New Year Message | Neujahrsnachricht

2018 Her Excellency Ms. Jameela Ali Khalid, Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to Germany

It is with great pleasure that I convey my new year

greetings to everyone on behalf of the Maldivian

Embassy in Germany, Berlin. The year 2017 has

truly been a delightful year. I had the honour to

meet the President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and

Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel at different

events, officials of the Federal Foreign and other

and members of the German Bundastag. In

addition I also made new friends among

Ambassadors and from the business community

in Germany.

It was definitely a pleasure and exciting to meet

members of the Maldivian German families living

in Germany. I would like to take this opportunity

to wish you and your families wellbeing,

happiness and prosperity. I hope that in 2018

bilateral relations between Maldives and

Germany will be even more productive and the

encounters between our nations will increase.

Es ist mir eine große Freude, Ihnen im Namen

der Botschaft der Malediven in Deutschland,

Berlin, meine Neujahrsgrüße zu übermitteln.

Das Jahr 2017 war wirklich ein schönes Jahr. Ich

hatte die Ehre, Bundespräsident Frank-Walter

Steinmeier und Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel

bei verschiedenen Veranstaltungen, Beamten

des Auswärtigen Amts und Mitgliedern des

Bundestags, zu treffen. Außerdem habe ich neue

Freunde unter den Botschaftern und aus der

Geschäftswelt in Deutschland gefunden.

Es war auf jeden Fall ein Vergnügen und

aufregend, Mitglieder der in Deutschland

lebenden maledivischen deutschen Familien zu

treffen. Ich möchte diese Gelegenheit nutzen, um

Ihnen und Ihren Familien Wohlbefinden, Glück

und Wohlstand zu wünschen. Ich hoffe, dass die

bilateralen Beziehungen zwischen den

Malediven und Deutschland im Jahr 2018 noch

produktiver werden und die Begegnungen

zwischen unseren Nationen zunehmen werden.

Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Maldives in Munich

On February 08th 2018, the inauguration ceremony of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Maldives took place in Munich Giesinger Bräu. The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Head of the European Politics and International Relations of the state of Bavaria Mr. Micheal Köller, the members of the diplomatic and consular corps, accredited in Bavaria, the representatives of the tourism trade and cultural elite of the city. Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Federal Republic of Germany H.E Jameela Ali Khalid attended the official opening event. In her speech Her Excellency warmly welcomed the guests and congratulated the Honorary Consul Mr. Andreas Witte and informed the distinguished attendees of the event about the main directions of his work and briefed about the close diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries. She also highlighted in her speech about the challenges and vulnerabilities of climate change and importance of maintaining a sustainable ecotourism industry in Maldives. Her Excellency briefed about the latest positive German tourist arrival statistics

and she defined Maldives as a young democracy having its own fair share of pains and gains. Honorary Consul Mr. Andreas Witte highlighted the many parallels in tourism development between the Free State of Bavaria and the Maldives. Bavaria has a long tradition to host guests from virtually all nations. Like the Maldivian people, Bavarians are very hospitable and interested in foreign cultures. Despite the many setbacks during the transition of Bavaria from a monarchy to a modern state, the people have succeeded in creating a flourishing

tourism industry, contributing a significant share of the Bavarian GDP. Today, Bavaria is the most successful state of Germany. Mr. Andreas Witte wants to enable representatives of both sides to share their wisdom and knowledge in order to further improve the friendship between the two nations.

Republik Malediven in

München

Am 08. Februar 2018 fand die Einweihungsfeier des Honorarkonsulats der Republik Malediven im Giesinger Bräu in München statt. An der Feier nahmen der stellvertretende Leiter der Europäischen Politik und Internationale Beziehungen des Freistaates Bayern Micheal Köller, die in Bayern akkreditierten Mitglieder des diplomatischen und konsularischen Corps, die Vertreter der Tourismuswirtschaft und die kulturelle Elite der Stadt teil. Botschafter der Republik Malediven in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland H.E Jameela Ali Khalid nahm an der offiziellen Eröffnungsveranstaltung teil. In ihrer Ansprache beglückwünschte und begrüßte Ihre Exzellenz

