PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE! As you read this 2017 is upon us! Can you believe – 2017!! The ASSC is into its 32nd year! .. it is bigger and better than ever! I do hope you enjoy the year of art and fellowship which is ahead of us. Be thankful that we are Albertans, free to share our passion with our friends and the world! I thank all the members who assisted me in 2016 and have agreed to do so in 2017. Thank you so much for having faith in me to lead and keep the Society organized and busy in 2017! I do enjoy my position but will attempt to delegate more in 2017..so anticipate a call from me sometime! The list of accomplishments at the end of this Newsletter confirms we had a great 2016…thanks to a wonderful Board, great volunteers! Welcome to all new members, and Welcome to new Board members: Wally Lynds & Arlene Bowles. I look forward to working with you. Thanks as well to all the other Board members who are returning to make decisions throughout the year. At the January meeting, don’t forget to pay your membership for 2017 if you have not done so already (online or at the January 10th meeting), and sign up for a workshop or two. Also don’t forget to contact the ACACA and pay your membership so you can show this year. Every hour of volunteer time is very much appreciated in a Society as busy as this one, but involvement does not just mean volunteering, it also means being together in the Centre as often as possible to meet, share ideas, socialize, and just plain “talk about art” – and other stuff over a coffee and snacks. To all those travelling south and beyond this winter, our thoughts are with you. May you return safely to be with us.

Let’s be “friends in art” and let’s keep this Society one of the best!

Regards, Sonja

ACACA Show this Summer!

The Alberta Community Art Clubs Association will be holding their Alberta Wide Show at the Ottewell Centre from July 19 to August 13, 2017!!!

The artwork to be shown will be the winning entries from the Zone Shows (locations yet to be determined). There will be approximately 100 paintings coming into the Centre, and these will be juried further. The winning entries will be featured at the Alberta Spirit Show.

Members! You are encouraged to pay a membership to the ACACA before February 28, 2017 ($30) for entrance into the Northern and/or Central zone shows. This will allow you to enter up to 3 paintings in any of the zone shows. See acaca.ca for a membership registration form. We have had many members who have been juried as “winners” in their past shows. Hopefully the jurors will send your entry on to the Alberta Wide Show and who knows from there! Let’s support this Association in our own Centre during the summer of 2017!

VOLUNTEER HOURS: Please record your volunteer hours in the book located in the drawer to the left of the kitchen sink. These hours will enable you to show your artwork in 2017 & they are also part of the application for the ASSC’s

annual AFA grant. Volunteering with other member artists to produce an art project or event makes us a personal Society and not a business. Of course, it is a fact that not everyone can volunteer time, so your support of the activities of the Society is also much appreciated

EXPLANATION OF VOLUNTEER HOURS AND MEETING

If you have accumulated volunteer hours in 2016 and you pay your membership fee before January 31, 2017, 10 of those hours can be carried forward to 2017. If your fees are not paid by January 31, 2017 your 2016 accumulations will be lost and you will be required to record 20 hours of volunteer time and attend 3 meetings prior to showing artwork in the Spring Show or the Loft Gallery. If you do not intend to show artwork in the Loft Gallery or the Spring Show in 2017, then this ruling does not apply - BUT the Society would like to know that you are on board so you can participate in the Christmas Market and any other events that will be organized throughout the year. Also, if you are on the membership list,

you will receive the monthly newsletter to keep you up to date on happenings and news!!! Fees can be paid at the January 10th meeting, mailed to the ASSC (PO Box 3061, Sherwood Park, T8H 2T1) dropped off at the Ottewell Centre or phoned in to Sue at the office on any Monday or Wednesday afternoon from 12 to 4 pm. _

Happy New Year from the Library Committee.

We had a great year in 2016 and really enjoy working with you all. We added 74 new items to the library—55 books, 6 magazines, 12 DVDs and 1 Book/DVD combo. We bought 32 of these resources and generous members donated the other 42. Watercolour remains our most popular category, and we added 17 items there. However, Acrylic and Mixed Media are both gaining in popularity, and we expanded our library holdings there with books and DVDs. Those who are exploring Abstract works can find new resources under Miscellaneous and also under the different genres of art. Our plan for 2017 is to continue to listen to where you, the ASSC members, are taking your art (or where it’s taking you!). We’ll add resources to the library based on your recommendations, your feedback and what’s up-and-coming in the art world. Please let us know if there’s a book or DVD that you’d think other ASSC members will enjoy. If we buy the item on your say-so, you get to borrow it first. We’re looking forward to another wonderful art-filled year, and to seeing you all in the Library Corner at our meetings. Kind regards, The Library Committee.

Second Annual HIDDEN TREASURES OPEN STUDIO ART TOUR

June 24th and 25th, 2017 10 am to 5 pm

presented by the Art Society of Strathcona County

We are in the planning stages for the 2nd Annual Hidden Treasures Open Studio Art Tour!! This is a self guided tour of Strathcona County artists' working studios which is free to the public. Artists will be able to open up their creative spaces showing many works of art which will be for sale. Either open up your home studio or set up a booth in the Ottewell Center. All artists are required to be present for the duration of the tour. Home studios should have easy and safe access for the public and artists will need to ensure that they have liability coverage through their homeowner’s insurance policy. Artists are encouraged to hold their own door prize as a method of capturing email addresses for their mailing list. As per feedback from last year, we plan to allow participating artists to view all studios on the evening before the tour. On-line registration for both home and Ottewell Center artists opens February 1st. DUE TO LIMITED SPACE OF THE OTTEWELL CENTER, THE FIRST 10 ARTISTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Registration is open to all ASSC members. There is no limit to home studios participating. Cost of registration is $50 for home studios and $60 for the Ottewell Center. Registration, payment and a digital image of your art must be received by February 28th. There are no refunds of registration. Send your digital image to [email protected]. Additionally, contact Norma Callicott at 780 464 2519 with any questions you may have.
