a percentagefor their own profit. Jews in good standing did not associate with publicans.

Once Matthew begins to follow Jesus, he holds a dinner for other tax collectors and sinners (Matthew 9:10). ThePharisees, the strict Jewish law abiders that were leaders in the community, complained about Jesus, a teachereating with sinners. Jesus said, "For I have come to call the not the righteous but the sinners." (Matthew 9:13)

Early church writers claim that after Jesus' death and resurrection that Matthew preached Christianity in Persia,Macedonia, and Syria.

In the Orthodox Church, tradition says that St. Matthew refused to die even after several attempts. He was firstplaced upside down and lit on fire, then sunk in a coffin in the sea overnight. The ruler of Ethiopia, who tried tokill Matthew, apologized to the apostle and converted to Christianity.

St Matthew was one of Jesus' 12 disciples and writer of the Gospel of Matthew. His feast day is held onSeptember 21 in the Roman Catholic Church and November 16 in the Orthodox faith.

St Matthew Top Events and Things to Do

Because of his background as a tax collector, Matthew is the patron saint of bankers and accountants. His feastday would be a good time to audit your books if you are a business owner or re-establish a family budget.

Read the Gospel of Matthew. It was written for the people of Judea and features a unique perspective on theKingdom of God.

Matthew was a tax collector, which was one of the most reviled professions in Judaism at the time of Christ.People looked down on tax collectors, but even so Jesus ate with them. Spend the day honoring St. Matthew

getting to know somebody who is looked down upon in our society.

September 24th, A.D. 2016 – Our Lady of RansomCalendar for the Traditional Roman Rite

(Her Order’s establishment 1218)

The story of Our Lady of Ransom is, at its outset, that of Saint Peter Nolasco, born in Languedoc about 1189. At the ageof twenty-five he took a vow of chastity and made over his vast estates to the Church. After making a pilgrimage to OurLady of Montserrat, he went to Barcelona where he began to practice various works of charity. He conceived the idea ofestablishing an Order for the redemption of captives seized by the Moors on the seas and in Spain itself; they were beingcruelly tormented in their African prisons to make them deny their faith. He spoke of it to the king of Aragon, James I,who knew him well and already respected him as a Saint; for the king had already asked for his prayers when he sent outhis armies to combat the Moors, and he attributed his victories to those prayers.

In effect all the Christians of Europe, and above all of Spain, were praying a great deal to obtain from God the remedy forthe great evil that had befallen them. The divine Will was soon manifested. On the same night, August 1, 1218, theBlessed Virgin appeared to Saint Peter, to his confessor, Raymund of Pennafort, and to the king, and through these threeservants of God established a work of the most perfect charity, the redemption of captives.

On that night, while the Church was celebrating the feast of Saint Peter in Chains, the Virgin Mary came from heaven andappeared first to Saint Peter, saying that She indeed desired the establishment of a religious Order bearing the name of Hermercy. Its members would undertake to deliver Christian captives and offer themselves, if necessary, as a gage. Word ofthe miracle soon spread over the entire kingdom; and on August 10th the king went to the cathedral for a Mass celebratedby the bishop of Barcelona. Saint Raymund went up into the pulpit and narrated his vision, with admirable eloquence andfervor. The king besought the blessing of the bishop for the heaven-sent plan, and the bishop bestowed the habit on SaintPeter, who emitted the solemn vow to give himself as a hostage if necessary.

The Order, thus solemnly established in Spain, was approved by Gregory IX under the name of Our Lady of Mercy. Bythe grace of God and under the protection of His Virgin Mother, the Order spread rapidly. Its growth was increased as thecharity and piety of its members was observed; they very often followed Her directive to give themselves up to voluntaryslavery when necessary, to aid the good work. It was to return thanks to God and the Blessed Virgin that a feast day wasinstituted and observed on September 24th, first in this Order of Our Lady, then everywhere in Spain and France. It wasfinally extended to the entire Church by Innocent XII.

Reflection: Saint Peter Nolasco and his knights were not priests, and yet they considered that the salvation of theirneighbor was entrusted to them. We, too, can by good counsel and by prayer, but above all by holy example, assist thesalvation of our brethren, and thereby secure our own.

