Headteacher’s Address Soon academic session 2016-17 will draw to a close and both pupils and staff may look forward to a well-earned and refreshing summer break after another year brimming with effort, endeavour and achievement. We will mark this achievement with both primary and secondary prizegiving events a tradition nearly as old as schools themselves where academic excellence is rightly celebrated in a public forum. In the darkest recesses of the longest terms, teacher can be forgiven for sometimes feeling overwhelmed by the challenges the job presents, but few at this time of year do not get a certain equally overwhelming sense of job satisfaction. Yes, this may have something to do with the prospect of long sun-drenched days (we are a hopeful breed) stretching out ahead, but it is much more to do with that unmistakable sense of achievement that comes from having accompanied our young people on another, at times arduous, journey of learning and to have seen at the end the evidence of intellectual, emotional and personal growth in each one. One of the prizes we award in the secondary prizegiving is for the highest achieving senior pupil in the school. It is appropriate that we use the Latin term Dux for this pupil which means ‘leader’, for it is first and foremost through example that we expect all of our senior pupils to lead. The award of Dux is not just recognition of the leadership shown by our senior pupils, but also an exhortation to our younger pupils to learn by this example and to aspire to excellence too. One of the many developments undertaken in the school this year was a review of our vision, values and aims, and I was delighted to see that one of the key ideas arising from the consultation with pupils was that of ‘achievement’. This idea was also very evident in both parent and staff consultations. There is perhaps no better single word to sum up the purpose of schools. Let me conclude then by offering my thanks and congratulations to both pupils and staff for their efforts over the year in translating ambition through joint endeavour into achievement, and by reminding one and all of the school’s motto: DAONNAN RI SÀR-GHNÌOMH (striving always for excellence!) Headteacher’s Address

Soon academic session 2016-17 will draw to a close and both pupils and staff

may look forward to a well-earned and refreshing summer break after another

year brimming with effort, endeavour and achievement.

We will mark this achievement with both primary and secondary prizegiving

events – a tradition nearly as old as schools themselves where academic

excellence is rightly celebrated in a public forum. In the darkest recesses of the longest terms, teacher

can be forgiven for sometimes feeling overwhelmed by the challenges the job presents, but few at this

time of year do not get a certain equally overwhelming sense of job satisfaction. Yes, this may have

something to do with the prospect of long sun-drenched days (we are a hopeful breed) stretching out

ahead, but it is much more to do with that unmistakable sense of achievement that comes from having

accompanied our young people on another, at times arduous, journey of learning and to have seen at the

end the evidence of intellectual, emotional and personal growth in each one.

One of the prizes we award in the secondary prizegiving is for the highest achieving senior pupil in the

school. It is appropriate that we use the Latin term Dux for this pupil which means ‘leader’, for it is first

and foremost through example that we expect all of our senior pupils to lead. The award of Dux is not

just recognition of the leadership shown by our senior pupils, but also an exhortation to our younger

pupils to learn by this example and to aspire to excellence too.

One of the many developments undertaken in the school this year was a review of our vision, values and

aims, and I was delighted to see that one of the key ideas arising from the consultation with pupils was

that of ‘achievement’. This idea was also very evident in both parent and staff consultations. There is

perhaps no better single word to sum up the purpose of schools. Let me conclude then by offering my

thanks and congratulations to both pupils and staff for their efforts over the year in translating ambition

through joint endeavour into achievement, and by reminding one and all of the school’s motto:

Breadalbane Community Campus was officially opened in 2011 and this was marked by a five year birthday party on Saturday 18th June. All Campus stakeholders contributed to this event, which was a fun day out for all of the family. As well as housing the school, the Campus is a superb facility for the whole community and it was great to show this off to the many members of the public who attended. Thanks to all stakeholders who supported this event, including members of school staff and the Parent Council.

Nursery

“We have been enjoying outdoor learning sessions throughout this term. The nursery have regularly visited the Birks, the park and the farmland around the campus. The children can describe some of the features of the environment around us, identify trees and explain how we stay safe outdoors. We have collected many natural resources to play with in our nursery playground and investigated animal homes. We also celebrated the children’s hard work this year with a pirate themed family garden party. The children showcased the work they had been doing in the Horsecross Little Stars singing workshops and also prepared a light lunch for our guests”.

