2013 KEEP DUNEDIN
BEAUTIFUL AWARDS
At the Keep Dunedin Beautiful
Awards Ceremony last Monday our
East Taieri Enviro Action Group led
by Mrs Lisa Morrison, our
Enviroschools Lead Teacher, was
awarded the Taylor Community
Pride Shield for its work on waste-
minimisation at East Taieri School.
This group meets weekly and
consists of 16 year 4-6 children who
enthusiastically oversee our school's
waste minimization through liaising
with classes. Each class has a
compost bin, a reusable paper
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
tray, as well as paper recycling bins through the Paper4trees programme. Last year the school
received 10 kowhai trees as part of the scheme which the children planted in our grounds. The
compost is used in our edible gardens which many of the children also work in. Further, the
group encourages the minimization of energy consumption through the daily notices and
laminated signage in all classrooms including closing doors, or turning lights and heaters/air
conditioning off when out of the room or not needed.
The rubbish bins have been removed from the grounds and everyone is encouraged to take as
much of their lunch rubbish home to be recycled or reused. During 2013 it is planned to
continue this waste minimization and to build upon it by educating about sustainable lunch
wrappings and " nude food" options.
Finally, this group also regularly weeds around the school and cleans up Cemetery Road and
the DCC dog park of litter three-four times a year. They are also on a roster within the
Mosgiel community to water the plants in the boxes along Gordon Road.
Congratulations on receiving this award.

effort was shown by our Year 4-6 swimmers at

EXPERIENCE ANOTHER CULTURE IN 2013 AND IMPROVE YOUR LANGUAGE STUDIES AT HOME
In June-July students from over 20 countries around the world will be arriving in New Zealand to study
at local high schools for 2- months.
Opportunities exist for families to act as a host family, in a volunteer capacity. Hosting can be on a temporary, short or long term basis. Host families help provide international students with the chance to study and experience life in New Zealand. This is a great way to learn about another country and culture, establish a lifelong link to a family in another country and contribute to international goodwill.
If your family can offer a friendly, supportive and caring home environment, contact us today.