September 29th, A.D. 2016 – Dedication of Saint Michael the ArchangelCalendar for the Traditional Roman Rite

On Mount Gargano St. Michael appeared with a censer in his hand, on the spot where a church was to be built; henceit is said of him in the Office of the Church: "The angel stood before the altar of the temple, having a golden censer inhis hand;" an unmistakable allusion is here made to the vision of the heavenly altar which St. John saw (Apoc. 8, 3-4).

The Feast of the Dedication of the Archangel St. Michaelby Fr. Francis Xavier Weninger, 1877

Today's festival is called in the breviary of the Church, the Dedication of the Holy Archangel St. Michael. To understandthis, it is necessary to know an event which took place at the time of Pope Gelasius I. in the latter part of the fifth Century. In Apulia, there is a mountain formerly called Gargano, now Monte St. Angelo, or Angel's mountain. Near this mountain,

a herdsman was keeping his cattle. A steer strayed away from his herd and went into the woods on the mountain, to theentrance of a cave which was concealed by bushes. The herdsman, to drive the animal out of the cave back to the herd,

shot an arrow at it. The arrow, however, turned and flew with great force back to him. The herdsman and those who werepresent were terrified at this and none dared to go nearer to the cave. They went to the bishop, who was at Siponto, a

neighboring city, and informed him of what had occurred. The bishop, not doubting that a divine mystery was concealedunder it, ordered his congregation to fast and pray three days, in order that God might graciously reveal it to them. At the

expiration of the three days, St. Michael, the Archangel, appeared to the bishop and announced to him that the placewhither the steer had fled was under his especial protection, and that he desired that they should dedicate the spot to the

honor of God, and to the memory of St. Michael and all the Angels.

The bishop, greatly rejoiced, called the clergy and the people together, and having informed them of the revelation, formed a large procession and ascended the mountain. They found a large cave which was like a Church hewn out of the

rock. Above the entrance was an opening by which the whole interior received light. To offer the holy sacrifice of theMass in it, only the altar was wanting; but it was speedily erected by the pious bishop. The Church itself was soon after

dedicated with great solemnity to St. Michael and all holy Angels. The fame of this event spread in a short time all aroundand drew a great many pilgrims to the Church, while the many miracles that took place there, were a visible sign that the

veneration and invocation of St. Michael and the other holy angels must be very agreeable to the Most High. Today'sfestival was instituted to commemorate the dedication of the Church on Mount Gargano, hence it is called the dedicationof St. Michael, as he is especially venerated in that Church. The commemoration of the apparition of this holy Archangel

on Mount Gargano is celebrated on May 8th.

Besides this, other apparitions of St. Michael are recorded, which gave occasion, at different times, to the erection ofsplendid Churches in his honor, at Constantinople, at Rome and in France, as is to be read in the history of the Church.

Experience has taught that this considerably increased the veneration of this great prince of heaven, and in truth we havemost important reasons to show him especial honor; for, he is the head, or, as the Church expresses it, the prince of theheavenly legions. He is the first of those happy spirits who are continually in the presence of God, standing before His

throne. It was he who, at the first moment of his existence, turned to the Almighty and submitted to Him in perfectobedience. It was he, who, so to say, first took up arms against the proud Lucifer, who would not be subject, but equal to

Page 10: Newsletter No. 172 FSH - luisapiccarreta.co · The Pope’s motto was to “Restore or Re-establish all things in Christ”, “instaurare omnia in Christo”. Ephesians 1:10. And

10

the Most High. His humility, obedience and zeal for the honor of God raised him above all in heaven; as pride, disobedience and perfidy abased the proud Lucifer and precipitated him into hell.

St. Michael has been chosen by the Almighty as the protector of the Church of Christ, as in the old Covenant he was theprotector of the Synagogue. He was, in olden times, solicitous for the welfare of the true believers in the Synagogue, as is

evident from the words spoken by the holy Archangel, St. Gabriel, to the prophet Daniel: "Michael, one of the chiefprinces, came to help me" (Daniel, x.). The angel, under whose protection the Persians were placed, desired that the

Israelites should remain longer in Persia, as many Persians came to the knowledge of the true God by associating with thechosen people. The holy Archangel Gabriel, however, desired that the Israelites should be released out of Persia, because

he feared that too great intimacy with the Persians might induce them to become faithless to the true God. St. Michaelunited his prayers with those of St. Gabriel, and thus evinced his care for the true believers.