Gaelic Medium

“The pupils have been looking at cave men and the mesolithic period. We have been reading a class novel called ‘Wolf Brother’ and participating in lots of outdoor activities relating to the novel. We have built shelters and made nettle soup with Mrs Butter with flat bread. We also went on a hill walk up Schiehallion and as our homework project we made national parks”.

Primary 1 “This term Primary 1 have been busy working with numbers to twenty and have begun take away

sums. They have continued to work on blending CVC words and sounding out their writing. Everyone

enjoyed a fantastic trip to the Deer Centre. What a memorable day!”

Primary 1/2

“This term we have been learning about Under the Sea and different sea creatures. We have created our own puppets and a small puppet show in groups. We have now begun looking at fresh water animals. During our trip to The Scottish Deer Centre we took part in a pond dipping experience and found lots of animals. We also able to feed lots of deer and watched a fantastic bird show”.

Primary 2/3

“This term we have been learning all about castles. We discussed the best place to build a castle and have been finding out how to attack or defend a castle. We have learned about some of the jobs people did within the castle and have built our own castle in the classroom. We visited Huntingtower Castle near Perth and tried out some of the servants’ jobs. Our favourite job was guarding the castle but we didn’t much like polishing the silver! We also had a visit from Drew at Pitlochry Theatre who told us all about the jobs people do in the theatre”.

Primary 3/4

“Primary 3/4 have learned a lot of team and outdoor activity skills on our Forest Play trip to Weem Woods with Biscuiteering. Rock scrambling, Free Den, Rabbits and Foxes and slack lining were all part of the fun as we gave helping hands, became supporters and mentors for each other. Drew Scott from Pitlochry Festival Theatre led the class in a range of drama games, quizzes and activities during World of Work Week in May. We developed French conversations, Gaelic singing and the Mod alongside some really excellent creative writing this term. In maths we have taken on new challenges in mental maths and made some good progress in measure, subtraction and problem solving. In literacy we have enjoyed our group work and active games. The children have taken part in their own Olympic events, learned rounders skills and taken part in the Daily Mile. This has all been fitted in alongside our dynamic Wildllife Explorers project. We also participated in the library “Make a Noise” event in which we learned about the difficulties blind or partially sighted people experience and how braille, listening books and guide dogs help them”.

Primary 4

“Primary 4 have been Scientists this term and have been learning how to do a fair test when researching the different forces. They have continued to enjoy Outdoor Learning and had a fun and adventurous day ‘Biscuiteering’ for their school trip. They have performed a play in Gaelic called ‘Pirate Pete Gets Fit’ in the Mod”.

Primary 5

“P5 have learned about Mysteries this term in Literacy and are now creating iMovie trailers on Mystery Topics. In Health, we looked at resilience and at why people bully and how to stop them. In PE, we have focussed on sprint skills and team skills in Rounders. We enjoyed a trip to Edinburgh to visit Dynamic Earth”.

Primary 6

Primary 6 have had a trip to Gleneagles Falconry School where they all got the opportunity to handle a Harris Hawk. They have been creating their own heroes and mythological beastslearned about famous Ancient Greek stories using direct speech and apostrophes in their writing. They have improved their running times in athletics and developed their tennis skills. In maths they have been using computers to create PowerPoints on data handling and have enjoyed solving Algebraic equations.

Primary 6/7

& 7

“P6/7 and P7 have finished off our year in spectacular fashion, delivering our Enterprise project through the school play ‘Shakespeare Rocks’. Everyone has put in a fantastic effort from learning scripts and songs, choreographing the dances, designing the sets, costumes, programmes and tickets and selling out our two shows. Also, we experienced various ‘Worlds of Work’ – P6/7 discovered photography, climbing and dentistry, while P7 received a warm welcome from Glen Lyon Coffee. P7s also enjoyed Safe Taysiders, learning about keeping themselves and others safe. What a great last term – especially for the P7s, who had the chance to taste Secondary life through transition days before saying their final goodbye to Primary”.

Pupil Council

The Primary Pupil Council has been very busy this year, engaging with pupils, staff, parents and outside partners. We listened to what our classes wanted to focus on and tried to make a difference for them. We have been able to make rules for trading cards, such as Pokemon and Football, so we can all play fairly. Tayside Contracts came in to speak with us so that everyone knew what food they could have at lunch (and what to get for seconds!). After making a video for the Parent Council we were able to get £500 towards equipment for the school P4-7 playground – play time is very important to us!! Following a request from the school we were able to gather ideas for how to help the buses park easily each day and we are currently looking at how we may make changes to our school uniform in the future. Watch out for us next year.

