In many traditions, seeing one’s own doppelganger is to be taken as a sign of bad luck, or even as an omen ofdeath. But artificial doppelgänger don’t have such negative denotations. They are considered mostly as tokens ofamusement or admired for their technical craftsmanship. The first what comes to mind when thinking ofdoppelgänger probably are wax sculptures as found in several museums worldwide. How good the resemblancemight be, superficial inspection easily reveals their nature. Try talking to them, or just touching them (though ofcourse don’t do this in museums).

How different it is nowadays with robot doppelgänger, modelled after living persons(robot twins). Most famous are undoubtedly the ones built by Professor HiroshiIshiguro, director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory of Osaka University. The firstsuch robot created by him in 2004 was called REPLIEE R1, modelled after his own 5-year old daughter. R1’s head could move in nine directions and her left arm was fullymobile, allowing her to make gestures. Additionally, four high-sensitive tactilesensors, placed under the skin on that arm, allowed her to react to different pressures– a gentle squeeze or a crushing grip for example.

A year later Ishiguro revealed REPLIEE Q1. She again was modelled aftera real human being, this time an adult woman. REPLIEE Q1’s far moreadvanced movements were made possible by motion-tracking studies ofhuman body movements, which were mapped into a computer, to be usedas the basic template for expression. Sadly, REPLIEE Q1 was not fullymobile either. She could only sit down, and interact from that position –standing and walking were beyond her. Her upper body is motivated bythirty-one actuators powered by compressed air, which allow natural,fluid movements from her upper half. REPLIEE Q2 was an “upgradedversion” of Q1, with even more degrees of freedom.

Shortly after, Professor Ishiguro finally cloned himself! Thisandroid, named GEMINOID HI-1, is again one step further in thedevelopment of robots exhibiting human-like behaviour. Lookat videos of his appearance and you will be amazed how naturalhe responds to touching his face, how he moves his lips whiletalking, how he blinks his eyes, and even seems to breathe. Andthe development of androids will continue in rapid pace,Professor Ishiguro assures us. He is convinced that one dayrobots will fool us into believing they are human. He believesthat it may prove possible to build an android that could passfor a human, if only for a brief period.

Professor Ishiguro was keynote speaker at the 2nd International Conference on Human-Robot PersonalRelationships in June this year (see pp. 102-104 for a report). As you can read from the report, this was asuccessful and very fascinating conference indeed.

Let me conclude briefly with another successful conference: BNAIC 2009. This issue only contains somesession reports and a report of the demo award, but the next issue will give you a more extensive coverage of theevent, including many more reports and many photographic impressions. Stay tuned!

It was extremely nice to see our association togetheragain at BNAIC-2009 in Eindhoven. In the capablehands of Karl Tuyls and Toon Calders and theirorganizational team, a great programme wascompiled that, as usual, offered a cross-section ofall things on AI in the Benelux. The two invitedtalks were impressive and enlightening, perhapsalso because of a feature they shared: visualisations.Enough said about the contents of BNAIC – theevent is discussed at large in this edition and thenext, by way of the session and track reports.

At the BNAIC we held our annual generalassembly, of which the notes can be found in thisnewsletter. Highlights were first that we welcomedtwo new members to our board: Koen Hindriks(Delft) and Richard Booth (Luxembourg), who willintroduce themselves next time in this newsletter.Second, the meeting approved (the University of)Luxembourg as the location of BNAIC-2010, afitting next step after we welcomed Luxembourg toour association last year. We discussed theassociation’s finances, and gave an overview of thesix events we sponsored in the last year as part ofour Benelux AI Event series – I repeat my invitationto consider having your AI-related event sponsoredby the BNVKI-AIABN!

As always, it was great to receive your input, ideas,and suggestions. You are in many ways theassociation, which binds together a meaningful setof research areas under the still valid and powerfulumbrella of AI.

In sum, we hope to see you at the Benelux AIEvents, and of course in Luxembourg for BNAIC-2010!

2. Minutes of the BNVKI General Assembly ofOctober 31, 2009

The minutes are approved.

3. AnnouncementsThe BNAIC’09 is very successful. The organisersreceived 117 submissions, of which 61 have beenaccepted for oral presentation, 36 as poster and 6demos. There are 152 participants, divided asfollows over the following countries: 116 NL, 26BE, 7 LUX and 3 others.

Antal van den Bosch asks whether the opinion aboutthe format of the proceedings has changed or do theparticipants still prefer to have the proceedings onpaper. Toon Calders replies that this seems still tobe the case, but confirms that the paper proceedingsrepresent an important part of the budget.

Jaap van den Herik believes that 4 locations fordemos, of which one is located outside theconference site, is not attractive because it makes itdifficult to visit all demos during the time allocatedfor the demo sessions. He asks if it would bepossible to have the demos running till the closingsession. Jos Uiterwijk suggests for the future to havethe slot for lunch and demos split up in two parts of45 minutes each. This should allow the participantsto have lunch, and attend and present the demos.

4. Financial report 2008Virginia Dignum, treasurer, reports on the financialsituation of the BNVKI. For the financial year 2008,the profit is higher than expected, viz. 7.259 Euro.This despite of the fact that from 2008 onwards, theBNVKI no longer receives an NWO subsidy. Thetreasurer also presents the budget for 2009, which isapproved by the General Assembly.

5. Auditing committee 2009The auditing committee, consisting of membersKatja Verbeeck (KaHoSt. Lieven Gent) and MartinCaminada (Université du Luxembourg, Luxem-bourg), checked the financial report and accorded it.The meeting thanks Katja and Martin for their workand discharges them. Treasurer Virginia proposesfor a new auditing committee, to check the financialreport to be delivered at the next General Assembly,to consist of Menno van Zaanen and Birna vanRiemsdijk. This proposal is accepted by theassembly.

6. Progress report 2009 and plans for 2010Antal van den Bosch reports on the activities of thepast year, November 2008 - October 2009, andpresents the current board members and the liaisons(ECCAI, NSVKI, and De Connectie). The NVSKIis again active with a new board. In spring 2010 astudent event will be organised. Hendrik Blockeel,

Board members and elections.There has been a call for new board members;based on the applications received the boardproposes: Richard Booth of the University ofLuxembourg and Koen Hindriks of the DelftUniversity of Technology as new board membersand Jos Uiterwijk, editor in chief of the newsletter,for a second term of 5 years. The new candidateboard members present themselves. The boardproposal is accorded with applause.

8. BNAIC’10The board is happy to announce that Richard Boothand Leon van der Torre of the Université de

Luxembourg have accepted to organize BNAIC2010. In the organisation the following teams willbe involved: The Interdisciplinary Lab forIntelligent and Adaptive Systems (ILIAS), ThePublic Research Centre Henri Tudor and TheInterdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability andTrust. Richard Booth and Leon van der Torreprepared a nice presentation on the prospectivevenue Kirchberg. The assembly applauds the offer.