Not less watchful is he now for the faithful of the New Testament and for the entire Church. He comes to help her, praysfor her and protects her against her enemies. At the end of the world, he will manifest his protection of her, especiallyagainst the Antichrist, the greatest enemy of the Christians, as St. Gabriel revealed to the holy prophet Daniel, saying:

"But at that time, Michael shall rise up, the great prince, who standeth for the children of thy people" (Daniel, xii.). Thisholy Archangel is also appointed to bring the souls of men to the throne of the Most High, that they may receive their

judgment; and that their sentence may be favorable, he strongly assists them in the last combat, which, at the end of theirdays, they have usually to fight with the Evil one. The devil, at that moment, uses all his powers to overcome man and

make him unhappy for all eternity. St. Michael, appointed by God to assist and to strengthen our souls in this dangerouscombat, helps us to conquer, Hence the holy Church addresses him in the name of all the faithful in the prayers for the

dying, as follows: "Holy Archangel Michael, protect us in our fight, that we may not go to perdition on the day ofJudgment." She teaches us also to invoke this holy Archangel before all other heavenly spirits, in the litany of all Saints.

But if we desire to secure his intercession, and enjoy his assistance in our last combat, it is necessary that we endeavor toimitate his example and fight bravely against the evil spirit, whom, at the end of our lives, we desire to conquer with St.Michael's assistance. Among different representations of St. Michael there is one in which he has a shield in his hand, upon which are the words: "Who is like unto God?" The word " Michael " means in Hebrew, " Who is like God?" St.Michael used this as a weapon, so to say, against the proud Lucifer who desired to be equal to the Lord. "Who is like

God?" "Who is equal to God?" With these words, he conquered and precipitated Lucifer and his followers into hell. Thesame weapons, the same shield we also should use in all temptations. "Who is like God?" Who is so mighty, so wise, sobeautiful, so amiable as God." Who is so much to be feared as God? Who can recompense my service as God? Who cando so much good or so much harm to me as God? Whom have I reason to serve and obey as God? Whose grace have I to

seek more than the grace of God? Whose disfavor have I to fear more than the disfavor of God?

Whosoever uses these and other wholesome thoughts as spiritual weapons against the spirit of hell, fights after theexample of St. Michael, and will always conquer Satan. And those who accustom themselves now to combat thus, havereason to hope that they will vanquish Satan in the last fight, and that the holy Archangel will surely assist them at that

important moment.

In conclusion, I will add the beautiful words of St. Lawrence Justinian, by which he admonishes all Christians to veneratethe holy Archangel. "It is our duty," says he, "to give honor to the prince of the heavenly legions. We ought to praise himespecially on account of the elevated state of grace in which he is; and because God has distinguished him by bestowing

so high a dignity upon him; for his invincible strength, for the Almighty's favor to him and his heroic constancy incombats; but in all these, we must honor him only in God, who has created him and us, He is very powerful with the Most

High. The glorious victory is well known to us, which he won in heaven, soon after the Creation, over the rebelliousangels. Not without reason does our Mother, the holy Church, endeavor to honor him especially, because she knows thatthe divine Majesty has given him to her as protector, mediator and receiver of all elect souls. Hence all should recognize

St. Michael as their protector, and duly praising him, honor him with devout prayers, commend their cares to him andrejoice him by reforming their lives, as his love is so great, that he cannot refuse our prayers, nor reject our confidence,

nor disregard our love; as he protects the humble, loves the chaste, guides the innocent, guards the pious in this temporallife, and leads them to their heavenly home."

