NEWSLETTER FRIDAY 19TH MAY 2017 Dear Families, Carers and Students Jesus said to his disciples in today’s Gospel: "This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. Jesus does not expect that we will lay down our lives for someone but he does ask that in the light of his word we will produce fruit that will be enduring. Today Jane from St Vincent de Paul accepted the hundreds of giTs from our families for the work of Fred’s Van. Isn’t this what Jesus would want us to do? To care for those most in need? I said to the children at Assembly today that when on Kiss’n’Drop Duty each morning and night I see the love and care bestowed on our children by their families. I meet parents, grandparents and caregivers every day meWculously going about their duWes in geXng the children to school safely, well dressed, well provided for – and mostly on Wme. NEWSLETTERFRIDAY19TH MAY2017

Last Sunday, Mother’s Day, Pope Francis invited the faithful in St. Peter's Square to join him in silent prayer for each one's own mother, including those in Heaven.

He said: "So let's remember with gratitude and affection all mothers, even our mothers in heaven."

“To be a mother is a great treasure.” He explained that through their sacrifices, mothers assist in helping society to overcome its self-centred tendencies, as well as its lack of openness, generosity and concern for others.

“Mothers”, he said, “are often taken advantage of because of their availability. Not even the Christian community values them properly, despite the eminent example of the Mother of Jesus.”

“All of us give credit to our mothers for life and many other things, but not always are they listened to or helped in everyday life. In this sense motherhood is more than childbearing; it is a life choice entailing sacrifice, respect for life, and commitment to passing on those human and religious values which are essential for a healthy society,” he said.

This maternal martyrdom, the pontiff noted, consists of a mother’s ability to offer herself in silence, prayer and total surrender, “without any fanfare,” to her motherly duties.

A mother’s sensitivity “to all that threatens human life and welfare is a source of enrichment for society and the Church,” he said, “observing how it is common in moments of difficulty to encounter the tenderness, dedication and moral strength of our mothers.”

“It is they, mothers, who often give the first roots of the faith, the ones that permeate deepest; without them not only would the faithful be lost, but also a good part of the deepest fire of our faith.”

He concluded by “asking those present to join him in thanking all mothers for what they are and for all that they give to the Church and to our world.”

Dear parishioners,

Celebrating our Vinnies

On the wall of the parish office there is a formal document in parallel columns of English and French, dated 16 January 1962. It is the Letter of Aggregation of the local Salisbury Conference of the Society of St Vincent de Paul to the Society. The Letter of Aggregation was signed by the President-General of the Society, and one of the Vice-Presidents General, and records that at a meeting of the General Council in Paris on 8 January, our local Conference was recognised as a part of this vibrant organisation. Our Conference is part of a world-wide organisation, centred in Paris, and founded by Blessed Frederic Ozanam (Antoine-Frédéric Ozanam), when he was a university student. Ozanam named the society for the patron of charitable works, St Vincent de Paul. We may be a long way from Paris, but the same spirit of love and service is as local as it is global. For more than fifty-five years, our local Conference has helped local people in need. A Conference can serve well if we have two valued types of people: one is able and committed leaders, and the other type is generous members. All are volunteers. I would like to express the gratitude of all parishioners to our current leaders and members. Their work of service is demanding, so please support them by your prayers as well as by your charity. If you are new to the parish, or if a change in your life gives you a chance to serve, please consider whether you might volunteer for our Conference. Of course, the Society of St Vincent de Paul has many other works. One of these, Fred’s Van, is a familiar sight in our street, bringing hot meals to those in need. Another is the shop: this has been closed for some time, but a new shop is being prepared at the eastern end of John Street. May God bless these works, and all the other works of the Society!

Fr Roderick [18 May 2017]

***** SAFETY ***** PEDESTRIAN CROSSING: Can you please ensure that you cross the road using the pedestrian crossing. We have seen some students and parents running across the road in-between traffic. This is extremely dangerous when there are cars driving in all directions and visibility is poor. Please set the right example and use the pedestrian crossing which is supervised by staff. CAR PARK: Our car parks are set up with one way in and one way out. Please enter the carpark via the entrance near the roundabout. DO NOT do a right hand turn from Shepherdson Road into the carpark (as shown on the map). This blocks the traffic and creates congestion, frustration and danger. It is easier and quicker to drive down to the roundabout, go around and then enter the car park using the slip lane. DROP OFF ZONE: When entering the car park to use the drop off zone please make sure you use both sides of the car park (as shown by the yellow lines). This will keep the traffic off the road and a l l ev i a te conges t i on on Shepherdson and Martins Roads. If you are in the front side of the car park please allow cars from the far side to merge into your lane for the Drop Off Zone. Let’s work together as a Community and help keep everyone safe.

MEDICATION It is school policy for all medication to be kept in the sick room (located near student reception). A medication plan signed by your doctor should also be provided for any medication required by a student throughout the day whether long term or short term. This includes but not limited to panadol, nurofen and antibiotics. This policy is enforced to ensure your child takes the correct dosage at the correct time which is logged by our staff and to prevent other students from taking medication which could be harmful. A medication plan is also required for any child that may be incontinent. Your assistance and understanding on this matter is greatly appreciated.
