From the DSA—DSA Health Alert Report 2019 -
Healthcare for people with Down's syndrome
We are very concerned that, despite our ongoing health
campaigning which started in the 1990s, there have
been a number of recent high profile cases of
preventable deaths of people with Down’s syndrome.
Please ask your MP/local candidates what they will do
to address the issues raised in the report

syndrome.org.uk/about/campaigns/health-

Upcoming Relaxed Performances at The Lowry
Relaxed Performances are open to all but could be particularly appropriate for anyone who may find the usual thea-
tre environment challenging, be that due to an Autism Spectrum Condition, a learning disability, or a fear of the
dark, loud noises or confined spaces.
The lights are left on at a low level during the performance, you'll be free to come and go from your seat as you
need to, sound and lighting effects are softened, and there will be a quiet space available outside the auditorium for
anyone who needs a break.
The Gruffalo's Child Relaxed performance: Thu 19 December, 1.30pm.
Follow the Gruffalo’s Child on her adventurous mission in an enchanting adaptation of the book by Julia Donaldson
and Axel Scheffler.
One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s child tiptoes out into the deep dark wood. She follows snowy tracks and
encounters mysterious creatures – but the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist… does he? Tickets £10
A Monster Calls Relaxed performance: Thu 27 February, 2pm
Thirteen-year-old Conor and his mum have managed just fine since his dad moved away. But now his mum is sick
and not getting any better. His grandmother won’t stop interfering and the kids at school won’t look him in the eye.
Then, one night, Conor is woken by something at his window. A monster has come walking. It’s come to tell Conor
tales from when it walked before. And when it’s finished, Conor must tell his own story and face his deepest fears.
From the critically acclaimed bestseller, A Monster Calls offers a dazzling insight into love, life and healing.
Recommended for ages 10+ Tickets £15
Room on the Broom Relaxed performance: Wed 8 April, 2pm
Jump on board the broom with the witch and her cat in Tall Stories’ fun-filled adaptation of Room on the Broom,
the best-selling picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
The witch and her cat are travelling on their broomstick when they pick up some hitch-hikers – a friendly dog, a
beautiful green bird and a frantic frog. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK – it snaps in two… just
as the hungry dragon appears!
Will there ever be room on the broom for everyone? Find out in the magical Olivier Award nominated show for eve-
ryone aged 3 and up. Tickets £15 https://thelowry.com/visit-us/access/

Education Committee Inquiry on SEND
The Education Committee has published the report of its inquiry into special educational needs and
disabilities (SEND). They have concluded that this generation is being let down by the current system, and
that parents are facing a “titanic struggle” to find the right help and support.
The DSA contributed to the Special Education Consortium’s submission, which was one of 700 written
pieces of evidence that helped form the 18-month inquiry.
