PLAYGROUP NEWSWe stir the porridge, We stir the porridge, We stir it in the pot…..

The last two weeks have recently been hot porridge mornings with temps down to minus five degrees in Maldon and Castlemaine! In our morning circle we have been dancing around the Mulberry bush practicing to put on our hats, coats, gloves and socks before we go outside. The importance of warmth for young children can never be overstated.

In craft we are knitting woollen slippers as a class set for our playgroup room. Cosy warm feet make happy, healthy children. We have been weaving on our looms and enjoying all the many varieties of citrus fruit available on our fruit plates. Blood oranges, tangelos, ruby grapefruit and honey murcott mandarins. We are blessed to be able to enjoy such delightful tastes and variety.

Thank you to Kate Dew for looking after playgroup parents and children in my recent professional development days and illnesses. Thank you also to Loiuseann and her beautiful chooks for all the delicious eggs.

Love, Tania Chaffey

KINDERGARTEN NEWSIn my garden all is still, The flowers are asleep. But see in deep mid-winter, The crystal flowers peep.

What a busy time we are having, catching up on all of the birthdays that have been happening at this time of the year.

We are welcoming Poppy and Matilda, two lovely girls who have been getting to know us since the holidays.

Parents please look out for the Helle Heckmann evening on August 28th. Helle will speak about Creating a Day for the younger child. We are very pleased to be able to welcome this inspirational Early Childhood speaker to Castlemaine this month.

Warm wishes, Helen

PREP NEWSLook out, look out, Jack Frost is about!

It has been cold! The children have enjoyed finding ice in the mornings and leaving out dishes of water to see if they freeze overnight. Sanding wooden swords and boats in front of the fire has been a popular activity this week.

Our Prep Class Meeting this term will be next Thursday 14th August, 7.30pm – 9.30pm. I look forward to seeing you there. Keep warm.

Love, Heather

CLASS TWO NEWSCold and chilly mornings have led us to some beautiful, sparkling walks as we enter the third week of term. We have all been busy working on different aspects from The King of Ireland’s Son and enjoying constructing, painting and drawing our explanations and understandings.

Our Class Meeting for this term will be next Wednesday 13th August at 7.30pm.

I look forward to seeing you then.

Cheers, Anna

CLASS THREE NEWSClass 3 are continuing their Old Testament stories while practicing lots of maths, running laps across the creek, learning the story of Satchkin Patchkin and also designing play frame ideas! We are very excited to be involved in the redevelopment of the junior playground area as our Class 3 building project. More information on this to follow soon!

Our Class Meeting will be on Wednesday 3rd of September at 7.30pm. We look forward to seeing parents then.

Love, Diana & Danilo

CLASS FOUR NEWSWhile we are continuing with our “Human and Animal” Main Lesson, Class 4 have been lucky to have a number of extra Spanish lessons with our visiting student teacher Kim, who also speaks and teaches French and Indonesian. This is a great boost to our Spanish studies on top of regular lessons with Jose, and the children’s pronunciation and comprehension is coming on in leaps and bounds.

In our Main Lesson, we are looking at the form and characteristics of a range of animals, from the familiar such as mice, cows and horses, to the more unusual such as cuttlefish and elephants, and comparing their specializations and adaptions with ourselves, the human being. We will be looking at the peculiar qualities of Australian mammals, and taking a trip to Werribee to make an artistic study of African animals.

Later in the term we will be studying local history, and as part of this, hiking up and camping out on Mt Alexander. 3 – 5th of September (Wed-Fri). On another occasion, we’ll also be visiting the local museum and walking Campbell’s Creek.

Best Regards, Jacob

FRENCH NEWSBonjour tout le monde!

It has been a very busy couple of weeks for French students catching up on their cultural news: firstly there was the three week spectacle of Le Tour de France. Class Seven looked at some interesting facts around ‘le grand boucle’ - for example, did you know that the longest breakaway in tour history was 292 kilometres, and the smallest finishing group was only 10, after the other 59 riders in the 1919 race dropped out along the way!

Both Class Seven and Eight also revisited their knowledge of Le quatorze juillet, the French national holiday on July 14 which marked the beginning of the French Revolution and which we know as Bastille Day. There is a special reason why the Bastille Prison could never be rebuilt. Ask your French student to see if they remember the answer!

