From all the staff and all the students who came to watch the Staff Panto on the last day of Christmas term, we want to thank you for coming to watch. Your contributions to your house charities were greatly appreciated and we hoped you enjoyed the show. You were a brilliant audience and it was fantastic to see so many of you in the audience. Due to its over-whelming popularity, we hope to return for a second performance, next Christmas.

FiNaNciaL assistaNce

There are a number of ways that you can access some financial support for your sons and daughters. If you are not currently receiving a support towards free school meals

but have done so in the past please let us know as there is now new funding from the government towards this.

Similarly we do have our own college fund which has been set up to help students have access to activities that might otherwise be too expensive. Parents who live in Spire Homes may also be interested to know that there is funding available for a variety of things such as trips, uniform and music tuition.

If you would like any more information please contact Student Services for a confidential chat. They would be only too happy to help.

UrgeNt remiNDer

If your child has been issued with crutches by the Hospital or Doctor, a parent/guardian should contact the college before the student returns to college. The college requires a completed ‘Return to School Assessment and PEEP’ form to be completed prior to the return of the student.

i amara LatiNa

Did you know that we offer Latin as an enrichment activity on Mondays from 3.00pm - 4.00pm?

Latin is a interesting language and is really useful for anyone considering an academic career path. Even if that is not the case, learning about the culture and history is fascinating. The lessons are open to students of all year groups and parents are welcome to join as well!

For more information please contact Mr Duffin at [email protected] or come along for a taster session. Have a look at this website for more reasons as to why Latin is cool: www.livelylatin.com

Lost propertY

Please take all belongings home at the end of the week or leave items in lockers. Items left in the cloakrooms and other areas of the college are collected on Fridays after school. Lost property will be available at the college shop the following week for students who have misplaced items.

HUmaNities DepartmeNtby Miss ballance

In recent weeks Year Eight and Year Nine have been studying the English Civil War and World War One respectively. Before Christmas these students were set a homework task of creating a timeline on these important periods of History.

The idea behind the timeline was to enable students to do their own research and use their imaginations to create a timeline of their choice. There were certain dates they had to include but the presentation of the task and number of dates was left open. It was incredibly pleasing to see the fantastic work that many students created.

The Humanities Department are keen to highlight some of the most creative examples of this work; celebrating the students’ hard work, effort and thought. They truly represent

what is meant by outstanding homework and show the very high quality and thoughtful work produced by these students.

Daniel Bennett (9PM) won Gold in the under 66Kg Pre-Cadet category at the British Judo Championships in Sheffield on the 12th-13th January. Daniel had some tough fights and had to wait until the end of the day for the final. The final was preceded by a procession of all the day’s finalists but the wait was worth it! The final was nail-biting.

This competition win counts as double points for the ranking positions this year, which is a great start.

Year 8 aND 9get creative!

On Wednesday 27th February, 32 students from years 8 and 9 English will have the opportunity to spend the morning with a local successful ‘Young Adult’ fiction writer. The author ‘Georgia Twynham’, has written a successful range of books which can be viewed on her website;

www.thethirteenth.co.uk

Ms Twynham will spend the session working on creative writing techniques with the students, in preparation for a series of writing sessions they will have during the Spring term. These sessions will culminate in the production of students’ own short stories, which will be showcased in the college library.

A Key Stage 3 competition will also take place with the student authors reading their work aloud to their peers.

Best of luck to our young aspiring authors!

“a 2.5 year expedition to cycle, row and kayak a loop of the planet.”

Sarah Outen, MBE, took time out from her busy schedule to visit the college, where she gave an inspirational account of the first leg of her round the world adventure to students from all year groups.

Still only 27 years old, Sarah demonstrated what could be achieved through ambition and determination, and is a superb role model for the students.

Keep a track of the next stage of her journey on her website.

Five students from UCC were selected to play for the Rutland U16’s Handball team. Morgan Severn and Tom McFarlane (Year 8) and Tom Beach, Oakley Wilkins and Jacob Lockyer (Year 9) played in the East Midlands Regional Competition against Lincolnshire. The match was a tight contest finishing14v14

at full time. Extra time still couldn’t split the teams finishing 16v16. In the end, Rutland just missed out, losing in a penalty shootout.

The Rutland squad is made up of Catmose and UCC students, pictured above.

UCC has National U13/U15 Schools Cup Competitions coming up in April. If anyone is interested in playing in these teams, please contact Mr Lewin.

cricket visits

Tom Leonard, our Country Cricket Development Coach, has been visiting the college to run coaching sessions and assembly visits every Friday. The first indoor competition took place with the U15

In January, 45 students had the opportunity to attend British Basketball’s version of the FA Cup – the BBL Cup final. The aim of the day was to provide an opportunity for students to experience a live Basketball game at professional level and to encourage participation in Basketball. The game was between Leicester Riders and Newcastle Eagles. The game was eventually won by the Leicester Riders. Throughout the day, those

attending were also able to watch England vs Ireland, the BBL Slam Dunk Contest and were even treated to some high flying acrobatic Basketball Dunks during half time by the ‘Crazy Dunkers.’

Seeing as everyone on the trip had such a good time, there may be another similar day out in the future. If you didn’t get to go this time, make sure you try to go on the next one!

Former GB Badminton International and Olympian, Anthony Clark, visited the college for his second visit in January as part of the Sky Sports Living for Sport Programme. Anthony delivered an assembly presentation to over 200 students talking about his career, his training, and the values of sport. Anthony then spent two hours coaching the college’s Badminton squads, pictured above.

Both visits have been really well received by students and staff alike and the college has signed up to continue the project next year. UpcomiNg coLLege eveNts

The UCC U13’s won their Quarter Final County Cup match against Woodbrooke 37 v 20. The U13 Rugby Team faced horrendous conditions to take their place in the Semi-Final of the County Cup where they will play Mount Grace away. The boys fought hard, winning the ball during the breakdown and scoring tries on the break. Aaron Hart and Morgan Severn scored three tries each, playing with controlled power and aggression. All the boys can be extremely proud of their efforts and can look forward to the Semi-Final.

Thank you to Mr Fagence and Mr Steele for their coaching of the squad.
