Rio Oil & Gas 2012 grows and becomes more global
The event will have 4 plenary sessions and 27 panels
From the Industrial Trade Fair to Rio Oil & Gas, event makes history in 30 years
The 16th edition of the Rio Oil & Gas is a celebration of its 30th anniversary in 2012 as a global benchmark in the debate and exhibition of the oil and natural gas sec-tor. The event, which is held in Rio de Ja-neiro on September 17-20, will be larger – in addition to occupying the five pavillions in Riocentro, there will be adittional tents and a new theme block in the conference – Management and Scenarios of the In-dustry – in order to address the relevant topics for the sector more deeply. The ini-tiative will ensure that delegates expand the discussions on issues such as the new exploration frontiers, operational safety, local content, professional qualification, new technologies, responsibility associa-ted to environmental accidents and sus-tainable mobility.
The event, which is organized by the Brazi-lian Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Institute (IBP), once again will comprise an exhibi-tion and a conference, whose slogan this year is “Innovation and Growth with Res-ponsibility”. There will be 1.5 thousand exhibiting companies and institutions, which is superior to the 1.3 thousand exhi-bitors from the last edition in 2010. We
expect that the 38,000m² net area of the trade exhibition receives 55,000 visitors – 2,000 more than the event’s last edition.
Another novelty this year will be the Are-na+10, hosting a broad debate on social-environmental responsibility, in an area especially assembled for this purpose, on the exhibition area. The name given to the parallel event not only reminds us of the Rio+20, but also marks the tenth year sin-ce the establishment of a specific space to discuss the topic sustainability in the oil & gas industry, when Brazil hosted the 17th World Petroleum Congress (WPC) along with the Rio Oil & Gas.
The Business Roundtables, under coor-dination of the Brazilian Organization of the Oil & Gas Industry (Onip) and the Bra-zilian Support Agency to Micro & Small Companies (Sebrae), will promote op-portunities between oil companies and suppliers. In turn, labor qualification will be the main topic of the program Pro-fissional do Futuro (Professional of the Future), an initiative of the IBP supported by its Youth Committee, and oriented to young college students.
The 2012 Rio Oil & Gas Conference will
comprise four plenary sessions and
six theme blocks totaling 27 panels,
held from 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm, on the
segments of Exploration & Production;
Supply & Petrochemicals; Natural Gas;
Biofuels; Environment and Operational
Safety; Legal and Economic Perspec-
tives; and Management and Scenarios
of the Industry. An exclusive discussion
will be promoted on this last theme blo-
ck, on different corporate issues.
The intent with this set of talks is to incre-
ase the delegates knowledge on operatio-
nal practices and technologies, in addition
to stimulate the reflection on the future
of the energy sector and help the quali-
fication of the national industry. “The Rio
Oil & Gas was designed as an event for
the integration of the Brazilian oil chain
and it has been becoming stronger year
after year, with this feature. It is ackno-
wledged by the companies as an interna-
tional benchmark congress for technical
and technological discussions”, point out
Carlos Eugênio Ressurreição, coordinator
of the event’s Technical Committee.
All plenary sessions will have the par-
ticipation of at least one foreign spe-
aker, thus reinforcing the internatio-
nal profile of the event. The first day
will feature presentations by CEOs
from five large operators; on the se-
cond, another plenary will address
the operational safety issue; the third
plenary session will be on energy and
will have speakers regarded as glo-
bal icons in this area; the last plenary
session will feature a presentation by
Petrobras’ executives.
In 2012, similarly to the previous edi-
tions, there will also be technical ses-
sions in the morning, when the 628
papers selected by the event´s Tech-
nical Committee will be presented. In
addition to the face-to-face sessions,
this time there will be digital poster
sessions, where the papers will be
presented in video format. With this
format, it is expected that the largest
number of interested people are gran-
ted access to information, at the same
time as the researchers bear more
chances to show their works.
The Rio Oil & Gas completes 30 ye-
ars in 2012. Three decades following
and contributing for the development
of the Brazilian oil & natural gas sec-
tor, as well as its inclusion in the glo-
bal scenario. This history of success
began in 1982, while the country was
under military government and the
state-owned monopoly of the oil &
gas sector. From that time on, we un-
derwent a redemocratization process,
we discovered giant hydrocarbon re-
serves offshore, our local industry
grew stronger, the market opened,
the pre-salt was discovered and there
has been increased investment in re-
newable energy sources, among many
other transformations.
Similarly, the exhibition and the con-
ference that comprise the event also
progressed in this interval, adding pro-
fessionalism to the organization and
generating more and more results for
the participants. Back to its origin, still
in the 1980s, while it occupied only pa-
villions three and five at Riocentro, the
event was named “Industrial Oil & Gas
Trade Fair”, and that was the name un-
til 1992. It was established with a view
to bringing the local suppliers of ma-
chinery and equipment together, who
would be interested in exhibiting to the
then only operator acting in the do-
mestic market, Petrobras. The event
took place every other year, following
the petroleum and petrochemicals
congresses, which interpolated each
other at each edition.
The Rio Oil & Gas comprised the entire
supply chain, from the hydrocarbon ex-
ploration segment to retailing fuel. Ho-
wever, the major turning point in its de-
sign took place in 2002, when it hosted
the World Petroleum Congress (WPC),
the largest global conference on the
sector, which occurs every three years
in a oil producing country. “It was a great
victory to Brazil and a professionaliza-
tion milestone for the event”, remem-
bers Ana Guedes, IBP’s Events Manager.
In a context of competitive environ-
ment among the operators in 2002,
the Rio Oil & Gas had the presence of
the major oil companies in the world
and an international pavillion received
delegations from several countries.
One decade after, the expectation this
year is to reach an even greater stan-
dard of professionalism and results.
Since the last edition, a conduct ma-
nual has guided the exhibitors. The vi-
siting audience has also gained focus
as a professional acting in the industry.
These are some out of a series of ac-
tions being taken by the organization
to ensure continued evolution and its
permanence among the main interna-
tional oil & gas shows. Today, the Rio
Oil & Gas is regarded as one of the gre-
atest global events of the sector, and
the greatest one in Latin America.
The first poster, on the left, of
the event, under the name of “I
Industrial Oil & Gas Trade Fair”,
stimulated the suppliers to take
the opportunity to promote their
products with Petrobras in a fi-
ve-day trade fair, October 3-7,
1982. The marketing material
called the attention to the Cr$
121 million(note: former brazilian
currency)hired by the oil com-
pany in the previous year and the
chance machinery and materials
producers to be included in the
vendors’ list for the company.

Conference, exhibition and parallel events indicate the future of the energy sector
During the conference challenges posed to the oil industry will be debated, and the novelties of the sector will be introduced
Event designed to bring suppliers together has gained international recognition