And finally we were reminded on Monday, the one hundredth anniversary of the Great War, of the very special relationship between Australia and France forged during the years of that war. In particular, we learned that the school children of Victoria raised the money to rebuild the little school of Villers-Bretonneux after Australian soldiers defended the town in battle. In return, the Victoria School, as it is known, wears a very special motto above its door: N’oublions Jamais l’Australie. Never Forget Australia. What a wonderful reminder of the bonds of friendship that can cross the world.

Au revoir, Lynn

have noticed how this has made our presentation more animated. We are giving each other constructive critique – so we all have something on which to work, towards our Year 8 Major Project next year! The presentations have been very good and the three course meals which were planned, prepared and served with all the appropriate setting, and cleaned up have been delightful, loved by the guests and enjoyed by the students – well done Class 7!!

Warm Wishes, Lyn

CLASS EIGHT NEWSA scene from the play Class 8 are busy rehearsing:

Olivia: Stay: I prithee tell me what thou thinkft of me?

Viola: That you doe thinke you are not what you are.

Olivia: If I thinke fo, I thinke the fame of you.

Viola: Then thinke you are right: I am not what I am.

CLASS FIVE NEWSWe are conducting our Egyptian Main Lesson and this week we have been focusing on the story of Isis and Osiris. We have completed some wonderful writing and artwork during this Main Lesson.

Our camp will take place during Term IV, from the 11th to 14th November, up at Balranald on the Murray. We are all looking forward to this. At our next class meeting we will do some serious organising! Tentative date for this meeting is September 10th at 7.30pm.

The ‘Girls Day’ with Jane Bennett was wonderful! Thank you mothers for supporting your lovely girls.

Love, Anne

CLASS SIX NEWSIt was wonderful to see many of you at our Class Meeting on Tuesday night and have an opportunity to share some information about our Main Lessons this Term and hear stories of your children at home.

As I foreshadowed at the meeting, this will be a wonderfully full Term and I am planning excursions to both Bendigo and Melbourne, as well as our Great Ocean Walk Camp in the last week of Term (15th – 18th September). All parents are welcome to join us on Camp, so please consider whether you would like to challenge yourself to 3 days of coastal walking!

Warm wishes, Jane

CLASS SEVEN NEWSWe have been looking at the contribution of Gauss, Fibonacci, Pascal, Euclid, Thales and Pythagoras to Mathematics, particularly in the areas of Algebra and Geometry. We have seen that close observance of patterns in nature around them sparked many interesting thoughts and connections.

We have also been presenting our Cooking Projects to the class, using cue cards (memory joggers) only. We

At the other end of the school, the senior students are soon to benefit from the installation of some stationary fitness equipment, partly in and around their outdoor area. Many students at this age seem quite oriented around development of their fitness and agility and the equipment may take some pressure off other fixtures around the School! Kathryn is confident that parent help will be available to see both these projects come to fruition as soon as possible and such help would be deeply appreciated! Please see Kathryn if you can help bring these to life- it would be great to work together!

Love and Maintenance, Peter.

SPANISH NEWS¡Hola a todos!

We are back to our Winter Verses routine across the school. In the upper classes we have been exploring the cultural aspect of the big festival season in Spain in summer. Now they are running bulls in Pamplona (San Fermin) and every little village has their own ‘fiesta’ and fascinating way to celebrate it.

More complex grammatical structures are introduced now. We star to warm up for spring again with some flamenco songs and rhythms.

The lower classes love to hear storytelling and they are always willing to get more of them!

In the end of the term, we will start to cook traditional Spanish dishes on the fire, opening our heart to spring.

Thank you everyone!

iGracias a todos! Jose Rodriguez

MAINTENANCE NEWSThere was movement in the playground, for the word had passed around That Class 3 had come to work the climbing frame They were joined by generous helpers, who couldn’t help but help us As we moved to build them back their climbing game… (apologies to A.B.Patterson.!)

A new climbing frame is soon to come alive in the Junior Playground as key ingredients unfurl- some budget, enthusiastic design and input from Danilo and class 3, and a keen parent willing to co-ordinate volunteers to help with the building of it! I was lucky to be at the Class 3 presentation of their ideas and they are very keen and offered beautiful work! The photo shows Jemima during her presentation and I think these works will also be displayed in the Admin foyer for all to enjoy! Anyone interested or able to offer any help in bringing the climbing frame to life is most welcome; please catch up with Kathryn Hall who has generously offered to co-ordinate, thanks Kathryn!

CRAFT NEWSLast week I proudly watched and listened to the Year 7 and 8 Soiree. All the young people performed beautifully. I felt so lucky that I am able to spend time with these people on a weekly basis. Congratulations!

