Mathematics Competitions

On Friday 23 June the Year 6 mathematicians were in action in the National Maths Team Championship. They travelled all the way to Wembley to face other regional winners. It was a very high standard, but the team put in a great performance to finish fourth out of the twelve competing teams. Pictured is the team of Tara Landry, Ollie Lucas, Isaac Searle and Ion Sfiraiala. The competition was split into two parts with the first 20 questions being ‘mental maths’ and the second half allowing the pupils pencil and paper for working out.Like the regional round they startedrelatively slowly, but came into their own on the later (more difficult) questions. All of the 12 teams had either won or finished as runner-up in their regional zone, so the standard was very high. The competition was always very close with just a few points separating the teams. I think at one point they slipped into 10th place, but clawed their way back and had reached 3rd before the final question. Sadly,

that question didn’t go their way and they dropped out of the bronze position to finish a very credible fourth. Overall, I am very pleased with the performance and all the pupils were a great credit to the school.

On Monday 26 June our Year 8mathematicians were also in action. Emily Bradshaw and Caspian Fowler teamed up with Yuka Machino and Angel Chen from Year 9 for the Millfield Maths Team.1800 teams had begun the competition and they had now got down to the final 88. The standard was incredibly high and the team worked very well together, but a mishap in the ‘Shuttle’ left us in 65th place.Congratulations to the team and thanks for their patience on the long trip to London and then back to Cornwall!Mr Turner

Pictured here are some of the works that Year 8 have produced during their time working on the ‘isms’ project.

Summer Concert

ABRSM Music Exam Results: Summer 2017Congratulations to all of these pupils for passing their practical music exams.

Year 5 Super Sunflowers5SCS have had great fun taking care of their sunflowers this term. The finalwinners for the tallest sunflowers were Fleur Kingsford and Henry Palmer who both grew sunflowers over 48cm tall. The class are now going to take their sunflowers home to plant in their gardens and enjoy watching them flower over the summer.

Last Friday saw the return of the annual Summer Concert, this year themed ‘A TV Supper’. Over 150 excited pupils, ranging in age from Year 2 all the way through to Year 8, performed a huge variety of music to a packed Assembly Hall. All pupils performed exceptionally well and should be very proud of their achievements. A special mention must go to the Year 2 violins, whomanaged to hold their nerve and perform beautifully in what must have seemed like an enormous occasion; the Year 4 Orchestra, who showed what can be achieved in just one year’s music lessons and to Year 6 pupil Sophie Harbridge, who premiered her composition “Lucky Cat” and conducted the orchestra herself. It was also lovely to see the junior and senior choir performing a Matilda medley together, culminating in a very moving rendition of “When I Grow Up”. All performers were treated to well deserved snacks of hot dogs, popcorn and ice cream after the concert. Congratulations to all pupils who took part and special thanks to all the music staff for their tireless efforts in bringing the concert together. Bravo!Mrs Sturges

Year 3 Get Fruity! As an end to their rainforest studies, 3MCJ sampled some rainforest produce in the form of tropical fruit. Fears were put to one side and everyone tried everything. Some reactions were great, some not so much! It was a fitting end to our topic looking at all the wonders that the rainforest provides, whilst pondering how to protect it for future generations.

Year 5 STOMP

Despite the let-down of missing out on the STOMP workshops this week, Year 5 showed great resilience and adaptability by going ahead and making up their own STOMP routines using everyday equipment such as pencils, books and hand and feet percussion. They showed exceptional team working skills as they devised their routines and then proudly performed them to Year 3 at the end of the day. This also meant that we could use the amazing scenery created by prop-making club over the term. Well done Year 5 and the prop makers!

