We will continue to focus on using all that we know to solve tricky words. We will be looking at characters’ facial expressions, thinking about whether things make sense, thinking about what word would make sense, looking for parts of the word that we know, breaking up words, and asking ourselves, “Did that make sense?” Additionally we will be starting our unit on learning about the world through informational text. We will be talking about what we already know about a topic, what we have learned and asking ourselves what else do we want to know. We will be looking at parts of an informational book such as the table of contents, headings, bold words and diagrams. When reading with your child a few things you can do are: Make sure he/she reads for 20 minutes a night. Ask them questions such as: What do you think will happen in this book? Why? What happened? How do you know? Who are the characters in the book? What happened in the beginning, middle and end of the book? Did what I read make sense? What is this book all about? What does a heading tell us about the information that we are reading? Writing In November, we will be completing our how-to unit. A how-to is a step-by-step procedure on how to make or do something. We will be talking about how to teach someone how to do something using step-by- step directions. We will learn about introductions and conclusions to our writing too. We will also be continuing to stretch out words while we write. Then we will begin our unit on “All About books.” In this unit, we learn how to write an informational book. We will be focusing on how to include a table of contents, illustrations, labels and diagrams, heading, bold words and captions.
