The whole school took time out to attend Westport Idol 2015 recently. There were 14 individual and group performanc-es listed on the program. The capable master of ceremonies (MCs) Gabriel Herron and Jayden Smith kept the show rolling cracking jokes and moving things along.

Some very entertaining and impressive perfor-mances came from the Year 11 girls doing a Spice Girls song followed by Year 12 girls taking on some toe-tapping ABBA numbers. Jodie Hancock was great on keyboard while Saskia Smith and Mehau Blazley sang ‘Perfect’, Julia Chirchop gave a dance performance to their singing. Gabriel Herron’s monologue had everybody laughing as he launched himself headlong into the audience at one stage. Meleasha Clarke and Chloe O’Brien sang ‘Stand By You’ beautifully. The judges had a difficult time separating the best performances. Third place was awarded to the Year 12 girls performing ABBA. Second place, losing by only one point, was Lach-lan McGrath on the electric guitar.

Last week, Westport Campus competed in the Australian Futsal Association (AFA) North Coast Champions of Champions at the Port Macquarie Basketball Stadium. We had three teams who participated. These teams quali-fied for this tournament by finishing either first or second at the Hastings Tournament held last Term.

U/13 Boys The first game was against Great Lakes Tun-curry in which they easily won by several goals. Their second game was against Bishop Druitt College. This was a closer encounter with Westport Campus winning 2 – 0. In their third game they came up against SCAS who defeated them in the Hastings Final last term. The boys got off to a great start taking the lead early in the game however, SCAS proved too strong defeating our boys 6 – 1. The boys next played Bishop Druitt College in the Semi Final. They were a much improved side from the first game however, our boys managed to win a close encounter by 1 goal. This put us in the Final against SCAS. The boys put in a much better effort with the scores locked at 1 – 1 at full time. We then had four minutes of golden goal extra time. No score was made. The game then went to a shootout with Westport Campus winning 6 – 5. The boys were crowned North Coast Champions. Well done boys. Team: Travis Chandley-Pascoe, Bailey Spokes, Bailey Carfi, Joshua Schofield, William Beard, Edward Smith.

U/16 Girls The first game was against Port Macquarie Cam-pus. It was a real grudge match resulting in a draw with no goals scored. Their second game was against St Clairs losing 2 – 1. Their third game was against Taree High winning 3 – 1. The next game was against another Taree High team losing 6 – 3. They next played Bellingen High losing 3 – 1 and their last game was against Coffs Harbour in which they were defeated. Overall, the girls played well considering they lost several of their players who had to play up in the U/19s team. Well done girls. Team: Kate Clarke, Nonie Bishop, Chloe John-son/Sullivan, Mishayla Boughton, Montana Reynolds, Elise Goodwin. Subs: Jessica Hayes, Michaela Elford, Melissa Martin, Hannah Faux. U/19 Girls The first game was against Camden Haven High. It was a close encounter with our girls winning 2 – 0. Their second game was against St Clairs where they won 3 – 0. The third game was against a tough opponent Bellingen High who had several National players. The girls gave it their best but were defeated 5 – 2. The girls fin-ished the preliminary rounds in 2nd place. They then played Camden Haven High for a spot in the Final. Camden Haven put in an excellent effort holding our girls to a nil all draw.

They then went straight into a penalty shootout. Our girls came away victorious winning 5 – 4 thanks to a great save by Tayla Heck. In the Final, the girls came up against Bellingen High. After a pre-game discussion on tactics, our girls played a very different game holding Bellingen to a 1 – 1 draw at the end of normal time. The game then went in-to four minutes of golden goal overtime. Un-fortunately, with about 30 seconds to go Bellingen made a break sneaking a goal past Tayla. Congratulations girls. Finishing second in North Coast is a tremendous effort. Team: Tayla Heck, Georgia Clarke, Elissa McKinnon, Michaela Elford, Jessica Hayes, Hannah Faux, Melissa Martin The U/13 Boys and U/19 Girls have qualified for the next round to be held in Brisbane later this year.

WESTPORT is collecting the Earn & Learn stickers from Woolworths again this year. Could we ask stu-dents to remember when shop-ping to actually ASK the checkout people for the stickers - quite often they don't offer or ask. Stick-ers can be brought to the Science Faculty, or to the front office. Our goal is 8,000 stickers this year .

The Westport Campus girls volunteered their time

to help sell items to help raise funds for Legacy on

Thursday 3rd September.

Mr Peter Bruce, who is president of the Port Mac-

quarie Hastings Legacy, welcomed the girls and

thanked them for their valuable help.

A small group of students and their teacher from the Westport Campus of Hastings Second-ary College went along to Oxley Oval to the Rugby Union games on Saturday to hand over a cheque for $1,400. The teacher, Mr. Andrew Parkin, was accompa-nied by four students: Kira Olive President of WASCALS, Jennifer Cooper, Tiffany Bartlett and Bill Lewthwaite. The Westport group handed over a cheque for $1,400 to the President of the Hastings Valley Vikings Rugby Union Club, Mr. David Barnes, for the Xavier Dunn Foundation.

Mr. Simon Dunn, Xavier’s dad was also on hand to accept the generous donation for Xavier’s ongoing medical expenses. President Kira Olive addressed the crowd and spoke about the WASCALS fund -raising efforts which the community generously sup-ports every year. She then presented the cheque to Mr Simon Dunn who thanked her and the rest of the WASCAL volunteers. Westport has had a long association with the Vikings Rugby club with some of its teachers having played for the Vikings teams. Both Mr Barnes and Mr Dunn are former students of the school.

citizenship topic, has had an opportunity to cre-ate an individual puzzle piece that was then in-stalled as two large scale works and exhibited at the Hastings Valley Community of Schools Night of Excellence. In Week 5 four Year 10 Westport Campus students, Alanna Burns, Danielle Tem-pleman, Letitia Dodd and Nicola Smith, joined Miss McCloskey to assist 5/6H in creating their very own Google logo. It was a great experience for all involved and has received a lot of positive feedback. The girls told Miss McCloskey that they had a great time working with the Tacking Point students and hope that they can go back again next term!

Students in Year 4 and 5 have been enhancing their thespian talents through the enjoyment of weekly drama sessions. They have participated enthusiastically and exceeded all expectations by grasping ideas quickly and producing insightful group performances. Mrs Underwood also had the privilege of assisting year 6 students with dramatic techniques in preparation for Tournament of the Minds. The students have had the opportunity to show their creative and dramatic side through Improvisation and Play-making. This has included the use of emotion and gesture to represent central themes of citi-zenship and sustainability.

The enrichment sessions have been an in-valuable and inspirational experience for both students and teachers alike and we look forward to continuing to meet and work with our wonderful primary school students.