Year 8 Speak Out Competition History

On Wednesday the final of the Year 8 Speaking and Listening competition took place in the recital hall. After their exams, the year group had to pick a song title then speak about something related to that title for the length of the song. Nine teams made the final and it was a verydifficult choice for the judges, Ms Hayes, Mr Birtwhistle and Mr Cageao. Topics ranged from dealing with family tragedy to bucket lists, to the unpredictable. Charlotte Taylor, Jo Maddock and Adelina Drauschke who came in third, talked about perceptions of women based on the song “Most Girls”. “A Little Less Conversation” saw Sam Curwen, Evan Jones and Benjamin Sanders secure second place with a very interesting talk about the balance between human interaction in person and via social media. Coming first due to their interesting content, excellent delivery and precise timing were Kaira Puri, Sophie Ackerley and Clarissa Jackson who talked about unusual foods around the world, based on the song, “Bon Appetit”. Well done to all of Year 8!

Year 7 completed their year’s worth of topics on the early medieval period by studying the development of castles in Britain. For this topic, the year group worked completely independently to research, produce and present a detailed project on their iPads. Everyone excelled themselves with this format, enjoying the freedom of being given time to really investigate the subject, and the results were superb. These pictures show example slides from the projects submitted by Katie White and Imogen Hodge. Mr Betts

Bushcraft CampTwo weeks ago, the Bushcraft Club decided to put the skills they have learnt to good use and set up camp for the night in the woods. Equipped only with a tarpaulin and a sleeping bag, they set up perfectly adequate shelters for the conditions and then cooked their food for the evening. The supper menu consisted of: self plucked and butchered pigeon breast seared on a willow stick over a roaring fire, dough twists baked over flames with garlic butter and for dessert, ember-baked banana with Mars. It was a sumptuous feast. Wild games were played, followed by hot chocolate and marshmallows before bed. Everyone slept for the whole night in their shelters and left the woods almost untouched the following morning.Notable quotes: “I really enjoyed pigeon legs”- Boris, “I’m not eating that” (he did)- Toby and “This is the best thing I’ve ever had” (banana and Mars)- Miles. Kit Car Race

Early in the morning on the 24 June, a small but dedicated team travelled to the Renishaw. It was dry and a pleasant temperature, perfect weather for racing. The racing started with the “drag race”, a 50m timed run against another car. It was uncertain how things were going to shape up during the first two disciplines, as the time keepers do not announce the times. However we had a feeling the performance was pretty good. Both Phoebe and Willow had the opportunity to have three goes each on the slalom. All performances on the slalom were executed very well by both girls, seemingly improving each run. After one of the runs Willow heard the timekeeper saying, “That’s the best run yet”.After lunch it was time for the ‘Sprint’ race, several laps round the very large car park. Willow drove a very dominant and controlled race in the first heat, finishing by more than half a lap ahead of the next car. This left Phoebe to drive the car in the final, against two other schools, for six laps. Our main rival produced an almost identical performance, so it was vital to get to the first bend before the other car. Unfortu-nately this didn’t happen and for the majority of the race the cars were nose to tail all the way. Phoebe was nearly able to catch up on the slight downhill straight but not enough to overtake or get to the bend first. On the penultimate lap there was just“a bit of daylight” to attempt a passing manoeuvre on the inside at the end of the straight. Dramatically the driver cut in and the vehiclescollided and the wheels locked together. With the third car catching up, the stewards leapt to try to separate the cars. They were freed just on time. Phoebe just had a sniff of a chance to get away first but the other car managed just to edge away in front. These positions remained until the end of the race. This was an incredibly exciting contest and credit must go to a very brave drive from Phoebe and the other racer, who unfortunately will remain anonymous. The Prizegiving was particularly thrilling as apart from the sprint race you don’t really know if you have won or not. It turned out to be an extremely enjoyable presentation as we had performed very well in all areas.Special Awards:Green bodywork design. Drag race - Second. Slalom - First. Sprint - Second. Overall winners - Millfield Prep School. Thanks go to Phoebe Van Der Welle and Willow Walsh for their enthusiasm, dedication and application throughout the year. Also to “Greenpower”, who organise these events so well.Mr Kemp

Year 5 Musical DoodlingYear 5 have been studying how music and art are interlinked in their inquiry topic this half term. They listened to a piece of music to inspire some doodling and this is their class masterpiece.

