Year 11 Prom Night June 2004Year 11 Prom Night June 2004Year 11 Prom Night June 2004Year 11 Prom Night June 2004
Thursday 17th June saw Kings Norton High School say a
final farewell to this year’s Year 11.
Well, 2004 prom night was a total success. Everybody
turned up in their fancy attire. The girls looked glamorous
and the boys all looked very handsome. Even the teachers
looked respectable!
The prom started at 7:30pm at Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
Everyone arrived in style, two girls even went out and
hired a Limousine. When everyone arrived it was like they hadn’t seen each other in
a long time. The music was pulsating and the atmosphere was intoxicating. Everyone
was either inside dancing or outside chatting and getting some fresh air.
Half way through the night there were presentations to thank those who organised
the evening. Local DJ Dean was thanked for all his hard work, Mr Wemyss and
Emma Morris were awarded for the efforts they went to organising the prom. Stu-
dents were also awarded for their help in the organisation. There was a raffle for all
students and a surprise from the teachers who had ordered a cake for us all. It was
lovely.
The night sadly ended at 11.30pm and everyone had to say
their good-byes. It was quite upsetting saying good-bye to
people we aren’t going to see again.
We would just like to say that everyone looked absolutely
but we would especially like to mention two girls and two
boys that we feel looked truly amazing. For the young men
we have to say Mr Michael Borne and Mr Christopher
McCarl. For the young ladies we would like to say Katie
Hackett and Charlotte Hinde … but as we’re writing this
we are going to have to choose two others. So, for the
girls we’ll say Miss Clair Lowdell and Miss Dannielle Sykes.
Just to add that we all had a lot of photographs taken by professional photogra-
phers and hopefully we will be receiving them very soon! Finally, a big thank you to all year 11 who turned up and made the night what it was.
And a big thank you to all the staff and teachers involved in organising the night
and coming along to join in
the fun. It is a night that
none of us will forget
—so Thanks again!

The PE department have reason to celebrate as we reach the end of this aca-demic year. Being awarded the Sports Mark has meant the appointment of a Schools Sports Co-ordinator and our involvement with QCA’s investigation of the effects of PE has meant the creation of 12 student Sports Mentors. This has helped to boost the pro-
file, aspirations and confidence of the department , staff and most importantly the Student Mentors.

Combined Studies Trip to France This summer a group of students in years 7, 8 and 9 will be travelling to France to
explore and study French culture. They will travel by coach and ferry to Normandy and stay in an
educational centre, next to the beach, near Caen. The centre facilities include games and activi-
ties for the students to enjoy.
During their time in France the group will practice their French language skills, visit a
seaside town, experience a Calvados distillery, and visit Bayeux where they will see the
Tapestry, and visit a museum. Students will also spend time at a War Graves Cemetery
where they will see the commemorations after the 60th anniversary of D-Day at Arro-
manches. A visit to Pegasus Bridge is also part of the schedule.
Later in their stay the group will visit famous artist Monet’s, house and gardens and have
a chance to practice their own artistic skills.
During the 5 day visit, students cover much of the curriculum
including: Art, Modern Foreign Languages, Geography, History and even Food
Technology, when they sample the delicious French crepes and glaces!!
Finally the students will stay for one night in Paris. Here they will have
the opportunity to visit some of the wonderful sights found in this roman-
tic city.
A whistle stop tour of a hypermarket in Calais will be the final destination before
boarding Le Shuttle for their journey home.
During the trip the group will complete a holiday diary of activities and have the oppor-
tunity to make new friends, take photos and enjoy a totally
difference experience.

Sports Mentoring
In recent weeks the school has been involved in two festival activities, involving local primary schools. Both have been a huge success thanks to our new sports mentors. The 1st was a football Euro 2004 festival with each primary school being allocated a country and taking part in a 6-a-side competition. Around 120 students took part. Our mentors took on the challenge of refereeing. The 2nd event was an Olympic festival at the Alexander Stadium. Mentors helped with event organisation & supervised younger students.

Skill Force Residential 15th June—18th June 2004
The purpose of this residential was primarily to cover the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, which requires the pupils to carry out a practice expedition. The students: Daniel Clarke, Daniel Maskell, Perry Thomas, Ricky Worton, Jason Lewis and Simon Saunders camped at Beaudesert on Can-nock Chase, Staffordshire, where they had hands on experience in living under canvas, outdoor cooking and following a route (map reading), whilst carrying the necessary equipment!
They also had the opportunity to take part in a number of adven-ture training activities including raft building, abseiling and a con-servation programme. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and participated in the activities with great enthusiasm. Narinder Chohan, Alternative Curriculum Mentor
