I’ve been doing it for an income since the first of the year. What have I learned? Written analyses are not as good as spontaneous telephone readings. Read- ings require a good hour’s preparation. The consultation chart, which is a chart for the start of the reading, often pinpoints the client’s exact concerns. As a long-time professional I of course did not consult Donna Cunningham’s The Consulting Astrologer’s Guidebook (out of print) until this past week. Wherein I learned that astrologers are supposed to Tell You What To Do, and that You’d Better Do That! (Or Else!) Donna says that a lot of astrologers are exhausted after a single read- ing, which must be true of Donna herself, since she mentions it. She says exhaustion comes from “giving healing energy,” but my suspicion is that if the astrologer is zapped, so too will be his client. Well, if I’m trying to tell the client what to do and he’s resist- ing, no wonder we’re both exhausted. I haven’t the slightest interest in telling anyone what to do. It’s not what you hired me for. My method is different. I can tell you what the problem is, how the problem is structured. Sometimes there is a strictly astrological explanation, but sometimes we need more than that. I start with astrology and then add to it, principally with Common Sense 101. In other words, I become the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland, making you run faster than you have ever run before. Usually I find the solution, but sometimes, and to my great surprise, the cli- ent does. You talk to me, I talk to you, we dialogue, things happen. A brain-storming session. After all, you are the person best suited for figuring out your problems. The con- sultant is your personal trainer. He empow- ers you. I can make you run faster, think harder, than you have before. Which is to say that for the time that we are together, you are, temporarily, running alongside me, at my pace, and reaping the result.. I’ve now finished my January appoint- ments and am accepting new clients. My rate is $200. I have evenings open, starting Thursday. Sign up here, or phone 410-638- 7761, or email. What I’ve learned:— I Nephritis. The case below is taken from Modern Astrology for July 1915, where the positions are given without data of the time of birth, which, however, was on September 27, 1878. The native suf- fered from consumption of the bowels and lungs, spinal tuberculosis and ne- phritis. The satellitium in Virgo strikes the eye at once, and it would seem, though the native was obviously inter- ested in philosophy, that the sign was in this case quite as potent as the house. The opposition of Saturn to Sun/Mars seems to have been the main cause of these many and severe troubles, and per- haps the lack of angular bodies was in part responsible, as well as Moon con- junct Pluto in the 6th. Jupiter in Capri- corn does not appear to be very helpful in bad health; here, also, it forms part of a grand trine, which is of dubious ben- efit. Another case is that of Eugene V. Debs, the USA labour leader, born 9 am, November 5, 1855, Terre Haute, IN. This map shows the same rising sign and Saturn is in exact square to its place in the above map. Moon is in the same degree as Mars above.

Michael Jackson

MICHAEL JACKSON was born on Au-gust 29, 1958. Alleged birthtimesvary. I’ve seen 10:00 am, 7:30

pm, 11:53 pm and 11:55 pm, this last from aKP astrologer running subs. When you canmake the subs work, you’re doing well, asKrishnamurti is a very demanding system. When I had a quickie look last week I hadonly seen the 10:00 am chart, which gave himcardinals on all four angles.

My preliminary choice is for the 11:53pm chart, and for a variety of reasons.

One, whatever he looked like at birth, heessentially made himself into a Gemini pixie. And that’s a Gemini ascendant writ large. Didhis extreme plastic surgery sometimes makehim look grotesque? Sure. But more ex-treme plastic surgery would correct it. If helived to 80, he would have gone on gettingexotic facelifts. He would have alwayslooked good, at least as long as his healthwas strong enough to permit the operations.

Second, 11:53 pm puts Leo on his 4th andVirgo on his 5th. Virgo on 5, yes, that’s anartist who will micro-manage details, but it’salso a liking for young (male) children. Leoon the 4th house cusp, that’s living in a castle,no, more than a castle. In one’s own coun-try: Neverland. It was 4.7 square miles.