Virginia Dignum asks to provide cheap registrationrates and accommodation for master students. Jaapvan den Herik raises the question of sponsoring.Sponsoring is expected from The National ResearchFund Luxembourg, but other potential sponsors willbe contacted.

BNAIC 2009: Session Reports

Agent-Based SimulationFrances Brazier

The session on agent-based simulation in differentdomains on Thursday was quite lively withinteresting discussions after each presentation withabout 20 participants.

The first paper Comparison of Agent-Based andPopulation-Based Simulation of Displacement ofCrime by Tibor Bosse, Charlotte Gerritsen, MarkHoogendoorn, Syed Waqar Jaffry, and Jan Treur,presented by Charlotte Gerritsen, did justice to itstitle. The paper compared the results of apopulation-based system to an agent-based systemdesigned with the same knowledge in a simulationand formally analysed a number of properties ofboth systems. The results were comparable, theagent-based system slower. A good baseline forfuture research in which the attractiveness of alocation can be modelled using a wider variety ofagents.

The second paper Using Agent-BasedOrganisational Models for Crisis Management byThomas Quillinan, Frances Brazier, HuibAldewereld, Frank Dignum, Virginia Dignum, LorisPenserini, and Niek Wijngaards presented byThomas Quillinan, modelled different groupsinvolved in crisis management at different levels inthe organisation. In this case GRIP 1 was used toillustrate the implications of strategic choices/plansin the context of flooding in Rotterdam. The

knowledge attained can then be used to modify real-world plans.

The third paper Modelling Social Learning ofAdolescense-Limited Criminal Behaviour by TiborBosse, Charlotte Gerritsen, and Michel Klein,presented by Michel Klein, investigated the benefitof simulation for analysis of emergence of criminalbehaviour. The simulations model social learning(based on Sutherland) in different scenarios, theresults of which were validated with real-life data.These simulations have been extended in “futurework” that analyses data on 1700 studentscontaining information on their behaviour over timeand their friendship relationships.

The discussions after each of the papers addressedthe purpose and value of simulations in general, butalso for each of the papers individually. Theconclusion was that simulations are used to identifyproblems, analyse the potential of specific plans,transitions, analyse possible behaviour: a usefulexperimental tool.

Data MiningHendrik Blockeel

The session on data mining contained four talks.The first paper presented was Approximation Boundfor K-Means Clustering of Binary Data, authoredby Nikolaj Tatti. Unfortunately the author could notattend the conference; the paper was presented byBoris Cule instead, who did a very good job atpresenting this work, in which he had not beeninvolved personally. As the title suggests, a boundwas given for the maximal squared error of k-meansclustering, for the special case of binary data. Aclear explanation was also given why such a boundis possible for binary data, when it is known not tobe possible for data in general.

The second talk, given by Tias Guns, was onConstraint Programming for Correlated ItemsetMining. In a very visual and intuitive presentation,the author explained how, when one is looking forfrequent itemsets that correlate with particularclasses (and hence are useful for predicting theseclasses), earlier derived bounds on when an itemsetmight still meet a minimum correlation criterion canbe improved. To this were added experimentalresults which showed how the inclusion of thesestronger bounds in a constraint-programming-baseddata-mining algorithm results in a spectacularefficiency gain.

The third speaker was again Boris Cule, who nowpresented his own work: A New Constraint for

Mining Sets in Sequences. A problem in sequencemining is that when gaps in the sequence areallowed, it can be difficult to assess how interestinga frequent subsequence is; the sequence “abc” maybe interesting if the a, b and c frequently occur closetogether, and less interesting if they occur equallyfrequently but with large gaps between them. Theauthors present a new measure that takes intoaccount both the frequency and the “cohesion” ofthe subsequence, and an algorithm for efficientlydetecting sequences that surpass a given thresholdfor this measure.

The fourth talk was on Descriptive Mining of FolkMusic: A testcase. Jonatan Taminau presented thisvery nice application of subgroup discovery, wherefolk songs from 6 different countries or regionswere analysed using the CN2-SD system. It turnsout that very simple and interpretable subgroupdescriptions can clearly expose particularities of thefolk music from these countries.

As a whole, the data mining session presented avery nice and balanced sample of the high-qualityresearch on data mining that is being conducted inthe Benelux, with contributions both on thetheoretical and the application-oriented side.

Knowledge Representation andReasoning

The session on knowledge representation andreasoning featured one A-paper and three B-papers,covering diverse topics in the area. The first speakerwas Krystyna Milian (VU), who presented work onthe identification of subdomains of medicalontologies, related to particular diseases. Twomethods for identification were compared, using acase study of identifying breast cancer concepts inthe medical ontology SNOMED. The results showthat the two methods yield partially overlappingsubdomains, that form a small part of the wholeontology.

The second speaker was Paolo Turrini (UU) whopresented a modal logic investigating the interactionbetween coalitions of agents and their environment.Specifically, the logic allows to reason aboutsituations in which the outcomes of an interactionare determined by the agents, without theenvironment being able to interfere.

Duco Ferro (TUD) gave the third presentation aboutmonitoring of business processes, with the aim ofinforming managers about business activities.Properties that the business activities should adhere

to are specified in the Temporal Trace Language(TTL). An organization-specific ontology is used tofacilitate expressing properties in TTL.

Finally, Nico Roos (MU) presented work ondiagnoses. It was shown that traditional notions ofdiagnosis are no longer suitable if the available datahas different accuracies, and a new notion ofdiagnosis was presented.

Evolutionary ComputationIda Sprinkhuizen-Kuyper

This session contained two presentations. The firstpresentation was by Peter Bosman. He presentedthe paper: On Empirical Memory Design, FasterSelection of Bayesian Factorizations andParameter-Free Gaussian EDAs. In an impressivepresentation he shortly showed three recentcontributions to EDAs. In the award session hereceived the award for the best B-paper.

The second presentation was by Martijn vanOtterloo (paper with coauthor Tim De Vuyst):Evolving and Transferring Probabilistic Policiesfor Relational Reinforcement Learning. This paperfocussed on learning relational policies in aprobabilistic logical framework. He illustrated hisalgorithm with examples in the Block World andGoldfinder domains. It was a nice presentation.

Both presentations were followed by animateddiscussions.

Machine Learning IWalter Kosters

In the first presentation Vincent van der Goesdiscussed The Effect of Life Expectancy on RiskAversion (co-authored by Guszti Eiben; both fromthe Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam). He introduced asimple artificial multi-agent world, the so-calledsugarscape system. There is only one resource:sugar. In the proposed evolutionary approach, riskattitude is coded as a gene. Simulations show thefollowing: agents that have much to lose (i.e., theireternal life) evolve a more risk-averse life style thanthose with a limited life span. Interestingapplications might include the observed differencein average life expectancy for men and women.