LESSON THIRD: On the Unity and Trinity of God – Part 1

Q. 180. What does "unity," and what does "trinity" mean?A. "Unity" means being one, and "trinity" means three-fold or three in one.Book of Heaven - February 8 A.D. 1915“My daughter, the union of our wills is such that the will of one cannot be distinguished from that of the other. It isthis union of Wills that forms the perfection of the Three Divine Persons because, since We are equal in the Will, thisuniformity brings also the uniformity of Sanctity, Wisdom, Beauty, Power, Love and of all the rest of Our Being. Therefore, We reflect Ourselves One into the Other, and our satisfaction in looking at Ourselves is so great as torender Us fully happy. So, each One is reflected in the Other, and each One pours into the Other all the qualities ofour Being, like many immense seas of different joys. If anything were dissimilar among Us, our Being could not beperfect, or fully happy.

Q. 181. Can we find an example to fully illustrate the mystery of the Blessed Trinity?A. We cannot find an example to fully illustrate the mystery of the Blessed Trinity, because the mysteries of ourholy religion are beyond comparison.Book of Heaven - February 28 A.D. 1899The sun is fire, but it is also light and heat. Here is the Most Holy Trinity veiled in the sun: the fire is the Father, thelight is the Son, the heat is the Holy Spirit. However, the sun is one, and just as one cannot separate fire from lightand heat, so one is the power of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who in reality cannot be separated from one another. And just as fire produces light and heat at the same time, in such a way that fire cannot be conceived without light andheat; in the same way, the Father cannot be conceived before the Son and the Holy Spirit, and vice versa, but all Threeof the Them have the same eternal beginning.

Q. 182. Is there but one God?A. Yes; there is but one GodBook of Heaven – Volume 1Other times, in this hiding of Jesus and my going around in search for Him, when He would make Himself felt insideof me and then come out from within me, I would find not Jesus alone, but all Three Divine Persons - now in the formof three children, gracious and immensely beautiful, now with one single body and three distinct heads, but resemblingeach other, all three of them attractive. Who can tell my contentment? Especially when I would see the three children, whom I would hold, all three of them, in my arms. I would kiss now one, now another, and receive their kisses; now

12

one would lean on my shoulder, another on the other shoulder, and another would remain in front of me. And whiledelighting in them, I would go about looking at them and, to my amazement, from three I would find one.

Q. 183. Why can there be but one God?A. There can be but one God because God, being supreme and infinite, cannot have an equal.Book of Heaven - May 2 A.D. 1899“All Heaven is veiled in my Church. Just as in Heaven one is the head, which is God, and many are the saints, ofdifferent conditions, orders and merits, so in my Church, in which all Heaven is veiled, one is the head, which is thePope, and the Sacrosanct Trinity is veiled even in the triple tiara that covers his head; and many are the members thatdepend on this head – that is, different dignities, various orders, superior and inferior, from the littlest to the greatest, they all serve to embellish my Church. Each one, according to its degree, has the office entrusted to it, and by theexact fulfillment of the virtues it comes to give from itself a splendor so very fragrant to my Church, that the earth andHeaven are perfumed and illuminated, and the people are so drawn by this light and by this fragrance, that it is almostimpossible for them not to surrender to the truth. I leave it to you, then, to consider those infected members which, instead of shedding light, cast darkness. How much torment they cause in my Church.”

Q. 184. What does "supreme" mean?A. "Supreme" means the highest in authority; also the most excellent or greatest possible in anything. Thus in allthings God is supreme, and in the Church the Pope is supreme.Book of Heaven - December 22 A.D. 1899The heavens, the stars and all the other beings speak to us, though in a mute language, of a Supreme Being, of anUncreated Being, of His omnipotence. In fact, the most learned man, with all of his science, cannot arrive at creatingthe most wretched mosquito, and this says that there must be a most powerful uncreated Being who created everything, and gives life and preservation to all beings. Oh, how the whole universe, in clear notes and with indelible characters, speaks to us of God and of His omnipotence! Therefore, one who does not see Him is voluntarily blind!

Q. 185. When are two persons said to be equal?A. Two persons are said to be equal when one is in no way greater than or inferior to the other.Book of Heaven - April 12 A.D. 1929“My daughter, the Sanctity of Our Divine Being, the one Power of Our Will with which We are invested - in such away that, even though We are distinct as Persons, yet Our Will which operates in Us, which dominates, which rules, isalways one - Our equal, reciprocal and incessant Love, produce1 in Us the most profound adoration among the DivinePersons. So, everything that comes out of Us is but acts of profound adoration of all Our Divine Being.