Gemini rising, according to Robson (andme) is an aspect of cruelty. Cruelty to what, exactly? Ruler Mercury debilitated in Leo,Leo representing royalty, royalty beingunique, cruelty to himself. Mercury debili-tated and wanting to be in the opposite house(the 10th), wanting to look his best, wantingto be regal, kingly, whenever he was in pub-lic. Mercury retrograde, he would do any-thing, and we could see the cracks.

Why did he not have a partner, why wasa real marriage denied him? Look at the 7thhouse cusp. Sagittarius there, he wants someone exotic, someone different, someone fresh.Jupiter ruling from Libra and the 5th house,he wants someone to have fun with, but, Li-bra intercepted (if the time is right) means hewill have problems finding that person, sinceLibra has no “anchor” in the 5th.

Instead, for partners Michael was pushed, again and again, up against the proper rulerof the 5th, Mercury, debilitated in Leo. Con-sider that he might well have undergone allthe painful surgeries and facial alterationsmerely to be thought worthy of receiving

love, that Mercury, ruling the 5th, wanted tomake a perfect impression on his would-belover. Note also that when we find Virgo onthe 5th, Mercury in distress, with Capricornon the 7th and Saturn prominent, sexual ex-pression can become so onerous and burden-some that one gives up hopes of a real life, and thereafter has sporadic bursts. Saturnon the 7th, he doesn’t actually like people.

Saturn retrograde on the 7th, few partnersactually liked him. And, regrettably, this isknown to be true. Remember the reputationJackson had? Whacko Jacko. Yes it was un-fair, but that it stuck indicates that he was vul-nerable. Would you go on a date with him? He’s sexy, yes, but he’s also, well, not some-one you can trust, oddly enough. You expecthim to do weird things. Was he a Peter Pan, orwas he only pretending? What was real?

MICHAEL JACKSON had the same Sunand Moon, by sign, as our oldfriend Johann Goethe. Sun in

perfectionist Virgo, Moon in hyper-sensitivePisces. In Jackson’s case, the opposition iswide. It’s not a matter of degrees, but ofsigns. Goethe was a consummate artist andin fact spent many years reworking Newton’srather crude ideas about color. In Jackson’scase, he was just as intense about getting hisrecordings exactly right.

Imagine a Sun-Moon opposition. Intellec-tualize it. The Sun in Virgo has detail and fussi-ness, which he offers to the Moon. But to theMoon, it’s exactly what the she does not wantto hear. So she rejects it, out of hand. FullMoons say “NO!” a lot, and that’s why.

Turn it around, the Moon feels and seeseverything. In Pisces it has no filter, it hasno defenses. Good, bad, happy, sad, up,down, it’s all the same. See the Sun, stand-ing in the other corner. Whatcha got?, theSun asks. This! and This! and That! TheSun looks and thinks what the Moon hasshown him is all perfectly dreadful.

But here’s the catch: The Sun is not anemotional planet. He has no emotional stake. He does not like or dislike. That’s not hisfunction. The Sun shines on everyone andeverything. The Sun is regal, it is the rulerof all the planetary citizens, even the oneshe doesn’t really like. In a literal sense, therecan be no such thing as an opposition to theSun, since the Sun is the very center of allthings, by definition. Always has been, al-

love affairs apart from marriage. Planets in,or the rulers of, these houses denote the suc-cess or otherwise of love and marriage anddescribe the appearance and characteristicsof the marriage partner or people to whomthe native becomes attached. In addition tothese the significators of love and marriage ina male horoscope are the Moon and Venus, andin a female one the Sun, Venus and Mars.

Love affairs apart from marriage are tobe judged chiefly from the 5th and 11thhouses, their rulers, and aspects to the abovesignificators. The rising sign and the signand house position of the planets concernedwill indicate the native’s attitude towards loveaffairs, their success, and the type of peopleto whom he is attracted.

Marriage or the likelihood of union mustbe judged by the sign positions of the sig-nificators. (a) Male. In male horoscopesmarriage is indicated if the Moon and Venusare strong, especially in the “fruitful” signsCancer, Scorpio, or Pisces; if Mars aspectsVenus; if Venus and the Moon are not af-flicted by Saturn; and if fruitful signs are onthe 1st or 7th or the lords of these houses arein good aspect. The indications preventingor delaying marriage are Moon and Venusweak, afflicting each other, and afflicted bya strong Saturn, especially when they are inthe “barren” signs Aries, Gemini, Virgo, orCapricorn; Moon conjunct Sun in Capricornor Aquarius and afflicted by Saturn; and theMoon in Scorpio afflicted by Saturn.