The second talk, entitled Probabilistic RelationalModelling of Mammographic Images, was given byNivea Ferreira (co-author: Peter Lucas; both fromthe Radboud University at Nijmegen). Inmammography, the so-called mediolateral oblique

(MLO) and craniocaudal (CC) X-ray projections arethe most common ones used for breast imaging.Information from these sources must be combined: asuspicious region in one view might have acorresponding region in the other. Object-orienteddatabase theory is employed as a basis, andrelational probabilistic methods (in particular theRelational Probability Tree (RPT)) are shown toimprove predictions. The full paper was publishedin the Proceedings of the 22nd IEEE InternationalSymposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems,2009.

The third paper was Improved Mammographic CADPerformance using Multi-View Information: ABayesian Network Framework, presented by MarinaVelikova (with co-authors Maurice Samulski, PeterLucas and Nico Karssemeijer; all from the RadboudUniversity at Nijmegen). As in the previouspresentation, the issue is the improvement of theanalysis of breast images from screening programs,again using MLO and CC projections. A Bayesiannetwork framework is proposed, that exploits multi-view dependencies. Experiments show that theincorporation of expert knowledge in a probabilisticmanner provides a significantly higher breast-cancerdetection rate compared to the single-viewcomputer-aided detection (CAD) system. Anotherbenefit is the potential for prescreening purposes.The full paper appeared in Physics in Medicine andBiology 54 (2009), 1131-1147.

The fourth and last presentation was by Perry Groot,who talked on Multi-Task Preference Learning withGaussian Processes (co-authored by AdrianaBirlutiu and Tom Heskes; all from the RadboudUniversity at Nijmegen). Suppose you want to learnpreferences. Data for a single task might be scarce;however, multiple subjects can give preference datafor similar tasks. This can be used to regularizeindividual user models by assuming that modelparameters are drawn from a common hyperprior.The usefulness of the approach is demonstrated onan audiological data set, where preference for one oftwo sounds is measured. A hierarchical non-parametric model based on Gaussian processesimproves the process. The full paper was publishedin the Proceedings of the 17th European Symposiumon Artificial Neural Networks (ESANN), pages 123-128, 2009.

The presentation of Radboud Winkels was titledReasoning with Spacial Plans on the Semantic Web.The topic can be described as normative reasoningbased on spacial plans (“ruimtelijke ordening”), that

is, what is and is not allowed in a specific area. Forthis, Semantic Web techniques have been applied incombination with Geographic Information Systems(GIS). This allows users to see what is and what isnot allowed in specific areas on a map.

The presentation of Zhisheng Huang was titledUsing Semantic Distances for Reasoning withInconsistent Ontologies. The proposed approach isfirst to apply a relevance function to select someconsistent sub-theory from an inconsistentontology, then to apply standard reasoning on theselected sub-theory. If this yields no satisfyinganswer, then the relevance degree of the selectionfunction is made less restrictive, thereby extendingthe consistent sub-theory for further reasoning. Theapproach of selecting consistent sub-theories hasthe advantage that one can use standard reasoners,which would not be possible if one would forinstance adopt a paraconsistent approach.

The presentation of Annette ten Teije was titledKnowledge Engineering Rediscovered: TowardsReasoning Patterns for the Semantic Web. The ideais to identify a small number of reasoning patternsand components that can then be re-used for varioustasks related to the Semantic Web. For this purpose,seven different task types were provided, and it wasshown how these tasks can be implemented using asmall number of primitive inference steps. Theresults of the current work can be seen as a first steptowards a methodology for building Semantic Webapplications out of reusable components.

The presentation of Alexander Hogenboom wastitled Genetic Algorithms for RDF Chain QueryOptimization. This work focusses on RDF chainqueries, which are a special class of SPARQLqueries. The proposal is to use the newly devisedgenetic algorithm RCQ-GA to determine the orderin which joins need to be performed for an efficientevaluation of RDF chain queries. It was found thatRCQ-GA tends to outperform the benchmarksolution in the literature (2PO) on solution quality,execution time needed and consistency of solutionquality.

The 2009 SKBS-Strukton Prize

The Foundation for Knowledge Based Systems(SKBS) and the Company Strukton continued theirpolicy of awarding the SKBS prize to the bestdemonstration of the Demo-session of the BNAIC2009. Unfortunately, the company Strukton wasunable to attend this BNAIC by its members Bas

Obladen (who is a regular visitor since the mid1990s) and Carlos F. Bosma MSc. The economicclimate required them to exploit their ideas in directcontact with the clients instead of exploring newideas at the BNAIC in Eindhoven. Yet, their interestin new ideas is so intensive that they confirmed tosupport the SKBS prize also in 2009 with an amountof Euro 350, bringing the full prize to Euro 700. Weare grateful for this generous gesture and wish thecompany a better climate for the months to come.We hope to see Obladen and Bosma again inLuxembourg in October 2010 at the 22nd BNAIC.

The 2009 referee committee consisted of Jaap vanden Herik (chair), Annette ten Teije (BNVKIboard), Hendrik Blockeel (Belgium, Leuven), andPeter van der Putten (Businessman and researcher).

Peter van der Putten was the invited speaker of theIndustry Track. His lecture was titled: AI in theWild: Decisioning, Predictive Analytics andSimulation for Customer Experience Optimization.He is also affiliated to LIACS at the LeidenUniversity.

The referee committee had to consider eightsubmissions which were eligible for the SKBSprize. In Table 1 we list them by topic (in the orderof their publication in the Conference ProgramBNAIC 2009).

Since 1999 we have seen many differentappearances of the Demo-session. The commoncharacteristic is the emphasis on being “anindustrial exhibition”. Up to 2006 the prize moneywas provided by SKBS only. The Foundation forKnowledge Based Systems originates from the late1980s as a foundation within SPIN (StimuleringsProjectteam In Nederland). The Foundation SNN(Stichting Neurale Netwerken) is another well-known member of the former SPIN. They supportedSKBS financially with augmenting the SKBS prizein 2007. In 2008, the industrial partner Struktonannounced its willingness to participate in the prizefunding. The extra contribution was gratefullyaccepted. As stated above they continued this policyin 2009.

Below we repeat some relevant information of lastyear as an introduction to Bas and Carlos. BasObladen is a fervent and enthusiastic visitor of theBNAIC since the mid 1990s. As a participant fromindustry he has served over the years, many times inour SKBS jury. He acknowledged recently that hehad learned substantial things from our conferencesas can be assessed from his ideas publicly voiced inpress releases in 2008. Bas is the man who launchedthe idea that all cars arriving at the Ringway ofAmsterdam should be given the opportunity to parkdirectly under the ground. Subsequently, the driversand passengers should be offered the means tocontinue their way to the centre of Amsterdam by astrongly improved public transport. The plan hadtwo winning ideas for two different reasons: (1) nocars in the city any more and (2) strongimprovement of public transport. During the 2008BNAIC Bas introduced his successor at Strukton,Carlos F. Bosma MSc and agreed to support theSKBS prize.

In 2009, six of the eight submissions were gatheredin the demonstration room of the AuditoriumBuilding TU/e where the BNAIC took place. All sixwere full-fledged demonstrations. It was really apleasure to walk along the demos and to discussthem with the stand holders. Two demonstrationswere located elsewhere. Smart Goals was in thecorridor at the other site of the Aula building. Thedemonstration titled Cobes: The clean, safe andhospitable metro was in the neighbouring buildingwhere the Industrial Design education is housed.Again, the quality, particularly the quality of ideas,has grown considerably over the last year.

