This was the first ever La Paz Summit, and it was exciting to worship and learn alongside so many people from Pasadena Covenant! Throughout the weekend we heard many different speakers and attended numerous  workshops. A variety of subjects were covered, including homelessness, community violence, community health, education, and immigration reform. Woven into each session was the uncomfortable truth that the system we live in is indeed a broken one. No matter how much  we learn about the injustices around us, and no matter how much we care about making things right, we cannot ignore the societal factors that prevent the most vulnerable members of our society from succeeding. To illustrate this, a couple of the speakers took a familiar saying and expanded upon it. We’ve heard it said that if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; if you teach a man to fish, he is able to eat for life. The speakers challenged us by asking the question, “What if there is no access to the pond?” What if, despite our best efforts to equip people with the skills they need to succeed, there are still societal barriers that make healing and equality impossible? This certainly is challenging to the Church, and is a reminder that as Christians, we have a mandate to recognize and confront the injustices that we encounter on a daily basis. The La Paz Summit invited us into that uncomfortable place of truth, and my prayer is that we would not forget this once the Summit is but a distant memory. May we be a people who listen for the Spirit’s leading as we do God’s work here on earth, and may Pasadena Covenant be a church that will boldly respond to deep brokenness of this world. May 2012

During the weekend of April 20-21, Pasadena Covenant brought nearly 40 adults, students,

and children to the La Paz Justice Summit. This was the first ever La Paz Summit, and it was

exciting to worship and learn alongside so many people from Pasadena Covenant!

Throughout the weekend we heard many different speakers and attended numerous

workshops. A variety of subjects were covered, including homelessness, community violence, community health, education, and immigration reform. Woven into each session was the

uncomfortable truth that the system we live in is indeed a broken one. No matter how much

we learn about the injustices around us, and no matter how much we care about making things

right, we cannot ignore the societal factors that prevent the most vulnerable members of our

society from succeeding.

To illustrate this, a couple of the speakers took a familiar saying and expanded upon it. We’ve

heard it said that if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; if you teach a man to fish, heis able to eat for life. The speakers challenged us by asking the question, “What if there is no

access to the pond?” What if, despite our best efforts to equip people with the skills they need

to succeed, there are still societal barriers that make healing and equality impossible?

This certainly is challenging to the Church, and is a reminder that as Christians, we have a

mandate to recognize and confront the injustices that we encounter on a daily basis. The La

Paz Summit invited us into that uncomfortable place of truth, and my prayer is that we would

not forget this once the Summit is but a distant memory. May we be a people who listen for the

Spirit’s leading as we do God’s work here on earth, and may Pasadena Covenant be a church

that will boldly respond to deep brokenness of this world.

Cross-Cultural Communication Specialists’

Praise & Prayer Requests

Tim and Wakako Clark are cross-cultural workers who serve in Japan with Asian Access, a mission now in

strategic partnership with Serving in Mission (SIM). They are

working with Alpha Japan to establish Relationship Central

Japan, which includes The Marriage Course, The Parenting

Children Course, and the Parenting Teenagers Course. The

Clarks seek to equip Japanese Churches and church planters

to reach many, and impact society through these Courses.

Wakako, and another mother from their church started Ko-

sodate Salon, a playgroup which meets twice a month to

provide friendship and a “mom’s chat time” which give themoms a change to talk about anything and everything and

encourage each other. Through this ministry they have met

several families who live close to the church and are praying many of them will attend the upcoming marriage

and parenting courses.

Praises:

A matching grant doubles donations given to Asian Access for the Clarks through the end of May

For new friends made through the Ko-sodate Salon playgroup

The Clarks have known Chitose for three years, and during that time she began attending various events at

the church, attended the Marriage Course, joined a Bible Study group and finally believed in Jesus last

December. She is now a member of their cell group.

Prayer request:

The Clarks are prepping Marriage Course Introduction Seminars, one in Sapporo on June 1 and one in

Okinawa on July 6. Please pray these seminars will lead to many churches beginning to run the course.

Pray for God’s leading as they form new relationships as Makoto starts attending a once-a-week two-year-

olds’ class at a nearby preschool with 700 students.

Pray for the Clarks as they work with ministry partners to develop vision for the growth of Relationship

Central Japan. Pray for growth in their team of advisors, translators and trainers and that many Christian

and non-Christian couples throughout Japan will be deeply impacted through the ministry.