Q. 186. How many persons are there in God?A. In God there are three Divine persons, really distinct, and equal in all things --the Father, the Son, and the HolyGhost.Book of Heaven - November 13 A.D. 1938Now, you must know that the acts done in my Will are inseparable, although distinct among themselves - distinct intheir sanctity, in their beauty, in love and in wisdom. They will carry the seal of the Most Holy Trinity, for while thedivine persons are distinct among each other, they remain inseparable: one is the Will, one the sanctity, one thebeauty, and so forth. In the same way, these acts will be inseparable yet distinct, enclosing within themselves the sealof the Supreme Holy Trinity, One and Three, Three and One. Even more, these acts will possess It as their own life. They will be the greatest glory for Us, and the whole of Heaven, in seeing in them our divine Lives being multiplied foras many acts performed in our Will."

Q. 187. What do "divine" and "distinct" mean?A. "Divine" means pertaining to God, and "distinct" means separate; that is, not confounded or mixed with anyother thing.

1 Read: “Sanctity, Power, Love, produce in Us…”.

13

Book of Heaven - May 13A.D. 1924“See, my daughter, the primary act of the Divine Persons is the perfect accord of Our Will. Our Will is so unified thatWill of One cannot be distinguished from That of the Other; so much so, that even though Our Persons are distinct –We are Three – Our Will is One, and this One Will produces a continuous act of perfect adoration among the DivinePersons – One adores the Other. This accord of Will produces equality of sanctity, of light, of goodness, of beauty, ofpower, of love, and establishes in Us the true reign of order and of peace, giving Us immense joys and happinesses, andinfinite beatitudes. So, the accord of the human will with the Divine is the first link of connection between Creator andcreature; and from it, the divine virtues descend into her as within a channel, producing in her true adoration andperfect love for her Creator. And rising from within that same channel of connection, she receives the different shadesof the divine qualities; and every time the soul rises in order to dive into this eternal Will, she is embellished by, andacquires, as many more varieties of divine beauty.

Q. 188. Is the Father God?A. The Father is God and the first Person of the Blessed Trinity.Book of Heaven - April 8 A.D. 1922I endowed man with will, intellect and memory. In the first shone my Celestial Father who, as primary actcommunicated His power, His sanctity and His height, through which He elevated the human will, investing it with Hisown sanctity, power and nobility, leaving all currents between Himself and the human will open, so that it might beenriched more and more with the treasures of my Divinity. Between the human will and the Divine there was neither‘yours’ nor ‘mine’, but everything was in common, with mutual accord. Man was Our image - Our own thing; so, heveiled Us. Our Life was to be his; therefore, as primary act He constituted his will free and independent, just as theWill of my Celestial Father was, as primary act. But how much has this will disfigured itself! Free as it was, itrendered itself the slave of most vile passions. Ah! it is the will that is the beginning of all the evils of man - it can nolonger be recognized. How it decayed from its nobility - it is disgusting to look at.

Q. 189. Is the Son God?A. The Son is God and the second Person of the Blessed Trinity.Book of Heaven - April 8 A.D. 1922Now, as second act, I, Son of God, concurred by endowing man with intellect, communicating to him my wisdom andthe knowledge of all things, so that by knowing them, he might enjoy them and delight in what is good. But, alas, whata bilge of vices is the intelligence of the creature! He has used knowledge to deny his Creator.

Q. 190. Is the Holy Ghost God?A. The Holy Ghost is God and the third Person of the Blessed Trinity.Book of Heaven - April 8 A.D. 1922Then, as third act, the Holy Spirit concurred by endowing him with memory, so that in remembering so many benefits,he might be in continuous currents of love, in continuous relations. Love was to crown him, embrace him andpermeate all of his life. But how saddened the Eternal Love remains! This memory remembers pleasures, riches, andremembers even to sin, while the Sacrosanct Trinity is cast out of the gifts which It gave to Its creature.