Liquid Nitrogen ShowDuring the last week of term, Year 7 and 8 pupils travelled to Millfield where thePhysics Department gave an engaging lecture and series of demonstrations to explore the properties of liquid nitrogen. While pupils were familiar with the idea that nitrogen is an unreactive gas that makes up about 78% of air in the atmosphere, they were less familiar with nitrogen as a liquid. Pupils were warned about the danger of cold burns before being shown the potent refrigeration effect of a substance with a boiling point of -196°C. Particle theory was discussed along with the Leidenfrost effect. Volunteers from the audience made ice cream for everyone. This chilled snack was a perfect accompaniment to the spectacular finale - a massive explosion caused by the increased pressure from warming a bottle of liquid nitrogen inside a dustbin of full of water. An excellent lecture! Thanks to Mr Hudson, Mrs Rees, Mr Leonard and Mr Wilson who were supported by Lower Sixth pupils and technicians. Please click on the video icon above to see a short film of the event.

Year 8 CampFrom Monday to Wednesday in the penultimate week of term, the Year 8’s travelled to Cornwall to spend three brilliant days in the glorious sunshine at the Eden Project. Pupils stayed in ‘Snooze Boxes’ which are ensuite, air conditioned pods which, in a former life, were shipping containers. Our meals took place in the Eden Project canteen before or after the public were on site. Nobody went hungry, as the huge cake portions for dessert were particularly popular. Some team building challenges were spread amongst the Eden Biome workshop and the excellent ‘Hangloose’ climbing activities. The highlight for many was the ‘Big Air’ activity and the zip wire. Englands longest zip wire spans the Eden Project hills and pupils were strapped in to enjoy the ride across the centre. There was something for everyone, with a good time being had by all. The Year 8 group tutor team would like to thank the Year 8s for their excellent company and behaviour on the trip. We hope you all had a great time.Mr French

Over the last week the Year 7s have experienced a wide range of extension activities including; Year 7 camp, an alcohol awareness work shop and they got to experience a morning at Millfield. As their Head of Year, I have been very proud of how they have approached these challenges, and they have represented themselves with an impressive level of maturity. At Millfield the pupils experienced a taster Design, Drama and Dance lesson followed by lunch in the main canteen. Thanks to all the teachers at Millfield school who helped organise this fantastic experience.Year 7 had a super time on camp and thoroughly enjoyed the experience . Although hot, it was great to be outside cooking, building fires, playing silly team games, caving, biking and walking.Mr Guthrie

Bake Off Final The contestants arrived punctually in the tent and then realised that the contest was in fact being held in the food tech room, we were so sure it had just been put up for the bake off competition! The equipment was organised, ingredients prepared, plans and sketches consulted. Frantic sponge making ensued, with 45 eggs and vast quantities of butter and sugar, as well as unprecedented numbers of ‘hundreds and thousands’, all playing their part. Three groups opted for a multilayered approach, one group favouring a raspberry and white chocolate flavour along with an Oreo laced sponge. Ella decided that the blue hands she had acquired from the food colouring being added to the fondant would undoubtedly enhance the look of her prom outfit, and Jo’s meringues looked so professional she could have easily worn them as a “cakinator”. Elena’s unicorn horn proved to be a tad tricky but in the end she was saved by the kind donation of a waffle cone from the Angles kitchen. Charlie kindly provided Mrs Henderson with enough cream cheese frosting for a lifetime of carrot cakes, and Jess is now quite the pro when it comes to tapping her “tapit” cutters!Angles were much cooler than their melting ice cream cake and were first to the table with the Danes and Saxons coming a close second. Meanwhile, in the Jutes kitchen a great deal of last minute frantic piping ensued they made it to the judging table just in time. It was wonderful to have our very own Mary and Paul along to judge. The cakes looked fantastic and every team successfully met the brief - the wow factor was definitely not in short supply. After tasting, the results were announced; a victory for Angles with a simple but well executed design. Danes were in second place with a delicious light sponge complete with surprise piñata style centre. Paul and Mary could notdecide between Saxons and Jutes and so a dead heat was declared.Well done to all the contestants for a very successful mornings work. You should be very proud of your efforts. Thank you to the judges - Mrs Bettesworth and Mr Boyd, and a huge thanks to Mrs Sanford for all her support, not tomention her time, throughout the competition.Mrs Henderson

