Medical research is building ahealthier local community

South western Sydney is forging an internationalreputation as a hub of outstanding healthand medical research thanks to the 2019Health Beyond Research & InnovationShowcase.This year’s showcase is shaping up to bea fantastic event and will return to TheWilliam Inglis – MGallery by Sofitel, Warwick Farm, on 5 and 6 June.Hundreds of staff and stakeholders are expected to attend the two-day showcase which highlights thefinest research and innovation projects underway in south western Sydney.

The theme of this year’s event is “Our Research = Healthier Communities’’ and will show how medical research in south western Sydney aims to improve patient care and save lives.

The program includes fascinating keynote speakers and the opportunity to form collaborations with research groups and colleagues.The only Australian woman who has competed at both Summerand Winter Olympic Games, Jana Pittman, a future doctor, isamong the select group of local, national and international speakersat the showcase.

Guests will also hear from Professor Iain McGregor who will discussmedicinal cannabis in Australia and its future use while ProfessorPaul Glare’s presentation will focus on pain in cancer survivors.

Other speakers include Professor Meera Agar, a palliative medicinephysician and clinician scientist, and Chair of the National MentalHealth Commission Lucy Brogden.

South Western Sydney Local Health District Chief ExecutiveAmanda Larkin said she was proud the research showcase had developed into a leading research event, attracting local, nationaland international interest.

“Each year I am fascinated and inspired to hear how research and innovation is shaping the future of health care,’’ Ms Larkin said.

I am also delighted that the showcase offers fantastic opportunitiesfor our staff to collaborate and form professional networks.

BUILDING COLLABORATIONS AND MAINTAINING WELLBEING AS A RESEARCHERDr Freya MacMillan and Dr Kate McBride

Dr Freya MacMillan is a Senior Lecturer in Interprofessional Health Sciences based in the School of Science and Health at Western Sydney University. Dr Kate McBride is a Lecturer in Population Health in the Translational Health Research Institute atWestern Sydney University. Dr Carolyn Ee is a Jacka Foundation Senior Research Fellow at NICM Health Research Institute, Western Sydney University, as well as a practicing GP. All three of these women are ECRs having gained their PhDs in the past5 years, who balance motherhood with work (with children ranging in age from 15 months to 18 years between them), and havemanaged to sustain rapidly rising research trajectories post PhD.

This workshop is targeted at clinicians and academics in the early stages of their research careers, who are facing challenges infinding a work life balance that allows for undertaken research productively. The session will focus on initiating and maintainingsuccessful research collaborations to ensure that ECRs can undertake research in a manageable and effective manner, whilstlooking after one's own health and wellbeing. Activities in this workshop will assist ECRs in: defining their mission; finding researchopportunities to progress with and others to avoid; identifying appropriate partners to collaborate with and ways of reachingout to form new collaborations; how to work effectively with others; how to maintain collaborations over the long term; andfinding strategies to look after their physical and mental health and reduce risk of burnout. Whether you are male, female, purelyacademic, clinical or a mix of both, with or without parental or caring responsibilities, with little or lots of research experience, ifyou are in the early stage of your research career, this is the workshop for you!

YOUR RESEARCH CAREER – WHERE’S IT HEADING AND WHAT’S YOUR ROLE IN IT?Ms Cecilia Stenstrom

Incorporating research into your career is individual, multi-faceted and always a work in progress. In effect it is a research projectand the research topic is you! This workshop will explore career development tools and strategic considerations in a practicaland relevant way. The workshop aims to assist participants to understand expectations of researchers, recognise that thereare career path alternatives and how to set a career plan and make it happen.

PANEL DISCUSSION: ‘THE HEALTHY HABITS OF A SUCCESSFUL GRANT WRITER’.Dr Johanna Barclay

A panel of researchers who have been previously successful in securing competitive research funding will provide a practicaldiscussion on how the panel members approach grant writing, and the tips and tricks that they employ to be successful. Thesession will be interactive with opportunities for the audience to pose questions to panel members.

WHAT’S THE BENEFIT AND HOW DO I USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN MY RESEARCH PROFILEMs Ursula Stroh

This workshop will aim to explain the benefits of using social media and also how to use it effectively to build a research profile.It will also provide helpful hints on how to maintain this profile without it encroaching on research time and how to ensure thebenefits outweigh the efforts. The workshop will look at why social media is important to researchers and how to promote research profiles.
