From the President:
Hi everyone.
We hope you are all enjoying plenty of great rides over summer!
Please remember to always wear your PFD even when launching and retrieving your ski at the ramp or
the beach.
People sometimes forget that it is mandatory to wear them at all times when operating a PWC.
A simple error but it can become a costly one if penalties are applied by MAST or Tas Police for this
inattention.
Keep riding and keep safe and we look forward to seeing you all on the February rides that are
mentioned in this newsletter.

Recent Ride to Bruny Island by Lou Reid
Well….where should I start….we were driving to the boat ramp at Rosny on 3rd January and I was feeling a few
butterfly’s. Not really sure why as I don’t usually get nervous. Perhaps it was the not knowing what to expect, what
was expected of us, or even the wonder or who would be there.
We pulled into the car park to the ramp and I immediately saw a couple of skis in the water already and quite a few
others parked and ready to launch. Damian and myself pulled up and started to get organised also. Within a couple
of minutes we were greeted with many smiles, hellos and self-introductions. My butterfly’s immediately
disappeared and I felt at ease and very welcomed. The formalities were completed and a trip briefing took place by
the lead rider for the day, Deano. Within half an hour, we were on the water and ready to head off.
All seven Seadoos and five Yamahas left Rosny to head across the Derwent to Taroona for a head count and to
touch base. The Derwent was a little choppy and a few skis required a couple of stops on the way back to Kettering
to adjust the jerry cans strapped to the back of the skis. We arrived in the calm sheltered waters of Kettering
Marina. We moved slowly through the marina taking in the views of the larger forms of water transport.
From there, we headed down the channel to Alonnah for lunch and a drink. It became obvious, to be part of the
club, Tim Tams are a must with both Pete & Mitch having supplies. For me, white Tim Tams will have to be added
to the grocery list!
Once lunch was finished, we headed off to the Duck Pond at Bruny Island. A quick refuel for some and back on the
skis to bottom end of Opossum Bay we went. Pete had his new Seadoo 300 RXP out and offered a few people a go.
The consensus seemed to be that it was a “rocket”.
From there, on eastern side of the Derwent back to Rosny boat ramp we headed. We passed through Howrah
Beach and Bellerive Beach to meet at the point of Bellerive Bluff. A quick discussion and head count took place and
we decided to head back across the Derwent to mosey around the wharf on the final day of The Taste. Back across
to Rosny we went.
WOW what a great day…not sure if my muscles thought the same thing the following few days.
Thanks for an awesome day. See you on the next ride!
Lou & Damo.
It was great to have you guys with us on your first club ride. Also on their first club ride were Ken Upchurch and Ken
Collier. We welcome all new members and hope they enjoy the rides, form great friendships and have a long and
satisfying association with the club. Cheers, Dave
Bruny Island Ride
Safety Essentials
As noted in a previous newsletter, most light trailers do not comply with Australian Standards – even new ones!
The welded link on the safety chain attached to the drawbar must not come into contact with the road if the
coupling comes off so we strongly recommend adding a second chain and additional support around the coupling.
Lastly, check your lights, wheel bearings, split pin and wheel nuts before you reload your ski at the ramp and drive
away. It’s sad to think there are so many idiots about with nothing better to do than mess with us and other
boaties. Might be timely to have a few spare wheel nuts and a split pin stored in the boot of your car?? Take care,
be aware! Don’t let your awesome ride be ruined driving to or from the ramp.
Please remember the 5 knot rule when within 60 metres of a wharf, jetty, mooring, the shoreline or another boat.
This speed limit also applies when within 120 metres of a swimmer, diver (showing flag) or wader. Freestyling is not
permitted within 200 metres of a swimmer or 200 metres of the shore if a dwelling is within 100 metres of that
shoreline. (Source MAST website)
New Member Profile
Ken Upchurch from Launceston
Hi I'm Ken, and I'm so glad I joined the Tas Jet Sports Boating Club.
I've been Jet-skiing for about 6 or 7 years, I got hooked when my son and I did a jetski Safari when on
holidays in QLD some years ago.