Bunsgoil Gaidhlig Inbhir Visit

Drama Stars P4 participated in the Gaelic Mod by performing a play based on the story ‘Pirate Pete Gets Fit’. The cast, led by Christopher and Natalie, enjoyed talking in Gaelic, performing exercises and dressing up as pirates – complete with scars and eye patches. The play was enjoyed by the audience and well received by the judges. The class was awarded a gold certificate and the judges feedback was: “Aren’t you great at exercise! The costumes were interesting and the words in the play were clear and fluent. Congratulations!”

The Gaelic class visited Bunsgoil Gaidhlig Inbhir Nis (Inverness Gaelic School) for a look round and to join in some lessons and games. To the right is a photograph of Primary 5 participating in a drama workshop with Ruaraidh from the Eden Court Theatre. It was great to hear Gaelic being spoken by all members of staff (including the dinner ladies and secretaries) and we had a very interesting day.

“On the 6th of June we went to Huntingtower Castle. We went on a bus to get there. The lady that took us round was called Ros. She took us to the kitchen and we got to put on hats and pretend to be servants. We got to have shots at all the jobs. In the next room we had to find things. Then we got to walk around the battlements and then we had lunch. After lunch we played with the parachute and then we dressed up and we danced. Then we sketched the castle and we got to go to the gift shop”. Holly P2/3

Secondary Residential Transition – Comrie Croft

Page 7 of 20 News June 2016

As part of the Primary 7 transition programme 62 pupils and staff had a 2 night residential outdoor experience at Comrie Croft. Arriving on the Wednesday morning the first set of activities were designed to help the pupils become familiar with the site. This was followed by team building games enabling pupils from all our primaries to mix and to get to know one another. That evening and throughout the rest of the trip pupils learned bushcraft skills with Mr Woodrow, went climbing with Ben Kellett and Mr Russell, cycled with Mr McIntosh and Karen Todd along with other parent helpers and participated in problem solving activities with Mr Davidson. Throughout the visit Sandy from Tayside Contracts along with Donald Smaile provided a very tasty range of dishes which were appreciated by all. The pupils had an incredible experience, making new friends, meeting new staff and learning new skills.

BAD Drama Club

The junior members of our extra-curricular Drama Club ’BAD Drama’, have been very busy in recent weeks. They have been devising short, original drama pieces and they recently performed their piece ‘Time Bomb’ in ‘A Mixed Bag’ on Thursday 16th June, which was our Performing Arts Showcase. They also performed at the ‘Campus’ 5th Birthday’ Celebration Day. Well done to everybody who is involved in BAD Drama Club.

French Cinema Trip “The Higher French class got the opportunity to go down to our local Birks cinema to watch the film ‘Dheepan’. The trip was kindly funded by Heartland Film Society. There was a mixture of languages used within the film including English, Tamil, and of course French. It was very educational for us as it gave us a chance to pick up different phrases in French in order to enhance our pronunciation and general understanding of the language. The film was set in France which gave us a flavour of the lifestyles there from the viewpoint of an immigrant family escaping from conflict. Afterwards we were asked to rate the film using beans rated from ‘0’ being bad to ‘4’ being excellent and filled out a form to show what we thought of this great experience. Despite getting the afternoon off and eating as much popcorn as humanly possible, we all thoroughly enjoyed the story behind the film through the sense of realism and enjoyed being able to take part in an interesting project like this. I would highly recommend others to go see the film too”.

ShoeBox Appeal

“Every year a group of Breadalbane Academy pupils (S3 +) participate in a range of activities ( for example, arranging a coffee morning or a bake sale), to raise money for the annual Shoebox Appeal, which aims to provide simple Christmas gifts for families who, otherwise, would have nothing. Last year

boxes were sent to nine countries, including Albania, Kosovo, Moldova and Pakistan. Towards the end of the Appeal, the group go to Perth, where they spend the money they have raised to buy shoebox fillers. They then enjoy a free meal sponsored by McDonalds! The final stage is when pupils join with members of the community in Aberfeldy town hall to spend a day filling and packing shoeboxes. It’s great fun and you get the chance to change someone’s life for the better at Christmas (even in a small way), so why not give it a try?”