The final scores were: Techincal Round Show Stopper Total Angles 11 + 10 = 21Saxons 12 + 6 = 18Danes 9 + 8 = 17Jutes 8 + 6 = 14

The Champion boys were up unusually early on Sunday morning (it’s amazing what they’ll do when school’s not involved!), to set off for the wilderness of the New Forest! Regardless of the activity, whether paddle boarding, kayaking or tackling the assault course, the day was filled with the boys falling or pushing each other into the water! Add in the boys other favourite activity, eating, and it was a very full and enjoyable last Sunday as members of Champion House! @championmps

The Chestnut boys had a very busy day on Sunday when they went on their end of term house trip. First stop was ‘Ultimate Assault’ in Bideford where the boys splashed, scrambled, crawled and bounced their way around a water based obstacle course. Next stop was Westward Ho for a picnic lunch and a #2minutebeachclean. It was astounding how much rubbish the boys collected in such a small space of time. The day continued at the cinema where they watched the new Transformers movie, and then to finish, they filled their tummies at an all you can eat buffet! Please click the icon above to watch a small movie of their day. @MPS_Chestnut

The whole of Hollies house headed off to North Devon for the annual house trip, a visit to the beach and a surf lesson together. The weather improved as the day went on and they all had a blast, attempting to catch some waves, some more successfully than others! They also tucked into some ice creams before games on the beach and a takeaway back in House. The girls were fabulous company and it was a wonderful final trip together. @MPS_Hollies

And so the day is finally upon us when Berewall girls say a fond farewell to the big white house that has been term time home for so many girls over the years. We are all very excited about the move and can’t wait to start a new chapter in our boarding lives. Bye bye big white house - we will miss you.@BerewallHouse

Charlie, Ewan and Hector worked out a good way to use up chocolate that had melted in the tuck cupboard. They made chocolate Rice Krispie cakes for the rest of the Edgarley Manor boys. Carrots not included! @EdgarleyManor

Golf - ISGA Junior Open

Golf - Millfield Open at Kingweston

A great day for the Millfield pupils at Kingweston. This year, we had over 60 pupils playing in the Millfield Open at Kingweston. A third of the field was made up of golfers from Millfield Prep, representing the biggest entry of pupils into the event in recent years. A strong contingent from schools from around the UK made it a very competitive event.Nathaniel Stowell, Andrew Penney, Joseph Cox, Daksh Talwar, James Stuart, William Thomas and Aleksandra Karnoz played in their first 18 hole school events and played very well. Oliver Scriven played steadily to be 1 point behind Lowen Stephens for the Under 10 event. As the back 9 progressed Oliver chipped in at the 17th to win the Under 10s with Lowen just behind in 3rd.In the Under 12s Calum Jesset and Joaquin Lluch Alzaga played well but Hugo Wu managed to finish runner up with an excellent performance. The Under 13s was another age group where Millfield were in contention. Michael McNee played well and finished 3rd just losing out on count back but with a brilliant back 9 Sam Pepler was the Under 13s winner. The girls championship always looked like it would be a battle between Patience Rhodes and Harriet Lockley. Harriet was joint leader for the overall event tied with Freddie Turnell and Patience had some catching up to do on the back 9. Patience improved on the back 9 but it wasn’t enough to catch Harriet who became the Girls Champion. Freddie, who has had an amazing couple of months, shot 1 over gross on the back 9 to seal a victory by 5 shots and another trophy for his growing collection. Patience, Freddie and Harriet also secured the team victory to finish another successful day. Well done to all the pupils and great to see such large numbers playing confidently out on the golf course.