den Honorarkonsul Andreas Witte herzlich und informierte die Teilnehmer über die Hauptrichtungen seiner Arbeit und informierte über die engen diplomatischen und wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Ländern. In ihrer Rede hob sie die Herausforderungen und Anfälligkeiten des Klimawandels und die Wichtigkeit der Aufrechterhaltung einer nachhaltigen Ökotourismus-Industrie auf den Malediven hervor. Die Botschafterin informierte über die neuesten positiven deutschen Tourismusstatistiken und sie definierte die Malediven als eine junge Demokratie, die ihren eigenen gerechten Anteil an Schmerzen und Gewinnen hatte. Honorarkonsul Andreas Witte hob die vielen Parallelen in der Tourismusentwicklung zwischen dem Freistaat Bayern und den Malediven hervor. Bayern hat eine lange Tradition, Gäste aus nahezu allen Nationen zu begrüßen. Wie die Malediven sind Bayern sehr gastfreundlich und interessiert an fremden Kulturen. Trotz der vielen Rückschläge während des Übergangs Bayerns von einer Monarchie zu einem modernen Staat ist es den Menschen gelungen, eine florierende Tourismusindustrie zu schaffen, die einen wesentlichen Anteil am bayerischen BIP hat. Heute ist Bayern das erfolgreichste Bundesland. Herr Andreas Witte möchte es Vertretern beider Seiten ermöglichen, ihre Weisheiten und ihr Wissen zu teilen, um die Freundschaft zwischen den beiden Nationen weiter zu verbessern.

German Reunification Day, 3 October

H.E. Ms. Jameela Ali Khalid, Ambassador of Maldives to Germany attended the 27th anniversary

of Germany's peaceful reunification, the official

celebrations took place in the city of Mainz, where

some 500,000 guests including German Chancellor

Angela Merkel and Norbert Lammert, the outgoing

president (speaker) of the Bundestag and President

Steinmer participated at the event.

The COP23 Climate Change Summit in

Bonn H.E. Ms. Jameela Ali Khalid, Ambassador of Maldives to Germany attended the opening session

for High Level Climate Talk at COP23 in Bonn from

14-17 November 2017 with the Maldives

Environment Ministry Delegation headed by Mr.

Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Environment and

Energy.

Dusseldorf Boot Fair 2018 H.E Ms. Jameela Ali Khalid, Ambassador of

Maldives to Germany, attended the BOOT 2018

held in Dusseldorf, Germany from 20th – 28th

January 2018. The Maldivian delegation was

headed by Mr. Haris Mohamed, Acting Managing

Director of MMPRC, 15 officials from seven

companies represented Maldives this year at the

fair.

Bremen H.E Ms. Jameela Ali Khalid,

Germany, attended the annual event in Bremen from February 22-24 February 2018 organized by the Asia Pacific Group. “Annual OAV Bremen E. V. 117 Stiftungsfest”

Tourism Statistics

The Maldives hit records in December 2017

welcoming 143,041 tourists with a robust

increase of 19.7% compared to December

2016. With this better than expected

performance, the year 2017 ended with

triumph and accomplishments for the

Maldives. The set targets for 2017 were

reached and exceeded as the total arrivals for

the year summed up to 1,389,542 with an

increase of 8% compared with that of 2016.

Europe remained as the market leader

strengthening its hold with impressive 46.5%

shares. The region registered a healthy 12.4%

increase in 2017 compared to that of 2016. All

the sub-regions within Europe recorded

positive growths in 2017 with Central/Eastern

Europe and Southern Europe leading the

growth within the region at the end of 2017,

posting a sharp 23.9% increase and 21.2%

increase respectively. Asia and the Pacific

followed behind with 44.4% shares. Along with

strong performances from the three sub-

regions, South East Asia (21.4%), Oceania

(18%) and South Asia (10.5%), and the steady

recovery recorded from North East Asia during

the last quarter of 2017, Asia and the Pacific

ended the year 2017, with a significant increase

of 3.2% compared to 2016. At the third position

was the swiftly increasing Americas region

accounting for 4.5% shares of arrivals to the

Maldives in 2017. The region posted a healthy

22.8% growth rate for the year 2017 compared

with that of 2016. Middle East took 3.5% shares

of arrival to the Maldives in 2017. This region

however, posted a negative 4.2% for the year

due to the sharp declines recorded during the

course of the year. Africa region although

contributed 1.1% to the total arrivals of the

Maldives in 2017, registered the best results for

the year with a sharp 36.5% compared to that

of 2016.

