Jeff Stangl, CFA Society New Zealand Chair, gives a member update on the
conclusion of the conference
Dear members
Last week’s conference was a phenomenal success for many reasons. It was fantastic to have
so many members attending and lots of new faces, especially young professionals and aspiring
students.
Networking is a valuable aspect of these events and it was good to see people reconnecting
and connecting. The wide range of speakers and topics provided something of interest for
everyone and the feedback has been very positive. We'll be making lots of content available,
including videos, presentations and interviews. Do utilise and share these resources.
A big thanks to all attendees, sponsors and contributors, for your important part in making it
happen. Now we can start thinking of ideas for the 2021 investment conference, it will be here
before we know it!
The 2019 Global CFA Society Leadership Conference recently took place in London, see
more info below. While in London, CFA Society NZ partnered with INFINZ and Massey
University to host a networking and educational event for our alumni. We had a fantastic
turnout with 65 attendees, all seeming to enjoy the evening. The panel discussion on the
‘Future of the Finance Profession’ comprised of four women in senior leadership roles across
the sector. We are very grateful to Royal Bank of Scotland CEO and kiwi Ross McEwan, for
generously hosting the event.
Also, please join me in congratulating our board member, Chelsea Leadbetter, CFA for
winning Emerging Leader of the Year, at the INFINZ awards. What a great inspiration for young
CFA charterholders and candidates out there.
Lastly, keep your ear to the ground with regards to CPD for CFAs, changes are on the way.
There’s an opportunity to have input into CFA’s CPD competency framework on 24 June, so
please find out more.
Best regards
Dr Jeffrey Stangl, CFA

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING
Women in Finance events at Lincoln and Canterbury universities
CFA continues to look at ways to encourage diversity in the finance sector and views active engagement
with students in the early stages of their careers as important. Our 2019 Women in Finance seminar
series kicked off with events at Lincoln and Canterbury university in early May – led by Brooke Roberts
(CEO and co-founder of Sharesies) and Chelsea Leadbetter. Discussions ranged from our career path to
date, advice looking back, challenges, support available, and how to encourage more women into the
finance industry – with great engagement and questions from the students. We look forward to hosting
more events through the course of the year!

2019 Global Society Leadership Conference, London
Earlier in May, 450 society leaders from 155 countries gathered for the annual conference. Representing
New Zealand was; Jeff Stangl (Chair) and Eric Wei (Director) - pictured below.
Key initiatives covered at the conference:
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
This was big topic of discussion, based on increasing expectations by regulators globally. Our society is
taking a leading role.
Computer-based testing
In 1963 CFA Institute administered the CFA Program exam to 284 candidates. In 2018 exam registrations
reached 319,000. CFA Program Level I will transition to computer-based testing (CBT) in 2021. No
decisions yet for Levels II and III.
Societies 2.0
This initiative empowers local societies through greater autonomy backed by additional funding and
staffing. Members can expect to see greater local brand visibility and initiatives such as the conference.
The Principles of Partnership and Operating Framework
Advocacy
A work stream has been established to focus on leveraging society volunteers globally to support policy
work. Annual society advocacy training sessions have been established in each region, with Society
Advocacy Advisory Committees in place to help set policies and priorities.

MEMBER PROFILE
Chelsea Leadbetter, CFA
Senior Equity Analyst
Forsyth Barr
Chelsea, CFA Society New Zealand
board member, is pictured with her
'Emerging Leader of the Year'
trophy, received at the INFINZ
awards, 22 May 2019.
What are some of your career highlights so far?
That is hard to narrow down, but one over-arching highlight reflecting back would be my
development both personally and professionally over the past 10 years or so since joining
Forsyth Barr straight out of university. The industry has provided a great learning environment
and I feel fortunate to have access to a wide array of senior leaders across various businesses.
Most recently being named Emerging Leader of the Year at the 2019 INFINZ awards was
definitely a clear highlight! Being recognised by your peers is a great feeling.
What do you like most about your job/industry?
It’s dynamic, fast paced, rewarding and challenging. You can wake up and think you’ve got a
plan for the day and then it can completely go out the window. That is exciting and there’s
always something more you can be doing or learning. The exposure to a wide range of
businesses, people and the healthy debates also keeps every day interesting.
What are your interests outside work?
Playing sport, time with family and reading a good book! We are also nearing the end of a
house build – so that has kept me busy.
Beyond my core role at Forsyth Barr, I also enjoy engaging with and helping to support/develop
the next generation through presentations at universities and high schools and
tutoring/mentoring various students. I find this particularly rewarding.
Make a prediction for 2024
Considerable advancement in healthcare, supported by new technology, innovation, and AI. NZ
has a number of successful examples on a global stage today (F&P Healthcare the most
obvious NZX-listed example) and I would expect to see further development over the next 5
years.