I just had to get one, so purchased a second hand Kawasaki 150 Ultra; in November 2015 I upgraded
to the current model Yamaha FXHO and gee I'm so glad I did; there's no comparison between the old
2 stroke, and the modern 4 stroke.
I joined the club so I could learn from like-minded people, who also enjoyed the sport, and to
participate in outings, it can get a little boring going out on your own some of the time!
I certainly wouldn't have ventured to some of the locations I've already experienced without being a
member of such a club; and I can't wait to join in more club rides to experience the many waterways
we have, and to get to know the other members.
It's been all positive for me so far, and I look forward to many great summers out on the water, near
and far.

Upcoming Club Ride Pirates Bay to Tasman Island
When February 6; Saturday
Where Pirates Bay to the Hippolyte Rocks, Tasman Island and return. This is regarded by most as the
premium ride not to be missed with spectacular formations, caves, arches, cliffs and plenty
of wildlife along the way.
Ride Distance 90-110km so depending on weather conditions most skis should be able to complete this ride on a
tank, but an additional 20 litres of fuel would be good for safety reasons.
Arrive At Pirates Bay boat ramp EARLY. Upon arrival locate ride coordinator (look for PWC TAS flag) for
registration and payment before launching your ski. Pirates Bay has three ramps and can be
extremely busy. There is a beach beside the ramp to pull your ski up to or use your anchor bag. Car
parking is a premium so be early and Deano can fit a dozen cars and trailers in his shack DOO Me
which is 500 metres back up the road. It would be good to make use of this to free up the ramp for
other users as we expect there will be plenty of boats out.
Briefing 9am briefing on the beach next to our skis and be all ready to depart for the ride by 9:30am
Conditions On the south east coast can be pretty good if wind is a favourable direction. It will take a dirty day
to stop this ride - cross your fingers for conditions out of the SW to NW.
Weather As this is an open water ride we recommend one rider per ski. Meteye forecast on 30/1/16 for
6/2/16 looks breezy down near the island. We also strongly recommend that you team up with a
buddy to ride close to each other. This ride is one of the best but could also be the most
dangerous! If the swells are large, don’t venture into the caves!
Ride Summary We will leave Pirates Bay at 9.30am heading south past Tasman Arch, Waterfall Bay, out to the
Hippolytes, then further south to Tasman Island returning via the coast past the Candle Stick, to the
beautiful Fortescue Bay for lunch then back to Pirates Bay. This ride is a must for all ski owners
wanting to experience a truly beautiful piece of the Tasmanian coastline. Hopefully we will see
whales, dolphins, sea eagles and seals, a good camera is a must and plenty of great shots will be
had. This ride will excite your senses for adventure. Please note that we must keep our distance
from whales and dolphins and travel slowly if they surface near us.
Experience Intermediate
What to Bring Pack some lunch, a drink and appropriate clothing. As we are off the coast of Tasmania, a wet suit,
wetsuit boots and gloves are recommended.
Safety All MAST approved safety equipment must be carried at all times. Check your PWC requirements
on the MAST website.
Accommodation The Lufra Hotel at Eaglehawk Neck has rooms starting from $90. Ph 6250 3262
RIDE CO-ORDINATOR Deano Haley 0413 926 350 – register for the ride on the club Facebook page and watch for
any updates.
Essentials Apart from your own safety gear and the abovementioned items, to come on a club ride
you must also:
• Be a financial member and sign the club waiver
• Supply and wear your own orange hi vis vest (leaders and sweeps will wear green)
• Have your own insurance (even if you choose not to insure your ski, you must at least have
3rd party property & liability to protect others in the event you damage their craft or injure
someone)
Upcoming Event HOBART REGATTA
Where and when February 7th; Sunday Hobart Regatta @ the Domain
Ride distance As this is a localised ride day no additional fuel should be required.
Arrive Arrive at the Domain boat ramp early and be ready to go by 10:45am. The Domain boat ramp has
two ramps with a centre pontoon.
Summary Rides for the public so bring every size PFD as the kids love it!
Experience Any rider skill level is welcome.
When February 8th; Monday
Arrive 9am at Domain ramp to support the Trans Derwent Swimmers from Montagu Bay to Regatta
Grounds. You can expect to be back at ramp by 1ish.