On Monday, during assembly, I am hoping to display craft completed by Year 7 and 8. Could you please help with this by reminding your young person to return their projects this week? They know what to bring.

All classes are happily working on amazing projects. My job is wonderful!

Happy crafting, Chris

SCHOOL NEWS:Host Families NeededDear School Community,

We have one month to find host accommodation for our new German Volunteer who arrives at the beginning of September. This time we will be hosting a young woman: Sophia Joens.

Sophia, a graduate of Waldorf schools has packed a lot of travel and experiences into her 22 years, including work with disadvantaged children in Brazil, nursing and disability care, biodynamic agriculture, and work as a boat builder in France. She is also an accomplished cellist and pianist.

Sophia comes to us via the program of “Friends of Rudolf Steiner Education” and has a strong interest in children and social activities. Please consider if you can welcome Sophia into your family home. Stays are expected to be around a month. Reimbursement for costs of hosting is available. Please contact John Goble via the school office to learn more about the hosting program and Sophia. Your support is most appreciated.

Spring Fair Coordinator 2014As the frosts of winter become less frequent and the first of the Daffodils start to bloom, spring is very much on the way, as is the annual school Spring Fair!

The Spring Fair is the largest school-community event on the school calendar and is a tradition much loved by both the school and the wider Castlemaine community.

The Spring Fair is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the beauty and creativity that is intrinsic to a Steiner Education.

Expressions of Interest are now being sought for the 2014 Spring Fair Coordinator. The successful applicant/s will need to be committed and energetic with excellent organisational and communication skills. Having previously attended our School Fair or possessing a solid understanding of Steiner principles is essential.

EURYTHMY NEWSKinder and Prep continue their eurythmic ‘song and dance’ with joy, farm tales, and full hearted healthy movement.

The ‘Curve of Cassini’ (pictured, blackboard drawing and in nature) is being learnt by all the younger classes, and is a picture of the process of differentiation and ‘individuation’. It is a process seen in nature and in our human development.

Class 5 are entering the ‘Egyptian’ movements, reaching out into the lines of infinity and into eternity, and learning to move clear geometrical forms.

Class 6 started work this week with a Banjo Patterson poem, stepping to the Iambic rhythm with grace and precision. They also continue their work on precise

geometrical forms, understanding how each one of them plays an essential part in the movement together.

Class 7 is now divided into two groups, working on different challenging pieces calling forth presence, precision, group work, and dare I say a bit of chivalry and theatrical nonsense! The extra space to move, by having fewer people in the room, was filled by the best in everyone.

Class 8 is undertaking some more challenging (highly focused, discipline), performance-orientated exercises, continuing on with soul gestures, weaving and geometrical forms. We’re also entering into poetic metres to support their Shakespeare production - “If music be the food of love, play on!”

Here here, play on!

Children’s TentDear Families,

The little treasures found inside the tent are made with natural materials, and many of those materials come straight from the landscape around us. Things like gumnuts, seed pods, feathers, fleece, sea shells and walnut shells, strong bark, acorn caps and cedar roses are of great use. You may know of other interesting earthly treasures. We would also be very grateful for any collections of empty match boxes. If you know of a good place to collect any of these items, or are able to collect any you’d be happy to donate, we would love to hear from you. Also please feel most welcome to contact us with any ideas or queries, or if you feel inclined to craft away the cold winter evenings, making things for the Children’s Tent. With love, Kate and Kate 0412 576 416

Early Childhood Talk for Playgroup, Kindergarten and Prep ParentsHelle is giving a talk at our school on Thursday 28th August from 7-8.30pm. The talk is open to all interested parents and staff. RSVP to the office please.

Helle is the founding director of Nøkken, a pioneering kindergarten in Denmark emphasizing time spent in nature, natural rhythms, biodynamic foods, and shaping life around the unique needs of the young child. She is the author of 3 books: “Nøkken,” “More News from Nøkken,” and “Childhood’s Garden,” a narrative with accompanying DVD; and has travelled and taught throughout the Americas, Canada and Europe. Helle is a member of the Danish Steiner Waldorf Kindergarten Association and serves on the board of The International Early Childhood Association.

“For the last few years I have travelled the world visiting kindergartens, childcare workers, nurseries and schools. Everywhere I have met a growing need to council parents about how to handle everyday life with small children. It takes guts for parents in this day and age to go against the stream and follow their intuition… knowing that children need to be given the space to develop naturally and in their own speed and way.” -

Helle Heckman