Q. 191. Do "first," "second," and "third" with regard to the persons of the Blessed Trinity mean that oneperson existed before the other or that one is greater than the other?A. "First," "second," and "third" with regard to the persons of the Blessed Trinity do not mean that one person was beforethe other or that one is greater than the other; for all the persons of the Trinity are eternal and equal in every respect. Thesenumbers are used to mark the distinction between the persons, and they show the order in which the one proceeded fromthe other.Book of Heaven - February 28 A.D. 1899And just as fire produces light and heat at the same time, in such a way that fire cannot be conceived without light andheat; in the same way, the Father cannot be conceived before the Son and the Holy Spirit, and vice versa, but all Threeof the Them have the same eternal beginning.

Q. 192. What do you mean by the Blessed Trinity?A. By the Blessed Trinity I mean one God in three Divine Persons.

Book of Heaven - April 13 A.D. 1922“How happy I am with your triple affirmation! Do not fear, these are nothing but reassurances, reaffirmations andconfirmations, so as to impress in you the triple seal of the Will of the Three Divine Persons. You must know that onewho lives in my Will must rise high - but so high as to live in the womb of the Sacrosanct Trinity. Your life and Oursmust be one; therefore it is necessary, it is decorous that you know where you are, and with whom you are; that youconform to whatever We do, and that, not by force, but willingly, with love and with full knowledge, you live in Ourwomb.

Q. 193. Are the three Divine Persons equal in all things?A. The three Divine Persons are equal in all things.Book of heaven - Volume 1As for example, in one hour, with my thought, I brought myself to Paradise, and I imagined the Most Holy Trinity: theFather, sending the Son upon earth; the Son, promptly obeying the Will of the Father; the Holy Spirit, consenting. Mymind was confounded in contemplating a mystery so great, a love so reciprocal, so equal, so strong among Themselvesand toward men; and then, the ingratitude of men, and especially my own. I would have remained there, not for onehour, but for the whole day; but an interior voice told me: “Enough – come and see other greater excesses of mylove.”

Q. 194. Are the three Divine Persons one and the same God?A. The three Divine Persons are one and the same God, having one and the same Divine nature and substance.Book of Heaven - November 13 A.D.

Q. 195. What do we mean by the "nature" and "substance" of a thing?A. By the "nature" of a thing we mean the combination of all the qualities that make the thing what it is. By the"substance" of a thing we mean the part that never changes, and which cannot be changed without destroying thenature of the thing.Book of Heaven - Volume 1To me, I think that Jesus has this way of speaking in order to adapt Himself to the human nature. It is not that Heneeds the word in order to make Himself understood, but in this way the soul understands more easily, and she canmanifest it to the confessor. In sum, Jesus acts like a most knowledgeable, wise and intelligent teacher, who possessesall sciences to the highest degree, and no one can equal Him. But since He finds Himself in the midst of disciples whohave not yet learned the first syllables of the alphabet, keeping all the other studies within Himself, He teaches thea,b,c to the disciples. Oh! how good is Jesus. He adapts Himself to the learned and speaks to them in a very highmanner, in such a way that in order to understand Him, they have to study well what He tells them. And He adaptsHimself to the ignorant, pretending to be, He Himself, a little bit ignorant; and He speaks in a low manner, in such away that no one may remain on an empty stomach from the lesson of this Divine Teacher.

The Queen of Heaven goes around through all the nations…

Book of Heaven - June 6 A.D. 1935… I continued to think about the Divine Will, and I prayed that It would hurry and that with Its Omnipotence that

can do everything, It would conquer all the obstacles and would make His Kingdom come and that His Will would Reignon earth as It does in Heaven. But while I thought this, before my mind, my sweet Jesus made seen so many mournfuland horrifying things, before which the hardest hearts are shaken, and the most obstinate knocked down. Everything wasterror and fright. I remained so afflicted as to feel myself dying, and I prayed that He would spare so many scourges.

And my beloved Jesus, as if He would have pity on my affliction, told me: “My daughter, courage, everythingwill serve for the Triumph of My Will. If I strike, it is because I want to heal. My Love is so much, that when I cannotconquer by way of Love and of Graces, I seek to conquer by way of terror and fright. The human weakness is so muchthat many times he does not care about My Graces, he is deaf to My Voice, he laughs at My Love. But it is enough totouch his skin, to remove the things necessary to natural life, that it abases his haughtiness. He feels so humiliatedthat he makes himself a rag, and I do what I want with him. Especially if they do not have a perfidious and obstinatewill, one chastisement is enough—to see himself at the brink of the grave—that he returns to Me into My arms.

