12 March 2021 This week was marked by a momentous return to school aſter the second lockdown. I am very pleased to report that it has gone very well indeed on a number of different fronts. On Monday, the school was featured for the third me this year on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire radio, having been a focus for how schools in the city have coped during lockdown. This me, the interview focused on what we had done to enable our school to reopen. The host was fairly shocked to learn that we had converted the school hall into a lateral flow tesng centre and on Thursday and Friday last week, 900 students from across all year groups had been tested. That work has connued this week with thousands more tests taking place. I am delighted to say that our young people have behaved themselves impeccably and in a very mature manner in this process. Secondly, behaviour has been very good indeed and given that the school has not been operang in a normal manner for several weeks, the atmosphere has been calm and conducive to learning. Of course, a school is not only about studying subjects and achieving success in qualificaons. It is also about young people developing, maturing and acquiring those social skills that are so important for our personal lives and the world of work. Most of our students have been deprived of this during lockdown so we have encouraged them to talk to each other during breaks and lunchmes and re-establish those friendships once again. I also want to take this opportunity to praise our staff here at Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School. Over the last year we have been presented with some major challenges that in normal mes might have looked insurmountable. These have included keeping year groups separated throughout the school day and being taught in designated blocks. We have also established catering facilies in different areas of the school, once again to keep year groups segregated. The school day itself has been altered in terms of ming and entrance and exit points. Our young people have been largely exemplary in complying with all of this and our staff have overcome all those challenges with determinaon and cooperaon. We are all delighted to see our students once again and it was a real pleasure to welcome all of them back with a virtual whole school assembly. Last year, we experienced Lent in isolaon. With the vaccinaon programme happening so rapidly and with the gradual easing up of restricons, it means that we can observe the remainder of Lent once again back in school. This enables us to observe the three Lenten tradions starng with collecve worship, fasng (whether that means absnence from favourite foods or from acvies such as social media, for example) and finally alms giving by raising money for our chosen Lenten charity, being, Cafod. The promise of Easter and new life lies ahead and this year, with God s grace, will be very much one of renewal. God bless. 12 March 2021

This week was marked by a momentous return to school after the second lockdown. I am very pleased to report that it has

gone very well indeed on a number of different fronts.

On Monday, the school was featured for the third time this year on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire radio, having been a

focus for how schools in the city have coped during lockdown. This time, the interview focused on what we had done to

enable our school to reopen. The host was fairly shocked to learn that we had converted the school hall into a lateral flow

testing centre and on Thursday and Friday last week, 900 students from across all year groups had been tested. That work

has continued this week with thousands more tests taking place. I am delighted to say that our young people have behaved

themselves impeccably and in a very mature manner in this process. Secondly, behaviour has been very good indeed and

given that the school has not been operating in a normal manner for several weeks, the atmosphere has been calm and

conducive to learning.

Of course, a school is not only about studying subjects and achieving success in qualifications. It is also about young people

developing, maturing and acquiring those social skills that are so important for our personal lives and the world of work.

Most of our students have been deprived of this during lockdown so we have encouraged them to talk to each other during

breaks and lunchtimes and re-establish those friendships once again. I also want to take this opportunity to praise our staff

here at Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School.

Over the last year we have been presented with some major challenges that in normal times might have looked

insurmountable. These have included keeping year groups separated throughout the school day and being taught in

designated blocks. We have also established catering facilities in different areas of the school, once again to keep year

groups segregated. The school day itself has been altered in terms of timing and entrance and exit points. Our young people

have been largely exemplary in complying with all of this and our staff have overcome all those challenges with

determination and cooperation. We are all delighted to see our students once again and it was a real pleasure to welcome

all of them back with a virtual whole school assembly.

Last year, we experienced Lent in isolation. With the vaccination programme happening so rapidly and with the gradual

easing up of restrictions, it means that we can observe the remainder of Lent once again back in school. This enables us to

observe the three Lenten traditions starting with collective worship, fasting (whether that means abstinence from favourite

foods or from activities such as social media, for example) and finally alms giving by raising money for our chosen Lenten

charity, being, Cafod. The promise of Easter and new life lies ahead and this year, with God’s grace, will be very much one of

renewal.

God bless.

It was so nice to see all of our students back in school this week. The testing process went really smoothly and students didn’t make a fuss! Subject teachers have commented on how enthusiastic students have been in their lessons and are excited to be teaching students in person again.

SAFEGUARDING

Tips for Parents and Caregivers - preparing your child for returning to school Tips from The Mental Health Foundation

Start talking Your child might have worries about the virus, restrictions in place or their education and school. It’s important to

acknowledge that this is a difficult time. You can explore these worries and help them to think of ways to manage

them.

It’s important to give them the message that returning to school is a big thing and you understand that. Talk to them

in a way that is sensitive to their needs – you will know your child best. Don’t intrude or impose yourself on them, but

gently open the conversation and let them know you’re there for them if they want to talk.

Sleep routine Sleep is very important for your child’s mental health and wellbeing, as well as their development. Try and help your

child get a healthy night’s sleep, ready for being back at school.

Coping Strategies Coping strategies are what you use when feeling stressed, such as speaking with friends or family, doing regular

exercise, or using breathing techniques. If you feel comfortable, you could share your own worries and feelings about

the current situation and coping strategies you are using to manage these feelings.

Encourage them to focus on the present and avoid thinking too far ahead. Focus on what is in their control (hand

washing, wearing masks, getting prepared for returning such as packing their bag) rather than what they can’t control

(what might happen with the pandemic in several months time).

Make yourself available as much as possible Children may want to come and “debrief” but maybe not when you expect. Create space for talking in different ways,

such as going on a walk together or baking together – there may be less pressure in these circumstances than when

sitting face-to-face. Check in with them periodically. Don’t assume they’re ok because they seem it. Ask the young

person how things are going. Ask them questions like: What have they enjoyed about being back? Any worries or

challenges?

Look at the positives It might be helpful to talk with your child about the things they have enjoyed during the pandemic and what they may

be looking forward to, like their favourite shop reopening, seeing friends in the park or getting ice cream from their

favourite café.