S1 Poetry Stars Iona Carroll S5

21 S1 pupils have had their poems selected for publication in a book entitled “The Poetry Trials”. The collection is due for publication this month and a copy will be available in the library. S2 / S3 Cultural Exchange “Students from S2 and S3 recently took part in an exchange program with French partners from College Le Prince Ringuet, Genas, near Lyon. They came to Scotland for a week and experienced some of the places and activities Scotland and Aberfeldy has to offer. Rafting on the River Tay and the trip to Edinburgh were the most popular.

After a great week hosting the students from Genas, it was time for us to go to France. We flew in, met our partners and their families and were shown our house for the week. Our first day there was a Sunday so it was a day for families. Some people went to a theme park, others met in a group and went bowling and a few went to a zoo. On Monday we got up early to arrive at school for 8 o’clock! We had a treasure hunt around Genas and competed in an afternoon of sports at a nearby Sports Centre. On Tuesday we

went on a trip to the Confluence area of Lyon and visited a museum. We then had free time before heading home. For the rest of the week we did things like visiting Old Lyon, going Bowling, travelling to a Park called Miribel Jonage and spending some time in classes. There was also plenty of time after school to socialize with our French partners. Some of our musicians also played in a concert with the Genas students and we had a great ceilidh on the last night. It was an amazing experience and we were all sad to say goodbye to our partners and the friends we had made during our trip”. Ella Gibson

SCDA One Act Play Festival On Saturday 18th June, our Senior pupils participated in the Scottish Youth Final of the SCDA One Act Play Competition, with ‘BAD Drama Club’ (BAD=Breadalbane Academy Drama). They performed the play ‘DNA’ by Dennis Kelly, which was directed by Mrs Eve-Marie Shore and assisted by Mrs Barbara Strathearn. Previously, BAD Drama won both our local Northern Division round and also the Semi-Final. Unfortunately, we did not come first in the final, but came a very close second. We are very proud of our pupils for their talent, commitment and determination, as this is the first year that we have participated in the competition and it is a great achievement to come second, as a total of 47 schools/clubs entered the competition. Well done everybody! Pupils involved were: Aaron O’Neill, Courtney Campbell, Charlie Dingwall, Fergal Woolnough, Lachlan Menzies, Leyla Aycan, Bluebell Ross, Rebecca Cox, Eleanor Yearsley, Danii Forbes, Kyle Docherty, Peter Cochrane, Craig Swan and Ryan Worrell.

Creative Spaces

A team of four new S3 pupils (Lizzie Small, Alice Nicoll, Fraser Borland and Roddy Mathieson) took part in the Creative Spaces competition on the 18th of May at Dundee and Angus College. They were issued with a Brief, with an emphasis on Creative Design, Access for All and Sustainability, had to construct a model structure to fulfil this, and do a presentation in front of all of the other participants. The team came fourth out of the 22 schools entered. They represented themselves and the school well, winning £15 each and £150 for the CDT department .

Rotary Young Chef Tina Smaile, Charley Martin and Aaron Watt entered the Rotary Young Chef competition and came up with a two course menu which showcased Scottish produce for under £6.00 per portion. The competition took place at Perth College. Tina Smaile won the best overall main course for her Chicken and

Mushroom Barley Risotto. Charley won best dessert for her apple crumble tarts with butterscotch sauce and homemade vanilla ice cream. Aaron was the overall winner of the whole competition with his steak and peppercorn sauce, followed by chocolate and raspberry cheesecake with homemade truffles. Well done to all the competitors for a great effort.

Stars in the Making In May the Beechgrove Garden returned for the 3rd Time to film the pupils at work in the Community Garden. It was a good experience for the pupils who now realise that 6 hours of filming will produce 10 minutes of TV Time. See it on BBC iPlayer, episode 12 dated 16th June.

Parent Council Fundraising and Opportunities Group 2015/16

Over a year ago, in March 2015, some parents/ carers decided the Parent Council could offer support, ideas and a bit of enthusiasm, both to staff and pupils, to undertake a wider variety of activities, trips and events. We came together to form the Fundraising and Opportunities Group – FOG. Since then we have met monthly and have achieved lots to support the pupils and staff of Breadalbane and to make it a better, and more fun place to learn. Not wanting to be modest but, as a small group, we are quite proud of our achievements in our first year! Our aim was to:

- Raise money: Organise, facilitate and support a number of activities to raise funds for activities, trips and school events.