A rough division into four categories of each twocontenders was as follows: the production category:(5) and (8), the pilot category: (3) and (7), theproof-of-concept category: (2) and (4), the researchcategory: (1) and (6).

Whatever, the division, the referee committee had adifficult task. The procedure went in shifts: from 8we reduced the number of candidates to six and thento four. The remaining four were (2) Tom vanBergen et al., (4) Joris Maervoet et al., (7) ErwinJ.W. Abbink, and (8) Jakub Zavrel et al.. Taking adecision was difficult.

The members of the referee committee were invitedto score on (a) the quality of the submission, (b) theoriginality, (c) the scientific element, (d) therelations within AI, (e) the applicability (in industryor education), (f) the presentation, and (g) the use ofAI tools and/or AI methods. The spirit of the SKBSprize is in the criteria (d) and (e). If only criteria (g)had been applied then (7) would have won, even sowe agreed that criteria (e) and (g) only would haveled to (8) as winner. Moreover, the criteria (a), (e)and (g) lead us to (4). Finally, all these criteria takeninto account together with criteria (b), the juryarrived at (2) for the SKBS-Strukton prize in 2009.It was the demo Cobes: The clean, safe andhospitable metro by Tom van Bergen, MaartenBrugmans, Bart Dohmen and Niels Molenaar. Ourcongratulations. The team received a cheque of Euro700,-.

In Table 2 we provide an overview of the winners ofthe SKBS-Strukton prize so far.

On June 11 and 12, the 2nd International Conferenceon Human-Robot Personal Relationships (HRPR)took place at the Leiden University, KamerlinghOnnes Building, Steenschuur 25, Leiden.Originally, it was scheduled to take place at TiCCin Tilburg, at the Tilburg University. The shift ofvenue was due to the unique opportunity tocombine the organisational forces of the CHI-NLworkshop (to be held at June 11, 2009 in theKamerlingh Onnes Building) and the HRPR.

CHI stands for Computer Human Interaction, theaim of CHI and HRPR are particially overlapping.So, both programme chairs (Jaap van den Herik,HRPR, and Frans Verbeek, CHI-NL) faced anoverlapping group of potential attendees andspeakers. Conscientious deliberation led to a mergeof the organisation and the key-note speakers. Here,emphasis was on the key-note speech by professor

Hiroshi Ishiguro, a senior researcher of the ATRIntelligent Robotics and CommunicationLaboratories in Japan. Below we start with a blow-by-blow account of the lectures of the HRPR andcomplete the report by a summary of Ishiguro’sideas.

Title: Child-robot interaction: Investigatingemotional expressions and social interaction ofchildren in a collaborative gamePresenter: Suleman ShahidOverview: The outcomes of an experiment werepresented in which children of 8 and 12 years oldplay a simple guessing game either with a friend, astranger, alone, or with the robot iCat. The mainmeasurement of interest was the level of emotionalexpression during the game. Although emotionalexpressions were strongest when playing with afriend, they were also observed when playing withthe iCat. Moreover, emotional expressions directedtowards the iCat were observed, and children weregenerally more positive about iCat after theexperiment, especially the 8-year-olds.

Title: Face recognition and user identificationPresenter: Wilco MoermanOverview: A method of face detection waspresented, which should be able to matchphotographs of faces in different angles and lightingconditions and identify which pictures are from thesame person. This is done by mapping detectedfacial features on a sparse 3D model of a head,which can then be rotated so that faces pictured indifferent angles can be easily compared.

Title: Humans, animals, and robots: Aphenomenological approach to human-robotrelationsPresenter: Mark CoeckelberghOverview: Coeckelbergh argued that aphenomenological approach and comparisons withhuman-animal relationships can aid ourunderstanding of human-robot relations. Heexplored some potential gains of this approach bydiscussing the concept of alterity, the importance ofdiversity and appearance, Heidegger’s claim thatanimals are ‘poor in world’, and the issue of robot-animal relations.

Title: Humanoid robots and the problem of thesocial border: Toward a deanthropologized conceptof personhoodPresenter: Hironori MatsuzakiOverview: In modern democratic societies, thecircle of social persons is delimited on the basis of adistinction between living human beings and otherentities. features are integrated into the life-world on a largescale. Matsuzaki developed a theoretical frameworkfor rational understanding of such border problemsposed by the novel kinds of human-machinerelationship. Within this approach, the conceptionof personhood is radically deanthropologized, i.e., itmust be considered an open question whether onlyliving humans can be social persons. Thereby acrucial methodological problem occurs because itmust first be clarified what constitutes (1) socialphenomena and (2) personhoods. He assumed thisproblem can be overcome by elaborating a formalmodel of the social. This basic assumption will steerthe critical field observation on human-robotinteraction. The key idea consists in the focus onthe high complexity emerging within the practicallyconducted interaction between at least the threeentities, viz. human beings, interactive robots, andother entities.

Title: Looking forward to a "robotic society"? –Imaginations of future human-robot relationshipsPresenter: Judith IgelsbroeckOverview: The outcomes of an experiment werepresented in which laymen and experts were askedabout their view of future human-robot relations.Although experts appeared to see more potential forrobots, their worries were not too dissimilar fromthose of laymen. The audience thought including,e.g., Japanese in the participants might givedifferent interesting results. Also, the audiencewondered whether the results would differ if theparticipants were also asked to includetechnological enhancements to humans in theirvision of future robotic societies.

Title: Intimate physical interaction with robots,human - robot KissPresenter: Hooman Aghaebrahimi SamaniOverview: A prototype robot was presented whichwould facilitate remote kissing. Egg-shaped and thesize of a human head, it has two lips with severalsensors in them, which can register a person’s kiss.This particular kiss can then be sent to another suchrobot (possibly by interfacing with a mobile phone),where another person can hold his own robot to hisskin and receive the kiss. This way, two persons canshare a kiss even when far apart. David Levyargued this was the best project shown at this HRPRconference.

Title: Do puppeteers design better robot gestures?Presenter: Jamy LiOverview: The outcomes of an experiment werepresented in which laymen and professionalpuppeteers were asked to create emotional gestureson a robot named robotPHONE. This is a teddybear with 2 DOF in its head and 2 DOF in each arm.The participants were asked to create gestures that

would convey the emotions happiness, sadness,anger, fear, surprise, and disgust. It was found thatnot all gestures designed by the puppeteers wererecognized better than those designed by the noviceparticipants. The audience suggested that this maybe due to the few DOF of the robot used, putting thepuppeteers in a disadvantadge because they are usedto handling more expressive puppets. The audiencealso suggested that the 6 basic emotions used maynot have been an optimal choice, because the reasonthese are considered basic emotions (by Ekman) isthe universality of their corresponding facialexpressions, while the robot used in the experimentis not capable of making facial expressions.