Looking at individual markets, China remained

at the top position taking hold of 22.1% shares.

The market however, recorded a negative

growth of 5.5% in 2017 compared to that of

2016. Nonetheless the Chinese market showed

signs of recovery posting strong positive

growths during the last two months of 2017.

Germany firmly maintained its position at 2nd

place with 8.1% shares and a solid 5.5%

increase compared to 2016. U.K, accounting for

7.5% market shares, was the third largest

market to the Maldives in 2017. The U.K market

which performed with negative results through

July to September 2017, bounced back ending

the year with a significant 2.1% increase. Italy

was at the 4th position strengthening its hold

with 6.4% shares. The Italian market was one

of the best performers in terms of growth

rate during the year 2017 with a healthy

24.8% increase for the year. Indian market

performed well in 2017 recording a double

digit growth of 24% and stayed put at the 5th

position claiming 6% of the market shares.

Russian market captured 4.3% shares of

arrivals to remain at the 6th position at the

end of 2017. Russia was the best performer

among the top ten markets in terms of

growth rate with a solid 33% increase for the

year 2017 compared with 2016. French

market ended the year at the 7th position

with 3% shares. The market did extremely

well during the last three months of the 2017,

resulting in a significant growth of 4.6% for

the year 2017 compared with 2016. Japanese

market was at the 8th position at the end of

2017 with 3% shares and a growth rate of

3.1%. USA market ended the year 2017 with

a robust 20% increase compared with that of

2016. With a market share of 2.8% USA

remained at the 9th place. Korean market

made a significant come back in 2017

registering a healthy 17.7% increase. The

market contributed 2.5% to the total arrivals

to the Maldives in 2017.

On the supply side, a 10% increase in

registered bed capacity was recorded for the

year 2017. There were a total of 736

registered establishments with 41,255 beds

at the end of 2017. Tourist bed nights was

estimated at 8,612,312 which was an increase

of 10.8% compared with that of 2016. While

the average occupancy rate was recorded at

61.2%, the average duration of stay of a

tourist in the Maldives rose to 6.2 days.

Die Malediven erreichten im Dezember 2017

Rekordwerte und begrüßten 143.041 Touristen

mit einem deutlichen Anstieg von 19,7% im

Vergleich zum Dezember 2016. Mit diesem

besser als erwarteten Ergebnis endete das Jahr

2017 mit erfolgreich für die Malediven. Die

gesetzten Ziele für 2017 wurden übertroffen.

Die Gesamtankünfte haben sich auf für das Jahr

auf 1.389.542 summierten, was einem Anstieg

von 8% gegenüber 2016 entspricht.

Europa behauptete sich als Marktführer mit

beeindruckenden 46,5%. Die Region

verzeichnete im Jahr 2017 ein gesundes

Wachstum von 12,4% gegenüber dem Vorjahr.

Alle Teilregionen innerhalb Europas

verzeichneten 2017 ein positives Wachstum mit

Mittel- / Ost und Süd-Europa.

Das Wachstum in der Region führte Ende 2017

zu einem deutlichen Anstieg von 23,9% bzw.

21,2%. Asien und der Pazifik folgten mit 44,4%

Anteilen. Zusammen mit starken Zahlen aus den

drei Teilregionen Südostasien (21,4%),

Ozeanien (18%) und Südasien (10,5%) und der

stetigen Erholung von Nordostasien im letzten

Quartal 2017, Asien und Ozeanien. Der Pazifik

beendete das Jahr 2017 mit einem deutlichen

Plus von 3,2% gegenüber 2016. Auf der dritten

Position lag die schnell wachsende Region

Americas mit einem Anteil von 4,5% an den

Ankünften auf den Malediven im Jahr 2017.