Love & Marriage

TAppearance of the

first decanate:Libra people are usually slen-der in youth, but tend to stout-ness in middle life. The fea-tures are regular and pleasing, this being a sign of beauty, es-pecially in women. The headhas a characteristic fallingaway at the back, denotinglack of self-esteem, for Librapeople rarely push them-selves and depend upontheir partners for many things. The brow is good, both broad and high, themouth sensitive and well-shaped. The shoul-ders in men, however, are often too narrowand the figure too wide at the hips.

The first decanate is ruled by Venus. Thisgives a refined but kindly nature, easily in-fluenced by others. Thus the life will be sub-jected to numerous changes, initiated chieflyby the desires of others, whilst the mind haltsbetween two courses.1 There is some chanceof inheriting property or possessing land atthe close of life. The mind is fond of compar-ing, whilst the career is often literary or artis-tic, but there is not much power to act indi-vidually or make decisions apart from others.1This tendency is increased for those who have upto 15 Libra rising, as Cancer and the Moon thenrule the midheaven, thereby subjecting them to themood of the moment and its influence.

Vimshottari DasasA brief overview by Alan Leo

position. Property will increase. There willbe domestic plenty and happiness. Benefitsfrom the employment or occupation. Law-yers, priests (clergy), and superiors favourthe native.

Saturn.—There will be an increase ofwealth or property. After this, pains in thebody will be experienced, rheumatic painsin the limbs. Troubles through the wife orpartner. A falling off of profit and credit inthe place of abode. But these troubles willpass away.

Mercury.—Gain by knowledge in thefine arts. Birth of a well-favoured child, inthe case of married people. Wealth increasesand advantages from superiors fall to thenative.

Dragon’s Tail.—The partner, althoughstrong, will die. The native will change hisplace of abode. He will be separated fromhis relatives and friends, and he may leavehis business or forsake his occupation be-cause of all this.

Venus.—There will be a reunion in thefamily. Good success in the profession orbusiness. He will gain land in the month ofTaurus or Libra (i.e., when the Sun is in thesesigns). Much enjoyment. Relatives arefriendly, and he will live in peace.

ways will be.So when the Sun finds himself in a full

moon situation, he must take what the Moongives him, do something with it, and then giveit back to the Moon. But to his surprise, hefinds the Moon to be very, very fussy. Shemust be dealt with on lunar terms, not solarones. This forces the Sun to invent, and thento reinvent and finally, at wits end, to simplygive up and throw the Moon the first thing thatcomes to mind. And to his amazement, themore the Sun surrenders, the more he simplybats the ball straight back (like ping-pong) themore the Moon is delighted with the result.

In more down-to-earth terms, the fullmoon person has lots of ideas (the full moonis the ultimate in sheer contrast), but hethrows out most of them because they don’t“feel right.” In Jackson’s specific case, hisVirgo ideas just did not have the right de-tails. There was always an objection. So hegoes back and forth. Will this work? Willthat work? Will anything work?

Slowly he grinds out the right idea. Fullmoons need time to find the one plan in whichall the details will work. Which will balanceperfectly. One that will, more or less, satisfythe Moon. The result will be so far beyondwhat was expected as to astound the world. The full moon, if it is in any way unleased, will rise to profound, dynamic levels.

But the full moon’s sensitivity has a steepdownside: They will make you into a recluse.Afraid to leave the house. Every portrait I’veseen of Goethe he had a terrified look on hisface. The mega-star Michael Jackson wasexactly the same. When he was already quitefamous in 1979, he gave a TV interview. Hisnext TV interview was in 1993, 14 years later.Yes, that’s Saturn at work (Virgo in ‘79, Pi-sces in ‘93), you can work out the Sun-Moondetails for yourself.