Update from Jim Gustafson’s work with the Global Development Network (GDN)/Sustainable Development

Research Foundation (SDRF) Partnership: The SDRF recently purchased 3 acres of land that will serve as the

new home for the Center for HIV/AIDS Community (CHAC). Please pray for the funds to help construct a

new CHAC Center to provide temporary housing for CHAC members in time of need (a hostel) and to build

a clinic to address the medical needs of local people. Funds are also needed to set up a new fish farm to

provide livelihood training in raising fish and serve as a disseminator center for fish fingerlings which CHAC

members will raise out in floating cages in surrounding ocean areas (lagoons, estuaries, etc.).

The Clarks: Wakako, Hiroki, Makoto, and Tim

Midweek Programs

FLOW (High School): Wednesdays, 7-9 pm

G.O.A.T. (Middle School): Thursdays, 6-8 pm

Our midweek program for high school and middle school involves large community time, worship, and small

groups. Join us this winter and spring as we dive into Faith in Action, a small group study designed to

introduce students to holistic faith, focusing on topics such as racial reconciliation and economic stewardship.

Our format includes small group night out, game nights, and dinners! Make sure your on the email list to

receive the most up-to-date information!

“Sticky Faith”: How to Nurture a Faith that Lasts

Parent Group • Thursdays 6-8 pm • Corner House

Every other week March 29 - June 7th / childcare available by reservation only

How do we as a church or as parents nurture a faith that lasts? The stats aren’t always encouraging: recent

studies suggest that 40-50% of kids connected to a church youth group will fail to “stick” with their faith

through college.

PCC Student & Children’s Ministries wants to partner with parents to turn those sobering stats around.

One way we’re doing that is by partnering with Fuller Youth Institute (FYI) to take advantage of their

extensive research in faith development that lasts (“sticky faith”).

If you are a parent or grandparent of any age child/youth, or are interested in what PCC can do to nurture

“sticky faith”, we invite you to join us on Thursday nights to pray, research, plan, and support one another in

this important task. Copies of the book Sticky Faith based on Fuller’s groundbreaking research will be

available for purchase ($10), and will help shape our discussion.

Saturday Servants (Middle School)

Saturday, May 5 • Time TBDThe middle schoolers are going to be working on a church-wide project connected with the La Paz social jus-

tice conference. People from our church were asked to bring donations of socks, tolietries, and other items

needed to make necessities kits to hand out to the homeless that we encounter. The goal is to produce 400

kits on May 5. Kits will be made in gallon-sized ziplocks and can be kept in cars, purses, etc. to hand out and

will be available for the congregation to purchase at $5. The proceeds will be donated to The Bad Weather

Shelter. This is another great opportunity for the entire church to pull together to do justice as a community!

Pismo Beach Retreat (High School + 8th Graders)

Saturday, May 18 - 20 • $80Graduating 8th graders and high schoolers will be heading to Pismo Beach for camping, Capture the Flag in

the dunes, chilling on the beach, singing around the campfire, devotions...Sounds pretty awesome, right?

you! We’ll meet in the Edge Lounge upstairs on the 2nd floor of the gym bldg. Group leaders

are Suzi Edwards and Doug Berry .

 Journey to the Cross

Pasadena Covenant Church children went on a 7 week Journey to the Cross, using art, music,

Scripture, journaling and meditation to ponder the events leading up to Jesus’ death and

resurrection. This all culminated on Easter Sunday with six stations where they heard each

story retold from a first-person perspective, and had a chance to engage in activities to respond

to each event.

 Welcome Newcomers!

If you started coming to our church within the past year and would like to have the opportunity to meet

others from our congregation and staff, and to ask questions about our faith community in an informal

setting, please join us for our Newcomers Lunch, Sunday, June 10 from 12:15 - 1:30 at the Corner

House (on the Northwest corner of Santa Barbara and Lake Avenue). All family members are wel-

come! In order to plan for the food, your RSVP is greatly appreciated to Marianne Hill, 626-798-2097

or [email protected]

Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions, and also if you will be bringing pre-schoolers so

that we can plan food and activities for them.

Bereavement Ministry

As we move closer to having a Bereavement ministry up and running at Pasadena Covenant, we want to

make sure that the shape of the ministry not only reflects the values we want to stand by, but also the

people the ministry will impact. For that reason, we would like to invite you to participate in a one-time

event that will help us shape the future of the ministry. At the event we will be facilitating a discussion

around the Bereavement ministry and how it will function in the future.

You may think that you don't have much to offer or bring to the discussion, but we would encourage

you to reconsider. While the Bereavement ministry is being created for those who grieve in general,

there are specifics to your situation that can help us better serve you now and others in the future.

Please consider joining us on Thursday, May 17th, 7pm in the Corner House. The event including des-

sert should take no longer 2 hours. Please let us know if you plan to attend. Phillip Davis,

[email protected] or Jim Tyberg, [email protected]
