“And Paul, looking at him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, said in a loud
voice, „Stand upright on your feet.‟ And the man sprang up and began to walk.”
-Acts 14:9-10
Looking intently at a crippled man who was listening attentively to him speak, the Bible
says that Paul saw the man’s faith. I wonder exactly what it was that Paul saw. I also won-
der if Paul would have seen that man’s faith if he hadn’t looked at him so intently – but
that’s a different issue. Reading that Paul did see the man’s faith first raises the question:
What does faith “look” like?
Have you ever seen faith in someone?
I’m not sure I can conclusively describe what faith looks like, but on more than one occa-
sion, I know that I’ve recognized it when I’ve seen it. Sometimes it looks like deep peace.
Sometimes it looks like pure joy. Sometimes it looks like unwavering courage. But almost
all of the time, faith looks like trust. Visible faith also seems to usually have an “in spite
of,” risk-taking, quality to it – boldly speaking truth to power, knowing that one’s livelihood
may be at stake, tenaciously trusting in love, when one’s heart has been broken over and
over, believing that one might be able to stand up and walk on feet that have been crippled
since birth – visible faith always conveys a confident trust that in spite of the evidence, for
God, all things are possible.
So here’s an even bigger question: Do others see faith in you? Does God?
Be God’s,
Pastor Bonnie

*CUL — A Communion Usher Leader is a member of Consistory who will choose someone at the service to serve com-
munion with them.
“Flours” is a collection of pantry items or a monetary dona-tions to the pantry. If a cash donation to the pantry is made, a wheat arrangement will be placed on the altar. Altar flowers are $30.00 and bulletin dedications are $6.50. Food Sculp-tures are also gladly accepted. The are many dates open for sponsorship and dedica-tion during this and the upcoming months. Please com-plete one of the special flower/bulletin envelopes below the sign-up chart, enclose your payment, and either put it in the collection plate or in the Secretary’s box by the office door. You should then sign your name on the chart in the narthex by the appropriate date. Thank you.
Shenkel UCC celebrates the
sacrament of Holy Communion
at both services on the first
Sunday of each month. Each
time communion is served, some of the bread and non-
alcoholic wine that has been consecrated at the altar
will be saved in a traveling communion kit, ready to go
to the homes or hospital rooms of members who were
unable to be present, and would like to receive the sac-
rament. Please let Pastor Bonnie know if you, or some-
one you know, would appreciate “distance-
communing” with their Shenkel Church family!
COMMUNION AT SHENKEL….
We have received a letter of thanks from
the Lancaster Theological Seminary ,
thanking us for Shenkel’s gift of $289 to
the Annual Fund for the Seminary. This
gift serves as an investment in the mis-
sion to educate women and men to God’s service in our churches and communities.
PAGE 5 CHURCH NEWS….
30 hour Famine
Recently , Shenkel members partici-
pated in the 30 hour famine which
started on Friday the 29th of April
and lasted to mid day Saturday the
30th. Along with Shenkel, other
churches from the Southeast Conference came to join the fun
and togetherness. $266 was raised by Shenkel‟s youth for
World Vision. Thank you.
Supporting Shenkel were three of this year's Confirmands; Ka-
leena Sweinhart, Julianne Wanner, and Ben Mocarski along
with Alex Marcoski, and Cameron Dushanko, Mrs. Sherri Mo-
carski and Pastor Bonnie. Each one of us from the youth
group had a wonderful time getting to know new people and
truly understanding what it is like to go without food for 30
hours.
Submitted by Cameron Dushanko
JoAnne, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints and faithful
brothers and sisters in Christ in Shenkel, UCC: Grace to you and peace from
God our Father. In my prayers for you I always thank God, the Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, for I have seen your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that
you have for all the saints, and for each other. You have heard hope in the word
of the truth - the gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and grow-
ing in the wider community, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from
the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God (Adapted from Colossians 1:1-6).
I truly do thank God for you. As a ministerial student who would be passing quickly through your church life I
was overwhelmed by both the warm welcome I received and the sincerity of the warm words of well-wishers
when my time with you had ended.
I saw by your works that church is not just Sunday mornings. The importance of church in and as community is
witnessed by the group meetings of congregation members with similar interests and your inter-church involve-
ment with Lunch Bunch and your commitment to the important work accomplished through The Pottstown Clus-
ter.
I am thankful to Shenkel UCC for its role as an educational church and especially for the opinions and support
of the Lay Committee from which I received valuable, objective feedback, and Pastor Bonnie for graciously tak-
ing on the additional role of modeling her important role in the ministry of a Parish.
My time spent in Shenkel community has led me to discern, without further questioning, my calling. I will soon
begin 10 weeks of CPE (clinical pastoral education) at Phoebe in Allentown, after which I will seek a pastoral
position in a Nursing Home or Hospice.
Again, thank you for your ministry to Seminary students as they fulfill a Field Education requirement.
I will not forget my experience in the light of Shenkel UCC, nor the warmth, support and caring of the Shenkel
community.
God Bless,
JoAnne
Shenkel UCC says
THANK YOU, and bids
farewell to Lois Baker, who
wrapped up her service as our
volunteer Bell Choir Director on
Sunday, May 22.
From a few interested people
who learned about ringing by playing with Lois' own
bells, under her leadership and the assistance of her
son, Keith, the Bell Choir grew into an intergenera-
tional group who inspired the congregation to pur-
chase hand chimes and tables of our own! During
her three-plus years with us, Lois also filled in for a
time as an Interim Chancel Choir Director while that
position was vacant. Thank you, Lois, for sharing
your gifts and your passion for music with Shenkel
UCC!
FOR YOUR INFORMATION….
IT‟S THAT TIME AGAIN….
June 5th will be “Report Card Day” for
the adult class as we dismiss for the
summer. Sunday School classes will
resume in September, and we invite all
to join us at 9:30 on Sunday mornings in the social hall.