We can also work out the relative strengthof Sun and Moon. Jackson’s Sun is conjunctPluto, which gives it great power andstrength. It is ruled by the chart ruler, Mer-cury, with which it is in mutual reception. The Sun also rules Venus, Uranus and the4th house. It is widely trine Mars, and widelysquare to Saturn, in addition to opposing theMoon. The Sun and Mercury tie the 4th and5th houses together, with Pluto they are apowerful weight at the bottom of his chart.

Michael’s Moon, on the other hand, istightly square Saturn, which makes him emo-tionally insecure and defensive, sextile Mars, which is good, and widely opposed to Pluto, which is bad. In addition to the Moon beingfull. The Moon’s two rulers, Jupiter in Libraand Venus in Leo, are both inconjunct, which

makes for a Finger of Fate. Which, as I thinkinconjuncts are aspects of invisibility, meanshis Moon got little practical support from ei-ther benefic, even though they are the Moon’srulers. The Moon in the 11th appears lonely, isolated, and vulnerable.

Michael wore a white glove on his righthand, none on his left. Why the right hand? The hands are ruled by Virgo. (The feet areruled by Pisces.) The Sun rules the right sideof the body. If you say that, therefore, Sunin Virgo will wear a glove on the right handand make that a rule, you will be wrong.Michael developed the glove as a fetish. Hekept it on because it helped him express him-self in a fundamental fashion. Which, I think,is the secret to fetishes, that they enable theperson to express some part of himself, andwith this in mind, fetishes may be found tohave astrological significance. The glove waswhite because Virgo is picky and white isclean, it was white because of the Sun’s radi-ance, it was white in reaction to the darknessof Pluto, lurking nearby. It was studded withrhinestones. Sparkly things they are, theyshone like the Sun itself.

By contrast, Michael had extreme bodysensitivity, which is the Moon. There was abroken nose that never properly healed. Hisscalp was seriously burned. When, in 1993,he was accused of sexual molestation the vic-tim alleged Jackson to be circumcised.Which, from what I remember of high school

locker rooms, would be a good guess. MostAmerican males are circumcised. (You canguess about me, why not!) As part of theinquiry, Jackson was forced to submit to anexamination (Wiki says strip searched) andwas determined to be uncircumcised. Whichwas confirmed at his autopsy.

Jackson simply shut down as a result. The case was eventually settled out of court, and as Jackson himself later repudiated theterms, it would appear his insurers did it overhis objections, simply to get rid of it.

There was much the same result whenJackson’s ranch was raided in 2005. Jack-son felt it to be a violation. His responsewas swift and absolute: He abandoned hishome of 17 years and went to Dubai. This isa highly sensitive Moon, in this case empow-ered by an enraged Sun conjunct Pluto.

Daddy. Michael’s father, Joseph “Joe”Jackson, is all over the chart, as he was inMichael’s actual life. The father is shownby the 4th house cusp and its ruler. InMichael’s case, Leo is on the 4th house cusp, which means Jackson’s father was a supremeauthority of some sort. The ruler of Leo isJackson’s Sun in Virgo in the 5th. Which isthe second house to the father, which meansJoe Jackson saw his son as a source of money.Sun in mutual reception with the ruler of the5th (2nd) confirmed Michael as Joe’s veryown fortune cookie. Sun conjunct Pluto, thefather was cruel (documented). Sun conjunct

and empowered by Pluto, opposite the Moon,Sun representing daddy, Moon being Michaelhimself, Michael was square in his sights.

MICHAEL JACKSON was in fact dis-covered by his mother,Katherine. She is represented by

Jackson’s 10th house, Aquarius. The ruler isSaturn, in Michael’s 7th house, but the 10thwhen we turn the chart to represent hismother. Saturn retrograde in his mother’s10th house is why Katherine never had herown career. True to Saturn, she tried andtried, but Saturn retrograde, she never suc-ceeded. When Michael was about 5 yearsold, his mother discovered his talent, but, again, her ruler retrograde, Katherine’s ef-forts to promote Michael, to her husband, toMichael’s own family, were ignored. Byturning Michael’s chart, do we have an ab-solute portrait of his mother, or his father?