Title: Using positive and negative social feedback topromote energy conservation behavior in the homePresenter: Jaap HamOverview: The outcomes of an experiment werepresented in which the iCat robot gave feedback onthe energy consumption when selecting a(simulated) washing task. It was found that givingnegative feedback was most effective in persuadingparticipants to reduce energy consumption,independent of the source of the feedback (i.e., iCator any other source).

Title: Persuasive agents and the occurrence ofreactance as a result of restricting communicationPresenter: Maaike RoubroeksOverview: The outcomes of an experiment werepresented in which participants were persuaded toreduce energy consumption when selecting a(simulated) washing task. Participants werepresented with either a non-threatening, low-threatening, or high-threatening message toconserve energy, conveyed by either text, a stillrobot, or an animated robot (iCat). The mainvariable measured was the level of intention torestore threatened freedom (i.e., psychologicalreactance). It was found that reactance was higherwith higher threats and with higher social agency ofthe conveyor, but no support for interaction betweenthe two was reported.

Title: Robot vacuum cleaner personality andbehaviourPresenter: Bram HendriksOverview: The outcomes of an experiment werepresented in which participants were asked todescribe the desired personality of a robot vacuumcleaner. The mentioned traits were then mapped tothe Big Five model and used to implement thebehavior of a prototype robot vacuum cleaner. Theparticipants were then shown a video of a robotvacuum cleaner with the desired behavior, andindeed, the participants recognized the intendedbehavior.

Hiroshi IshiguroProfessor Hiroshi Ishiguro had a perfect and verysophisticated lecture. He started from scratch with asimple idea in building robots that could performeasy tasks. The task became more and moredifficult and that invited the researchers to developa methodology for their research. For adequatedeveloping such a methodology it was necessary toformulate goals. Hiroshi did so step by step and wasable to grasp the attention of the audience for a fullhour. The final goal was to create a robot twin. Twoexamples were: a twin robot for his daughter and atwin robot for himself (see the picture).

The main problems did not come from technology,but from social sciences: what are the behaviouralrules when handling a twin robot? Hiroshi is anexcellent representative for the work performed athis laboratory, he knows all the technical details andis able to convince people in this respect.

The audience was taken, but not all of them sinceDavid Levy was among them. He wrote the bookIntimate relationship between artificial partners,which was later published in the US under the titleLove and Sex with Computers. So, one can imaginethat there arose a lively discussion between Davidand Hiroshi.

With the performance of modern computersimproving at a rapid pace, database technology hasproblems with fully exploiting the benefits that eachnew hardware generation brings. This has caused asignificant performance gap between general-purpose databases and specialized, application-optimized solutions for large-volume computation-intensive processing problems, as found in areasincluding information retrieval, scientific datamanagement and decision support.

This thesis attempts to enhance the state-of-the-artin architecture-conscious database research, both inthe query execution layer as well as in the datastorage layer, and in the way these work together.Thus, rather than focusing on an isolated problem oralgorithm, the thesis presents a new database systemarchitecture, realized in the MonetDB/X100prototype, that combines a coherent set of newarchitecture-conscious techniques that are designedto work well together.

The motivation for the new query execution layercomes from the analysis of the problems of twopopular approaches to query processing: tuple-at-a-time operator pipelining, used in most existingsystems, and column-at-a-time materializingoperators, found in MonetDB. MonetDB/X100proposes a new vectorize- in-cache execution modelthat exploits ideas from both approaches andcombines the scalability of the former with the high-performance bulk processing of the latter. This isachieved by modifying the traditional operator-pipeline model to operate on cache-resident vectorsof data using highly optimized primitive functions.Additionally, within this architecture, a set ofhardware-conscious design and programmingtechniques is presented, enabling efficient executionof typical data-processing tasks. The resultingquery-execution layer efficiently exploits modern

super-scalar CPUs and cache-memory systems andachieves in-memory performance often one or twoorders of magnitude higher than the existingapproaches.

In the storage area there are two hardware trendsthat significantly influence database performance.First, the imbalance between sequential diskbandwidth and random disk latency continuouslyincreases. As a result, access methods that rely onrandom I/O become less attractive, making variousforms of sequential access the preferred option.MonetDB/X100 follows this idea with ColumnBM– a bandwidth-optimized column store. Secondly,both disk bandwidth and latency improvesignificantly more slowly than the computing powerof modern CPUs, especially with the advent ofmulti-core CPUs. ColumnBM introduces twotechniques that address this issue. Lightweight in-cache compression allows trading some processortime for an increased perceived disk bandwidth.High decompression performance is achieved byapplying the decompression on the RAM-cacheboundary, providing cache-resident data directly tothe execution layer. Additionally, the introducedfamily of compression methods providesperformance an order of magnitude higher thanprevious solutions. Cooperative scans observecurrent system activity and dynamically scheduleI/O operations to exploit overlapping demands ofdifferent queries. This amortizes the cost of diskaccess among multiple consumers, and also betterutilizes the available buffer space, providing muchbetter performance with many concurrentlyexecuting queries.

By combining CPU-efficient processing with abandwidth-optimized storage facility, MonetDB/X100 has been able to achieve its high in-memoryraw query-execution power also on huge disk-resident datasets. We evaluated its performanceboth on TPC-H decision-support data sets as well asin the area of large-volume information retrieval(the Terabyte TREC task), where it successfullycompeted with the specialized solutions, both forin-memory and disk-based tasks.

Sensor Data Management withProbabilistic Models

The increasing availability of cheap, small, low-power sensor hardware and the ubiquity of wiredand wireless networks have led to the prediction that‘sensing environments’ will emerge in the nearfuture. The sensors in these environments collectdetailed information about the situation people arein, which is used to enhance information-processingapplications that are present on their mobile and‘ambient’ devices.

Mediating between the sensor-data supply anddemand sides poses new requirements to datamanagement. In this thesis, we identify andinvestigate the challenge of dealing with theuncertainty inherent in sensor-data processing. Thisuncertainty arises due to many causes: measurementnoise, missing data because of sensor or networkfailure, the inherent ‘semantic gap’ between the datathat is measured and the information one isinterested in, and the integration of data fromdifferent sensors. Probabilistic models deal withthese uncertainties in the well-understood,comprehensive and modular framework ofprobability theory, and are therefore often used inprocessing sensor data.

In particular, Bayesian networks form a goodcandidate for modeling sensor data in a flexibleenvironment, because of their comprehensivenessand modularity. We provide extensive technicalargumentation for this claim. As a demonstrationcase, we define a discrete Bayesian network forlocation tracking using Bluetooth transceivers.

In order to scale up sensor models, efficientprobabilistic inference is crucial. We observe thatthe conventional inference methods for Bayesiannetworks, which have mainly been developed in themedical and hardware-diagnosis domain, do notscale well for our demonstration case. We propose

several optimizations, making it possible to jointlyscale up the number of locations and sensors insublinear time, and to scale up the time resolution inlinear time.