June we will meet on Tuesday the 14th and 28th. In
the month of July we will meet on Tuesday the 12th
and 26th at 9:30 in the Church Social Hall. As always,
we welcome anyone interested in learning the art of
quilting. No experience is needed, just bring your scis-
sors, needle and thread and a willing heart.
We will not meet during the month of August..
Have a great summer!

Summer worship begins on Sunday, June 19th with ONE
SERVICE at 9:30 a.m. INSIDE. Sunday, June 26th will be the same.
Beginning on July 3rd, we will worship at 9:30 a.m. in the Grove, weather permitting. Summer worship is informal – lawn chairs and beach blankets are welcome!
In preparation for the 2011-2012 school year, we are looking
for Sunday School Teachers, and for those who would be willing
to substitute, if necessary. If you are interested, please con-
tact Stacia Bradley at [email protected] or call her at
610-310-2721.
Reminder….Sunday School‟s First Annual Art
Show will be held Saturday, June 11th at 6:30
PM. Come and enjoy all the wonderful art cre-
ated by our young people.
Summer Peace Services
During the summer, our monthly Peace Service will move outside to the Grove, weather per-
mitting, and will continue to be held on the fourth Sunday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
If you‟ve never attended this contemplative service of worship, plan to take a break from
your busy schedule and join us over the summer. There is plenty of time for quiet meditation
and prayer; the repetitive Taizé style chants and candle light (along with the bird songs and
wind rustling through the trees) help create a peaceful and reflective setting for worship.
Communion is offered to everyone at every Peace Service. Hope you can join us.

ADMINISTRATIVE NEWS….
SAVE-A-TAPE
PROGRAM
Keep up the good work! Just ask
for a Save-A-Tape card at the cus-
tomer service spot at your local
Redner‟s store, show your card at
the register when you check out,
then bring your register tapes to
church and deposit them in the box in the Narthex. These
tapes are collected routinely, presented to the store, and
Redner‟s donates a percentage of your total purchase to
the church. Be careful to bring your tapes in regularly in-
stead of saving them at home, as they do expire if not re-
deemed within a certain time period. Also, please return
the entire register tape. Redner‟s will not accept any regis-
ter receipt that has any part of it removed.
Thank you.

Thank you, everyone!
Thank you to all who brought towels and news-papers in for our confirmation project! We made several trips to Diane's to deliver your kind do-nations. Everyone in Diane's ( the employees
and the animals) really appreciated everything.
Thank you again!

Thank you so much for supporting the 2011 American Cancer Soci-
ety’s Daffodil Days Campaign. Through the Daffodil Days
program, the American Cancer Society is able to bring hope
to cancer patients right in our community.
Through the effort, the 2011 Montgomery
County Daffodil Days campaign raised more
than $103,000 this year. Thank you again for
your commitment to the fight against cancer.

JULES‟S CONFIRMATION
PROJECT…
For my confirmation project,
my mentor and I thought it would be a good idea
to do something with the labyrinth. After much
thought, we had a great idea. It‟s called a prayer
box. Now, you‟re probably wondering what that
is. The prayer box that I will make will be placed
somewhere near the labyrinth. Inside will be
note cards and some pencils. Now here‟s where
you come in…Anytime you are walking the laby-
rinth, or just want to stop by the box, you can
write down the name (and any other details you
would like to include) of someone in need of
prayers. (Please be sure you have the person‟s
permission before giving their information.) You
can also take a card that has been written on,
and pray for the person on the card! If you have
any questions about my project, feel free to ask.
I hope you enjoy the prayer box!

