FROM THE PRESIDENTNow that we are just over half way through the 2010 season, I think its worthwhile to take some time to re-‐view what we have achieved so far and to look forward to what we want to do for the rest of the year and be-‐yond.
On-$ield performance.
The table below shows the ladder position of SUHC’s 38 teams as of round 10/. It’s fair to say that our overall performance year to date has been mixed although there are some shining lights that augur well for the rest of the season and beyond.
Without doubt our MSL2 team has done well with 9 wins from 10 games and the squad is now consistently playing quick ball movement hockey that is reminiscent of state league 1 standard. Newly promoted MPA has won 3 games and this young but competitive team is gradually Rinding its feet in what is a very demanding grade. MPC is in a similar situation as MPA and is only 3 points of 4th posi-‐tion despite being 9th. MPE has con-‐solidated its position and remains in touch with the four, as does MM1E. Both MM2 S and MM3S are Rirmly in the top group while MMS4 continues to battle for regular numbers and wins.
It is fair to say that SUHC’s women’s section has had a difRicult Rirst half of the season with no teams in the four at the moment. Player unavailability, injury, retirement, and defection at the top end of the women’s section has had a dramatic effect on numbers for all teams and led to the dropping of our WM1N side at the beginning of the year.
WSL2 has struggled to win consis-‐tently so far this year but remains in touch with the top four while WPA faces a difRicult season despite play-‐ing some good hockey at times. WPC is reasonably placed for a possible Rinals berth, as does WMS3 while WMS1S needs to grab a few wins in
the second half of the season to avoid relegation.
It needs to be said that despite a tough start to the season, now is the time for the women’s section as a whole to rally around and work hard for each other both at training and on game day and show the resilience and strength of character from which success will ultimately come.
SUHC’s junior players are the future lifeblood of our club and our juniors have gradually improved over the season with our U17 and U15 groups now starting to show their true abili-‐ties with some much-‐improved per-‐formances. Our U13s have struggled especially in the top grades but will beneRit from the experience while our U11s and U9s have clearly demon-‐strated that they will be a force to be reckoned with both now and in the future.
SUHC’s Vets A is Rirmly ensconced in the four while Vets B remain 9th but less than two games from the four. Similarly Vets CE and EE are having fun and can make Rinals with im-‐proved performance in the 2nd half of the season.
Junior and young player develop-ment - McKenzie’s Clinics and Southern United Hockey Academy
The club will continue to develop our junior players with the highly suc-‐cessful McKenzie’s Clinics, which will be held later this year with many thanks to McKenzie’s Foods for their continued support of SUHC.
In addition the SUHC executive is pleased to announce that it has en-‐dorsed the establishment of the Southern United Hockey Academy (SUHA).
The SUHA has been established so that the club can continue to develop young players of both sexes who have demonstrated potential to excel at state league and above levels, so that these players will continue to be in-‐
tegral to SUHC’s success as a SL1 club in the future.
An agreement in principle has been reached with former Victorian Insti-‐tute of Sport head coach John Mowat to direct this program for the next 3 years.
The SUHA will cater for a wide age range of talented young players and an information pack on how the pro-‐gram will operate will be released shortly. It is intended that the SUHA program will commence before year-‐end
You will of course have noticed that Farm Road resembles a building site at the moment as the City Of Kingston Rinish repairs to the terracing. The repairs are expected to take another week or thereabouts so please be mindful of this as you move around the Farm Road Pavilion.
Congratulations to Rob Dalton who has recently been appointed to the board of Hockey Victoria. Rob has extensive business and hockey expe-‐rience at the elite level and will no doubt serve Victorian hockey well in his new role.
Finally, here a couple ofdates to put in your diaries.
• SUHC Trivia Night Saturday 31st July 2010 at Farm Road. This is a big fundraising night for the club and has always been a lot of fun. This years host is Essendon and Geelong football legend John Barnes
• Round 17 on 21st August 2010, $1000 day and the 21st Birthday party for SUHC’s Farm Road pavilion and ground. This will be the big-‐gest club function for the year and all members and their families are invited to join in the fun.
Please stay tuned for more details over the coming weeks.

