As part of our community engaging workshops this term,

butcher Liam from The Warrnambool Meat Barn came along to show us how to create

three types of sausages.

The kids really enjoyed the hands on component and were

full of questions about the sausage making process. We

truly appreciate Liam coming all the way out to Woolsthorpe to

show us this new skill.

you teaching us to make croissants in our community engagement

workshop. The delicious croissants were devoured at the end of school!

LEARNING REFLECTIONS

Annual Report snapshots

We are proud of the achievements all our students are making in a variety of areas across the curriculum and we value the diverse range of opportunities our learners have in Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Technology, Creative Arts, Kitchen Garden, Language, Sports and various other topics. Teacher Judgment data indicates that our students are making expected growth from year to year. Consistently, students are achieving at or above levels in English and Mathematics, based on school assessments and data profiles. Our Early Years Reading level and comprehension data is reaching higher than expected targets with our Sounds Write program showing significant improvements in Spelling and Reading.

The evidence is clear. Our students feel stimulated and motivated to learn here at Woolsthorpe Primary School. They trust their teachers and feel supported in all areas of the school and their learning programs. Engagement across the school is extremely high for all learners as is evident in our student surveys. We are achieving well above state means and higher than all like schools in the Attitudes to School Survey. Our students feel connected in the community and at school. They trust staff and have very strong relationships with their peers and other parents in the school community.

We continue the implementation of our school Health and Wellbeing Plan with a focus on building Resilience in students, Physical activity and Health Promotion capacity building of all staff and students. These key actions draw on current practices and local context and is a bottom up approach, guided by research. Our Health and Wellbeing plan aims to build a school community of students, staff and parents who are happy, healthy and resilient, able to cope within our every changing world and thrive in their lives.

ZOO TRIPWhile it was a little disappointing we didn’t get to go to Werribee Zoo last Friday the decision to cancel was justified by the weather in the end. In all decisions like this safety comes first. We will re-schedule the excursion once we confirm a date that suits the Zoo

and let everyone know. A learning from last week when we had to cancel our trip was the importance of parents having the Flexibuzz App on their phone. We use the FlexiBuzz App as a messaging system for parents, for newsletters etc. and in this case it worked really well.

SWIMMING PROGRAMOur 8 day Swimming Program this term commences on Monday September 9th at the Warrnambool College pool, with all students participating under the tuition of Jayson Lamb and his instructors. A special timetable will operate at school during swimming, lunch times will vary in all grades, with no heat ups or lunch orders during these 2 weeks. Parent Information will go home next week.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCESIn term 1 and 3 we offer parents an opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher in the form of a Parent Teacher Conference. Parent Teacher Conferences are an opportunity to have a conversation about your child’s progress. Appointments are optional and may not be needed by all parents at this time. Appointment booking forms will come home soon. See dates below.

COUNTRY FAIR OCTOBER 20Over the coming weeks coordinators and parents will be starting to tick off their lists and planning for our Country Fair on October 20. Our Fair is a whole school community event, run by all our parents. The Country Fair weekend is a showcase of our school and is always a lot of fun for all involved. The money raised goes directly back into supporting every single student at our school. We cannot run our Country Fair without the support of all families and we thank all who are involved this year and have been working hard over the past year to get organised. If you have any questions please contact Suzi our Fair Coordinator.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PLANLast week we practiced our lockdown drill at school. Our emergency management plan covers area such as bushfires in the area, onsite fire, gas leaks, flood and emergencies, road accidents in the area, severe weather and storms, bus procedures in case of emergency and lockdown. We practice our evacuation and lockdown drills throughout the year so students are familiar with these processes. Our onsite evacuation point is the school oval for all internal emergencies like building fire, gas leaks or flood. In the event of all emergencies parents will be communicated with and informed about any outcomes. All decisions around emergency management are made to ensure the safety of students, staff and parents.

PARENTS OF BUS TRAVELLERS please note for safety reasons, if there is an emergency that effects our bus routes, like a road accident causing road closure, flood, bushfire in the area BUSES WILL NOT RUN. Students will be kept safe at school. Parents will be contacted via FLEXIBUZZ and asked to collect their children from school.

FATHER’S DAY STALL - Thursday 29th August Calling for donations of newspapers - the students will wrap their gifts a little differently this year. Please send in any newspapers you may have. Each student can shop for that special someone, $3.00 per student.We would also like to hear from you if you have the time to come in and help out at the stall, which is first thing in the morning on the 6th.

END OF TERM FOOTY COLOURS DAYTo celebrate the end of term 3 the PFA will provide a hot dog lunch and we need some helpers - please leave your name at the office if you are able to come in at 12 - 12:15pm to help cook and serve. Little ones most welcome. Early finish, 2:30pm.

BUTTERSCOTCH BISCUITS 125g butter 1/2 cup of firmly packed brown sugar 1 tablespoon of golden syrup 1 1/4 cups of SR flour

• Beat the butter, sugar and golden syrup in a small bowl.

• Stir in the sifted flour. • Roll into balls. • Place about 5cm apart on trays lined with

baking paper and flatten them slightly with a fork.

• Bake for 15 minutes at 180° * Makes approximately 12 biscuits

CARAMEL CUPCAKES 125g butter 1/2 cup of firmly packed brown sugar 2 eggs, separated 1 tablespoon of golden syrup 1 1/2 cups of SR flour 1/2 cup milk pinch of salt

• Cream butter and sugar with electric mixer, separate the eggs and beat the yolks into the butter mixture.

• Stir in the golden syrup then add the sifted flour and the milk.

• Whip the egg whites with the salt until stiff then fold into mixture.

• Put into patty cases and bake for 15-20 minutes at 180°.

* Makes approximately 12 cupcakes

MUESLI SLICE 1 cup of wholemeal SR flour 2 cups rolled oats 150g butter 1/2 cup of sugar 1 tablespoon of golden syrup

• Combine flour, oats and sugar in a bowl.

• Melt butter, add golden syrup to the butter then mix into the dry ingredients.

• Line a slice tin with baking paper then press into tin with the back of a wet spoon.

• Bake for 20 minutes at 160°.• Allow to cool slightly then cut into bars/slices.* Makes approximately 12 slices

CARAMUT AND DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB

“Spring has Sprung.” Flowers of bulbs, wattles, blossom trees, paddocks of yellow canola, flowering annuals and perennials all herald spring and new life

after the dullness of winter.

What flowers want is reasonably good soil which is easy to dig, fairly dark in colour and not boggy after lots of rain. Improve average garden soil by adding

organic matter - compost and well-rotted manure. Scatter a little controlled-release fertilizer around plants after planting and water over with a soluble fertilizer each month, starting two or three weeks

after planting. Me? I’m too lazy to do this and find the plants do ok. Perhaps not well enough to win any prizes at a show, but they look alright in the garden or

vase. When planting any new plants whether it be trees, shrubs or seedlings, it is most important to

water in well as it helps to settle the soil around the roots. Full sun for six hours a day is required as few

flowers bloom well in shade.

I do dehead the individual blooms on annuals as required as this keeps the plant looking good and the flowers keep on coming. Plants flower in order to produce seeds to keep the species producing, hence deheading means the plant has to keep producing

more flowers to keep the species thriving.
