ATHITI MAT AAO
SomArea GM - Hospitality
There was a time in our lives not too far from 2020 when
anytime any guest used to visit us, all of us used to jump
up with joy and used to welcome the guest with an open
heart. The year 2020 has changed our way of life
completely and our hearts opened in many ways but
also closed in some. I would like to share a short story
based on the above: Maasi was the one who would visit
every year on Diwali and would bring sweets and gifts,
so as usual she called and informed that she would be
coming this year too. Every year there used to be so
much joy and happiness due to her visit but this time I
heard Mummy saying to her sister, not to come as she
might bring the virus along. Maasi was taken aback with
shock at how could she say this and two beloved sisters
had suddenly become bitter to each other. Mummy tried
to explain to her but Maasi was so hurt and offended
that she did not visit this year and everyone at home
missed the joy, laugher and happiness that used to be
there every Diwali. This Virus has definitely changed our
minds but not the heart. Irrespective of when we get rid
of this virus, the question now is will Masi be the same
again? How we have learnt to say Athithi mat Aao this
year! We all are praying to bring back all those
connections of our hearts which we have cut due to the
Corona virus this year.

5 TIPS FOR ATTAINING WORK-LIFE BALANCE IN HOSPITALITY
Shaila DhendeHuman Relations, Jakson Inns
Attaining equilibrium between personal and professional life is one of the biggest challenges for those
working in the hospitality, hotel, and tourism industry. The operational nature and culture of the sector in itself
demands long working hours, flexibility, occasional travel, and the ability to relocate if required. It's very likely
for employees to work through evenings, weekends, and special holidays in an industry that serves 24/7 every
day of the year. Challenging hours, mixed with a fast-paced environment, eventually contribute to work-related
stress and the fear of missing out on your social or family life. It takes time to figure out how to equally manage
all areas in our lives. To get started, here are a couple of tips to consider:
1. Balance isn't the right word. Try to think of it as work-life integration. In the past, the idea of balancing daily
hours between work and personal life seemed attainable. A work-life integration approach allows us to
prioritize and integrate both of these parts into our daily life and identity.
2. Unplug. Being constantly connected interrupts our time, presence, and mental state. Persistent work
notifications keep us glued to our phones and contribute to more stress in our free time. Just because
we're always online doesn't mean we always have to be accessible. If necessary, turn your phone off and
enjoy your day.
3. Practice self-care. Self-care prevents burnout, reduces stress and helps refocus on work. Practice it by
taking the time to do activities that make you happy and fulfilled. Read a book, exercise, or take-up a hobby!
Just remember, take out time for yourself, it will be rewarding in the long run!
4. Time management. Whether you're trying to find the time to go to work, learn a new skill, or spend more
time with family, time management is the starting point to seeing your intentions come to life.
5. There is no end goal. You won't reach a finishing line of work-life balance and find everything is perfect. It's
something you work on every day. Rather than trying to balance everything at the same time, remember
that it is something much more fluid. Some days you'll do better than others, and that's okay. Allow
yourself the space to fail, and remember that tomorrow is another chance to try again.