WOMEN’S SECTION
Every player, coach and administrator in the women's sec-‐7on has been working extremely hard throughout the first half of the season in what is proving to be a challenging year of development for the sec7on. In the last few weeks there have been signs that this hard work is paying off and results on the field are star7ng to improve as well. The women's sec7on has undergone a couple of changes in the first half of the season, most notably the reduc7on of the number of teams that we are fielding, ensuring that all teams have adequate numbers of players and the abil-‐ity to perform consistently every week. This should im-‐prove the enjoyment level of all players and enable coaches to mange their teams more easily. Some notable posi7ves so far this season include the de-‐velopment of juniors, with many playing 2 or 3 grades higher than last year and performing with improving con-‐fidence and skill level. The performance of Pennant C has been consistent and a great blend of youth and experience is really gelling together and enjoying their hockey. Coach of Metro 3, Chris7e Trost, has shown great enthusiasm and encouragement of all her players and they are performing very well on the field as well. I am sure the second half of the season will be more suc-‐cessful than the first providing everyone with reward for
hard work and hopefully some finals berths to top the sea-‐son off.Just a reminder that training is open to absolutely every-‐one, can be a great social and fitness workout and the re-‐
wards will be reached on the field if the effort is put in. Hope to see you all on the track in the next few weeks. Good luck to all teams for the final 8 rounds and see you all at trivia night on the 31st! TasWomens sec7on president.

MEN’S SECTION
At the half way point of my Rirst season as Men’s President, there is a lot to be excited about. Plenty of good results on the Rield and lots of off-‐Rield plans that will improve the way we do things in seasons to come.
From an on-‐Rield perspective, the State League boys are on top of the ladder and playing some great hockey. I think we all expected the team to do very well in State League 2, but the style of hockey they have been playing in the last few rounds is really exciting and should stand them in good stead in future. A real tribute to all involved.
The promotion this year to Pennant A is something that the Men’s section had been working towards for many seasons now, although we were under no illusions as to how difRicult the competition would be. At the midpoint of the season, the boys have had 3 wins and are sitting in 8th spot on the ladder. While these results may not sound encouraging, the team has really stepped up on the training track and put in consistently good performances throughout the season. A comparable second half of the season and the team will be well placed to push up the ladder.
At the other end of the scale, the Metro 3 and Metro 4 teams have introduced plenty of our promising Junior members to Senior hockey. The Metro 3 group, coached by Graham Wilson, is sec-‐ond on the ladder and playing some excellent hockey. Graham is doing a great job with this group and if they continue to develop, they will only get better and possibly challenge for the Rlag.
The Metro 4 team have struggled on the ladder, but have now introduced a whole group of Under 15 players to Senior hockey. The introduction of young players to Senior hockey is a vital part of the development of our Club and critical to the per-‐
sonal development of these young players. I look forward to seeing these guys develop as the season progresses. Many thanks to Warren Davey who has
encouraged these young guys to step up to Senior hockey.
Off the Rield, w e h a v e plenty to do and I know we won’t get it all done this year, but I ’ v e b e e n r e a l l y e n-‐couraged by the number o f p e o p l e wh o h a v e b e e n p r e-‐
pared to get involved in driving the Men’s section and more importantly, our Club forward.

JUNIOR STATE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Last week the Junior State Hockey Championships were held at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. It was an exciting week featuring some great hockey. The regional team for our area is the Southern Metro Sharks. All sharks teams gave it their best and did very well. In each age group there were ten teams (Rive metropolitan and Rive country teams). The Under 15 girls sharks Rinished 3rd, the Under 15 boys sharks Rinished 5th, the Under 13 girls sharks Rinished 5th and the Under 13 boys sharks Rinished 5th. Well done to all juniors who participated in this tournament and hopefully they will have learnt some new skills.