Die Region verzeichnete eine gesunde

Wachstumsrate von 22,8% für das Jahr 2017

im Vergleich zu 2016. Nahost nahm 2017

3,5% der Anteile auf den Malediven. Diese

Region verzeichnete jedoch aufgrund der

starken Rückgänge im Jahresverlauf ein

Minus von 4,2%. Die Region Afrika trug zwar

1,1% zur Gesamtzahl der Malediven im Jahr

2017 bei, verzeichnete jedoch die besten

Ergebnisse des Jahres mit einem deutlichen

Anstieg von 36,5% im Vergleich zu 2016.

Betrachtet man einzelne Märkte, blieb China

mit 22,1% an der Spitze. Der Markt

verzeichnete jedoch im Jahr 2017 ein

negatives Wachstum von 5,5% gegenüber

dem Vorjahr. Gleichwohl verzeichnete der

chinesische Markt in den beiden letzten

Monaten des Jahres 2017 deutliche

Erholungstendenzen. Deutschland

behauptete seine Position mit 8,1% auf Platz

2. Aktien und ein solider Anstieg von 5,5%

im Vergleich zu 2016. Großbritannien war

mit einem Marktanteil von 7,5% der

drittgrößte Markt auf den Malediven im Jahr

2017. Der britische Markt, der sich von Juli

bis September 2017 negativ entwickelte,

erholte sich zum Jahresende mit einem

signifikanten Anstieg von 2,1%. Italien war auf

dem 4. Platz und festigte seinen Anteil mit 6,4%.

Der italienische Markt gehörte im Jahr 2017 zu

den wachstumsstärksten Ländern mit einem

Plus von 24,8%. Der indische Markt entwickelte

sich im Jahr 2017 gut und verzeichnete ein

zweistelliges Wachstum von 24%. Er blieb auf

Platz 5 und beanspruchte 6% der Marktanteile.

Der russische Markt eroberte 4,3% der

Ankünfte und blieb Ende 2017 auf dem 6. Platz.

Russland war mit einem soliden Anstieg von

33% für das Jahr 2017 im Vergleich zu 2016 der

beste Anbieter unter den Top-Ten-Märkten

Markt beendete das Jahr auf dem 7. Platz mit 3%

Aktien. Der Markt hat sich in den letzten drei

Monaten des Jahres 2017 extrem gut entwickelt,

was zu einem deutlichen Wachstum von 4,6%

für das Jahr 2017 gegenüber 2016 führte. Der

japanische Markt lag Ende 2017 mit 3% Aktien

und einer Wachstumsrate an 8. Stelle von 3,1%.

Der US-Markt beendete das Jahr 2017 mit einem

kräftigen Anstieg von 20% gegenüber 2016. Mit

einem Marktanteil von 2,8% blieb die USA auf

dem 9. Platz. Der koreanische Markt

verzeichnete im Jahr 2017 ein deutliches

Comeback und verzeichnete einen Anstieg von

17,7%. Der Markt trug im Jahr 2017 2,5% zu den

gesamten Ankünften auf den Malediven bei.

Auf der Angebotsseite wurde für das Jahr

2017 ein Anstieg der registrierten

Bettenkapazität um 10% registriert. Ende

2017 gab es insgesamt 736 registrierte

Betriebe mit 41.255 Betten. Die

Übernachtungen von Touristen wurden auf

8.612.312 geschätzt, was einem Anstieg

von 10,8 entspricht. Während die

durchschnittliche Vermietungsquote bei

61,2% lag, stieg die durchschnittliche

Aufenthaltsdauer eines Touristen auf den

Malediven auf 6,2 Tage.

The Maldives is seeking election to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member, for the term 2019 – 2020, the election for which is scheduled at the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, in June 2018.