More important than these optimizations themselvesis the way by which we arrive at them; we define astraightforward theoretical framework fortranslating an inference query into relationalalgebra. This allows the query to be analyzed andoptimized using insights and techniques from thedatabase community; for example, using costmetrics based on cardinality rather thandimensionality, which is common in conventionalinference algorithms.

A fairly orthogonal research question investigatesthe possibility of collecting the transition statistics(needed for acquiring the parameters of aprobabilistic model) in a local, clustered fashion, inwhich transitions between states of differentclusters cannot be directly observed. We show thatthis problem can be written as a constrained systemof linear equations, for which we describe aspecialized solution method.

As the infrastructure to provide a service, mobileapplications must be simple, quiet, invisible andunobtrusive. However, examples of applications

that do not consider the current situation whiledelivering information are present everywhere. Out-of-context information is perceived by the user asinappropriate and inconvenient. The objective ofthis research is to define a computing model thatsupports the development of better, more intelligentmobile services. The solution must considerenvironment information, provide a flexibledeliberation cycle, and explore the trade-off betweenquality of information and resource efficiency. Withthat in mind, this research seeks to answer a keyquestion: what is the architecture of the inferencesystem needed to support the development ofintelligent mobile services? Revolving around thatquestion, it investigates: (1) How to balanceproactivess and reactiveness in mobile services? (2)How contextual information can be used to supportthe decision process? That is, how information fromthe environment can help to decide when stop beingproactive and act reactively, and vice versa? And (3)How to extend the deliberation model to inherentlysupport these elements?

The work focuses on agent-based softwarearchitecture and methods to support the implement-tation of intelligent mobile services. The proposedmodel is an extension of the BDI-model of softwareagents equipped to operate in highly dynamicenvironments. Tests show that applications builtupon this model provide similar effectiveness as thepurely reactive systems (e.g., cautious agents, whichis a configuration used by several agentimplementations) with significant gains incomputational performance. The improvement isemphasised when the application is running onhighly dynamic environments: e.g., one test shows30% better performance if the environment’s degreeof dynamism is around 10%, 50% improvement ifthe degree parameter is around 50%, and up to 65%improvement if the degree parameter is set to 90%.From these results, the research concludes that theproposed model is a better option to implementmobile services than other solutions in the field. Theoptimisation in deliberation performance means thatless CPU-cycles are required to run the application,which reflects in the application’s overallperformance and reduction of battery utilisation.

The research contributes to the theory and the fieldin the following ways: (1) it introduces an extendedBDI-model of agent computing that providesinherent solutions to operate in highly dynamicenvironments; (2) it provides a new approach toallow agent-based applications to exploit features ofthe environment to infer when to revise currentprocessing lines; (3) it proposes that different agentplatforms could be adapted to support the proposeddesign to reduce CPU cycles and increase overallapplication performance, and (4) it suggests that the

technology can be applied to implementapplications in different knowledge domains wheresoftware applications must operate in a dynamicenvironment, use context information for decisionmaking, and implement both reactive and proactivebehaviour.

Finally, the solution can be applied to differentknowledge domains that involve high-dynamicenvironments, as for example: intelligent personalassistant: solution to support dynamic environmentand resource constraints, aiming to deliver qualityinformation for end-user; robotics: solution tosupport dynamic environment and resourceconstraints, aiming on better autonomousbehaviour, and; ambient intelligence: solution tosupport dynamic environment and to deliver qualityinformation to end-user.

Software knowledge unnecessarily lostAll too often the knowledge acquired by softwarearchitects is unnecessarily lost. Moreover, it isdifficult to simply and quickly assess the quality ofsoftware. According to Dutch researchers Remco de

Boer and Rik Farenhorst these problems can,however, be easily resolved. They investigated howarchitectural knowledge can be better disseminatedand retrieved.

The design and construction of large softwaresystems demands a lot of creativity and knowledgeon the part of software architects. During projectssuch as the OV-chipkaart (digital public transportpass) or digital tax return form, due considerationneeds to be given to security requirements, ease ofuse and performance. The architect incorporatesthese requirements and the wishes of his clients inthe design and must at the same time allow for thetechnical limitations and possibilities. Architectswho do not have or cannot access the rightknowledge in time, keep on ‘reinventing the wheel’.

Rik Farenhorst investigated how software architectscan share their knowledge more easily. Hediscovered that many architects simply talk too littlewith each other. They want to receive knowledge,but are less willing to pass it on. He calls for acombination of two forms of knowledge sharing:using fixed templates in which architecturalknowledge can be recorded and through opencommunication. Such open communication could befacilitated by forums or ‘yellow pages’ that allowthe architects to find each other.

Assessing softwareRemco de Boer examined the role of auditors. Theseauditors assess the quality of software systems. Thismeans that they must often wade through piles ofpaperwork looking for the information they need,for example about the decisions that an architect hasmade during the design process. De Boer developeda method for guiding auditors through thisinformation to ensure that less time and money islost in endless searches.

Farenhorst and De Boer carried out their research incollaboration with several IT companies. Theseorganisations indicated that the design andevaluation processes for their software oftenproceed with difficulty. Farenhorst and De Boerhave now demonstrated how these difficulties canlargely be resolved.

Farenhorst’s and De Boer’s research was part of theNWO programme Joint Academic and CommercialQuality Research & Development (JACQUARD).They carried out their work within the GRIFFINproject, which is describing how and why softwareengineers take decisions about the architecture oftheir software. GRIFFIN is a consortium ofacademic and industrial partners.

Web usage mining (WUM) aims to analyse andmodel the browsing behaviour of Web users todiscover relevant patterns and knowledge aboutWeb usage. This knowledge can then be exploitedto steer Web marketing strategies, to improve Website usability and in general to provide better serviceto online customers.

In recent years, with the widespread diffusion ofbroadband internet and with the vastly growingnumber of online services, the number of onlinecustomers and the amount of browsing (a.k.a.clickstream) data generated by them greatlyincreased. Processing and modelling huge volumeclickstream data in practice poses difficulties fortraditional WUM techniques. Efficient online Webusage mining algorithms, that process and modelthe data stream incrementally, on-the-fly, areneeded to take up the challenge.

In this book our main goal is to model thebehaviour and changes of the behaviour of Webusers over time considering the aforementionedharsh constraints. Both the design and maintenanceof compact and efficient individual user profiles andmonitoring their changes over time are largelyunexplored areas in (online) Web usage mining andthis forms the main challenge in our work.

Model-Driven Semantic Integration ofService-Oriented Applications

In this thesis, we propose a method for the semanticintegration of service-oriented applications. Thedistinctive feature of the method is thatsemantically-enriched service models are employedat different levels of abstraction (from businessrequirements to software implementation) to deliverflexible integration solutions.

In Chapter 2, we start with analyzing the most citedinteroperability definitions and derive commoncharacteristics of interoperability. Next, we usethese common characteristics to define whatinteroperability means and identify three differentlevels of interoperability, namely, syntactic,semantic and pragmatic interoperability. Finally, westudy literature from different areas and identifypossible interoperability problems at each of theinteroperability levels.