Summary Our purpose here is to pick up any swimmers who surrender in the water, so if you plan to bring a
spotter / passenger, you’ll need a 3 seater. If you have a spare PFD, bring it in the front of your ski
for the swimmer.
Safety All MAST approved safety equipment must be carried at all times. Check your PWC requirements
on the MAST website.
Accommodation Berridale Caravan Park is only 10 mins north of the city and has camp sites and Cabins and Barilla
Holiday Park on the eastern shore is also 10 mins from the Domain ramp.

Upcoming Ride Port Sorell to Ulverstone
Where and When February 20th,Saturday. Port Sorell to Ulverstone, Pedro’s for lunch and return.
Ride distance 80-90 km All skis should make this distance without the need for extra fuel
Arrive Port Sorell boat ramp by 9am for a 9.30 departure on a ¾ high tide. Upon arrival locate ride
coordinator (look for PWC TAS flag) for registration and payment before launching your ski. This is
a dual ramp with centre pontoon. As this is a heavily used pontoon with a strong current, we
recommend pulling skis up on the beach next to the ramp. When launching please obey the 5 knot
rule amongst the moorings.
Conditions The Rubicon Estuary is good riding in most conditions, but Bass Strait can get choppy quickly.
Weather It will take a pretty bad day to stop this ride from going ahead; it may be altered on the morning as
to the direction of the ride.
Ride Summary We will leave Port Sorell ramp at 9.30 am and head to Bass Strait heading west to Ulverstone,
calling into the Mersey River on the way before continuing on to Ulverstone and exploring the
upper reaches of the Leven River, then stopping at the pontoon near Pedro’s for some lunch and a
drink, then returning to Port Sorell, with a quick look around the estuary then home. Pedro’s have
great fish and chips or you can bring your own lunch and drink.
Experience If the weather is good 2 up will be ok, for rider experience this would also be regarded as an
intermediate ride.
What to bring With the potential for a sea breeze a wetsuit is recommended, sunblock is a must and your wallet if
buying lunch.
Safety All MAST approved safety equipment must be carried at all times. Check your PWC requirements
on the MAST website.
Accommodation Port Sorell Lions club caravan club has camping sites Ph 6428 7267. And the Shearwater Country
Club has hotel rooms and a pool / sauna. Ph 6428 6205.

Upcoming Ride Lake Barrington
Where & When February 21st Sunday. Lake Barrington, near Sheffield. Travel on C141 to the ski section of the lake
(not the rowing course)
Ride distance 40-50km will pull the ride up but this will still take a couple of hours to enjoy all the beauty that this
lake offers. No extra fuel will be required.
Arrive At Lake Barrington boat ramp, 10am for 10.30 start. There is a rowing carnival on at the rowing
course this weekend, into the ride we will have to travel past the regatta so the 5 knot rule will
apply. Upon arrival locate ride coordinator (look for PWC TAS flag) for registration and payment
before launching your ski. Lake Barrington has 2 boat ramps on the Eastern side (Sheffield). Both
of these ramps are at the same turn off to the lake. If coming from Hobart turn off just before ETC
at Elizabeth town and follow the signs to Sheffield. Drive through Sheffield to the West Kentish
turnoff (C141) and follow road to West Kentish, Do not drive to the rowing course. Road C141 will
take you to the boat ramp. Those coming from the coast will come up through Spreyton on B14)
and turn into Barrington road then onto (C141) to the lake.
Conditions Being the middle of summer the lake could be as warm as 22-23 degrees, cross fingers for a sunny
day (great place for swimming and enjoying the waterfall)
Weather Weather can affect the lake but generally it should be perfect for a ride.
Experience As this is the northern invitation day we encourage all ski owners to attend. This will be a great day
to meet new riders and get accustomed to your new ski with a lot of help from experienced club
members. Definitely bring a friend with you as well as your biscuits, skis, and wakeboards.
What to bring It can get pretty warm around the lake on a nice day so bring sunblock and a hat.
Lunch A BBQ will be provided by the club. Just bring your own drinks.
Safety All MAST approved safety equipment must be carried at all times. Check your PWC requirements
on the MAST website.
