The Redford Township District Library (Redford, MI) believes in connecting our customers with the books they love,

information they need and the world they live in. RTDL is currently welcoming applications for a part-time Adult

Librarian Associate. We are looking for someone to join our team who can help us serve the community through their

helpful spirit, creativity, and passion for connecting people to the transforming power of knowledge.

Job Title: Adult Librarian Associate (Part-time)

Status: Non-exempt

Starting Wage: $13.00

Hours: 16 hours per week

Supervisor: Head of Adult Services

Posting Date: November 1st, 2017

Job Summary

The primary responsibility of this position is to assist with delivery of reference, technology help, and reader’s advisory

services to patrons of all ages.

Examples of Work

• Assist with reader’s advisory in person and over the phone to patrons of all ages.

• Assist patrons with computers, Wi-Fi, photocopiers, and other equipment.

• Assist with collection development duties, including processing materials.

• Carry out goals that align with RTDL’s strategic plan.

• Create positive customer experience.

• Participates in RTDL staff functions and training.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year accredited college or university.

• Ability to plan and deliver programs, including computer classes.

• Proficiency in the use of computers for library work; including the ability to access and utilize Internet resources

and office software applications.

• Preferred: public library experience, familiarity with databases, and previous use of SirsiDynix Symphony.

Other Requirements:

This position requires:

• The ability to analyze and resolve problems, organize tasks, set priorities, achieve goals, maintain records, and

facilitate positive relationships with staff and patrons.

• The ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with a diverse population, both within and outside

of the library.

• The ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time in the performance of the duties associated with this

position. Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance is also required. The ability to access,

input, and retrieve information from a computer is essential to this position.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the management of the Circulation Services Department Head, the Circulation Assistant provides

direct and indirect service to library patrons at the public service desks; procures and processes items,

articles and records from other libraries for the use of Canton residents; and is responsible for accurate

and efficient check-in, reshelving, and retrieval of library materials. Due to the varied responsibilities, this

position is differentiated by grade, based on job functions. Grades are described as Circulation Assistant I

and Circulation Assistant II. The nature of the work requires evening and weekend hours. This position

is classified as a regular part-time position and is non-exempt from overtime.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CIRCULATION ASSISTANT I

Respond to gate alarm when it sounds, following established procedures.

Greet patrons and answer directional questions.

Assist patrons in the use of printer/copier/scanners, low-vision magnifying devices, self-check stations and other equipment following established procedures.

Issue correct borrower’s card or renew existing cards after determining eligibility and following established policies and procedures.

Explain to patrons the purchase and use of copy cards, and assist in their use.

Accurately and efficiently checkout materials to patrons following established procedures.

Collect and handle money, checks, and credit card transactions for payment of fines, fees, and other charges in accordance with library policies and guidelines.

Accurately and efficiently check in returned materials, following established procedures to ensure completeness and good condition of the items. Handle and resolve exceptions according to established practices and procedures.

Respond to patron questions regarding their library account, following established policies and procedures to select an appropriate solution and communicating options to the patron to resolve the situation.

Pack/unpack items for delivery following established procedures.

Place items in correct location on hold shelves, appropriate carts, or other appropriate area, following established procedures.

Support Business Service Office or Security with Community Room usage.

Assist in other areas of Circulation Services performing duties of Circulation Assistants and Pages in all grades as needed.

Refer patron queries and issues beyond the scope of authority to the Circulation Services Department Head, or Director.

Stay informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contribute content as appropriate.

Knowledge of library policies and the ability to enforce them using a polite and professional approach.

Accept special assignments or duties in support of the library’s goals and objectives.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Good understanding and application of accepted public library practices.

High level verbal and written communication skills.

Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library’s values.

Efficient and accurate keyboarding.

Punctuality and dependability.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and common office equipment.

Ability to coordinate own work with the work of others.

Ability to operate cash register and credit card equipment.

Ability to work with patrons of varied backgrounds, ages, and abilities.

Delivery of tactful and decisive explanations to an audience not always receptive to the information being communicated.

Ability to multi-task e.g. answer telephone while assisting patrons in person.

Maintain neat and orderly library appearance throughout each shift.

Ability to effectively exercise initiative and independent judgment, and assume responsibility without close supervision.

Knowledge of library operations and services, including an understanding of and adherence to the privacy rights of patrons.

Ability to maintain discretion in handling confidential library matters.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional general education, typically an associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Prior experience in a public library or comparable customer service experience.

Familiarity with Innovative Interfaces Inc.’s Millennium automation system.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Sufficient physical agility to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, sit, lift up to 40 lbs., and push carts weighing up to 200 lbs.

Manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to grab, hold, and shelve materials and read small print on labels.

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee to communicate in writing and verbally.

Sufficient vision which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hard copy form.

Election of Officers and Meeting Dates/Times for 2017-2018 Smith volunteered to continue taking ½ Secretary duties, Rutkowski volunteered for ½ Secretary duties, McCann volunteered to stay on as Chair. There were no other nominations. Motion to appoint Smith as ½ Secretary, Rutkowski as ½ Secretary, and McCann as Chair made by Rutkowski, seconded by Morris. Motion Approved (Yes 7, No 0, Absent 2). It was agreed to keep meeting the 1st Thursday of the month at 1:30 at LVCC and the dates were booked through

December, 2018.

McCann called for additions to the agenda. Motion to approve with additions by Rosen, seconded by Smith.

Budget:

The Shared Technology Services budget for 10/16 thru 8/17 was presented. Payroll/Personnel Services and

Equipment Purchases are high due to a part-time job posting and a new laptop for the new employee.

TLN Board Meeting:

The TLN Board approved the budget. The three board members whose terms are expiring are coming back to

serve another term.

Technology Services Update:

The telecomm RFP is out and bids were due 9/14. The Telecomm Committee reviewed the bids and narrowed

it down to three finalists. Meeting with vendors 10/10 about proposals and pricing.

A quote for $16,300 for export from Sirsi for the migration to TLC/CARL.

Rutkowski motioned to approve the $16,300 Export by Sirsi seconded by Rosen. The Export fee was approved

Rosen wanted to commend Angie Michelini for great tech forum that was held September 29.