In Chapter 3, we present a short history of theenterprise-application-integration (EAI) approaches,discuss their shortcomings and argue what isrequired to address these shortcomings. We identifythree main aspects of the EAI problem. The firstaspect concerns the difference in the informationmodels of the systems that have to be integrated.The second aspect concerns the differences in theinteraction protocols of the systems. Finally, thethird aspect concerns the complexity of buildingEAI solutions.

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), KnowledgeRepresentation (KR) and Model-DrivenArchitectures (MDA) have been proposed assolutions to each of the indentified problems. InChapter 3, we argue that, since the problem aspectsof current EAI approaches always occur together,SOA, KR and MDA should be combined to dealwith the problem as a whole.

In Chapter 4, we define a conceptual framework forservice modeling. The purpose of the framework isto serve as a common semantic meta-model thatenables the description, integration and reasoningabout (integrated) service-oriented applications.Using the framework one can model the domain ofa system, the interactions among its componentsand their relations, and reason whether thesecomponents are interoperable. We expect that ourframework will have a wide spectrum ofapplication, e.g., can be used to model services at abusiness, application and component level, thusbeyond the usual domain of web services.

In Chapter 5, we present a method for the semanticintegration of service-oriented applications. Westart by identifying necessary conditions forsemantic and pragmatic interoperability of service-oriented applications. Next, we propose anintegration method that enables business-domainexperts to explicitly specify an integration solutionat a higher level of abstraction. The abstractsolution is then (semi-)automatically transformed toa software solution by adding technical details bythe IT experts. Finally, we present a method toverify formally whether the proposed integrationsolution meets the identified conditions forinteroperability.

In Chapters 6 to 9, we validate our integrationmethod by applying it in a particular context, usingparticular technologies. In Chapter 1, we identifieda number of requirements for integration methods ingeneral. To verify whether our method meets theserequirements we make a number of claims andprovide arguments for their validity. We do this byapplying our method in a concrete context usingconcrete technologies. For that purpose, we solvetwo integration problems from order-managementdomain and travel domain, respectively. Whenapplying our integration method we observe anumber of effects. We analyse our observations andargue to what extent our integration method meetsthe requirements defined in Chapter 1.

Finally, in Chapter 10, we summarise theconclusions of this thesis and identify some topicsfor further research.

Multimodal Recognition of Emotions

Multimodal recognition of emotions has been latelyextensively studied by several research groupsworldwide. The race for making computer programsto be able to read emotions has been motivated bythe potentially wide range of applications whichinvolve human-machine interfaces. The emotion-recognition mechanisms which now represent trueengineering milestones for research area, willdefinitely represent standards to empower usefuldevices in every-day life of people in the nearfuture. This thesis proposes different approaches forautomatic recognition of emotions by consideringvision and speech data. The major characteristic ofthe recognition is the robustness to various workingcontexts like face orientation, illumination, subject’sgender, age and skin colour.

The modalities have been investigated separatelyand together in order to identify which models leadto better recognition results. The recognition processimplies the classification of six categories,according to the prototypic emotions as defined byEkman.

The facial-expression classification models havebeen adapted and tested on samples from theunimodal Cohn-Kanade database and on thebimodal Enterface05 database.

By using the action-unit annotations and by studyingthe data-set outliers, we obtained well-balanced

databases of facial expressions. In addition tobuilding models for facial-expression analysis, wehave focused also on the detection of action units.The work is significant because it allows for moreflexibility in decoding facial expressions.

Eventually, the facial expressions are identifiedusing static and dynamic models. In contrast tostatic models which attempt the classification fromseparate images, dynamic models use extra cluesregarding dynamic shape and texture changes fromvideo data. In either case, we have used parameterfacial representations from adapted local binarypatterns, Viola&Jones features, geometric andoptical flow features. For dynamic analysis of data,we separated the influence of speech on the faceappearance. In the research, we proposed a versionof the Adaboost.M2 multi-class classifier and usedthis implementation in the context of analysinglarge sets of visual features for facial expressionrecognition. The extraction of specific indicators ofemotion from speech audio data has been realizedusing prosodic features and classification modelslike GentleBoost and hidden Markov models.

In order to process real-life data, we have doneresearch on various multimodal data-fusiontechniques. The fusion is firstly assumed to increasethe confidence of the recognition results comparedto the results of unimodal processing of emotions.Subsequently, applying fusion on face and voicedata aims at decreasing the ambiguity of theclassification when there is no emotion consistencyamong modalities. We used the emotion-recognition models which were presented in thisthesis for the implementation of an on-line softwareprototype. The system has been described andshowed in several conference papers and during thedemo sessions of international conferences.

The set of audio and video emotion recognizers areeventually integrated using a common multimodalframework. We have developed a workingprototype which allows for loosely coupledasynchronous communication between multipleprocessing components. Based on the multimodalframework, we further developed an application fordetecting aggression in train compartments.

In many public places multiple sensing devices,such as cameras, are installed to help preventunwanted situations such as aggression andviolence. At the moment, the best solution to reach asafe environment requires human operators tomonitor the camera images and take appropriateactions when necessary. In the wake of the terroristattacks of September 11, 2001, there has been arapid growth in the volume of security cameras andother sensing devices for anti-terrorism and othersecurity purposes. The increased application ofthese, often multi-modal, sensors has caused adigital data explosion that human operators havedifficulty to keep up with. The need for a fully orpartially automated system becomes all the moreprevailing.

The main aim of this thesis is to report on our workto address the complex challenges that arise withinthe context of multi-modal automatic surveillanceapplications. In this thesis work, a multi-modalaggression-detection system was built that fusesaudio and video data from sensors located in a traincompartment. Compared to previous work, we adopta more human centered approach to the detectionproblem by extracting knowledge and rules fromsecurity experts. The aggression-detection system isbased on many hours of observing and studyingprofessional operators at work as they analyze andrespond on surveillance data.

Our aggression-detection approach is essentiallydivided into two models: (1) the observation modelwhich describes how low-level features fromobservations are combined into high-level conceptsand (2) the reasoning model in which high-levelconcepts are reasoned with in order to infer thepresence of aggression.

In the observation model, feature-extractionalgorithms are used to transform audio and videosignals into features, which are combined byclassification algorithms into high-level concepts.In the thesis, an analysis is made of the traincompartment in particular, on the objects andsituations that may be encountered in the traincompartment. This analysis is formalized in a train-aggression ontology. In addition an overview ofrelevant audio and video feature-extraction andclassification algorithms is given. Also the JDLmodel is introduced as a way to structure the widerange of available algorithms.

In the reasoning model knowledge of the humanexpert and high-level reasoning is used to infer thepresence of aggression. In essence this boils downto combining the results of the observation model toa description of the current scenario, and comparingthis to known scenarios. If the current scenario issimilar to a known unwanted scenario or if thecurrent scenario deviates too much from a knownnormal scenario, an alarm situation may beannounced. There are a number of differentapproaches to accomplish the inference. In thisthesis, three different inference methods areexplored for their merits in aggression detection:expert-system-based reasoning, Bayesian reasoningand self-organization/emergent reasoning.