Results for MPS Golfers:Overall Boys Champion: Freddie Turnell - 49pts Overall Girls Champion: Harriet Lockley - 44pts 2nd Girl: Patience Rhodes - 36ptsTeam Winners: Millfield Prep - Freddie Turnell, Harriet Lockley & Patience Rhodes - 129ptsU13 section Winner: Sam Pepler - 36pts2nd in the U12 section: Hugo Wu - 29ptsU10 section Winner: Oliver Scriven - 27ptsMany thanks to Dave Hill, Matt Turner, Jim Boyd, Carolyn Bettesworth, Max Senior & Stuart Wells for marking on the day and to Karen Nicholls for acting as the starter. Finally, a massive well done to Ian Vibert for organising the event and for coaching our golfers to atremendous set of results.

A new course record!2 National Champions and a great team victory! Freddie Turnell, Patience Rhodes andHarriet Lockley headed to the ISGA Junior Open at Sunningdale Heath Golf Club to compete against the top boys and girls at under 14s in the UK. The competition was a gross medal and a shotgun start, so allplayers started and finished at the same time. As the round progressed, it was clear Freddie was having a very good day and both girls were playing well. Harriet was the 1st to finish and played steadily to shoot 10 over to secure a 3rd place finish in the girls championship. Patience played consistently to finish tied in 1st place shooting 7 over and after count back, became the ISGA Girls National Champion for 2017. Freddie was the last Millfield player to make it back to the clubhouse and the big smile said it all as he had shot his first under par round and broken the junior course record finishing 2 under par gross! Freddie won by 8 shots and is the ISGA Boys National Champion. These excellent scores meant Millfield secured a 9 shot victory in the team event to top off an excellent day of golf.

Athletics - ESAA Cup Finals

Athletics - IAPS National Finals

Tuesday 4 July was the final event of the athletics season with our biggest ever team making the trip to Birmingham for the IAPS finals. It is a high pressure environment with the athletes being treated like the professionals at a big event. They have to check in before their event and are held in a grand stand before being taken to the races. This ramps up the pressure and our athletes have to stay cool and focused. In fact it would seem that the parents were more nervous than our athletes! We had high hopes for a good day and the team did not disappoint. If it was easy to win or get on the podium it would not be worth doing but below are the athletes who made it. We also had athletes who achieved personal bests. A great time to achieve their own ‘worldrecord’!Maisie Jeger now has three gold medals. Amirah Weightman Dauda broke the long standing high jump record with a huge 1m 59cm. Jadiel Wahab dominated the shot competition. Kizzi Reed won her hurdles final by 0.06 of a second (a clear victory!) The Year 8 girls relay team of Maisie Jeger, Vienna Hounsham, Clarissa Jackson and Charlotte Taylor had a clean run to victory and Daisy Pellow survived a late challenge to hold on for gold in the 800m. Jack Amor, Lydia Louw and Grace Olding also medalled in the 1500m, 1500m and shot respectively.A great day for the team and a really good way to round off a busy season. We say farewell to our Year 8s and wish them all the best for their future and we now look to the remaining athletes to continue to drive athletics at the Prep School forward.Huge thanks to Mrs Wood for her tireless team management and problem solving on the day and to the parents who drove from all corners of the country to ferry the team in to compete.Mr Duke

After an emotional Friday where our leavers departed the Prep School for the final time, twelve of our athletes arrived in Oxford for the final of the English Schools Cup. This is the top 12 schools in the country and competition is the toughest we face all year. Our pupils are very lucky to be given opportunities in a huge variety of different sports and activities. We are competing against schools who have a much more specialised approach. Our team of 12 competed to the best of their ability on the day. The end of our term is a frenetic fortnight and some of the performances were not quite at the level that they had competed at before, as they were mentally drained with nothing left to give. We also had a few niggling injuries and illness to contend with. Performances are allocated points and whilst it was tremendous to see the Millfield vest finishing first it was more important that it was fast, high or far!Our parents were also mentally exhausted but managed to dig deep to be the loudest people on the side lines and their support spurred on our ‘twelve’.As regional champions we were ranked in the top five going in and we hoped to maybe bump up a little. If we had had a great day then we may have squeezed onto the podium but it proved to be a challenge too far and we finished sixth on the day.A fantastic achievement from the girls. They can be very proud of how well they represented the Millfield Athletics Department. To round off the event with a convincing win in the relay showed what competitors they are. Inter House Rounders