“You must know that I always Love My children, My beloved creatures. I would eviscerate Myself in order tonot see them stricken, so much so that in the mournful times that will come, I have placed them all into the hands ofMy Celestial Mama. I have entrusted them to Her, so that She keeps them secure for Me under Her mantle. I will giveto Her all those that She will want, death itself will not have power over those who will be in the custody of My Mama.”

Now while He said this, my dear Jesus made me see with deeds that the Sovereign Queen descended from Heavenwith an indescribable Majesty and a Tenderness all Maternal, and She went around in the midst of creatures in all thenations and She marked Her dear children, and those who must not be touched by the scourges. Each one myCelestial Mama touched, the scourges had no power to touch those creatures. Sweet Jesus gave the right to HisMama of placing in safety whomever She pleased. How moving it was to see the Celestial Empress going aroundthrough all the parts of the world, that She took them in Her Maternal Hands, She entrusted them to Her bosom, she hidthem under Her Mantle, so that no evil could harm those whom Her Maternal Goodness kept in Her custody, guarded anddefended. O! if everyone could see with how much Love and Tenderness the Celestial Queen did this office, they wouldcry from consolation, and they would Love She who Loves them so much.

“…And if Jesus is chastising us, it is exactly because of this…”Lessons from the Letters of Servant of God Luisa Piccarreta

THE LITTLE DAUGHTER OF THE DIVINE WILL

Letter No. 133. To Federico AbreschDearest son in the Divine Volition,I answer to your most dear letter, and I pray that Jesus will give you ever new graces and light, in order to make everyoneunderstand the living in the Divine Will. Oh, how Jesus longs for it, and reaches the point of crying for the desire that weknow the Holy Divine Will, and that It reign and dominate in the whole world, because it is a decree of the Most HolyTrinity that the Divine Will be done on earth as It is in Heaven. Just as Creation and Redemption were decreed, so has theKingdom of the Divine Will upon earth been decreed. Therefore He will use all His art; He will take the creaturefrom all sides – with terrible chastisements, with amazing miracles – so that this may happen. He will reach suchextent that the first one in the sacrifice will be Jesus Himself: He will place Himself at the head of all our acts, so that allof them may flow in the sea of the Divine Will…

And if Jesus is chastising us, it is exactly because of this – because the creatures, especially on the religious side, instead of allowing Jesus to conquer them through love, as He wanted, have let themselves be taken throughchastisements… Poor Jesus, how much He suffers! And how He sighs and cries because the creatures do not prayHim, do not press Him to concede them the gift of living in the Will of God. And if He finds one, He takes her in Hisarms, He makes feasts, He feels like a victorious King who, although He had to suffer for six thousand years receivingwounds and defeats, has now finally made His first conquest. And He enjoys her triumphantly, calling all of Heaven tocelebrate His first victory. And while He makes feast, He places His Sanctity, His Love, His Light, His graces, at thecreature’s disposal, and gives her the right to her Celestial Fatherland… So, even being on earth, she possesses theCelestial Fatherland and can say: “All that is done in Heaven, I do on earth; even more, they do it enjoying anddelighting, I do it making new conquests, which serve to bring new joys to Heaven.”

Therefore, say to all that there is no greater thing, or a more amazing prodigy than to live in the Divine Will: we placeourselves at God’s disposal, and He places Himself at our disposal, to the point of making us form as many Jesuses for asmany acts as we do in His Holy Will.

The seas of the Divine Will are not yet known. If they were known, all would dive into the sea of the Divine Volition tolive perennial life in It. Therefore, let us pray and wait: Jesus has the centuries in His power; whatever He does not dotoday, He will do tomorrow, because today the minds are blind. Tomorrow He will find eyes which will be able to sustainthe Light of the Divine Will, and He will do all that He has not done today.

Sending you my regards, I leave you all in the immense sea of the Divine Will. The little daughter of the Divine Will.