- Spend money - Offer financial support to staff and clubs who would benefit from this. - Support the Additional Support Needs group to raise funding and organize activities - Offer ideas to staff and clubs for activities that they could do.

What we did: Money in

- We ran 8 fundraising events including the thrift shop, a pub quiz, bake stalls, the end of year event last year etc. This raised us £1500

- We applied for a grant which raised £5000 - The ASN group raised over £10,000 from a variety of grant for a range of activities.

Money out - In the Primary School and nursery we supported

o A summer playscheme o An after school club o Nursery trip o Nursery playground equipment o P5 trip to Dynamic Earth o P4 trip o An assessment to upgrade the primary playground substantially

- In the Secondary School we supported o Science Club putting a balloon into space o The Additional Support Needs group garden o Art and Design trip to Dundee o Cycling fun day o Additional Support Needs coffee morning equipment o Formula 24 car o Ceilidh band trip

- The Additional Support Needs Parents Group have supported o Biscuiteering o Summer activities o A youth club o

So what next? We want FOG to get better at raising money and at giving it out to benefit more children. We have already got a programme of events planned for the coming year and we are looking at grants that we can apply for. We are also working on promotion of FOG and what we do and at improving our grant giving procedures. But we can’t do any of that without your help. Whether that is getting involved in the group (we are very nice and our meetings are fun!) or baking something or helping out in the thrift shop, it all helps. Please get in touch if you can help in any way. Email [email protected]

Salters Chemistry Challenge

Basketball Breadalbane Academy now has 2 basketball clubs which take place after school. S1 – S3 takes place on a Tuesday with Miss Heaney and S4-S6 on a Thursday with Miss Wilson. S1 – S3 have been playing in the the P&K schools league and they did very well to come 2nd overall which is fantastic as it is their first year in the League.

Sports Personality of the Year

Page 16 of 20 News June 2016

“This year a team of 4 S1 pupils were picked to compete in the Salters festival of Chemistry at Heriot Watt University. These festivals are fun events held at Universities in the UK and Ireland. When we arrived at Heriot Watt University we first had to complete the Salters Challenge which is a practical investigation that this time involved forensic testing like chromatography. We worked really well as a team and loved the challenge. After that we had lunch and explored the University. The next challenge was the investigation. In this challenge we had to find out how we could get water down to the correct temperature in one minute. We found this more challenging to do and in our final test the temperature stopped dropping but we still worked well as a team. We then went to the lecture theatre and had a fascinating lecture on temperature. At the end of the day the winners of both the salters and the University Challenge were announced. We won 1st prize for the Salters Challenge”.

Toby Carter won bronze in the U16 section. This is a fantastic achievement for these 3 pupils and all from Breadalbane Academy. Breadalbane Academy Horrible Science Revision Guide

Following a visit from Nick Arnold, writer of the Horrible Science series of books, S1 pupils produced their very own Horrible Science Revision Guide. Inspired by Nick’s talk pupils worked either individually or in pairs in an interdisciplinary project with English and Science. They studied Nick’s writing style then

produced their very own pages for inclusion in a Breadalbane Academy revision guide based on a topic they had learnt about in science throughout the year. Members of the local community, as well as Nick Arnold himself, were asked to judge pupils’ contributions according to various categories, ranging from best science and factual entries, to best written and most in the style of Nick Arnold. After looking at the entries Nick commented that “everyone has worked really hard and I am sure everyone has learnt a lot of great science as a result!” Certificates for the commended entries and runners up were awarded in a special assembly. Congratulations to all pupils who took part in this project: you should rightly be proud of all your excellent work.

Young Ambassadors Congratualtions go to Sophie Innes, Ranulph Finch, Peter Cochrane and Chloe Michie who are Breadalbanes Young Ambassadors. They all went with Mrs Todd to Stirling University this year to learn about leadership skills needed to organise sports competitions.

If anyone in the community would like to get involved in the school in a sporting or physical activity capacity please do not hesitate to contact Karen Todd our Active School Coordinator. Karen is really keen to promote existing opportunities and encourage new ones to allow the pupils to receive a wide variety of activities. Please contact her at [email protected]
