LCP Website Contest To introduce our members to the new and improved LCP website, we are running a contest throughout the month of August. There will be a winner each week, and a grand prize winner at the end of the month who will win 6 months of FREE member- ship! Each week, you will have the opportunity to answer five new questions. The answers, of course, will be found on the LCP website. Submit your correct answers by filling out the forms and placing them in the box at the front desk. Each week a draw- ing will be held from the correct answers. At the end of the month, a grand prize will be drawn from all the correct answers we’ve received all month. Good luck, and start hunting for the answers on our site August 1st. Here are the first week’s questions: How many unique-purpose studios does LifeCenter Plus have? When does the outdoor pool regularly close on weekdays/weekends? What dates/times is Tai Chi offered? The Total Fitness Experience class is limited to what age group? What is the Gold Card Club for kids? It was a long time coming, but we want- ed to make our new website as interesting and user-friendly as possible. LifeCenter Plus’ totally redesigned site is now up and ready to serve your information needs. Go to www.lifecenterplus.com , and we hope you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the aes- thetic and practical improvements. As one example, you will be able to access a schedule of classes for any activity LifeCenter Plus offers. You will get not only the date, time and place, but you can click through to find out other details about that class like the instruc- tor or any requirements. You will also be able to get up-to-date information on any class changes from the website, and you will enjoy other features like information about wellness lectures and special events; the entire newslet- ter online (as well as continuing to be mailed to you); and health tips. You can also read qualifications and see photos of personal trainers and, in the near future, fitness associ- ates and massage therapists will also provide vital information, too. Like all major undertakings, our site is a work in progress. New features and updates will be added as needed. To reintroduce our website, we are running a contest for mem- bers. See the contest below. Get ready for the LifeCenter Plus TechnoGym Olympics. This competitive, fun program will take place in the same timeframe as the real Olympics in Beijing. Test yourself against your personal best and other LCP mem- bers. Since all of the athletes in the Beijing Olympics are training on TechnoGym equip- ment, we will use the same equipment here at LCP, to create some exciting competition of our own. You must have a TechnoGym Key for this program, so if you don’t have one already, get one for the low cost of $20, so you don’t miss out. Hello Everyone! There Is So Much to Tell You

I hope you all are enjoying your summer. As usual, I love to hearall about your vacations, and I like to see pictures! I’m having a busysummer and have been enjoying the outdoors, family, friends, and haveeven taken a few trips! Of course, the highlight of my summer was get-ting to watch my grandson grow, change and--the best part--watchinghim discover the new things around him! Oh, to be young and explor-ing things for the first time!

Since we last “spoke”, we had another successful Golf Scramble atRacoon Hill Golf Club in June, raising $2,000.00 for the Boys andGirls Club of the Western Reserve. I’m also pretty sure that everyonehad a great day with all of the participants getting at least one gift andplenty of good food throughout the day! The first place team honorwent to Ed Tyla, Brian Tyla, Jun Osoteo and Mark Osoteo. The otherawards and winners were:Thom Lester, Longest Putt; “TeamComputology”, Longest Drive Men; Jeanine Welter, Longest DriveWomen; Rick Schuping, Closest to the Hole #3; Dave Brandolini,Closest to the Hole #6; Dennis Chech, Closest to the Hole #15;Congratulations to all!

As always, we have new programs and activities happening aroundthe Club. Please refer to your program guide or ask any staff memberfor assistance. We have so much going on, whether it is a physical activ-ity, health screening, lectures, or fun events that raise money for wor-thy causes, and you can find out about these events in the guide, over-head announcements, or by flyers around the club. We want you totake advantage of whatever activities work for you and remember thatwe are here to help make it easy for you to get involved!

Eric Shanaberger—JulyEric Shanaberger has been a member of

LifeCenter Plus for over two years, sincebringing his business to Hudson in 2006.As a former college and professional basket-ball player and coach, working out andtraining have been a significant part of hislife for over 25 years. Currently he worksout six days a week, combining both a freeweight and cardiovascular regimen. He usu-ally spends between 1.5 and 2 hours per daytraining at LCP. Since working out is so important to him, Ericfelt that the club he chose needed to be, not only convenient butto have the proper equipment and staff as well.

Eric likes the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of LCP, and thechance to get some sun at the outdoor pools after a hard workout!Eric’s youngest daughter--an aspiring basketball player--is set tobegin a personal training program with Rom Vinhaes in order tohelp her meet her goal of playing for the Tennessee Lady Volssome day.

Eric owns Shanaberger Financial Services, LLC, here inHudson, where his organization maintains a staff of over 20 pro-fessionals to assist planners and clients with their financial plan-ning needs. Eric is married to Kelly and has 6 children ranging inage from 13-25.

He is active in the community, having served on LeadershipHudson, and his church, Hudson Community Chapel. Eric wasone of the originators of The Taste of Hudson in 2005.