No. We have only that part that is rel-evant to Michael himself. Michael Jackson’sfather was cruel to Michael. Not necessarilyto any of his other children. Katherine’saborted career was important to Michael, butnot necessarily to herself. When children gettogether as adults and compare memories oftheir childhoods, they are often surprised athow much they disagree about the very na-ture of their own parents. Very likely MichaelJackson’s own funeral was the occasion forjust such an event.

MICHAEL JACKSON was declareddead on June 25, 2009, at 2:26pm, in Los Angeles. So let’s do

a proper analysis. The Sun is not hyleg, asMichael was a night birth. Is the Moon inPisces hyleg? The Moon is not aspected byits ruler (Jupiter), nor the co-ruler (Venus). It is in square to Saturn, but Saturn has norulership of the 17th degree. The Moon issextile to Mars, but, again, Mars has no rul-ership of the Moon’s degree. Nor does theSun, which is in opposition.

Mercury has rulership of the third term(bound) of Pisces, but is not in aspect to theMoon. Which leaves us with Mars as tri-plicity ruler of Pisces. (Triplicity means rul-ing the three water signs. Not the decanate.)If Mars is the Alcochoden, or giver of years,it is both cadent as well as debilitated. It givesminimum years, 15. To this we add mini-mum years of benefics if conjunct, trine orsextile. As we find none, as Michael livedfar beyond his teens, we discard the Moonas hyleg and consider the Ascendant at 16Gemini as hyleg The ruler is Mercury, which,in sextile, becomes the alcochoden.

Mercury is angular, which would givemaximum years (76), but it’s also retrograde,

which I think means its medium years, whichare 48. Mercury is sextile to Jupiter, a ben-efic, so we add Jupiter’s least years, 12, toget 60. Mercury is not conjunct Venus, asVenus is on the other side of the 4th housecusp, which is an absolute separation. Mer-cury is square the malefic Mars, so we sub-tract Mars’ least years, 15, to get a final fig-ure of 45. Michael Jackson died at the ageof 50. Do you really, really wanna be an as-trologer? Are you sure? Compute your prob-able life expectancy and then decide. I didmine and I’ve been trying to rationalize itaway ever since. I do enough dead celebri-ties and maybe I’ll satisfy myself.

The year 2003, when Michael Jacksonwas 45, started the final downward slide. Hewas arrested in 2003, abandoned his ranchin 2005, and then had protracted financial dif-ficulties as well as artistic disappointments.I am not satisfied I understand the traditionalformula for life expectancy, nor am I satis-fied that excess years are a twilight period, but Jackson’s case is suggestive.

In Jackson’s death chart, the ascendantis de facto conjunct his natal Jupiter, both inLibra. This is a death that is an adventure, alarger than life (supra-life) voyage with afriend. My private research suggests thedeath ascendant will become the birth ascen-dant in the next life, but a rule cannot be madefrom the one example I have.

The Moon in Leo was exactly conjunct

Jackson’s Venus, the aspect was in fact ex-act one hour before death was declared. Thisis a touching aspect of hope. The Moon, aking, a proud man in Leo, comes to “lift”Venus into itself, to take Michael away. Imay be disturbing all of you by describingdeath as a process, rather than as a door slam-ming shut, but such is how I see it.

Transiting Mars and Venus were both inTaurus and bearing down on Michael’s natalMars. Mars coming to itself is an old friend(a Mars return, in fact), with Venus, the rulerof Taurus, with it for support. Venus, squareto itself, strikes me as trying hard to get itright, to make things nice. Note that none ofthese are fatal aspects. They are mere hand-maidens, they are attending angels.

Mere mortals do not die like this. Theheavens do not open up to receive them theway they did for Michael Jackson.

WHICH leaves us with the riddle, the puzzle, the enigma, of the fullmoon birth. These are men of

huge talent, but they are more fragile thansnowflakes in April. They are with us for atime, and while they are here they performprodigious feats, to a mixture of open hostil-ity and mindless adulation. Both of whichhurt them horribly. The full moon is by farthe most powerful aspect of all, but the uni-verse bestows nothing without a price. Thefull moon birth pays that price, over and over.