Years 5 and 6This year the two year groups combined and due to the drizzly start was played on the hard courts or Astro. The games were limited to 20 balls and 1 innings. The girls still all got stuck in and played with good spirit. The results were as follows:1st Danes 2nd Saxons 3rd Jutes 4th Angles

Somerset County Under 13 Cricket Competition 2017After the tremendous performance at Oxford on the previous Wednesday, there was always the danger that the final of the County competition would feelanti-climactic and a consequentunder-performance would ensue. Having been crowned as the best Prep Schoolcricket team in the country, pre-eminence within the home county surely was aforegone conclusion? Such was the potential banana skin that this fixture represented. However, the squad of 2017 had made impressive progress in the previous months and this match against Taunton School was a repeat of an earlier fixture when MPS had been convincing winners. Taunton would surely be looking for revenge! Cal Harvey won the toss and elected to bat. In a 25 over match a rate of 6 runs per over results in a score of 150. Such a total on a small pitch with a fast outfield would by no means guarantee victory and thus it was encouraging that Joe Eckland and Michael

McNee opened the batting and proceeded to belabour some rather wayward bowling to many parts of the outfield. Thus a cracking early rate was set yet soon wickets also began to fall. A pattern was set whereby batsmen would play some good shots, appear to be in command of the bowling and then show true sportsmanship by giving their wicket away! Joseph Eckland managed to get over the 50 mark before being run out in a show of benevolent generosity.A final score of 165 was good but by no means out of reach. Bowling and fielding had to be good if the match was going to be won.Cal Harvey produced an excellent spell of slow-left-arm bowling, restricting the scoring and putting pressure on the batsmen. He was ably supported by Dominic Kelly and Ollie Harrison yet the Taunton score continued to mount and the run rate was by no means impossible. Michael McNee bowled an excellent spell and managed to defy gravity in order to take a fantastic catch off his own bowling. This was potentially the turning point of the match as the required rate began to increase towards double figures of runs per over. Anotherdangerous opponent was bowled by Alex Painter with a fantastic yorker and the final over was reached with 36 runs needed for victory.India-Rose Owen was never going to be the ’Malcolm Nash’ to a Taunton version of Gary Sobers and consequently the County Shield was retained by Millfield Prep School for yet another year.It is a reflection of the potential and progress of this squad that to win this match only a quotidian performance was all that was required. A true team effort where the overall effectiveness of the side was based on the skills and attitudes of all eleven players rather than the stellar successes of just one or two.Mr Wynn

Years 3 and 4Rounders is played during their games session and each house plays each other. The games were all really close and all played with great enthusiasm and energy. The results were as follows:1st Saxons 2nd Angles 3rd Jutes 4th Danes

ChessOn Tuesday, the MPS Chess team faced St. Benedict’s. This is always a closely contested fixture and so it proved once again. St. Benedict’s won the first match 6-5, but the MPS team put in a massive effort in the second round to win 7-4 and take the contest 12-10. Fittingly, it was left to board 1 Isaac Searle to win the crucial game that took us over the line. Congratulations to all the team on an excellent performance.Mr Turner

This week...I am so proud of our children! They sang their hearts out for two packedperformances of ‘The Moon Thieves’ and Year 2 really stole the show with their great acting, comic timing and clearnarration of the story. It’s always sowonderful to see everyone pullingtogether to produce such a great end result. Well done to all involved. This week we also visited the senior school for an amazing Liquid Nitrogen Roadshow. The children loved every aspect of this event, but the grand finale and highlights were when the bottles full of liquid nitrogen exploded and the balls catapulted sky high.Massive thanks must go to Mr Hudson and his science team for allowing us to attend this event, as it really did engage andeducate, whilst enthusing the children with the excitement of science. What a great way to encourage young children to want to study the subject in the future! I am sure it is something they will remember for a very long time.Mrs Blasdale

The Moon Thieves Summer Production

Pre-Prep Sports DayOn Tuesday 4 July all of the Pre-Prep children took part in their annual sports day. There were the traditional running races, the less traditional ‘walking through the jungle’ and ‘take your pet to the vet’ races, and of course, the hard-fought parents race. What a lovely way to spend the afternoon. Click the camera icon to see more photos.

