GRADE IX STUDENTS ENGAGE IN VIDEO COFERENCE WITH ISRAEL AND UKRAINE Grade IX students were engaged in a video conference on 4 December 2017 with Oleksandria School No. 9, Ukraine, Mahatma Montessori Matriculation Hr. Sec School Baba Building, India and Yachad Modiin High School, Israel. Dhairya Bhandari, Tanishq Jhakar, Anmol Das, Harmehar Kaur Narula, Paridhi Gupta, Neel Khullar, Vinayak Takkar and Ivana Gulati participated in the conference that was based on the theme, ‘Power of the Narrative’. Report from Sean Rose, Facilitator from Generfation Global, an initiative of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation. “Summary of the dialogue The VC began with students narrating some stories that are important or meaningful to them, and explaining what value or lessons they draw from them. Students did a good job sharing stories, with a variety of narrationstyles (including pair narration), and stories ranging from mythology to faith/belief to contemporary. They also did a great job at elaborating on some of the themes, lessons, or values that they draw from these and other stories. Their choice of stories to share demonstrated an understanding of different cultures, countries, beliefs, and experiences. Next, I invited students to share ideas around the power of stories and their importance in their communities, and they shared thoughtful, nuanced comments about the roles that stories play in shaping individuals and society. This led organically into a time for questions and responses, during which students demonstrated good active listening, were building on and adding to each other's points, were asking relevant questions, and were sharing thoughtful responses. I asked a question about whether and how best to respond to harmful or damaging narratives, and students again shared a broad range of interesting ideas. In their closing reflections, students commented on some of the specific themes and ideas they noticed in this dialogue, including the importance of media narratives, and of working together. One suggestion of a learning opportunity is for students to consider the role and importance of contested stories and narratives. At one point, in response to my question about responding to damaging or harmful narratives, a student commented that it is important to document stories in a historical, legal way. This is a really interesting idea. What do other students think about this? What might be the benefits, and the challenges of doing this? In particular, where a story is contested or challenged by another group, how might this method of documentation help or harm those communities? For example, there are situations around the world where a majority group and a minority group might have very different narratives, stories, or histories. How might this be best navigated? Evidence of good dialogue - Participation was forthcoming and dialogue was led by students' questions and comments. - Students gave well-developed answers, speaking personally and acknowledging nuance and complexity.