Forty tickets have been set aside for August 4th - a Thursday night. Fire-works and someone from Shenkel will pitch out a ball. The cost will be $9.00, which includes transportation. Watch for the sign up chart that will be in the Narthex in June. More information will follow, or con-tact your resident Phillie Phanatic - Ann Baccari.
Young at Heart
Supper Club
Shenkel's Young at Heart Supper
Club will meet on the third
Tuesday of each month at 5 pm ,
beginning on Tuesday, June 21st.
Here's the way this will work -- you submit, to the church
office, your name (or names if you'd like to be assigned with
a partner or spouse) AND the name of at least one restaurant
you'd enjoy dining at. The names and restaurant names will
be placed in a box. On the Sunday before the third Tuesday,
5-7 names will be drawn randomly, along with a restaurant
name, and posted in the narthex. Everyone who does not put
a check next to their name on that Sunday (indicating that
they have seen the assignment) will receive a phone call in-
forming them of the others in their group, and the name of
the restaurant their group will be dining at. Everyone is re-
sponsible for their own transportation to and from the restau-
rant (feel free to arrange a carpool with someone else in your
group!) and for the cost of their own dinner.
ALL submitted names will be included in a group, and all
names will go back in the box and be re-shuffled and re-
assigned each month. New folks can join the “club” at any
time; if you have submitted your name as a “member” of the
“club,” please let the church office know if you will not be
available on any given month.
The Young at Heart Supper Club is open to young-at-heart
adults of any age who enjoy eating out and would like to get
to know other Shenkel members a little better! Join us!

STEWARD’S CORNER
Do you remember that movie “Fiddler
on the Roof? That‟s one of my favorite
movies with some of my favorite songs.
I especially like the one called
„TRADITION”
If you were in church on Mother‟s Day, you
noticed a table filled with beautiful flower
plants. Pastor Bonnie announced that they
were a gift from Barry and Lisa Yocom
in memory of their mothers, and each woman
in attendance was to select a plant to take home.
Barry told the congregation that it is a
TRADITION that began in 1953 by his great
grand-parents and continued by his parents
and that now his family carries on this
special tribute and memory of love.
I imagine that many families have their own
special traditions, and I think that is a wonderful
way to keep connected and to emphasize the “tie
that binds” each member of the family in true
and lasting love.
Thank you, Yocom family, for your generosity
and reminder of the value of family and
traditions.
Love,
Sentimental Steward
Music News for June
The Cancel Choir welcomed a new member this past month. Sonya Ewert is singing with our soprano sec-tion and is a welcomed addition to our little group. There is always room for more, so please consider joining us next season starting in September.
As our summer grove services start soon, we’re looking for people who would like to give their musical talents during the services beginning on June 19. While we’re still inside through the end of June, we need a few of our talented
members to step up and provide special music for these services. Please contact Joan Johnson directly if you are willing to share your talents this summer.
Twice this summer, we are having an easy choir selection where we will practice before the service at 8:45, and then sing the same day. Anyone from Celebration Choir age and up is welcome to sing with us. Dates are July 10th and August 14th…if you’re around those weekends, please come and sing with us. It will be lots of fun!
Susan Royer will be filling in for Joan on Sunday June 19th
and 26th as the Johnsons head to South America to visit Peru and Ecuador. Please welcome Susan and thank her for helping out while we’re gone.
Tuesday Talking
“Jesus lived with the awareness that God is doing something, right here, right now, and anybody can
be a part of it. He encouraged his listeners to search, to question, to wrestle with the implications of
what he was saying and doing. He inspired, challenged, provoked, comforted, and invited people to
be open to God‟s work in this world. Wherever he went, whatever he did, Jesus started discussions
about what matters most, because for Jesus, God is always inviting us to open our eyes and join in.
NOOMA is a series of short films that explore our world from a perspective of Jesus.” (excerpted
from Nooma.com)
You are invited to view these films and join the discussion on Tuesday evenings, July 12 - August 23,
from 7 – 8 pm. Weather (and bugs) permitting we‟ll meet in the pavilion (otherwise, we‟ll meet in the Social Hall), watch a
10 minute film together, and spend the remainder of the hour discussing its implications for our lives as followers of
Jesus.
Come for one week, or every week – your spiritual life is sure to be stimulated by these thought-provoking evenings!
Speak with Dave Derman or Pastor Bonnie for more information.
God is like GENERAL ELECTRIC …. He brings good things to life.
Healing Prayers
We have healing prayers during both services on the second Sunday of each month. It is our hope that you will use this op-portunity to participate. During the collection of the of-fering, anyone who desires prayer for themselves or on behalf of another is invited to come to the front of the church, where a prayer team will join you for prayer. A prayer team will also be available in the front of the church at the conclusion of the service. Healing prayers are also offered the third Thursday of every month at 9:15 a.m. in the sanctuary. Anyone in need of prayers for themselves or on behalf of an-other is welcome !

DO YOU REMEMBER THIS
FINE CANINE FELLOW? You may remember seeing his “baby pic-
ture” back in 2008. He is Shenkel’s very
own Pennies for Puppies Seeing Eye
sponsored pup, Hamlin. Hamlin has com-
pleted all phases of his training and has
graduated the program with flying colors.
He is now the eyes of a 37 year old
woman in Florida. Congratulations, Ham-
lin, Shenkel is proud of you!