Year 2 ‘Moving On’ AssemblyOn Wednesday we said a fond farewell to our Year 2 leavers. We wish them luck with the next stage of their education.

All of the Pre-Prep children worked extremely hard, learning their lines and perfecting their acting skills, to produce a wonderful performance of ‘The Moon Thieves’ last Tuesday and Wednesday. Please click on the camera icon to see more photos.

Reception

This week the Reception class have been looking at eyes. Mrs Paine brought in a model of the eye and the children got to

take it apart and analyse it in detail.

Pre-SchoolTrying to stay cool in all that glorious summer sun was quite difficult. So out came the ice cubes, the tuff spots full of water, bubbles and most importantly ice creams! Pre-School children had a great time splashing about and even decided to get inside the bubbles as well!As we draw a close on this academic year the Pre-School teachers would like to say a HUGE thank you to the children for making Pre-School such fun and for creating lasting memories! We wish all the Frogs good luck in their Reception classes and look forward to the Tadpoles returning as Frogs and the Tiddlers turning into Tadpoles!

Have a great summer.

Liquid Nitrogen ShowDuring the last week of term, Pre-Prep and Year 7 and 8 pupils travelled to Millfield where the Physics Department gave an engaging lecture and series of demonstrations to explore the properties of liquid nitrogen. While the older pupils were familiar with the idea that nitrogen is an unreactive gas that makes up about 78% of air in the atmosphere, they were less familiar with nitrogen as a liquid. Pupils were warned about the danger of cold burns before being shown the potent refrigeration effect of a substance with a boiling point of -196°C. Particle theory was discussed along with the Leidenfrost effect. Volunteers from the audience made ice cream for everyone. This chilled snack was much appreciated by Pre-Prep and was a perfect accompaniment to the spectacular finale - a massive explosion of coloured balls caused by the increased pressure from warming a bottle of liquid nitrogen inside a dustbin of full of water. An excellent lecture. Thanks to Mr Hudson, Mrs Rees, Mr Leonard and Mr Wilson who were supported by Lower Sixth pupils and technicians. Please click on the camera icon above to watch a short film of the event.

Trip to MontacuteOn Monday the Pre-Prep children had a lovely day out at Montacute House.

Year 1 Pets R Us!This week the children in Year 1 were given a group challenge. Each group was given a ‘pet’ to look after. The pets included a dog, a cat, a rabbit and a horse. They had to decide what items they would need, in order to care for their pet. They also had to think about what they needed to do, to ensure that their pet was properly cared for. They worked really well in their groups, identifying the needs of their animals. Each group then nominated a spokesperson to feed their ideas back to the rest of the Year group.

Year 2Year 2 had an exciting time last week. They found out about the Porch Family and looked around Edgarley House. While they were there, the children drew pictures of the statues around the fire place. They found out that many of the sculptures were taken from the Abbey. After looking around the house, we went down to the Hermitage. Here the children found lots of stone which had come from the Abbey. They really enjoyed using a map to walk around the school site and they named many of the buildings using the key. Also, congratulations to all of Year 2 for their wonderful performances of ‘The Moon Thieves’. They worked very hard and did a fantastic job.

It was the nicest place to be when the sun was blazing down at 30+ degrees! There were lots of Julia Donaldson book inspired activities for the children to enjoy including: aGruffalo hunt, making superworms, making stickmen, creating a potion and mini broomsticks and much more. The children also enjoyed roasting a marshmallow on the fire and then turning it into a ‘smore’. Some of the children REALLY enjoyed eating these as well!