To test and verify the results, several experimentswere conducted in a real train. During theexperiments, actors had to perform scenarios asdescribed in storyboards. The storyboards wherepreviously validated by security experts for theirrealism. As the actors performed the scenarios datawas captured using multiple cameras andmicrophones. The acquired data was annotatedusing the vocabulary from the train-aggressionontology and used as ground truths for theevaluation of the aggression-detection system.

The diversityof applications also has consequences for the lists of

announcements. Moreover the announcementsthemselves are diversified. We start with the latter.

INTRODUCTIONOn November 16, 2009, the School for Informationand Knowledge Systems (SIKS) organizes itsannual SIKS day. The location will be Grand HotelKarel V in Utrecht.

There is a fixed numberof places available for SIKS. The workshops /tutorials are part of the Advanced Componentsstage of the school’s educational program.Therefore, Ph.D. students working in the field ofEnterprise Information Systems and Multi-AgentSystems are strongly encouraged to participate.

SIKS Basic Course“Research Methods and Methodology

for IKS”

INTRODUCTIONOn November 25-27, 2009, the School forInformation and Knowledge Systems (SIKS)organizes the annual three-day course “ResearchMethods and Methodology for IKS”. The locationwill be Conference center Woudschoten in Zeist.The course will be given in English and is part ofthe educational Program for SIKS-Ph.D. students.Although the course is primarily intended for SIKS-Ph.D. students, other participants are not excluded.However, their number of passes will be restrictedand depends on the number of SIKS-Ph.D. studentstaking the course.

“Research Methods and Methodology for IKS” isrelevant for all SIKS-Ph.D. students (whetherworking in computer science or in informationscience). The primary goal of this hands-on courseis to enable these Ph.D. students to make a goodresearch design for their own research project. Tothis end, it provides an interactive training invarious elements of research design, such as theconceptual design and the research planning. Butthe course also contains a general introduction tothe philosophy of science (and particularly to thephilosophy of mathematics, computer science andAI). And, it addresses such divergent topics as “thecase-study method”, “elementary research

methodology for the empirical sciences” and“empirical methods for computer science”.

“Research Methods and Methodology for IKS” is anintense and interactive course. First, all studentsenrolling for this course are asked to read somepre-course reading material, comprising somepapers that address key problems in IKS-methodology. These papers will be sent to theparticipants immediately after registration.Secondly, all participants are expected to give abrief characterization of their own researchproject/proposal, by answering a set of questions,formulated by the course directors, and based on theaforementioned literature. We believe that thisapproach results in a more efficient and effectivecourse; it will help you to prepare yourself for thecourse and this will increase the value that you willget from it.

OVERVIEWTeamwork has become the most widely acceptedmetaphor for describing the nature of multi-robotand multi-agent cooperation. The key conceptusually involves some notion of communication,shared knowledge, goals, and activities that functionas the glue that binds team members together. Byvirtue of a largely reusable explicit formal model ofshared intentions, team members attempt to managegeneral responsibilities and commitments to eachother in a coherent fashion that both enhancesperformance and facilitates recovery whenunanticipated problems arise. For example, acommon occurrence in joint action is when oneteam member fails and can no longer perform in itsrole. A general teamwork model might entail thateach team member be notified under appropriateconditions of the failure, thus reducing therequirement for special-purpose exception-handlingmechanisms for each possible failure mode.

Whereas early research on teamwork focusedmainly on interaction within groups of autonomousagents or robots, there is a growing interest in betteraccounting for the human dimension. Unlikeautonomous systems designed primarily to takehumans out of the loop, the future lies in supportingpeople, agents, and robots working together in teamsin close and continuous human-robot interaction.

What kinds of foundational software systems areneeded in support of human-robot teams? The multi-agent-systems community has been focusing on howdistributed software agents can jointly performtasks. For software agents and robots to participatein teamwork alongside people in carrying out

Just asimportant, developers of such systems need toolsand methodologies to assure that such systems willwork together reliably and safely, even when theyare designed independently and operated withreduced human oversight.

Dutch Belgian Database Day 2009(DBDBD 2009)

The Dutch Belgian Database Day (DBDBD) is ayearly one-day workshop organized in a Belgian orDutch university, whose general topic is databaseresearch. DBDBD invites submissions (1 pageabstract) on a broad range of database and database-related topics, including but not limited to datastorage and management, theoretical databaseissues, database performance, data mining,information retrieval, data semantics, querying,ontologies etc. Based on the submissions, the

workshop will be organized in different sessionseach covering a particular topic.

Participation is free for all SIKS-members (Ph.D.students, research fellows, senior research fellowsand associated members).

At the DBDBD, junior researchers from theNetherlands and Belgium can present their recentresults. It is an excellent opportunity to meet up withyour Belgian/Dutch colleagues, and to get informedabout the (recent) database-related researchperformed in Belgian/Dutch universities. Theworkshop is also open to non-Belgian/Dutchparticipants (presentations are in English).

The DBDBD 2009 is organized under auspices ofSIKS, the Dutch research school for information andknowledge systems. This year, DBDBD will be heldin the Aula Congrescentre of the TUDelft, locatedon the university campus, on Monday November 30,2009.

The importance of modeling the essence ofenterprises on a level that abstracts from businessprocess details is increasingly recognized. Tworecognized approaches are value modeling andREA. The REA (Resources, Events and Agents)model originating from the accounting domain ismaturing to a conceptual framework and ontologyfor Enterprise Architectures in general. Valuemodeling is a business-modeling approach thatfocuses on the value objects exchanged in businessnetworks and that is supported by the e3-value toolset.

The goals of this VMBO workshop are to bringtogether researchers with an interest in valuemodeling, REA systems, or related approaches, inorder to present and discuss the current state ofbusiness modeling and to identify key areas forfurther research. This year, a major part of theprogram will be devoted exclusively on discussingthe ontological foundations of service science fromboth a business and a software-engineeringperspective.

If you are interested in joining, please submit ashort paper (maximum of four pages) describingyour main ideas. We encourage you to focus on theideas in progress for which you would like to getfeedback from other workshop participants.

Note that submitted papers will be reviewed onlymarginally. The program committee will use thepapers to put together a final program; the aim is toaccommodate all relevant papers. The BNVKI-AIABN Newsletter is a direct benefit ofmembership of the BNVKI-AIABN: Benelux Association forArtificial Intelligence. Membership dues are€ 40 for regular members; € 25 for doctoral students (AIO’s);and € 20 for students. In addition, members will receive access tothe electronic version of the European journal AICommunications. The Newsletter appears bimonthly andcontains information about conferences, research projects, jobopportunities, funding opportunities, etc., provided enoughinformation is supplied. Therefore, all members are encouragedto send news and items they consider worthwhile to the editorialoffice of the BNVKI/AIABN Newsletter.
