A Note From The Pastor
When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Without warning there was a sound like a strong wind, gale force—no one could tell where it came from. It filled the whole building. Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them. Acts 2:1-4; The Message
On May 24 we celebrate Pentecost in the church. It is one of the principal days of the Christian year, celebrated on the fiftieth day after Easter. The Greek word pentecoste means "fiftieth day." Pentecost is the day on which the Christian church commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and oth-ers assembled in Jerusalem. It marks the beginning of the Christian church and the proclamation of its message throughout the world and is often referred to as the birthday of the church. The liturgical color for Pentecost is red. Traditionally, Pentecost has been a day for baptisms. Because it was the custom in the early church for persons being baptized to wear white robes or clothing, the day also became known as Whitsunday, a contraction of white Sunday. We have been talking about the nature of the church and our role as disciples; as we celebrate Pentecost, we remember how we are of one mind, one family, proclaiming to our community the good news of Jesus Christ. There is lots of good stuff coming in May, Confirmation, Mother’s Day, a cele-bration of our High School graduates, and Annual Conference, where Trent will be commissioned as a Provisional Elder. See you in church!
Peace,
A Note From The Associate Pastor
Wesley’s understanding of grace is such a beautiful and holistic picture. We have prevenient grace, which enables us be-fore we make any decision or movement toward God. We have justifying grace, which is granted to us as we respond, re-pent (literally: turn around), and gain new life. It is the grace of reconciliation, restoration, and redemption. And finally, we have sanctifying grace, which empowers our growth, as the image of God created within us begins to shine through. Wes-ley’s formulation emphasizes that salvation is a more complex action than just a one-time encounter. We don’t just meet God once then go about our business. God is active in every part of our preparation, transformation, and growth as Chris-tian people.
Recently though, I have begun to see this pattern in more than just our spiritual lives. God invites us to participate in these three forms of grace through our mission work, as well. If we think about missions, there are three main types of work that we do. Some work, like food pantries, homeless shelters, and childcare enable people to get through the day. These are ways to care for people, regardless of their decision to change. Through programs like these people are put into a position where change can occur. Second, there are ways in which we aid in transformation. GED programs, resume writing and financial management classes, even providing dress clothing are all examples. Then finally, there are ways in missions that we can help to promote growth in people’s lives. This could be through transitional or low-rent housing, community organiz-ing, or even short-term employment and training opportunities.
As baptized Christians, we are all called to God’s mission in the world. Though each of our callings are made manifest in different ways, we are part of a larger and far more complex work of God here in the world. I encourage you that as you go about your day, begin to look for those ways that God’s grace is present in every situation. Let us pray that God would grant us eyes to see.
Blessings,