Mark Rubin—AugustMark Rubin has been a LifeCenter Plus

member since the late 1970’s and remem-bers the club when the men's fitness equip-ment was located in the west end of the pres-ent locker room! He began coming to whatwas then the Darrow Road Racquet Clubbecause of the indoor running track, butafter a number of years of running around incircles (he once calculated that he had runaround the track several hundreds of thou-sands, if not at least a million times), Mark decided that it wastime to diversify his training regimen.

Mark’s current routine includes aerobic activities (treadmillor elliptical) three times a week and strength training twice aweek. He also does personal training with Rom Vinhaes everycouple of weeks to keep his program on track.

Mark credits LifeCenter Plus, and particularly Rom, withkeeping him trim and in decent shape at his “advanced age” of 64.Before beginning his current avocation of being a conductor onthe Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, Mark was a professor ofFrench and the Director of International Programs at Kent StateUniversity, where he worked for more than 33 years before retir-ing. Mark comes to LifeCenter Plus often. He is always smiling, friendly, and loves to share his fabulous travel experiences. He hasbeen many places, and we are glad he visits us all the time!

Doctors of Chiropractic Rebecca and Robert Ault will dis-cuss the importance of proper backpack use by addressing keyissues such as choosing the right backpack for each child andproper packing procedures including how much weight in thepack is too much. Page 5: Newsletter - Lifecenter Plus · 2016-02-29 · page 2, August/September LifeCenter Plus Health and Fitness Center / 330-655-2377 Hello Everyone! There Is So Much to Tell You I hope

Summer fun is still going strong, and we all want to enjoy thebeautiful weather outside after being cooped up all winter. However, itis important to keep up with your strength training even thoughyou may be very active otherwise. Remember, no other activity cantake the place of this part of your training regimen. It is throughstrength training that your resting metabolic rate is increased. Balanceis improved through strength training as well. If you’re a golfer or aswimmer, come in and learn how to increase the strength and flexibil-

ity of your rotator cuff. In fact, just about anything you want to do canbe improved upon with strength training. LCP’s highly certified anddegreed fitness staff would love to help you meet your goals. Just askus!

Exercise is more than fun, its good medicine. The AmericanMedical Association (AMA) and the American College of SportsMedicine (ACSM) are teaming up to form a five-point plan that seeksto increase the number of medical doctors who write prescriptions forexercise. This plan would also encourage greater cooperation betweenthe health care and fitness industries. A large body of scientific evi-dence pointing to exercise as a vital component of health is growingevery day.

Perhaps this will be enough to convince federal legislators to passthe Workforce Health Improvement Program (WHIP) act and thePersonal Health Investment Today (PHIT) act. Both pieces of legisla-tion are aimed at providing financial incentive for good health to indi-viduals and employers by way of tax abatement. It’s not a bad idea toremind our representatives of our opinions on this subject. With anational healthcare bill of 76 billion dollars last year and rising, howcan we afford not to?

The best part about being on staff here at LCP is the people.I love helping new members get acquainted with all we have tooffer and making them feel at home. I havebeen with LCP for close to 8 years now andworked at the Front Desk for 7 years. I havemade a lot friends and workout buddies overthe years. You will often see me doing my“Smartkey” workout back on theTechnogym equipment. I love cominghome and bragging to my husband that Ihave lifted a total of 325,000lbs to date.

When I am not at the gym, I am spend-ing time with my family. My loving hus-band and I have been married for 31 years and we have four won-derful children. As most of you know, our oldest son got marriedlast summer and is a biology teacher in the Pittsburgh area. Ourdaughter is a math teacher in this area, and our other two sonsoften come to LCP with me to workout or soak up the sun at theoutdoor pool. Bob and I both come from very big families, andwe love spending our summer weekends hosting cookouts for thewhole family. We are both looking forward to the next phase ofour lives, spoiling grandchildren and--thanks to all of those hardworkouts--I think we will have no problem keeping up with them!

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calo-ries your body burns each day with no activity (at rest). Itmakes up the majority of calories--up to 75% in healthyindividuals and 100% in the critically ill-- burned eachday.

Resting metabolism is unique to each individual andis affected by a number of factors including age, bodyweight, body composition, gender, genetics, medications, nutritional supplements (such as caffeine, Ephedra orSynephrine), fever or infections, exercise and calorierestriction. Measuring your resting metabolic rate helpsdetermine exactly how many calories your body truly

needs. With that information, you can more accuratelyadjust your nutritional needs and recommendations.

The BodyGem Metabolism Measurement Devicemeasures resting metabolic rate and the BalanceLog soft-ware that goes with it can allow you to manage weight andnutrition by balancing the calories you eat with the calo-ries you burn to make your fitness plan more successful.

Ask fitness staff or your personal trainer about havingyour RMR measured today. Once you've had your meta-bolic rate measured, use the nutrition and exercise pro-gram to log and track your food intake and exercise. Thefitness center and training staff have more information.
